To oversimplify, PDFs are for the user to read, and derivatives of the HTML versions are for the computer to read. Both formats are, of course, readily recognized and indexed by Spotlight. Journal articles have two essential components with regards to a database: the topical content of the article itself, and the cited references to other scientific literature. While a PDF merely lists these references, the HTML version has, in addition, links to the cited items. Each link URL contains the digital object identifier (doi) for the item it points to. A doi is a unique string that points to one and only one object, and can be quite useful if rendered in a manner that enables indexing by Spotlight. Embedded URL's are, of course, ignored by Spotlight. As a result, HTML-formatted articles must be processed so that URL's are openly displayed as readable text before Spotlight will recognize them. Conversion to DOC format using MS Word, followed by conversion to RTF using Text Edit accomplishes this, but is quite labor intensive.
In the last few months, I have added about 3,500 articles to this collection, which means that any procedure for rendering URL's must be automated and able to process large batches of documents with minimal user oversight. This procedure needs to generate a separate file for each HTML document processed. Trials using Automator's "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Get Selected Finder Items", as well as "Ask For Finder Items" (along with "Get URLs From Web Pages") give unsatisfactory results. When provided with multiple input documents, these three commands generate output in which the URLs from multiple input items are merged into a single block, which yields a single file using "Create New Word Document" as the subsequent step. A one-to-one, input file to output file result can be obtained by processing one file at a time, but this requires manual selection of each item and one-at-a-time processing. What I need is a command that accepts multiple input documents, but processes them one at a time, generating a separate output for each file processed. Is there a way for Automator to do this?

With the project all done, i'm preparing for the presentation. Managed to get my hands on a HD beamer for the night (Epason TW2000) and planning to do the presentation in HD.
That of course managed to bring up some problems. I posted a thread which i'll repost here . Sorry for the repost, i normally do not intend to do this, but since this thread is actually about the same thing, i'd like to ask the same question to you. The end version is in AfterEffects, but that actually doesn't alter the question. It's about export:
"I want to export my AE project of approx 30 min containing several HD files to a Blu Ray disc. The end goal is to project the video in HD quality using the Epson EMP-TW2000 projector. This projector is HD compatible.
To project the video I need to connect the beamer to a computer capable of playing a heavy HD file (1), OR burn the project to a BRD (2) and play it using a BRplayer.
I prefer option 2, so my question is: which would be the preferred export preset?
Project specs:
                    - 1920x1080 sq pix (16:9)
                    - 25 fps
                    - my imported video files (Prem.Pro sequences) are also 25 fps and are Progressive (!)
To export to a BRD compatible format, do i not encounter a big problem: my projectfiles are 25 fps and progressive, and I believe that the only Bluray preset dispaying 1920x1080 with 25 fps requests an INTERLACED video (I viewed the presets found on this forum, this thread)... There is also a Progr. format, BUT then you need 30 fps (29,...).
So, is there one dimension that can be changed without changing the content of the video, and if yes which one (either the interlacing or the fps).
I'm not very familiar with the whole Blu-ray thing, I hope that someone can help me out."

ACL does not correctly order the permissions when they are updated

Problem: We have identifed an issue with editing calendar permissions using the Outlook Connector. Basically the calendar ACEs are evaluated on a first match basic. Outlook Connector does not correctly order the permissions when they are updated. A brief example is below. Editing permissions via UWC works fine and will in fact fix any out of order ACE entries.
Basic calendar permission:

after adding user mab, Ace has now been re-ordered so that the everyone permissions are now before the owner permissions:

This issue is most likely related to bug #6471869 (Outlook Connector allows invites to users with restricted permissions). This has been fixed in the latest Outlook Connector 7.1_233 (aka 122018-09). I recommend logging a Sun support case to get a copy of this new release.

I don't know what OS you are using, or what application you are using to view the data about your exported files, but on Windows and using Windows Explorer the "Date Created" field relates only to the date that the exported file was created, i.e. if viewed immediately after export it will show the date created as being the same date. In order to view "Capture Date" in something like Explorer, you first have to ensure you have included the Metadata as Conrad outlined above, then you have to adjust the display properties of Explorer to show the "Date Taken" field. Here is an example, part of a folder I exported back on March 3rd, note the difference between that last two dates:

I have one report refering ws1,ws2,t1,t2 which are in user "test".
so in my qery of report i will write the query as
select a.code,b.edu,c.dept_name,d.desg_desc
from test.ws1 a,test.ws2 b,test.t1 c,test.t2 d
where a.code = b.code
and a.dept = c.dept
and a.desg = d.desg
The report is logged in by "user123" who is having select grant on all the above 4 tables.
Report runs but takes time.
But if i make the above 4 tables available in "user123" and write the query(removed user name in from clause) as
select a.code,b.edu,c.dept_name,d.desg_desc
from .ws1 a,ws2 b,.t1 c,t2 d
where a.code = b.code
and a.dept = c.dept
and a.desg = d.desg
and then report is logged in by "user123"
Report runs and takes considerably less time.
My understanding is when tables are available in current user it takes less time because it does'nt have to go to other user and search for the tables.
Is it correct or there are some other reasons for it.

