Does using headphones use less power than using the speakers?

Just wondered if using headphones in a good way to save power when out as I seem to me running larger speakers in the mac would use more energy than little apple pod headphone's.
Perhaps someones looked in to this and know how much power in needed per minute for each.

Very doubtful. For the MBA the two big consumers of electricity will be the CPU and the display's backlight. Following that would be WiFi and BlueTooth.

When using Tab Groups, is less power/memory used or is it the same as when all the tabs are opened in the task bar?

it's just another View for your tabs which needs less *space* in the taskbar, but same *memory* of your computer.
exception: if you (re)start FF and restore the last session (with lots of tabs/groups) there is an option in FF-Settings to load the (content of the) tabs only as soon as they are clicked, and not as soon as FF starts. That trick saves memory.

If the AX is working properly, it should not show up in your list of available networks (since it is "joined" to your router). Have you unplugged and replugged your AX? Unplugged and, after a minute, replugged your router? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router? (if so, disable it to see if the AX works ... it will broadcast its MAC address to the router, and you can add it.) Is your firewall turned on? Turn it off and see if you can access Airtunes. You will have to open a port in your firewall if that is the case.
The AX should have the same network name as your router the wireless tab. When it shows up, what name is it broadcasting?

  • Is it true that sleep consume less power than boot? (MacBook pro late 2011 model)

I have 3 questions here to ask:
    1. Some say that sleep consume less power than boot, but some say it isn't. Which is true? and how it can be?
    2. Is it true that charging your macbook pro until 100% then unplug it will make cycle count go faster than using AC power all day and ONLY using battery when we couldn't find AC outlet will make it slower?
    3. i found that some macbook user leave their macbook charged all the time and some macbook user prefer use battery all the time. Which way is better? i have observed and looked at any apple help topics but couldn't get the answer without any experience from you guys...
I'm so conserned with these issues...
Thank you for your time though, i hope i can find the best solutions here....

Regarding question 1, that's a meaningless question.  Boot uses a specific amount of power, dependent on how much stuff has to start up on your machine and what hardware you have, while sleep uses a trickle over time, so whether this is true depends on what interval of sleeping you're comparing to boot.  There will be a break even point somewhere, but where that might be isn't clear.
Apple recommends sleep over shutdown unless you're going to be away from the computer for a couple days or more.  Of course, I can't find a reference to that document now, but I know it was there at one point in time.  I don't think that the entire issue is power-related, as boot will stress the hardware slightly more (lots of reading from and writing to the hard drive, etc) than sleep.
As to questions 2 and 3, the answer is the same for both.  Your battery lasts for a finite number of cycles before losing capacity.  (How many cycles is a good question, and not an easy one to answer.)  A cycle is defined as going from full to empty, but can be broken up as well.  For example, if you start from full, drain halfway, charge to full again and drain to halfway again, that's one cycle.  So, the more times you charge your battery, the faster it will wear out, but how you do it doesn't matter much.
There are a couple gotchas, though.  First, a battery can wear out prematurely if you never let the electrons "turn over."  You need to use it on battery power sometimes, though it doesn't have to be daily by any means.  Second, if you drain the battery fully, that's not very good for modern batteries.  I wouldn't worry about it now and then, but don't make it a habit of draining it fully.  (Some people erroneously recommend frequently draining the battery fully and then charging it back up to "condition" the battery, but that is not actually good practice.  All Mac portables with built-in batteries do not need conditioning.)
Finally, all this is fairly irrelevant if it interferes with the way you need to use the machine.  Use the machine the way you need to use it, and don't worry so much about adjusting your needs to fit the battery's needs.  If that means you have to replace the battery a little more frequently, so be it.  They're not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

  • Left USB provides less power than right?

I've noticed that my left USB won't power my external HDD. But it seems to provide some power because the light comes on the drive and i can feel it spin some. Plugging it into the right USB works fine. it mounts right up.
any reason why one would give more power than the other?

