Does windows or mac make a difference in this scenario?

I work for a small educational institution planning to produce some of its own material into print format. The final products have the following characteristics:
Either small A5 booklets (staple on the spine) or thicker books (perfect/glue bound down the spine)
Either printed in the office (for small batches) or sent to a professional printer (+ binding for large batches)
Content language range from English to Spanish to Chinese.
Content format is mainly bw text (like a novel), with the occasional tables and bw graphics (made by outside graphic designers)
I'm conversant with computers, but have no experience with professional desktop publishing. Here are a few questions in my mind:
Do we really need to invest in InDesign? Our requirement seems to be achievable using Microsoft Word (as it is now) - except I don't know how well Word interacts with printers for large batch printing.
How different would InDesign be on Windows and Mac? Obviously the interface may be different given the characteristics of the OS, but will there be substantial advantage of one OS to another in the professional printing world?
Thanks in advance if you have any advice/opinion/thoughts!
tim

Understanding that I do work for Adobe (and have for over twenty years) and that I obviously have a vested interest in people buying copies of InDesign, let me take as honest a stab at answering your two major questions:
(1)     If you have no real experience with professional desktop publishing, you will find a fairly steep learning curve for InDesign and all of its features. It is not a word processor and some things which may be fairly simple to do if you are fairly good with Microsoft Word may seem very difficult in InDesign. Not that they can't be done, but there is more discipline and factors involved in using this type of software. It is oriented towards serving the needs of those who need to design and execute graphically-rich content for professional publication. Yes, you can type a simple "memo" (remember what those were?) in InDesign, but the overhead of doing so especially if you really aren't at all familiar with this type of software can be quite high. At the same time, you could conceivably use Microsoft Word to do some fairly sophisticated publications, but doing so not only tests the limits of that software, but also your patience and willingness to hack around software limitations. In terms of what you describe as large batch printing, my advice would be the same for both Microsoft Word and InDesign. Create a PDF file from the document and then print the resultant PDF file from either Adobe Reader or Acrobat. If you are going to a commercial printer, that printer will probably appreciate a PDF file (fonts embedded of course) as opposed to a bunch of source files, whether they be Word or InDesign.
(2)     Assuming that you use either OpenType (either TrueType or Adobe Type 1 - CFF flavoured) or TrueType fonts for the document, Windows or Macintosh is fairly irrelevant in terms of how InDesign works, including the vast majority of its user interface. Contrary to what many Macintosh fanboys would have you believe, InDesign (and for that matter, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and other Adobe Creative Suite applications) work at least as well under Windows as on a Macintosh and you can go from one platform to the other without having to learn anything really new. Once the printer has your PDF file, it doesn't make a bit of a difference what platform InDesign was run on!
In conclusion, you actually seem fairly satisfied with your current Word-based workflow and your documents are really not graphically-intensive. Until such time as you have such needs and the time to learn InDesign, you might be best off staying with Word. For printing from either Word or InDesign, I most strongly recommend that you create a PDF file and print from that. The PDF file should be in logical page order, single copy. Any imposition or booklet-making should be done either in Acrobat/Reader or at the print device itself.

  • Does a THX Cert make the difference on a 65" Panasonic Plasma?

We're looking to replace a 65" tv in our family/moive watching room.  After a ton of back and forth, we've settled on a Panasonic plasma...either the S1 or V10.  Now, neither are stocked in my Best Buy for me to compare at this size.  I don't care about the Internet options on the V10.  The only difference we care about would be "if" the THX Cert actually makes a difference when watching Blu-Ray.  And if it does, does that really justify an additional $1400 in price.  It's not the $ is not objsect, but this is our movie watching room, we don't plan on replacing it for at least another 5+ years and we just want the best picture we can get.  (Oh, and for watching football too!!!)
If anoyone has seen both or can guide me either way I'd greatly appreciate it!!!
    Thanks,
    Kear

Hey Kear! good question- the THX certification is something that Panasonic pays to have on that, the big the the v10 has that the s1 does not is "thx mode", its a picture setting that has more natural colors than "vivid", "cinema", or any other standerd setting. honostly, if the other features do not concern you, i would recommend gettin the s1 and having it calibrated by geek squad- a calibration is basically a reset of all the color setting and they actually cusmotize it to the room it is in, this will give you a better picture than you would get out of THX mode and it will add a few lears to the life of the tv, also the price just dropped to $199 for the calibration! hope this helps!

  • Does using HDMI cables make a difference?

