Does windows' system restore take a snapshot of FF and am i able to role back to my old bookmarks that way?

does windows vista's system restore take a snapshot of FF that will allow me to role back to my old bookmarks?
thank you

i created a JSON file before the FF move. JSON files i tried to restore bookmarks from were from dates while i had the folder, yet they did not help it appear in any bookmarks menu or on any taskbar.
six months of bookmarks were in three folders put to a FF taskbar, two folders made it... one named bookmarks did not. it might be a flaw within firefox.

  • 1.Backup to External drive 2. CoverArt lost after Windows system restore

I recently spent many hours searching for and applying cover art for my music which was mostly ripped before cover art was readily available.
Because of this investment, I want to be sure my library is fully backed up. I want to use space on an external drive, rather than DVD's.
I noticed as I added art, iTunes started acting sluggish. I thought it might be because of the new version or a recent Windows Vista update. So I decided to run system restore. I was appalled to discover that restore wiped out the art I had added. So I reversed the restore and the cover art returned. It became clear to me that the art must be stored in some other way than in the actual music file. I've searched the forum and found others who had problems with system restore, but no explanation of exactly what I should do if I want to proceed with a system restore. I use system restore several times a year and I have never lost anything in iTunes before I started adding cover art. I also never had a problem with sluggishness til I added a bunch of cover art.
My library is large at 3000 items.
Is there a way to compact or optimize the database to improve responsiveness?
Is there a way to backup to an external drive? Is it just a file copy and export library file?
If I export the library as an xml file before I do a system restore, can I then replace it after the restore and protect my cover art.

To be completely sure what you're doing please take a look at your iTunes Folder and see what Vista stores inside it. To find it, go to Start>Computer>Hard Disk C>Users>Your Name>Music>iTunes>.......
Please note there is an artwork folder PLUS a music folder!
My guess is that your system restore point pre-dated the time you added artwork to your iTunes files. (Celebrate that system restore still works for you--I have not been able to successfully restore for over a year now--Norton Internet Security causes system restore failures for many Windows users! I've tried to do this using Windows XP and Vista--and I can never successfully restore anymore.)
To fully backup your library, just copy the entire iTunes folder to another source--second hard drive, USB drive, or burn it to a CD or DVD, etc.
If you're experiencing "sluggishness" it may be due to the amount of RAM on your system. iTunes needs a great deal of RAM to run smoothly. You can choose to: increase the RAM on your system, OR, turn off cover flow/album view and see if things run more smoothly.

  • Windows "system restore" equivalent for iMac

After some reading, it is my understanding that the most equivalent of a windows "system restore" for the Mac would be via a 3rd party application such as SuperDuper. Am I correct? I believe I understand that "restoring" the system with Time Machine to a specific date/time requires utilizing the install disk, selecting the Time Machine volume and then picking the "snapshot" you want.
I'm a new Mac user after 20 years with PC's. Please forgive my elementary knowledge of MacIntosh.

    wamcgeemd,
It is pretty common knowledge that the Windows "registry" is an absolute nightmare, where the installation of even (otherwise) innocuous software can cause serious conflicts that can cripple a Windows installation. Even during updates to Windows itself, a file in the registry might be written improperly or incompletely (for example), and the results could be disastrous. It is for this reason that Windows automatically creates "restore points" before updates. The problem has (historically) been prevalent enough to make this necessary. In short, a Windows user's ability to "roll back" to an earlier state exists simply because it is frequently needed.
This is not the case in OS X, which contains nothing even remotely like the "registry." While there have been (perhaps) a handful of updates to OS X- in all its variations- that have "broken" specific functionalities, almost all of these incidents have been cases where incompatibilities have occurred with the hardware or firmware of third-party peripherals. If the problem originated with the update itself, a fix has always been forthcoming very quickly from Apple. In all other cases, the fix has been new firmware from the device manufacturer. Of course, there have also been a few cases of third-party software being "broken" by a given update to OS X. I should stress here that all of these above occurrences have been very, very few and far between.
By far, the most common problem with updates is that they have the potential to cause disk errors. It is not that the update, itself, causes problems, but that the nature of an OS update is such that it can expose weaknesses in the file system. When the file system fails, a disk error occurs and data is often lost. Since the data being handled at the time of the disk error is all critical system data, a disk error like this will most likely cripple the OS.
Since a disk error of this nature necessitates a complete erasure of the hard drive in order to be properly fixed, what is required is not a "roll back," but a completely new installation on a newly formatted volume.
So, we have two potential cases: 1) Something in one's environment gets "broken" by an update, and 2) One encounters a disk error during an update. It is true that in case #1 above, some ability to "roll back" would be helpful. This functionality does exist with Time Machine, although it may not be as quick or simple as using a Windows "restore point." On the other hand, this type of problem is vanishingly rare (I have never encountered it). In case #2 above, a "roll back" wouldn't work or be desired, even if it existed.
The moral to all this is that restore points and "roll back" make sense for Windows, and Time Machine makes sense for OS X.

