Does VPN works in Firewall Active Active failover mode?

i want to clarify these two things!
1. Does VPN works in failover mode in Active/Active mode?
2. What about in Failover mode Active/Pasive?
Regards!

Hi,
Using an Active/Active Failover means that the Firewalls will be in Multiple Context mode. In other words virtual firewalls.
This means that you can ONLY use IPsec L2L VPN connections on the virtual firewalls if you are running 9.x software level on the firewalls. Any form of Client and Clientless VPN isnt supported in Multiple Context Mode at the moment.
Now with Active/Standby we have to make a distinction (if that was the word).
IF you run a normal Active/Standby Failover pair of ASAs that IS NOT in Multiple Context mode YOU CAN use any type of VPN the ASAs support.
IF you run a a pair of ASAs in Multiple Context Mode and in Active/Standby Mode you will naturally run into the limitation of VPN support in Multiple Context Mode and WILL NOT be able to use any other VPNs other than IPsec L2L VPN connections provided you are running 9.x software that supports it.
Hope this helps

  • FWSM 4.0: switch from active/standby to active/active failover mode

    Hello,
    I have a pair of FWSM's running version 4.0 currently in active/standby failover mode, and I'd like to switch them to be active/active.  Is there a documented procedure for doing this?  What are the implications for any contexts switched to be primary on the FWSM that is currently acting as a standby (i.e., what kind of outage time can we expect)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi Bro
    Thanks for the update, but still you'll need to create 2 contexts, each context will be ACTIVE on different Cisco ASA FW units. Hence, there will be some cut, copy and paste effort, not forgetting recabling, if that's needed. Here's a Cisco document to configure ACTIVE/ACTIVE for those who can't seem to find this document http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a0080834058.shtml#req
    Conclusion: There will be some network downtime. I'm guessing 15min, if it was me :-)
    P/S: If you think this comment is helpful, please do rate it nicely :-)

  • ValidateXML does not work with Pick Activity?

    Hi All,
    I have a BPEL process which receives message using a pick activity, my requirement is to Validate the input message against the XSD.
    For this, i tried using the ValidateXML (bpelx:validate variables="varName") and then catch this exception using "invalidVariables" exception.
    But i am getting the below error:
    <part name="summary">
    <summary>
    Invalid xml document.
    According to the xml schemas, the xml document is invalid. The reason is: Error::cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'payload'.
    Please make sure that the xml document is valid against your schemas.
    </summary>
    My WSDL message and portType is given below:
    <message name="ValidateXMLPOCRequestMessage">
    <part name="payload" element="ns2:ValidateXMLRequest"/>
    </message>
    <message name="ValidateXMLPOCResponseMessage">
    <part name="payload" element="ns2:ValidateXMLResponse"/>
    </message>
    <portType name="ValidateXMLPOC">
    <operation name="createOp">
    <input message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCRequestMessage"/>
    <output message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCResponseMessage"/>
    </operation>
    <operation name="updateOp">
    <input message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCRequestMessage"/>
    <output message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCResponseMessage"/>
    </operation>
    <operation name="cancelOp">
    <input message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCRequestMessage"/>
    <output message="tns:ValidateXMLPOCResponseMessage"/>
    </operation>
    </portType>
    Also, the same seems to be working using a standard Synchronous BPEL process. (i.e ValidateXML on the XSD)
    Any help regarding this is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Shreyas

    Hi All,
    To update on this thread...
    The issue has been resolved, looks like ValidateXML was not working directly on the MessageType variable in bpel and hence was throwing that error.
    Solution: 1) Create a variable of type 'Element' based on the XSD
    2) Then transform the onMessage variable from the pick activity to the newly created variable.
    3) Validate this Element type variable using the "bpelx:validate name="someName" variables="newlyCreatedElementTypeVar"
    4) You can catch this exception thrown using the "invalidVariables" exception, in the catch block.
    Regards,
    Shreyas