For this level of video quality, does it make a difference to use HDMI vs. just RCA?

For this level of video quality, does it make a
difference to use HDMI vs. just RCA?
The HDMI connection passes digital signals; the RCA (component) one passes analog signals. In theory, transferring the signals in the digital domain should yield higher quality video, all other things being equal.
This is because binary digital signals have only two values, on or off, while analog ones have a continuous range of them. Thus, digital transmissions are immune to signal degradations small compared to the 'all the way on' or 'all the way off' signal range, while analog ones are directly affected by them.
However, because HDMI is a multi-core connection (several conductors are in the cable), & it is desirable to make the cables thin, flexible, & easy to handle, it is more difficult & expensive to manufacture multi-core cables with these & the appropriate electrical characteristics compared to a set of conventional (single-core) cables intended for transmitting individual analog video components.
Since the electrical characteristics of the cores become increasingly important for passing high quality signals with increasing cable lengths, this generally isn't a concern for short cable runs like most people would use between Apple TV's & other HDMI devices co-located in one cabinet, but is a concern if (for example) the Apple TV must be connected by a long cable to a remote display across the room.
So basically, go with HDMI (or DVI) for short cable runs. For longer ones, consider both. Distance, cost, & cable space considerations will generally interact to determine which is best for you.

  • In large PDF files my cursor moves around the page at warp speed. It does not seem to make any difference if I slow it down with Sys Prefs. This is not only in preview but also other programs to open PDFs.

In large PDF files the cursor moves at warp speed with a mind of it's own, I've tried slowing it down in Sys Pref with no luck. On small files cursor action is normal. This happens in Safari, Preview and other programs that use PDF files. Sorry to say this does not seem to be a new problem with 7.# I've had it with prvevious versions of operating system Right now I'm using a Apple wireless mouse and key board. Using the USB keyboard and mouse the same problem does not go away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Does windows and mac run continuously using parallel, or is there some way to stop xp from running if you are not using it?

I would like to run a few windows programs but I dont want the mac side to suffer when i am not using the windows os.  Is there some way to shutdown the windows part when you are not using?

If you are running MS Windows in Parallels or Fusion or any other virtualization  software  you can shut it down while the machine is operating and still run OS X. There is no trick, you shut down MS Windows just like you would with any other MS Windows machine. That is one of the main advantages of virtualizaiton software, the ability to run both environments simultaneously if you want. If you don't want to run Windows then simply don't start the virtualizaiton software or if it's already running quit it like you do any app on a Mac.

  • Does Cas Latency really make a difference?

I have a MSI K8N Neo2 setup (AMD64 3500) and I am inquiring if memory latency effects are really noticible or not during heavy gaming or creating home movies for DVD's.  Currently, I have two sticks of Corsair Value Select 512MB DDR PC-3200 (VS512MB400).  It has a Cas latency of 2.5.  Is there any good noticible performance reason, I should trade up and buy some better performing memory.  If so, does anyone have a tried and true favorite with the K8N Neo2?  Any thoughts?  I have never overclocked, I just run at stock speeds.  Perhaps the performance gain is not worth the money?
    I also have:
    eVGA geforce 6800NU
2- 200 GB Seagate IDE barracuda
    Sony DVD burner

