Does wifi sleep when iPad sleeps?

If you leave wifi on and you put your ipad to sleep, does wifi power down -- or does it continue to drain battery?
In other words, am I correct in assuming that if I want to cut down on battery use, I should turn wifi off every time I put the pad to sleep?
(I've got the iPad 3G, but use it in airplane mode with wifi turned on... Unless I put it to sleep in which case I turn wifi off... Am I doing all of this unnecessarily?)

I have the 3G ipad but only use wifi, haven't activated a data plan. I notice that my ipad handles wifi unlike any of my other devices. They, imac, MB Pro ipod touch, iphone, drop their wifi when in sleep but the ipad never drops it. I check this by going into Airport utility on my mac, I use an Airport Extreme base station that all my devices connect to by wifi. Airport Utility has an Advanced section that shows all wireless devices connected to the network and their signal strength, noise and transmission rate. My ipad is always showing as connected, asleep or not. The other devices will drop out of the displayed graph when they go into sleep but not the ipad. So however wifi is implemented on the ipad it's very different from all the other devices. This may be one reason why I've never had the issue of the ipad losing its wifi when coming out of sleep. Actually the only wifi problem I've ever had is that every now and then the wifi antenna symbol will completely disappear triggering an alert that says connecting for a few seconds when the antenna reappears and the connection is made again. Weird but it happens very infrequently.

  • How do enter my wifi password when IPad has the old saved password on it?

How do I change my wireless password when the old password is stored for the wireless connection?

Similar issue but forget this network does not reset my problem. My IT staff came in to my office to check my network login. Asked if they could use my computer, I was in the middle of a big chunk of statistical code and said no. Asked if they could use my Ipad. Not thinking I said sure, they logged in with their credentials on the new network, now even if I hit forget and wait a half hour, as soon as I select that network it finds their old login and connects. How do I reset this login and password to ME?

  • Does your Wifi drop when your iPad mini went into sleep mode after upgrading to iOS 7?

Dear iPad mini users, to those who have upgraded to iOS 7 like I did, do you experienced WiFi drop when your iPad is in sleeping mode? I noticed this problem only few days after upgrading my iOS. Initially I don't think there is such issue. After your iPad mini recover fom sleep mode, then it will automatically connect to WiFi again. My point is it no longer connected to WiFi in sleeping mode and so could not keep me up-to-date with my mail if I am on WiFi.
Do share your view and if there is a solution, do share with me please. I have tried almost all solutions available online but no no avail. At the moment, I am activating my 3G network so that when mail came in, my iPad will notify me even during its sleeping mode but this is getting expensive considering I am using the 3G 24 hours every day now.

I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.

  • IPad WiFi/3G dropping WiFi connection when sleeping

Just recently, my IPad just started dropping it's wifi connection when it goes ton sleep, and it isn't automatically reconnecting. This is my home network, and previously it did reconnect on wake. I have open preferences and manually reconnect every time I wake the iPad.

*The wifi problems are specific to certain types of routers!!!*
Example: My Pad works like a champ at work. The router there is an old Linksys G.
It works like crap at home. At home I have a newer Belkin N/G.
That's why some people have problems and some don't: It depends on the router.
So...My question is: What is the best router for an iPad?
I'm willing to go out an buy it; I just want someone to tell me the best one!!
Is it really necessary to spam so many threads with this?

  • Why ipad does not sleep/keep full charge?

Why after My ipad has a full charge and later when I go check it appear my ipad does not sleep as I have hardly any charge left on my ipad?

What have you got open in the background e.g. email fetching, wifi and/or 3G on, location services etc ? There are tips on this page for maximising the battery life between charges : http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html

  • FaceTime calls not received when iPad sleep

FaceTime does not wake my iPad when it rings.  The ringer works fine when I'm using the iPad and it's awake.  It just seems to me that I shouldn't have to call/text a person to ask them to make sure their iPad is awake so they're able to receive my call.  Shouldn't the call just go through to the other iPad similar to a cell phone?  I, my brothers and best friend all recently purchased iPad's and we all have the same issue.
Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

If the iPad is sleeping, Wi-Fi is switch off to save battery per designed. To have Wi-Fi on while the iPad is asleep, connect to the wall power supply.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • HT4199 What does it mean when I click on my wifi name and the bars come up but the network keeps thinking and the ipad says safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet. ?