  • IChat AV does not work behind firewall even after opening up correct ports

    Hi. I am trying to get my iChat setup so that I can do video and audio. It works fine when my mac is directly plugged into the cable modem. When I plug it into my firewall it will not connect. I have read many online manuals and forums and I have tried opening many ports etc on the fire wall. I am using a MBP thats running the latest software. This is clearly an external firewall issue because my MBP works fine without the firewall.
    Here is what I have forwarded.
    Ports to Open on Firewall.... BOLD LAN ports only.
    TCP: 5220, 5222, 5223
    UDP: 5060, 5297, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403
    TCP/UDP: 5180, 5190, 5298
    according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507
    It attempts to connect then fails. I have run it in terminal to try to catch the error logs and figure out what is going on. I have the complete error logs from three seperate attempts if that would help.
    The firewall is a FreeBSD based firewall running pfsense. It is also controlling DHCP. My MBP is connecting to the network via a Time Capsule which has been set to not do DHCP and instead forward to the firewall/router. When my MBP connects it is always assigned the same IP based on its mac address. All the firewall rules are set to that IP. Any idea whats going on here?

    I opened all of the right ports. it seems my firewall was randomizing outgoing ports as a security feature and this was messing with the SIP protocol creating a successful connection. I set my outgoing port to be static and now everything works fine!

  • My setting have changed: location in navigation toolbar does not work; there is no firefox safe mode in folder

    Something has changed in my settings. If I have the navigation toolbar, my page extends all the way across the screen and I can not see the right hand part. There is nothing in location and I can not enter anything in it. I just get a message that page does no exist when I try. I can not start firefox in the safe mode as it does not exist in my folder. and there is no folder containing my localstore.rdf.

    Hi Peter,
    I'm using IE8 to view the help as this is our target but I've also tested with Firefox 3.6.8. The behaviour remains the same in all cases.
    In addition I have tested the same System Administrator help module:
    while resident on my C:\
    while resident on a shared networked drive (inside and outside of my network domain); and
    while hosted on a SharePoint server.
    I spotted this problem while testing our upgrade from RH7 to RH9 but I've since tested earlier versions of the deliverables and found that the problem was there when we were using RH7; we simply missed it .
    Here is the help prior to clicking on the hyperlinked text to the unreferenced-topic:
    Here is the target topic with the navigation pane collapsed and clicking the index button to demonstrate that nothing happens:
    On clicking "Home" in the breadcrumb trail (top right of prev. topic), the topic is displayed but the helpset does not refresh nor is there a "Show" link to open the pane, as one gets when directly opening the Home page by double-clicking:
    Any help appreciated.
    Regards,
    Charles

Watched and followed Youtube video's on how to reair Adobe flash, still does not work. Tried disabling then unistalled and reinstalled, then enabled again, still does not work. Used the adobe Check from adobe website after uninstalling and reinstalling at least twenty times, still shows NOT Installed or enabled, downloaded again from adobe site, still not working, showing either not installed or enabled, check wether enabled or not, still enabled, went under Downloads on my computer, download is there, looked under programs, Adobe is in program menu on computer, still does not work. This is a known problem with Internet Explorer 11, which Microsoft has been aware of since October 18 when they released their latest "untested" browser. The pages can't recognize the browser, so they don't recognize any of the plugins, like Flash Player. So far, Microsoft has made NO indication that they have any plan to fix it soon.
    Microsoft's recommendation is to use Compatibility View for affected pages, and "pretend" you're using an different browser. Trouble with that is it has seen limited success at best, and you have to individually enable it for EVERY page that has problems.
    I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser.
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Opera (from Opera)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Chrome (from Google)
    ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.

    Resetting the DNS cache does not seem to work on OS X 10.8, what does really work?
    Desired activity: access a site that used to not have a SSL connection through the new https:// root domain. I can accomplish the task over a machine running Windows 7 or XP but flushing the dns of my mac does not affect the outcome — I am still redirected to the hosting provider's website whenever I tried to access the domain with a https:// prefix rather than http://
    I tried sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and it's older alternative but no luck.

    In the terminal:
    dscacheutil -flushcache
    and to get a very detailed report on the state of your DNS cache in /var/logs/system.log:
    sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder

  • How does it work the reading (list) function on a mac?

