Does updating the iOS wipe iPad contents?

Hi,
First time posting here so hopefully in the right place!
I'm out of the country for a few months as of next week and as many are eagerly awaiting 4.3 on the iPad. My concern is if I update using an iTunes account that is not mine (on a friends or public computer) will it wipe the contents of my iPad? I travel light bringing my laptop isn't an option and I have photos and movies I wouldn't want to be without.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Ryan

Thank you for the responses.
I did a quick experiment. Connected my iPad to my wife's iTunes. It came up with the normal 'iPad can only be synced with one iTunes etc' message, I choose sync purchases with this this iTunes NOT 'Erase and sync'. Pressed cancel on a few more dialog boxes and then had my iPad in the devices section of her iTunes, unsync'd, with an option to update software so looks like it may be possible.
Before I leave I'm going to downgrade my ios and try and actually update that way, will post the results. If it all gets wiped a least I can re sync with my itunes before I leave home.
Good idea about the MobileMe, will have a look at that as well.

Sorry...  that is as far as an iPad 1 can go.

Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

You can't update the original iPad beyond iOS 5.1.1 so if you were already running that version, there was no reason to wipe the iPad to try to update.
Won't work at all, doesn't tell me the whole story. Does it power up but not respond to anything? Does it not power up at all? Some detailed information in context would really be helpful.
IF the device will not start up, try a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

  • How do I update my iOS? I have the iPad 1 and have tried over and over to try and update the iOS version to iOS 5.1, nothing works it will start updating then say that it did not update? PLEASE HELP!!!

How do I update my iOS? I have the iPad 1 and have tried over and over to try and update the iOS version to iOS 5.1, nothing works it will start updating then say that it did not update? PLEASE HELP!!! P.s I'm running newest version of iTunes.

Connect your iPad to your computer and let iTunes back up your iPad. After it does that disconnect it and go into your settings under general and under reset and select erase all content. After you do that reconnect to your computer, open iTunes and follow the screen options to set up your iPad as new. Once it is done doing that see if you have the latest version of iOS installed and if it does then either download gain the apps you had before or restore them from the backup made previous.

  • I have an Ipad 2 and never updated the Ios bfore now. When syncronizing it I lost everything I have bought on Itunes. How do I get it back?

I bought an Ipad 2 some years back and never hooked it up to my computer (somehow). I was now to update the Ios on it, but when doing that I lost all the music I bought in Itunes.
When trying to buy it back it states "you have already bought this item".. Is it any possibillity to get this music back? I've used quite a lot of money on all that music and it is no fuin having lost it.

  • HT5278 If I reset my iPad 1 to factory settings, how would I then update the iOS to 5.1.1

If I reset my iPad 1 to factory settings, how would I then update the iOS to 5.1.1?
As I believe the update would fail as it would be attempting to update to iOS 7 which is 'above its paygrade' or at least this is what an apple genius told me...
He said he thought I would need to find an old version of iTunes containing the correct version of iOS. But he was not very confident about what he was telling me.
Any help would be much appreciated...

    Hmmm
I may be asking the wrong question here, let's back up a little.
I have an iPad 1 running iOS 5.1.1
Over the years it has become a little laggy and sluggish. I am about to replace it and wish to 'recycle' this old one onto my granddaughter.
I want to completely wipe it, and get rid of all traces of the hundreds of app it's had on and deleted, in the hopes that it will clean up any residual crud that's choking it.
Is a factory reset what I'm looking for?
What I had in mind, is what I have done with my iPhone on a couple of occasions which was to completely start over with it and I was sure that that had taken the iOS version back to what it was when I took delivery of it. But I may be wrong...