It's not only a Mac problem, I get the same thing on my desktop Windows PC with it's front two USB ports, if I plug a USB HDD into the front ports the drive just clicks and does not mount but if I plug it into the rear ports no problems - think as S.U. said it's because the front are connected to the MoBo via a header and longish wires so can not provide the power needed to run a device like a HDD ?!

  • Why does Magic Mouse use much more battery power than the keyboard?

I have the Bluetooth versions of the keyboard and the Magic Mouse. I use the same rechargeable batteries in each. Yet the mouse has now come to the end of a THIRD set of AAs, while the keyboard still has 60% of its first set.
Why? They are both constantly in use, so why does the Mouse drain batteries so much faster than the keyboard? Viz: the mouse about once a week (two, max), while at this rate, it will be another month or more before the keyboard drains.

Actually I don't! I consider myself a 'power user' in that I will always use the keyboard first, and I learn keyboard shortcuts for nearly everything I do regularly.
I would guess my use is 50:50 at worst?

  • Using ROWID returns less rows than if use distinct in query

    Hi,
I am writting  the following query to get distinct purchase order number from a specific received date. this returns me total 620 rows.:
select  distinct pha.segment1 from apps.po_headers_all pha, apps.RCV_TRANSACTIONS rcv
    where 1=1
    and trunc(rcv.transaction_date) between to_date(:P_FROM_DATE,'YYYY/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS') and to_date(:P_TO_DATE,'YYYY/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS')
    and pha.po_header_id=rcv.po_header_id
    and pha.type_lookup_code='STANDARD'
    and pha.authorization_status ='APPROVED'
    and pha.cancel_flag='N'
if i write the query using ROWID to get the distinct Purchase order number its giving me 580 rows:
    select  pha.segment1 from apps.po_headers_all pha, apps.RCV_TRANSACTIONS rcv
    where 1=1
    and trunc(rcv.transaction_date) between to_date(:P_FROM_DATE,'YYYY/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS') and to_date(:P_TO_DATE,'YYYY/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS')
    and pha.po_header_id=rcv.po_header_id
    and rcv.rowid=(select max(rowid) from apps.RCV_TRANSACTIONS rcv where rcv.po_header_id=pha.po_header_id)
    and pha.type_lookup_code='STANDARD'
    and pha.authorization_status ='APPROVED'
    and pha.cancel_flag='N';
Can anyone tell me why? I want to use this ROWID query in a valueset in oracle apps.

That's probably because some purchase orders have rcv transactions out of the range (p_from_date, p_to_date). You should include the condition on the dates in the (select max(rowid)...) subquery as well. And more generally, the first query seems like a better/simpler choice than the second one.
    Hope it helps.

  • Why does my Mac Pro always power-up to the recovery partition?

I have a "classic" Mac Pro, I suppose, since it dates from about 2008 - Xeon dual core, though with 10G of RAM.
I installed Lion and everything works fine, except for one thing: whenever I power-up, I start up in the recovery partition. That doesn't actually bother me a lot, but it prevents my wife from using the computer if it's powered off.

Pram reset did the trick. Oddly, I've had my Pro for several years now and this is the first time I remember having to zap the PRAM.
My son (an Apple tech) was nearby today and told me that PRAM Reset (command-option-P-R all held down just before the chime and released after the chime) is the canonical solution for odd boot behavior.
Regarding other suggestions: yes, I did indeed open the Startup Disk selection in the System Preferences. It provided exactly one choice: my legitimate boot disk. Yes, I clicked on it anyway, even though it was the one that was selected already. No, it didn't make a difference.
Perhaps if I had had a choice of bootable disks I might have been able to switch between them and make the problem go away. But I only had one bootable disk to choose from.
I don't use Boot Camp, I run Windows through VMWare.