    Hello there,
    Well, I was wondering how does it work, I mean, What's necessary to get this funtion work.. When you're reading something you see that there's is an options it lets you to get in a reading mode but sometimes some web pages won't let you do that
    Why?
    How does it work?
    Shortcuts:
    To show reading mode (shift + comand + R)
    To show the list bookmarks (shift + cmd + L)
    Thank you very much

    Then there's something going on with Safari on your Mac.
    Try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
    If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
    Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • HT5096 This procedure absolutely does NOT work

    Because of the sparse storage format of the Backups.backupdb directory, the Finder thinks the directory is much larger than it actually is. In fact, in many cases, such as mine, it thinks that it is MUCH larger than the physical drive on which it resides.
    For example, I have a 1TB drive and the Time Machine directory claims to be more than 5TB. When I go to copy it over to another 1TB drive it says that it cannot execute the copy because the size is too large and there is not enough room. Although there actually is enough room.
    In any case, the procedure outlined in this memo ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT WORK.

    Try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] and see if that helps!

    This topic has been beat to death, but I did not see a real answer. Here is configuration:
    1) 2 x ASA 5520, running 8.2
    2) Both ASA are in same outside and inside interface broadcast domains – common Ethernet on interfaces
    3) Both ASA are running single context but are active/standby failovers of each other. There are no more ASA’s in the equation. Just these 2. NOTE: this is not a Active/Active failover configuration. This is simply a 1-context active/standby configuration.
    4) I want to share VPN load among two devices and retain active/standby failover functionality. Can I use VPN load balancing feature?
    This sounds trivial, but I cannot find a clear answer (without testing this); and many people are confusing the issue. Here are some examples of confusion. These do not apply to my scenario.
    Active/Active failover is understood to mean only two ASA running multi-contexts. Context 1 is active on ASA1 Context 2 is active on ASA2. They are sharing failover information. Active/Active does not mean two independently configured ASA devices, which do not share failover communication, but do VPN load balancing. It is clear that this latter scenario will work and that both ASA are active, but they are not in the Active/Active configuration definition. Some people are calling VPN load balancing on two unique ASA’s “active/active”, but it is not
    The other confusing thing I have seen is that VPN config guide for VPN load balancing mentions configuring separate IP address pools on the VPN devices, so that clients on ASA1 do not have IP address overlap with clients on ASA2. When you configure ip address pool on active ASA1, this gets replicated to standby ASA2. In other words, you cannot have two unique IP address pools on a ASA Active/Standby cluster. I guess I could draw addresses from external DHCP server, and then do some kind of routing. Perhaps this will work?
    In any case, any experts out there that can answer question? TIA!

    Wow, some good info posted here (both questions and some answers). I'm in a similar situation with a couple of vpn load-balanced pairs... my goal was to get active-standby failover up and running in each pair- then I ran into this thread and saw the first post about the unique IP addr pools (and obviously we can't have unique pools in an active-standby failover rig where the complete config is replicated). So it would seem that these two features are indeed mutually exclusive. Real nice initial post to call this out.
    Now I'm wondering if the ASA could actually handle a single addr pool in an active-standby fo rig- *if* the code supported the exchange of addr pool status between the fo members (so they each would know what addrs have been farmed out from this single pool)? Can I get some feedback from folks on this? If this is viable, then I suppose we could submit a feature request to Cisco... not that this would necessarily be supported anytime soon, but it might be worth a try. And I'm also assuming we might need a vip on the inside int as well (not just on the outside), to properly flip the traffic on both sides if the failover occurs (note we're not currently doing this).
    Finally, if a member fails in a std load-balanced vpn pair (w/o fo disabled), the remaining member must take over traffic hitting the vip addr (full time)... can someone tell me how this works? And when this pair is working normally (with both members up), do the two systems coordinate who owns the vip at any time to load-balance the traffic? Is this basically how their load-balancing scheme works?
    Anyway, pretty cool thread... would really appreciate it if folks could give some feedback on some of the above.
    Thanks much,
    Mike

    Its possible that the server can be down now. Have you ever used it before?  If you want, try resseting the phone by just holding the sleep/wake key and the home button together for 10 seconds.  Then wait 5 seconds when it turns off and press the sleep/wake button to turn it back on.  Then try it again.  Let me know what the results are.

    Yes, this is activation lock. Return the phone for a refund, as it is useless without the activation information of the previous owner.
