Does video chat on the new Messager on Mac allow screen share or multiple people?

does video chat on the new Messager on Mac allow screen share or multiple people?
i noticed they said that facetime will basically be taking over video calls on the mac and that Messager will take over ichat, but i'm worried they're going to drop all the nice features they had on ichat, like being able to share screens while video chatting with someone. or being able to chat with 2 people at once on a video call.
has anyone downloaded the beta of this yet and tried it out? i'm very curious

Hi,
You can start a Video chat with one Buddy and then chose Screen Share and providing you and the Buddy are using UPnP to open ports it will instantly convert to a Screen Share.
A Screen Share is only 1-1 and is technically an Audio Chat +
The Plus bit is an VNC connection alongside the Audio Chat.
This VNC connection uses a random port - hence the need to use UPnP to open the ports in the router (Or Port Mapping Protocol) in  Apple Base Station.
There used to be Add-ons that allowed the Desktop as Video Feed which would have been a sort of Screen Share but none of these have been updated for Lion.
An Example is iUSBCam  (ShowMacster was another - My link no longer works)
CamCamX maybe a possibility if it works in Lion  (It does say it neess iUSBCam for iChat)

  • How do i video chat on the new imessage

everytime i sent a video chat request it just says waiting for _____ to answer, and

    Hi,
In the new Messages App you can have an iMessages account and older "iChat" type accounts
iMessages accounst are created with registering an Apple ID which can also be used on iPhone and iPads or iPod touches and iMessages are then synced across all devices.
It is an Apple Only service and is text only
In the Main Message Window/interface once you have starts an iMessage chat you can use the Video icon which will start up FaceTime to Video Chat
    "iChat" Type accounts
Messages in built on top of what was iChat and you can still use the Names and IDs that you used in iChat.
You can see lowere left in the pic I have 10 such accounts logged in (The pic also indicates I keep the Buddy Lists separate - if you use the combined list the view is different).
You can then work two ways
Starting a chat like the iMessages way but to an AIM Buddy (or Jabber) and than also use the Video icon and this will start an A/V chat in Messages.
Example pic of a chat between two of those Logins
Here the Video icon will start an "iChat" Style chat (if it were an outside Buddy - obviously I can't video to myself on the same computer)
The alternative is to have the Buddy lists On show and work from a Buddy list and it's icons
This is the same Account as the above pic but in the Buddy list.
You can start from the Green icons or highlight a Buddy and use the bottom icons (or the Buddies Menu) or right click a Buddy.
To Unlink Combined Buddy list go to Messages Menu > Preferences > General Section and untick the line about Gathering all Accounts into one list  (It's actually all Non iMessages accounts as the iMessages account does not have a Buddy list)

  • Better video cards for the new 8-core Mac Pro...?

I don't know a ton about video cards. I did some research and the internet says that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 video card is the best card out right now. Will it work in the 8-core macpro? If not, or if it's not the best, what is the best video card that will work in the 8-core macpro?
    P.S.
Does anyone know how to tell exactly whether a video card is better from another? I mean I can guess a video card at 1792MB is going to be better then one at 512MB, but I've also heard that, for example, the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB is better then the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB, and apple charges more for it so it probably is better, but all that tells me is the name of the cards, and that they are both at 512MB, so from that without any other information I would assume they're exactly the same just made by different companies, but there must be some other details that would explain why it's better right? Thanks in advance