If the tables are owned by a user in the same database then there should be no difference in performance.

If you don't see any messages, not have anti-malware running or the Firewall on, try installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8 (according to your profile).
Restart your Mac after the combo in installed, try the App Store.
Also... if you have an app called Little Snitch installed, that can prevent a connection to the App Store.

How does iPad choose between wifi and 3G when both are 'on'?

I have 02 and Wifi going on my iPad. I know I can use 02 out and about and I know I can use wifi at home etc.
But when I'm at home how do I make sure I'm using my wifi for data and not my cellular connection???
I've been turning my cellular to 'off' when at home, just in case, but I don't want to have the faff of turning it off and on, so it would be nice to know how the iPad chooses between wifi and 3G when both data access points are active.
Also I've had no wifi troubles at home at all. so far... The acid test will be setting it up at work as they have proxyies for everything, but obviously I don't have proxies at home. I'm not sure if the settings screen can cope with different proxies dependent upon different wifi networks... * grin *

a signal strength indicator then 'O2-UK' then the 'fan' No mention of 3G.

P 2 P connection when both are not routable

when both computers are not routable(in different LANs),say one in a lan with gateway ip 203.122.107.239, lan ip 192.168.0.2, another in a lan with gateway ip 211.30.96.201, lan ip 192.168.0.5,
they are connecting to one server and server can get there gateway ip by use Socket.getInetAddress(), but if server wants there two guys to establish a connection to tansfer a file, how can they do because they both dont have a routable ip address.

So yeah you can ether use the features of your gateway to portforward (linux -> iptables and NAT) or you can write it yourself ...
Fact is that two Clients on a lan can never start a direct connection with each other without the help of some software on the gateways. NAT only works when you start a connection to some server and the server sends packets back. Then the NAT gateway knows where to direct them. But if someone wants to connect to a machine on your local LAN how should the gateway know which one without you telling him?
That it does not work any other way shows every p2p application I've yet come across. You ether have to open up ports (forward them to the p2p machine) or be in passive mode. In passive mode you can't connect to clients which are also in passive mode.

It has been draining my mobile data I now have very high bills from my mobile carrier for high data usage. I can only manually change settings in the Network and turn cellular data on and off everytime I get home and leave the home. This is very frustrating as it wasn't a problem until the upgrade. I have spoken to a few people that this has happened to. Has anyone found this problem and does anyone have other solutions?

Viewing ink on 2 different printers on my laptop when both are connected wirelessly

I have 2 different HP printers (let's call one a 4500 and one a 6500} in different, far-off locations in my home. Both are connected wirelessly to my laptop which runs Windows 7 (64 bit). I have no problem changing from one printer to another on my laptop; each printer will work fine wirelessly. However, I would like to utilize HP's "Solution Center" software for BOTH printers on my laptop, instead of the ONE printer (the 4500) that is available to me now. Any ideas?

If you have the full feature software installed for each printer (get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page) then in Solution Center you should be able to choose between the two.

Why does iPhoto 8.1.2 work on one iMac but not another when both are the same spec both running Mavericks 10.9.1?

I have a studio of 7 iMacs all running Mavericks 10.9.1, six of the machines are able to open iPhoto 8.2.1 but for some reason after updating the seventh, iPhoto vanished completely from that machine. I reinstalled it from a copy I had saved on a HDD but it now says it's unsupported with this version of OSX. I don't want to pay the £10 + for a piece of software that is only being used to import photos from the occasional iPhone so wont be installing the new version, especially as I know 8.2.1 does work on Mavericks.
Any suggestions?

Reinstall v8 from the install disk as, at a guess, the version of the HDD is missing components.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I dont have a data plan with my iphone 3g. I have updated the version to 3.0. I have enabled Push in the settings. I only have WIFI on. My questions are,
1. I have a yahoo mail account setup now after upgrade. But any notifications are not recieved. Only when I open my email account does it download the new email. Is it because The wifi automatically switches off once the phone is not in use. Because when ever i enter the passcode and unlock only after a few seconds do I see the wifi signal.
2. Will push work properly only if I have a dataplan because the internet would be available throughout?

Just out of curiosity, what wireless security are you running?
The reason I ask is that with wireless N routers (both, your old WRT350N and the new E4200 are wireless N), the only way to get the maximum possible wireless speeds of 300Mbps (450Mbps on the 5Ghz frequency with the E4200) is when you have the security mode set to WPA2-AES.
It's part of the wireless N standard, so if your network is using any other type of security apart from WPA2-AES, it doesn't comply to the wireless N standard and hence will not see speeds of more than 54Mbps.
Also, the other wireless devices in your network, do they have wireless N adapters? The Atrix is wireless N compliant. The reason I ask this is that if any one of the other devices in your network are not wireless N compliant, they would end up slowing down your network too. Something else to think about.
Please try setting your network to WPA2-AES security and do post back with the results. Hope this helps!