What does it mean when I click on my wifi name and it show I'm on my wifi, but the network keeps thinking and the ipad says, Safari cannot open this page because it is not connected to the internet. ?

When you click on the WiFi network name, have you also provided the password for accessing the network?  You should get a dialogue box asking you for the security information the first time you connect.
If you are not able to connect, you might want to go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
Then go back to Settings > WiFi and select your network name again and make sure the security information is now entered correctly.
If you still cannot connect, power down the router, wait a few minutes, power up the router, with the iPad powered down the whole time, and after the router has had several minutes to stabilize power up the iPad.  See if it now connects correctly.

  • I have an Ipad 2. My wife has an Ipad mini. When we connect to Itunes it installs all the apps from one Ipad on to the other. I unchecked the box to automatically update apps, but Itunes still does so. How do I prevent Itunes from intalling apps?

I have an Ipad 2. My wife has an Ipad mini. When we plug in to Itunes (at different times) it synchs the apps from one Ipad on to the other. We don't want this. I have uncheked the box for Automatically synch apps, but it still does this.
How do I get Itues to see each Ipad as a separate item, and not try to keep them "equal" as far as apps installed?

Remove the apps from iTunes with your device connected. You can basically deselect the apps that you don't want on each device. We have three IOS devices on one AppleID and they don't all have the same apps.

  • X120e does not sleep when lid closed

I found another similar post, however it was resolved by the individual reinstalling the operating system.
My issue is more complicated. I have made sure everything is up to date, all the settings that tell the system to sleep when the lid is closed are turned on. I have even turned those settings off off, just so I could turn them back on to make sure there wasn't something quirky about it.
I have tried restoring the system to factory settings using the recovery partition, as well as discs burned from the program that came with the computer. I have tried clean install from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 discs.
The unit still does not sleep. I don't ever remembering it being able to. I once closed the display thinking it would sleep (power was plugged in). Woke up the next day, went to work for 8 hours, came back and felt that the system was really hot. Opened the lid and the screen was exactly as I had left it the day before.
When I first got the system in 2012, the screen did not work, so I actually had to send it to Atlanta, GA for repairs. It came back quickly, and it still did not work, so I actually sent it back to Atlanta, GA's repair center a second time in the same week. It came back working and I left it alone. I never tested the sleep/wake because I always just turned the system off when I was done with it, but now I am back in school and this little computer comes in handy, but I don't want to turn off the system manually going from class to class when I need to pack it away in my bag.
Could there be a hardware issue? Something inside not connected? This laptop works perfectly EXCEPT for the fact that it will not sleep when the lid is closed. It is out of warranty but had I known this was an issue while it was still under warranty, I would have inquired. This unit is in pretty fantastic shape, looks brand new too. No damage, never been dropped, and only ever handled by me (never loaned out).
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks for the reply, gat0gelat0.
Yes, those settings were the first things I checked. I also tried changing it to "Do nothing", then changing back to the sleeping option. It still does nothing when I close the lid.
I would like the functionality of it going to sleep when I close the lid for the convenience, like when class ends, I have to rush to my next class, I just want to close the lid, put it in my bag and run to the next class. Keyboard shortcuts like Fn-F4 work, but this laptop should have the functionality I am describing, and I want to figure out why it isn't working and how to fix it.
I suspect there is an issue with whatever is used hardware wise to sleep the machine. Either it's not being triggered, or it's not there, or it's broken. I've tried running a magnet around the bezel of the LCD screen as well as around the palm rest bezel and there is no activity as I've read that many laptops trigger sleep by interaction by a magnet. Still nothing.

  • Wifi disconnects when waking from sleep mode; running Mountain Lion

Had this same issue with Lion as well,, wifi disconnects when waking from sleep mode,,,any ideas how to fix this pesky issue?

    Hi Sky,
This has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.
