Does using "location services" constitute data useage from AT&T

I travel between Seattle and Vancouver, BC almost every weekend. At the border, I always switch to Airplane Mode since I don't wish to be hit by huge data bills from AT&T through Rogers Wireless, the iPhone carrier in Canada. I then turn on WiFi and use the phone for email, web surfing, etc. and even Skype calls when I have a connection.
My question is, if I turn on "location services" while still in Airplane Mode, will that count as cellular data usage in the eyes of AT&T?

Yes, data roaming is off. In fact, I've never turned it on. Thanks for the quick answer.

Does using location services add to your monthly data use?

It can when using an app that requires or requests location services, when capturing a photo or video with location services enabled for photo/video capture, etc., but the amount of data involved is not great.
The iPhone uses A-GPS or assisted GPS which speeds up the intitial GPS lock from a cold state by using cell phone tower location to speed up the process.

  • My ipod touch is using location services of china and does not show the place where i am living in india.

when i use location services through wi-fi my ipod doesnt show my exact location and uses china as default location , so i am encountering problems while yousing apps like watsapp or wechat etc. plz give me a solution

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. You do not have to be connected to the network/router to use that router's location. Thus, it appears that the iPod can't see a nearby router that is in Apple's database. or finds one that has it location as China.  Apple continuously updated their database based on info they obtain from iPhones. However, I do not know if that applies to India. No one has been able to find a way to inform Apple of a router or correct is location.

  • HT4995 Internationally using Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?

I'm traveling to Europe and I want to use Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?  I want to be able to use Trip Advisor City Guides Application to tour around cities for free.  I have a Verizon International Plan for my trip, but it is still pricey.  I would like to keep my iPhone cell services on for incoming calls, but I want to prevent international data charges.  Thanks for your help!

You don't "choose" to use th 3g network.
If you have paid for it in your plan and 3g coverage is available, your phone will automatically use it when necessary.
3g provides faster internet speeds than 2g, so you can watch video or download stuff faster. Wifi is normally faster than 3g.
Your iphone gps is "assisted", meaning it uses network data to calculate your position.
Also, you would still need the network to download maps, directions etc as they are not on your device.

  • Website not asking permission for using location services in Safari iOS 6

Website is not asking permission for using location services when using Safari mobile  on iOS 6.0 (iPhone 4s)
    Steps to replicate:
    1. Go to http://maps.google.com using Safari
    2. Choose "allow" to use location services
    3. Close Safari and wait 1-2 minutes such that the arrow sign (in the top right) disappears
    4. Go to http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 using Safari
    5. The arrow sign (in the top right) appears showing that the location services are used when viewing http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 (even few hours later)
Why the site http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 is not asking permission to use location services?
The Nature journal (site: ww.nature.com) is not affiliated with Google in any way as far as I know!

I figured out how to stop this from happening. I did 3 things, and I'm not exactly sure which one of them did it because I did them all at the same time.
    1. Turned on Private Browsing
    2. Cleared Cookies and Data
    3. Turned off JavaScript
This stopped time.com from using my location without permission.
I then turned off Private Browsing and went back to the same page, and it continued to NOT use my location.
I'm thinking JavaScript being turned off might be the solution. However, there is a bug that causes JavaScript to turn on again without permission at times:
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/12/21/ios-6-bug-reenables-javascript-in-safa ri-without-user-consent
So just be aware of that. But hopefully doing the above works for you!

  • If I Switch Location Services & Cellular Data Will I Be Charged by the Telcom?

Hi. Will I have additional charges from the cellular company if I switch ON the Location Services and Cellular Data. My SIM, my iPhone is prepaid, I'm not on a plan of any kind. My load credit seems to be consumed too fast and I was only doing very few local SMS messages. I only use wifi for the internet when I'm using the iPhone's Safari or the App Store or YouTube. My iPhone is the 3G (I hope to buy version 5 this October hopefully if it's has significant updates). Thank you in advance. Recommendations to solve this load credite being consumed too fast are welcome.
How about push notification? Does it add to cellular charges.
    Gbu,
    Alvin

If you switch on cellular data and you use safari, YouTube..etc on the cellular network....Yes your are using data.  Hence you are being charged for it.  Some apps use location services .  If that is so then yes it needs to use cell data to track you.  Push notifications as well. Not sure on the 3G depends on iOS version ... Been awile since I've used it..but I know on my iPhone 4 you can turn on and off location services for particular apps.