  • Display shuts down when doing a system restore

    Windows 7
Display shuts off when trying to do a system restore.
When doing a system restore the display seems to shut off. I have tried many times, sometimes it stops at 3%, sometimes at 14% and sometimes before I can even start it. I have attached a second monitor and it goes off at the same time.
I can no longer boot to windows since it started a system restore.
I have tried to boot from a CD and also get a black screen. All lights on the keyboard are still on. It is like it goes into powersave mode. Light on HD is solid, doesn't make any noise.
I am so frustrated! There was no power or display issues before I started. I was simply going to do a clean restore.

Yes, if you have the music folder you still have your song files....the most important!
But I would hate to lose my ratings and playlists.
If you want your ratings and playlists from the ipod, itunes will NOT do it. You would have to download & install some other 3rd-party ipod manager. Such as mentioned here:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/P2
My advice for the future is to make frequent backups of the iTunes Library.itl file. About once a week, I put a copy on a USB stick Mor often if I've done lots of edits/added content. And ALWAYS before an itunes upgrade.

  • I have Firefox 17.0.1, by doing a system restore, I lost all my major default search engines, google, yahoo, bing, etc.; can't get them back

Firefox was working fine until I did a system restore to get rid of a DLL initialization failed error; it went back 20 days; an older version of firefox was there and it wouldn't update, then I noticed all my major search engines and defaults were gone, including google, yahoo, bing, etc. Some of the minor search engines were there. I couldn't even add them manually.
I tried using system restore again, going back like yesterday; it doesn't work. The files or something is wrong. How can I fix this to get my major search engines back, or being able to add them. In manage search engines there is a restore default box exists but it doesn't work.
I have windows xp professional. Please help, this is driving me crazy. I also tried typing a command in the run in the start menue to go into a safe mode and click on restore defaults. It also didn't work, no safe mode.

    Clarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure.

  • Recently upgraded to new version of Firefox and after a Windows System Restore was performed today Firefox is no longer accessable (clicking Firefox icon results in nothing) what can I do?

After System Restore Mozilla Firefox icon is still on the bottom of screen but now when I click on the icon the Firefox browser does not open. I have a number of bookmarks saved that I would perfer not to lose - is there anyway I can restore Firefox without losing bookmarks?

Using System restore can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored, so be careful with doing a System Restore.
Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Trying to change ownership of my old iPod. The advice here is to go to "Devices">"Summary">"Restore", but I find "Devices" does not offer "Restore" but only "Sync", "Transfer", "Backup", and a greyed "Restore from backup."

What I don't understand is that your iTunes looks different from mine--just a little bit. You have 3 circles, red, yellow, and green, in the upper right end of the top bar. INstead I have a square that is half gray. When I click it, I get a menu very similar to the menu under "File."
The only place I see an entry for "Devices" is under "File," but it only gives the 4 options I mentioned before (see below). There is no "Summary."
Here's another screen shot after I added an album to music. Now all the choices under "Devices" are grayed.

Original problem is that I cannot connect to any wifi system anymore - have tried resetting network settings but did not work.

Try 1 step at a time and do a backup, if no joy then do the next step:
    1. Switching off your anti-virus and firewall.
    2. Computer iTunes menu > Edit > Preferences... > Devices > delete your backup

sure pretty simple.  make a backup of your current settings

then restore device from old backup you need pics off of
    then import pics to computer

you may need to save pics to camera roll first
then restore the new backup and sync pics back to phone via itunes

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Your question really belongs in the AppleWorks community/forum.
You can turn on fonts in actual type in the AppleWorks preferences.

Basics from the manual are restrt, reset, restore.
Have you tried each of these?

  • Lost bookmarks and frequently visited tabs after doing a system restore. Easy help? Not a computer whiz.

Last night I tried to download a file converter from IQmango. I was nervous because it was taking so long, so I discontinued it. Not soon enough. AVG toolbar captured my computer and so did a IQmango, which would not let me access my Firefox homepage. Instead of the little fox, I got this green IQmango icon. I did a system restore in frustration of not being able to rid my computer of these hijackers, and in the process, lost my bookmarks and my tabs of recently visited places. Can someone speak to me in plain English and tell me how to get them back. If I can't, it is okay. Just tell me I can't. I tried updating Firefox browser before the restore, and so maybe that is what did it. I've never had this happen before. I have Windows Vista. Windows 6.1 OS, if that helps. If you can give me a 1. you click this; 2. you click that, etc. I would appreciate it. This all started because Windows DVD maker doesn't take an MP3 file!!! Helloooooo Windows!

    (1) Bookmarks
If you go to the bookmark restore menu, are any recent dates listed? You can check that using the steps in this article: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
    (2) Frequently visited tabs
    (A) Do you mean the thumbnails on your "new tab" page? These will be repopulated by your history. But if you had pinned sites here, you might not be able to recover those.
    (B) Do you mean tabs that you kept open from day to day by restoring your previous session where you left off? That data is fragile and might not be recoverable.
Step 1 would be to salvage your sessionstore files and make backup copies before exiting Firefox or making any other changes.
Open your active Firefox profile folder (personal settings folder) using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files that start with sessionstore to a safe location such as your documents folder.
Does the sessionstore.bak file look as though it has a timestamp of your last good session, or something later or much earlier?