Spread Spectrum Modulation was invented to reduce interferences of high order
harmonics of the bus frequency. The theory is that, because every wave form
generates higher order harmonic waves or Obertoene, accumulation of the latter
can result in interference with the original signal.
One way to avoid this problem is to subject the base frequency to a slow (ca 100,000 clock cycles) modulation,
meaning that the FSB varies between e.g. + and - 1% of the nominal value.
In older boards, usually two different settings were available,
either centered around the nominal value or set with the nominal frequency as the maximum (low modulation).
Most current boards employ the centered modulation.
This is, at least, the official version of Spread Spectrum Modulation.
In reality, there are different reasons for its implementation.
With increasing operating frequency, electronic components emit electromagnetic interference signals (EMI).
EMI, on the other hand can cause interferences with other devices and is,
therefore, subject to regulation by the FCC which limits the signal amplitude according to its guidelines.
Any device exceeding the maximum allowable signal strength will not gain
approval by the FCC and can, therefore, not be marketed.
In order to understand the reason for SSM, it is necessary to know how the FCC
    tests EMI.
Basically, the testing device is a radio receiver and the testing is done by sweeping
its receiving frequency through the frequency range of interest and measuring the
interference with the video and audio signals. The bandwidth sensitivity of the
measuring device is in the order of about 1 MHz.
If the operating frequency is modulated to spread over a bandwidth of typically
4-5 MHz, the same will happen to the EMI spectrum and,
instead of showing a sharp peak, the spectrum will be spread to a more or less
    Gaussian bell shape.
In this case, the amplitude will be, of course, substantially smaller, that is,
in the order of 1/3 - ¼ of the original peak.
The energy, however, will be the same. On the other hand,
the measuring instrument with its bandwidth limited to only 1/4 of the spread will,
consequently, only see 1/3 to ¼ of the EMI.
Therefore, the system will obtain FCC approval even if it exceeds the guidelines.
    Recommended Settings
If running at stock setting, enabling Spread Spectrum Modulation (SSM)
may reduce EMI, and cause less interference with wireles communication devices.
Under all conditions, enabling SSM may cause a system to crash.
This is especially true for overclocking, simply because with the high multiplier values employed now, even a 0.5% modulation up and down can cause
differences up to as much as 10 MHz clock speed within one modulation cycle.
In other words, if the CPU is already operating at its limit, increasing the clock
speed by another 10 MHz may be fatal.
Therefore, for any overclocking, SSM should be turned off.
Another side effect of SSM is that it can interfere with the clock generator.
This means that, instead of merely initializing SSM, it is possible to enable FSB settings that were never supported by the manufacturer.
Examples are the Tyan Trinity 400 where disabling SSE results in an actual bus
speed of 90 MHz instead of the selected 117 MHz or the MSI 6309 where FSB settings of up to 200 MHz become available.
The reason is that activating SSM can cancel out the FSB setting since there
can be a pin address overlap on the clock generator chip.
    (from lostcircuits.com)
Lets say your CPU is putting out EMI , its all concentrated on one "channel/frequency" on the spectrum.
What spread spectrum does is broaden that out to multiple channels/frequencies so it isn't as "potent" or interupting.

    This is interesting.
Fsb spread spectrum enabled can cause internet dropouts.

  • Windows or Mac ? How to check this out ??

    HI,
I just restored for the third time my new IPod. I use a G4 and my Ipod was always ejecting itself without me doing anything. I phoned the Apple people and they told me it was because my Ipod was set up for Windows.
Now the question is: How can I checked if it is now set up for my Mac without having to restore it again ??? I have a 30GB fifth generation color IPod.
    Thanks

On your iPod, go to Settings>About. If you see a serial number then it's Mac formatted. "iPod: How to determine your iPod's disk format" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61672

Posting to YouTube and providing a URL link might be the most universal method of playback although quality may be on the weak side.

WMV is a proprietary compression format. You will either have to purchase the authorized QT components from Flip4Mac or purchase a separate open source converter application like Visual Hub.
i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu?
Any you won't even if you purchase and install the QT component -- iMovie '08 only exports to QT compression formats.
do i need to buy quicktime pro?
It wouldn't help. Getting QT Pro only unlocks editing and conversion features. It does not add any additional codecs which don't already have installed.
if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't.
As indicated above, QT Pro allows you to convert to/from any compression formats for which you have working import/export QT components. This can already be be done using GarageBand and iMovie. GarageBand allows you to access any installed QT import/export component while iMovie '08 restricts you to Apple QT components. In addition, QT Pro allows you to create player displays with multiple audio/video tracks, gives you ability to layer graphic elements (e.g, create watermarks, create pictures-within-pictures, etc,), allow the viewer to switch between alternate audio and/or video tracks, and may other things.
ADDED: If you really want to see what QT Pro can do, check out QTKirk's examples on his DotMac account.

  • I've tried every online tutorial for timer.delay + experimented... how to make it work in this sitch

    Hey,
I've read literally every single timer.delay tutorial I could find online, on youtube, the official documentation, tons of posts on this forum, etc. What I am trying to say is I looked everywhere before posting for help.
I have a timer running. It runs throughout the game. I need to modify the speed of that timer when a player either hits a certain second(won't work, because the timer is already running) or when someone gets a certain score(can't get it to work, because timer is running).... so my question is how do I get timer.delay to work when the timer is running throughout the entire game. I tried to control the delay by when someone gets a point, but that didn't work either. I am using a trace statement so I see the seconds and the timer speed. the code looks something like
    randomvariable = new Timer(2000,8);
    timer.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, loop);
    timer.start();
    function loop
    // my looping code here
What I posted is psuedo code.
Any ideas on how to make the timer go faster without delay, since I can't get delay to work under the circumstances I explained? Or is there a work around that I don't know about? I will try to give back to the forums by answering other questions. Oh, I am running this on the timeline, not in a .as file. Thanks so much for your help!

