Does watching videos on iTunes U use data?

A couple weeks ago I was watching videos on my iPhone from iTunes U while at home connected to Wi-fi. I found out that my video streaming using 200+ MB of data and ended up costing me a lot.
I considered that maybe the Wi-fi just wasn't working but now yesterday I was watching another video. I kept checking to make sure that the Wi-fi was on and working. Yet from just watching a couple 5-10 min videos, I used around 70 MB of data.
Is anyone aware of how iTunes U shares course information (in particular the videos)? I just assumed that it would use Wi-Fi if I was home but that does not seem to be the case.
I have 90% sure that this is not an issue with my Wi-Fi at home.
It there a way to make sure that iTunes does not use data to stream videos. I can't afford to be watching them otherwise.
Many thanks to anyone who can help,
Diana-Marie

You could try going to settings, general, network, and turning cellular data off. Then try using itunes university. That will let you know if it's able to use wi-fi or not.

  • No Wi-Fi after using Apple TV to watch video from iTunes?

After watching video from iTunes library on ATV2 , when trying to use mac afterwards wi-fi slow or stopped. I Have to unplug router to get it working again. Don't think its always being like this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • Hi I'm new in this Ae and i loved it and started to get into editing but when i watch videos on how to use effects like magnify and CC light burst 2.5 it doesn't work why?

hi I'm new in this Ae and i loved it and started to get into editing but when i watch videos on how to use effects like magnify and CC light burst 2.5 it doesn't work why?

First, I want to clear up some vocabulary issues. After Effects is not intended for editing video. Editing involves cutting shots together to tell a story. Premiere Pro edits video. While you technically can cut video together in AE, Premiere is much, much better for that.
After Effects is used for creating shots - visual effects, compositing, motion graphics, animation, color correction, color grading, etc.
What exact version number of AE (down to the decimal points) are you using? Plus the questions Todd asked, plus the info in the link he gave.
Also, if you're new to AE, you should really start here. This resource will give you a foundation in how to actually use After Effects that will probably clear up your current problem and prevent much more frustration in the future.

  • Does watching iTunes purchases use data?

I recently disconnected the WiFi I normally use so I haven't been able to stream videos online.  Instead I have been watching my purchased TV episodes from my iTunes but on the top left by the 3G sign, the circular icon moves as if it is using 3G to watch the video.  I'm concerned about my data useage limit so would like to know if watching iTunes purchases is in fact using 3G data.

Turn off the 3G service and should have nothing to worry about.
Once you have completely downloaded a TV show or a movie, you do not need an Internet connection to watch them so just turn off the service - period.
I assume that the iPad is searching for a signal even if you are not currently using the Internet so I would imagine that you are still using some data - maybe e very small amount - but some data anyway.
I should stress that I am assuming this - it makes sense to me, I don't have a 3G iPad, but if you turn off the cellular service, you can't be using data.

  • Why does "itunes accounts" use data with all settings OFF?

Does anyone know how to keep "iTunes accounts" under system from using cellular data?
    I have already:
    1. Toggled OFF all settings in the "Use cellular data for" menu.
    2. Turned OFF all automatic downloads and any other options under iTunes/app store settings.
    3. Turned OFF Background App refresh.
    4. Turned OFF all options under iCloud sync menu.
Right now, the only thing that keeps "iTunes accounts" from pulling cellular data is turning Cellular Data completely OFF, but I don't want to do this because I lose some messaging and voicemail functions and I need to be able to use Find My Phone. I have two identical iPhone 5c's on this account. One is running iOs 8.1.2 and the above settings control it's data usage nicely. The other phone is running iOs 8.1.3 and this one uses 50-100 mb a day even with all the above settings off and the phone almost always on wifi.
I am aware that the phone will lose it's wifi connection when asleep, but that shouldn't be a problem if all the apps/settings are already set not to use cellular data. What am I missing. I've read a bunch of threads on this issue and they all suggest settings I already have OFF.