Well I found out the Quadro FX 4800 works on it, that looks pretty good.
It's a good card, but it has a different application focus.
    What applications do you use?
Answering that helps determine what the best card is.
The 5800 is better though, will it work?
    Better, how?
    The spec's read better?
    How about real world performance?
    Benchmarks?
They are very similar in shape and such.
Shape has little to do with anything.
    The ROM is the key.
If the card is not produced as "OS X compatible", it does not have Mac ROM and cannot be used.
If there is a Mac edition that is similar (same GPU series, similar architecture) the ROM may be flashed to Mac ROM.
Especially in Geforce cards, the ability to edit ROMs and even write portions of the ROM is necessary to be able to flash a card.
    Even then, no guarantees.
Often a port on a flashed card won't work after flashing.
Seems the 5800 has a 10 bit display port, so if the card were flashable, the display port wouldn't work.
The ROM chip size of a card is also of concern.
Many cards require either a new, larger ROM chip to accept the Mac ROM (soldering), or, require a hacked, "reduced" ROM to be written to allow flash.
Invariably, there will be some feature loss with a reduced ROM, but a good hacker usually gets rid of superfluous stuff.
Cards with more VRAM than the Mac counterpart will often times lose the extra VRAM- it won't be read by OS X.
Then there is the EFI question, which often creates a final stumbling block for converting a card.
There are many pioneers who flash cards.
If a card is flashable, it has already been done.
The Quadro 4500, 4800, and 5600 have all been worked out.
As of yet, the 5800 hasn't been sussed out for flash (as far as I can find).
    Flashing the card is easy.
Finding a physically compatible card and a compatible ROM are the hard parts.
The two best retail cards for the Mac Pro are the Geforce GTX 285 and the Radeon HD 4870.

  • How does Thunderbird post the 'new message' notice on my Mac?

I am trying to determine the service Thunderbird uses to post 'new message' notification pop-ups at the upper right of my terminal (they appear to be posted in the main menu of the system).
Actually, some other app has rarely posted similar pop-ups .... but they don't persist long enough for me to read, so I'm really trying to find out if these pop-ups are logged anywhere that I can inspect.
Thunderbird didn't generate the pop-ups, but knowing how it generates them may help me
I'm still running OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on my 1st gen intel mac, so I started my inquiry in the apple snow leopard forum where I was told that a pop-up service wasn't native in Snow Leopard, but some apps, including apple mail and Thunderbird, used Growl to post the pop-ups. A search of Thunderbird's add-ons ... and indeed a search (using the System Profiler) of apps, extensions and frameworks did not reveal anything with 'growl' in its name.
So .... I'm not really having trouble with Thunderbird, but if someone knows how it invokes the 'new message' pop-up in the main menu, maybe there's a place where such messages get logged and I can inspect it to view the pop-ups (from another app) that are disappearing too quickly for me to read.
    Anyone have any helpful info?
    Useful specs:
    machine: 1st gen intel Mac
    os: OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    Thunderbird version: 24.5.0

    Settings>Messages>Show Preview>Off.
However, there is no way to completely turn off the popup alert, just the preview.

  • Odd behavior during full screen video chat with Mountain Lion Messages?

I've recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on two MacBook Pros (from Lion) and have started to use the new Messages app. I've been using iChat for years and found it reliable for the most part.
However, I've noticed a new behavior that seems like a bug in the new Messages app.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open Messages app
    2. Initiate a non-FaceTime video chat via the Buddy List or the main Messages window video button
    3. Once the video is started, click on the Full Screen button in the window title bar or in the black toolbar at the bottom of the video
    4. After the video has gone full screen, move the mouse cursor
    5. At this point, the video will slide over (like a Mission Control / Exposé space). The video chat is actually STILL running in full screen view as a dedicated space -- you can slide back with the trackpad or the keyboard as per normal Mission Control controls.
Step 5 is NOT the correct behavior as per OS X 10.7 Lion. Not to mention, the black toolbar is unusable and it's hard to reach the menu bar Full Screen toggle button since moving the cursor even one pixel makes the screen slide over.
Has anyone experienced this? If yes, is there a solution? How do we bring this to Apple's attention for a future fix?

I got the machine to reboot but I had to hold down the power button. I found an article on macworld that said to use the command +control+eject buttons to restart but no go. Nothing.
There really... REALLY ought to be some way to exit full screen in such a case.