  • Move large database to other server using RMAN in less downtime

    Hi,
We have large database around 20TB. We want to migrate (move) the database from one server to other server. We do not want to use standby option.
    1)     How can we move database using RMAN in less downtime
    2)     Other than RMAN is there any option is available to move the database to new server
For option 1 (restore using RMAN),
    Whether below options are valid?
If this option is valid, how to implement this?
    1)     How can we move database using RMAN in less downtime
    a)     Take the full backup from source (source db is up)
    b)     Restore the full backup in target (source db is up)
    c)     Take the incremental backup from source (source db is up)
    d)     Restore incremental backup in target (source db is up)
    e)     Do steps c and d, before taking downtime (source db is up)
    f)     Shutdown and mount the source db, and take the incremental backup (source db is down)
    g)     Restore last incremental backup and start the target database (target is up and application is accessing this new db

    Simple:
I do this all the time to relocate file system files... But the principle is the same. You can do this in iterations so you do not need to do it all at once:
Starting 8AM move less-used files and more active files in the afternoon using the following backup method.
    SCRIPT-1
    RMAN> BACKUP AS COPY
    DATAFILE 4 ####"/some/orcl/datafile/usersdbf"
    FORMAT "+USERDATA";
Do as many files as you think you can handle during your downtime window.
During your downtime window: stop all applications so there is no contention in the database
    SCRIPT-2
    ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 4 offline;
    SWITCH DATAFILE 4 TO COPY;
    RECOVER DATAFILE 4;
    ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 4 online;
I then execute the delete of the original file at somepoint later - after we make sure everything has recovered and successfully brought back online.
    SCRIPT-3
    DELETE DATAFILECOPY "/some/orcl/datafile/usersdbf"
For datafiles/tablespaces that are really busy, I typically copy them later in the afternoon as there are fewer archivelogs that it has to go through in order to make them consistent. The ones in the morning have more to go through, but less likelihood of there being anything to do.
Using this method, we have moved upwards 600G at a time and the actual downtime to do the switchover is < 2hrs. YMMV. As I said, this can be done is stages to minimize overall downtime.
If you need some documentation support see:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asm_rman.htm#CHDBDJJG
And before you do ANYTHING... TEST TEST TEST TEST TEST. Create a dummy tablespace on QFS and use this procedure to move it to ASM to ensure you understand how it works.
Good luck! (hint: scripts to generate these scripts can be your friend.)

  • Applescript to "Use headphones"

    Hi,
I have Sony DR-BT22 Bluetooth headphones, and currently I use the following applescript to toggle sound source:
tell application "System Preferences" to reveal anchor "output" of pane id "com.apple.preference.sound"
tell application "System Events" to tell (table 1 of scroll area 1 of tab group 1 of window "Sound" of application process "System Preferences")
set S to selected of rows
if item 1 of S is false then
    select row 1
    else
    select row 2
    end if
    end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to quit
..but headphones produce sound after several (10+ usually) retries.
So I tested something, Instead of toggling sound output, I tried the "Use Headphones" option from the "Bluetooth" preference pane, and it works better!
How do I modify this script to select "Use Headphones" and "Don't use headphones" options instead of directly toggling the sound output?
Thanks in advance for your help!

What if I get a Bluetooth Transmittor, like these:
    http://www.sony.co.in/product/tdm-bt1
    or
    http://www.sony.co.in/product/hws-bta2w
...and let it handle bluetooth audio instead of having my macbook manage it? Will it help?
    Thanks

  • HT1349 Can I use headphones to listen to Pandora radio without it being broadcast through the speakers?

I tried to listen to Pandora radio through the headphones,  without music being broadcast through  the speakers.  Have not been able to do this and want to know if it is possible and how to listen this way.

Yes, listening to Pandora through headphones is no different than listing to any other music/audio through headphones.  When you plug them in your speaker should automatically turn off.  Perhaps there is something wrong with your headphone sensor; try blowing on the opening to see if there is dust/debris getting in the way of its operation.  Sometimes plugging and unplugging your headphone jack multiple times will clear it as well.  If the problem persists take your phone to the Apple store and have them take a look at it.  It should still be under warranty.
