Does updating to iOS 6 on the phone waste available space?

It used to be that updating iOS (as opposed to downloading an update and restoring) would "waste) 500 MB each time. I'm wondering whether that is still the case with in-place updating on the iPhone. It does seem that I have a 400 MB less space available since updating from iOS 5.1.1 to 6.

You probably have corrupted files. The update should remove them.