I was running KeyPassFox with Firefox 8.0.1, but the plugin does not work in the new release (9) . Is there a way to restore my previous version with all of my bookmarks intact? I do not mind if I have to restore the plugins myself.
The plugin shows on the list as enabled and functioning, yet the tool does not show on the toolbar. It would appear that I need to restore the previous version of Firefox and wait until a newer release of the plugin is available before upgrading the browser.

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

New Messages sound quits after several messages have arrived. I've tried several passes at resolving but nothing I have done seems to work. Sometimes I have to reboot the imac several times to get the New Messages Sounds back. Everything else works. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the OS and that seems foolhardy.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

  • Apple aware of video problem in the new Intel iMacs

    Macworld Daily News
    Thursday - February 09, 2006
Apple investigates Intel iMac Front Row problems
    By Macworld staff
Apple has confirmed it is aware of, and investigating, reports of video problems in the new Intel iMacs.
Recent reports claimed that some users had experienced random horizontal lines and other video playback problems when playing video in Front Row.
"Apple is aware of this issue and is looking into it," the company said in an email to a web-based pressure group that has been gathering information on the problem. "If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare."
    The problem is allegedly software-based.

"Sure, I'd be more understanding had it been an issue that required a very special set of conditions to trigger"
Apparently it does as this issue is not affecting all users.
"As I was told, affected owners would not be proactively notified"
Where you you prefer them to use their limited resources, trying to figure out who MAY be affected and sending them some sort of detailed action plan, or spending the resources determining the cause of the issue and developing a solution that can be distributed to the ones who need it not only now, but those that may discover the issue next week?
I can understand that you are frustrated, and don't blame you for feeling that way, but this is an all new piece of technology and bugs are going to come up that were missed in testing. No company can afford to test at a 100% level. To do so would drive the costs so high as to make it impossible to sell the product, especially to the market the iMac is aimed at. Apple has a pretty darned good track record of resolving issues quickly when they appear. Until they do you only have a few choices. Use the workaround until the solution appears, waste time complaining about it, or sell the iMac and purchase a different product. That's really about all you can do!
It was good of you to spend your valuable time, and yes it is valuable, trying to help the engineers or service reps solve the issue. That they spent that much time with you should show their commitment to solving this issue.
Be patient, give them a chance, they have not had long to try and figure this out.

  • [svn:fx-trunk] 12025: Switching out the old video component for the new video component that uses OSMF .