My personal phone is on 8.1.2. My daughter's phone is 8.1.3.
It is her phone that is currently having this problem, but I reported it under my account; sorry for the confusion.
My phone has had some data problems in the past, but I have been able to control them by keeping almost all data options OFF and the overall switch ON. My usage is back to less than 50 mb per month which makes sense since my phone is almost always on wifi and I don't use data dense applications.
Everything about my daughter's phone is the same as mine except for the 8.1.3 upgrade. She does use things like Instagram more than I do, but I have them all set to not use Cellular Data and the option to change these settings is locked. When I look at the usage on her phone, it isn't her apps that are pulling unexpected data; it's "iTunes accounts" under system services. All the options under iTunes/App Store (auto downloads, home sharing, etc.) and all the iCloud options are already OFF.

  • AirPort Express - watch video in itunes with SOUND via AirPort Express?

Ok I read it is only possible via Airfoil...
Sorry to bother you guys - no idea how to delee this...
    Hello everyone!
I was overly excited to receive the airport express 802.11n Wi-Fi
and everything works wonderfully. But some trouble arose non the less:
The reason for the wireless AirPort was to allow projecting Videos via a Beamer on the wall
and have fantastic sound, even though the soundsystems are standing elsewhere.
But when opening itunes (it works with normal music just fine) and starting a purchased video there,
there is no way I can choose the external soundsystem to be used to generate the sound.
This drives me nuts! It would be really silly to not be able to use a soundtransmitter by apple
when watching a video by apple's itunes, wouldn't it? That makes no sense.
Please tell me there is a way to make it work....
Thank you for your time and help!
    Lia

Apple does offer an option that does both. It's called the Apple TV.

  • Help! Dataman says iTunes is using data when it's not even open.

    Hi all,
Over the past two months I have been using unusually high amounts of data.
At first I thought it was because I was streaming Podcasts. Yesterday I deleted the Postcasts app to see if it made any difference to the data I was using and downloaded DataMan app to confirm this.
Now every time I check DataMan it shows iTunes using the most data, but iTunes isn't even open!
I've closed all the programs running in the background and am wondering - where is this data usage coming from? What else can I do to stop this usage?
Could it be a faulty report from DataMan? I don't believe that is the case because the usage the app is reporting is very close to what my provider is telling me as well.
I've attached an image of the DataMan report so you can all see what I mean.. Any help would be appreciated!

No, but ITunes helper does??? Not sure where this is launched/closed from.

  • Does syncing apps to itunes save game data

I want to know if I sync my apps to iTunes (which I do) does it save my game data/levels/files.
I recently had to restore my iPod Touch 4g and when I got my apps back from iTunes my game files were saved but they were old versions.  I synced to iTunes just the day before I had to restore.  But my game levels were that of 1 week ago.  So how do I sync my game levels so that if I ever have to restore again I will have my levels.  Thanks.

App data and settings are part of the backup. But, as every backup replaces the old one, you'll have to include your backup folder in your computer backup routine, to be sure to have several backups to go back.
Only if you use a backup to restore from, iTunes will create a new one and mark the old one with a time stamp.
Check this article for more info and about details where the backup folder is stored for your OS:

  • Can/how do i make an iTunes library using data (songs, apps, e.t.c.) to my computer.

Not all my music is on my old computer, and no apps are. This is as I exported the library to my D: drive, added more stuff, while syncing to it, then re-imported it. My iPod is on iOS 4 and want to upgrade to 5, but if I do, then I will lose all my apps, and most of my music. I recently got a new computer with a new iTunes library (empty). Is there any way I can 'make' a new library using my iPod touch data, so I can get iOS 5?

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the new computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iOd from that backup. This will also update the iPod's iOS.

  • IPhone 6 does not show in iTunes when using WiFi

My iPhone 6+ shows up in iTunes when connected via USB. But if I disconnect the cable and turn off iTunes and then come back later it does not show up like my iPhone 5 did using OS 7.
I have the option selected in iTunes to "automatically connect using WiFi".
I have tried turning off my phone and restarting iTunes but it does not help.
    Any suggestions?

    Greetings Paul,
It sounds as though you are attempting to sync with iTunes via WiFi, and are running into some complications. After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iTunes WiFi sync:
    Sync using Wi-Fi
    Open iTunes
To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable.
Click the Device button in the upper-right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button first.) If you don't see your device, choose View > Hide Sidebar.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi."
When the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync automatically when the following conditions are true:
    The iOS device is charging.
iTunes is open on the computer.
The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
While the iOS device is in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.
If the iOS device doesn't appear in the Devices section or you can't sync, please try these steps.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    BobbyD