  • IPhone 6 Motion Calibration Always Using Location Services

    hi
just received my iphone6 and is updated to ios8.
IVe noticed that the location services was constantly on so went through each item which was enabled for location sharing and disabled one by one. I discovered that under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Motion calibration was purple. As soon as I disabled it location sharing icon switched off. As soon as i enabled it it came back on again and the purple icon showed up next to motion calibration meaning it was in use.
So my question....what is motion calibration and why is it constantly using location services??
    thanks

yes i have the same question, new iphone 6, restored from icloud back-up from my iphone 5, and motion calibration is using location services very frequently. it doesn't appear to be draining my battery to badly, but id just like to know exactly what its doing so i can know whether or not i want to  keep it on. turning it off until i know exactly whats its doing.

  • I lost my iPad 3, using location services and know exactly where there device at.  I called police, they show up at that house

I lost my iPad 3, using location services and know exactly where there device at.  I called police, they show up at that house, owner denied he doesn't have it.  I even show officers on my iPhone where the missing iPad at and send message, face time, etc.  But officers said owner don't let's they go inside the house, they can't help me to recover it???!!!
Are officers doing enough or they didn't do it enough to help me recover my missing iPad?
    Thanks...

I don't think Apple's Find My [xxx] has been legally tested as constituing probable cause to issue a search warrant by the DA, so the cops can't go in without an invite. You'll need a good lawyer to go in and force new jurisprudence to occur. By which time, the iGadget will be long gone from the place.
Price to pay for living under the Rule of Law. In shadier parts of the planet, you could get a pack of goons to go in, retrieve the item and pound some common sense into the miscreant.

  • How do I add an app so that it can use Location Services under Mountain Lion?

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my VPN is no longer able to determine my location so that it can connect to the nearest gateway. I have Location Services enabled but my VPN is not listed as an app that is allowed to use it nor can I figure out a way to add it and at no time does it ever ask to use it. So how exactly do I add an app so that it will use Location Services?

    Hi
Is there a way to filter a drop down list by using the result main data display from"GetUserProfileByName" when open the form?

I'm not sure if I understood your question clearly but here is a good resource on how to get attributes from "GetUserProfileByName" web services:
    http://blog.mangroveweb.com/pre-populating-an-infopath-from-with-mysql-data-using-a-net-web-service/using-sharepoints-getuserprofilebyname-web-service-to-retrieve-ad-account-information/
Regarding filtering dropdown list then this could be done by applying form on-load rules.
    Hope this helps

  • How do i use location service to ind my iphone?

how do i use location service to find my lost iphone?

Silica Gel usually comes in a porous bag within a perforated box. Put the bag and the phone in a ziplock bag together. If you buy loose silica gel just put it in the plastic bag, then put the phone on top of it. Try not to get the grains of silica gel in the openings on the phone, as it will be hard to get out.

  • App using Location Services

I am having a problem with my iPad Mini Retina NOT using location services in my local weather app.  I have 2 iPads, the mini and an iPad 4 and the 4 uses location services just fine.  I have checked all the settings and they are exactly the same on both iPads plus I have reset the mini and deleted the weather app and reinstalled.  I did update to IOS 8 hoping somehow that would fix it but did not.  IOS 8 however did not cause the issue (nor any others so far).
On the mini I do get the closest large city that I had already set as an alternate location on both.  Both the primary and alternate are listed on this mini but the mini picks up the alternate instead of the location selected as the primary.  I get an error message that says GPS error.  Advice anyone?

I lost my ipod touch-how do I find it using Location services?

    Joel Zimmerman wrote:
I lost my iPod touch in a club last Saturday. Was on, had a passcode on it but I didn't have Find My iPhone installed. I'm not sure if this is correct information, but an Apple store clerk said that I would still be able to track it if I had registered it with iCloud, which I have done
What you needed to have already done was to have went to Settings>iCloud and turned FindMyiPod on.
. The problem is, though, even if this information is true, how will I be able to find it? It's an iPod touch with no GSM/CDMA capabilities. Therefore, it cannot be found unless it was connected to Wi-Fi.
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. Thus, wifi has to be on.
But how would that be possible unless the person who found it knows my passcode?
Wifi just has to be on and connected to report its postition to you by going to icloud.com as explained in a previous reply.
I'm guessing that if the person wipes and restores the device, I will have no way of finding it... unless it works off the serial number?
If the iPod is restored, you can no longer find it via icloud.com. I uses turning FIndMyiPod on, not the SN,.
    Thanks.