That's what I thought. I thought if I set a delay inside the function or in an if statement for the var that  prints out  the timer decrease that it would work. It doesn't. I'm using Adobe AIR for IOS, but I doubt that makes a difference in this case. I write timer.delay=500; that should make the timer go at 500 milliseconds. My trace shows the amount of milliseconds didn't change throughout the application. It is quite bothersome, since everything else works and every guide and the docs say what I am doing should work. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Ryan Satterfield

I am downloading an album and I don't know which format to choose.  Flac, apple lossless, or high quality mp3.  I want to play it in itunes, on my iphone and i have a pc running windows 7.  Does that make a difference?

Go with Apple Lossless.  It will play readily in iTunes vs. FLAC.  You can convert it later to mp3 if you wish but you cannot convert mp3 to ALE or FLAC and get back the quality that was lost.  You can also convert ALE to FLAC if you need to.

  • What is the best I7 Intel processor to get on the Macbook Pro 15"?  Are these processors 2nd generation processors?  Does it matter?  Should I wait until - when? - for 2nd generation processors to be used?  Does the 2.5 Mh processor make a difference?

I'm about to order a MacBook Pro 15".  I wonder if the I7 processors are 2nd generation or if it matters.  Also, is there significant benefit to getting the 2.4 or 2.5 Ghz processor over the 2.2?  I'm not a gamer or graphics manipulator, but I do look at (not edit) a lot of video for my work, and I typically multi-task, having many applications and internet windows open at once. Also, I will be running Windows for work access and applications.  Of course, I have little idea what makes a difference in my use experience, except I plan to get max RAM and probably the fastest hard drive.  Any advice welcome.

    Steve,
I appreciate your focus on assistance, and thank you for your help.  Couple of follow up questions:  What you said about the new specs suggests that the MacBook Pro line has recently been upgraded with, what, the 2nd gen Intel chips, some other incremental improvements?  So maybe it has paid off to crawl along with my old mac to get the latest tech.  For these kinds of upgrades, I guess Apple doesn't advertise that they have the latest chips (I've seen PC ads touting the 2nd gen chips, and checked out the Intel site, so that's how I became aware) and all?
I'm planning to enjoy this computer for quite some years.  Of course I will get the 3 yr extended warranty.  And I was planning to get the hi res antiglare screen: that seems to be the best of the options.  It looks like one can now get a faster 750 Gb fast drive, instead of having to settle for 500 in the faster version.  The cost does add up, but my feeling was to go for broke and get the best machine I can.  So does getting the faster cpu and hd and max ram (perhaps buying third party) and all make sense, assuming I can afford it when I add everything up, or is it like a moderately good guitar player getting a top of the line guitar he can't really play well enough to warrant it?  (I remember a story about a student under Segovia arriving with a very very expensive guitar when he was still early in the learning process; it may be apocryphal, but story goes that Segovia took the guitar from the student and smashed it to smithereens.  I assume that was not just because the student mistook the instrument for skill in playing it, but perhaps also because he would be too careful with such an expensive instrument, and fail to master it.  Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I could be mislead by seeking the "best barn burner on the block" when what I need is what will work fine for my purposes.) So I think your original response was probably right on in terms of what will actually be of use to me.
    Thanks again,
    David

    the same situation is happening in “G and N mode 2.4Ghz”, "Only N mode 2.4Ghz" , "G and N mode 5Ghz" and "Only N mode 5Ghz".
My point is - get rid of "N" and see if that makes a difference. All of those modes will default to N.
Thus you need to try "B/G" or "G" only. My theory is that there is an incompatibility somewhere within the way the PC operates on N and the way the Mac operates on N.
In terms of testing... well.... I think that Apple has opened up a few more angles than can be reasonably managed in recent times. There is now a heck of a lot to test. Thus the quality of some components is not as high as it could be. The biggest Leopard disappointment to me is that [some core OS operations actually went backwards|http://www.rixstep.com/2/2/20080606,00.shtml] compared to Tiger (but that is not the point of this thread!). I admire the innovation, and the strength of the platform - but they do need to make sure that it is all integrating and not becoming a mess.
That is part of the reason that they are taking a breath with Snow Leopard IMO. I hope.
That said, I have assisted with a few wireless problems on this forum, and at least half have turned out to be caused by environmental factors rather than specific code flaws.