  • Preparing an iPad in Configurator without updating the iOS

    Hi all,
I work on a research study that uses iPads and an app to collect data. The app is a third party app and will not work if the iOS on the iPads is updated beyond iOS 7.0.6. I was trying to apply a backup via Configurator to one of the study's iPads and I got the error message that Configurator couldn't recognize the supervision status of the iPad and that the iPad needed to update the iOS for Configurator to work. I did some research on the interent and it seemed like people who didn't want to update the iOS created a custom iOS in Configurator then prepared their iPads using the custom iOS. I unsupervised my iPad and dowloaded the ipsw I wanted and put it in the custom iOS folder in Configurator but it doesn't work. Everytime I hit the Prepare button I get the same error: Unable to install iOS 7.0.6, unable to restor device with firmware found at file:///Users/DailyDiaryStudy/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Li brary/Caches/com.apple.configurator/UnpackedFirmware/iPad2,3_7.0.6_11B651_Restor e.ipsw/.
Personalization failed, error codes 4027 and 3194.
I've done everything the Apple support website and other websites recommend but it still hasn't worked. I also can't find any file called Unpacked Firmware in the location Configurator gives in the error message. The iPad is already on iOS 7.0.6 and I don't know if that's the problem or the firmware is the problem or if it's something else. I tried preparing the iPad with 7.0.4 and the same thing happened. I only use Apple technology for work so I really don't know anything about it beyond what I've taught myself. I've done some internet searches but I haven't found anything helpful. One person got error code 4027 and did something in the Host file but I don't know what it was. I know updating the iOS would likely solve all my problems but like I said, doing so would mean I would no longer be able to use the study's app on that iPad. I'm using the latest version of Configurator and I'm running Mavericks on the Mac. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Another way to see this:
Apple offers half price apps.  Configurator is not mandatory, but half price apps are almost useless to a school without Configurator.
Using Configurator means schools are forced to always use the most bleeding edge iOS.
    ==============================================================
Imagine if Microsoft offered half price apps to schools, but only if the IT staff forced everyone to use windows 8. Oh my...
This affects many apps.  If you feel apple should not be so forceful and restricive please call and let them know you don't want configurator to force the new ios at the time of prep.   (866) 752-7753

I have an iPad that I want to update to IOS 5.1. I have several apps that each were installed using a different iTunes ID. How can I update the IOS without losing the apps?

To update your phone requires using the latest version of iTunes, on your computer, as well as Internet access. The update to iOS 5.0 or higher is an erase/restore deal, so you not only have to make sure all of the content, currently on your phone, is on your computer and accessible, you need to update iTunes first, have Internet access, then update your phone. There is no way around this fact. You could go to an Apple store or use another computer, but you run the risk of losing all of your data it you do that.

  • I want to update my ios in ipad 2, message tells me to back up or lose. I don't have icloud and I can't get it without the newer version of ios. How can I backup without icloud?

I want to update from ios 4.3 on my ipad 2. When I connect to itunes(newest version is installed) on pc, and attempt the update, I get a message to backup , or l will lose items purchased on the ipad. I don't have icloud yet, because when I try to add it to my ipad, I am told I need the newest version of ios. So it's a vicious cycle! I tried to buy itunes match, and I wasn't able to do that either! I have downloaded books, and songs on ipod that aren't able to be in my itunes library from CDs. What should I do and in which order, to protect my stuff from getting lost with the update?

Backup with iTunes. If iTunes is asking you if you want to backup, say yes to that and it will backup your iPad. Have you ever synced with this computer before?
My boilerplate response for anyone that wants to update the iOS.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

Yes, you could, because in this case you would have something like a backup in the cloud. BTW, personally I also like Flickr. Flickr offers you 1 TB (1000 GB) of free storage and automatic upload for photos since iOS 7 (it is a very attractive offer, at least for me)

  • I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

If you don't have them backed up somewhere, then there's little possibility of recovering them. There are some utilities that can in some cases recover an inadvertently-deleted photo, but I've found none that can recover photos or other data from an iPad that was erased as part of an iOS upgrade. You can do a web search for something like "iPhone photo recovery" and you'll find some utilities you can try.