    Revision: 12025
    Revision: 12025
    Author:   [email protected]
    Date:     2009-11-19 17:48:04 -0800 (Thu, 19 Nov 2009)
    Log Message:
Switching out the old video component for the new video component that uses OSMF.  Also fixing RSL issue with OSMF because a change in flex-config.xml accidentally got overwritten.  Also fixing a bug caught during the last code review where you would set the volume on the VideoPlayer, but the volumeBar wouldn't be made aware of that change.
Switching out the video component results in many API changes.  The changes are highlighted below:
    Class name changes:
    - spark.primitives.VideoElement is being renamed to spark.components.VideoDisplay
    - spark.components.mediaClasses.StreamingVideoSource is renamed to park.components.mediaClasses.DynamicStreamingVideoSource
    - spark.components.mediaClasses.StreamItem is renamed to park.components.mediaClasses.DynamicStreamingVideoItem
    VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer event changes:
The new video component's events are:
    - bytesLoadedChange : org.osmf.events.LoadEvent
    - currentTimeChange : org.osmf.events.TimeEvent
    - durationChange : org.osmf.events.TimeEvent
    - mediaPlayerStateChange : org.osmf.events.MediaPlayerStateChangeEvent
The old video component's events were:
    - close : spark.events.VideoEvent (removed)
    - complete : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
    - metaDataReceived : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
    - playheadUpdate : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with currentTimeChange)
    - progress : flash.events.ProgressEvent (replaced with bytesLoadedChange)
    - ready : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
    VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer property changes:
    Renames:
    - maintainAspectRatio:Boolean has been renamed to scaleMode:String and rather than true/false, it now access 4 values: none, zoom, letterbox, and stretch.  See the enum class org.osmf.display.ScaleMode.
    - playheadTime:Number has been renamed to currentTime:Number
    - playWhenHidden has been renamed to pauseWhenHidden, and it's "tense" has been reversed.  So playWhenHidden = true correlates to pauseWhenHidden = false.  Also, before we would only pause when the video component was explcitly set to visible=false, but now we detect if the video components or any of it's ancestors have been hidden.
    - totalTime:Number has been renamed to duration:Number
    New properties:
    - bytesLoaded:Number This is a new property not available on the old video component
    - bytesTotal:Number This is a new property not available on the old video component
    - loop: Boolean this was a property added a while ago on the old video component but not in the original video player spec
    - mediaPlayerState: this is a new property that details the state of the video component.  See org.osmf.media.MediaPlayerState for all the possible values.
    - seekToFirstFrame:Boolean (pending PARB approval) - This is a new property available on VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer.  When autoPlay = false, if seekToFirstFrame is set to true, then we will connect to the server to start downloading the video, figure out the size of the video and resize appropriately, and show the first frame of the video.  If seekToFirstFrame is false, then no connection to the server is made, there's no implicit size for this video, and the first frame will not be show automatically.  By default the value of this property is true.  In the old video component, when autoPlay = false, we always has the same behavior as seekToFirstFrame = true.  Now it is controllable through this property.  Eventually, (not for Flex 4.0), we will most-likely have support for a thumbnail source or a splash screen so the video's preview will show up without making an unneeded connection to the server.  The property name may change depending on PARB.
    Other changes:
    - autoRewind: The default of autoRewind is now true instead of false
    - enabled: before we paused the video when the video component was explicitly set to enabled = false.  Now we pause the video when the video component or any of it's ancestors have been disabled.
    VideoPlayer-only changes:
    - videoObject:flash.media.Video property is now a new property on VideoPlayer.  It was previously only on VideoDisplay.
    - The skin states for the old VideoPlayer were: connectionError, disabled, disconnected, loading, playing, stopped, connectionErrorAndFullScreen, disabledAndFullScreen, disconnectedAndFullScreen, loadingAndFullScreen, playingAndFullScreen, stoppedAndFullScreen.  The new skin states are: uninitialized, loading, ready, playing, paused, buffering, playbackError, disabled, uninitializedAndFullScreen, loadingAndFullScreen, readyAndFullScreen, playingAndFullScreen, pausedAndFullScreen, bufferingAndFullScreen, playbackErrorAndFullScreen, disabledAndFullScreen
    DynamicStreamingVideoItem property changes:
    - bitRate:Number renamed to bitrate:Number
    DynamicStreamingVideoSource property changes:
    - initialIndex has been added to DynamicSteramingVideoSource
    - live:Boolean has changed to streamType:String which accepts values: live, recorded, any.  See the enum class org.osmf.net.StreamType for more info.
    - serverURI:String renamed to host:Object
    - streamItems:Array has changed types to streamItems:Vector.
ScrubBar property changes (THESE CHANGES ARE NOT DONE YET, BUT SHOULD BE DONE SOON)
    - bufferedStart will be removed
    - bufferedEnd will be renamed to loadedRangeEnd.  This property name still may change depending on PARB.
    - bufferedArea skin part needs to be renamed.  Probably will be renamed to loadedArea.  PARB still deciding.

  • Why doesn't the new message indicator number match the number of new messages I have or don't have?

I am using a MacBook Pro and the new message indicator has stopped tracking correctly. For example, I have read all the messages in the inbox and the new message indicator still says that I have 5 new messages. Other times I have a new message and it is not registering with the indicator.
I have tried shutting Mail down and reopening it. This does reconcile the indicator but does not solve the problem. I have checked for and installed any updates. I am using Mail Version 7.3 (1878.6) and OS X Version 10.9.4
