Does Word for Mac 2011 have an "Overtype" option

I have MS Word for Mac 2011, and I want to be able to use Overtype when dealing with my Word documents but  Word for Mac 2011 does not seem to have any option for Overtype.  I have seen in on-line forums solutions for the problem in  Word
2010 and 2013  but no mention of Word for Mac 2011 solutions.   My version of Word does not have an "Options" option under "File", which is the solution to enabling "overtype" put forth for 2010 & 2013 versions.
Is it possible that there is no way to enable "overtype" in Word for Mac 2011?

To my knowledge, Apple does not supply MacBook Pros with MS Word installed.
Pls specify exactly what app and what version you are talking about. If it is really MS Word, then it's possible it wasn't correctly installed. You should re-install MS Office, and then update it, if applicable.

  • Flow text in Word for Mac 2011 works from page 1 to page 2, but not from page 2 to page 1. Does anyone know a fix for this, please?

Does anyone know how to get text to flow from page 2 to page 1 in Word for Mac 2011, please?
To try it, create a fair size text box on page 2 and fill it right up with text.
Next, reduce the text box size so that the text box is over-full.
Then Flow this overflow into a new text box on page 1.
What appears also disappears, especially if you try to print.

With some advice, I was able to solve my problem by opening Word and then Force Quit Word.  When I re-opened Word, it had returned to normal.
Note: I had already tried the expedient of restarting my computer without solving my Word problem.  But Force Quit did the job.

  • Can I have separate pages (using Microsoft word for mac 2011) utilizing a new iMac and a second monitor?

Hardware - new iMac 21.7, Software Mirosoft word for Mac 2011.
I presently adjust the text to allow two pages on my iMac monitor.
If I add a second monitor can I have two different pages on it so I can
see four consecutive pages (e.g. pages 31 and 32 on the iMac and pages
33 and 34 on the second monitor)?  I am sure I can move items like
pictures from one monitor to the other, but will the word processing
software indicated above work like I would like it to?

why would one of the pages be split?
Because you'd stretch the Word window across both displays and the screen bezels would be larger than the page split. The page spacer in Word is much smaller than any bezel I've seen, so the two bezels would cause it to break up a page somewhere.

  • Word for mac 2011 keyboard commands hang when network disk mounted

After much trial and error, I have found that, for my system, at least, MS Word for Mac 2011 hangs on keyboard commands when a network disk is mounted on my desktop.
Just wanted to alert all who get the beach ball when use keyboard commands in MS Word.
Symptom was that Cmd-C would take 8-13 seconds or so to copy 1 word, versus immediate when using menu commands. Same with Cmd-V paste. Also, opening a document took much longer.
Once I ejected network disk, problem disappeared.
Hopefully this will save someone else the time I spent tracking down the issue. I'd still love to know the root problem, though, as I prefer to have a remoe disk mounted on desktop while I work, and now I can't.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper (v 2.8). Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
The effects of having actually used MacKeeper to do anything are a completely different matter. The fastest way to take an exquisitely designed and painstakingly engineered Mac and make it run like a steaming pile of dung is to install and use such ill-conceived "cleaning" or "security" products. This is just one example of a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing damage that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

  • Swapping between windows in Word for Mac 2011?

I've just installed Word for Mac 2011 on my new Mac Mini, and somehow the Command+` keyboard shortcut for switching between open Word windows is not working anymore. I've tried to find the answer online, but everyone states to use Command+`, which is exactly what's not working anymore for me. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Thanks for the response. I guess my request wasn't clear: what I was trying to indicate is that the very thing you are suggesting is not working. One important note though is: you mention Command + Tilde, which would mean the key sequence would have to be Command/Shift/Tilde-key, and it appears that the support page you linked indicates that also. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work either in my Word app (it does work with other apps, so either Command + ` (accent grave) and Command + Shift + ~ works to switch between windows.  On all of the Macs that I have owned so far, the keyboard shortcut to switch between windows in the open app is Command + ` (accent grave, i.e. same key as the tilde, but used without Shift). This currently works just fine between windows of any app (Chrome, Safari, Finder), but not with Word. It's driving me nuts! Any other suggestions of what may be causing this (and how to fix it?).
    Many thanks!
    Elena

  • Full screen button in MS Word for Mac 2011?

Does anyone know how to add the full screen button (two diagonal arrows in the top right hand corner of most apps) to MS Word for Mac 2011? I don't want to use full screen mode. I just want to get Word to fill the screen without manual adjustment.

I recently had my hard drive replaced and had to reinstall Microsoft 2011. I know for a fact that I had the diagonal arrows before and now they are gone. I have searched high and low on how to get them back on with no luck.

  • Bizarre Thing Word for Mac 2011 Restore Standard Fonts

I don't know where to post this. I can't find a section for discussing Word for Mac 2011 even though a bazillion people probably use it. So I'm hoping someone who does will read this and give me some insight.
I've been having a terrible time opening Word. The W just bounces around on the dock a few times and then settles down and it never opens. When I try to open a specific document through Finder, it's completely non-responsive. So I read on this forum that the issue could be checking your Font Book and possibly restoring standard fonts. So I thought I had nothing to lose (HAH!) and I went to Font Book and did the Font Validation test. I didn't have any serious errors but I thought what the heck and I clicked the box that said Restore Standard Fonts. Then I tried to open Word and it opened flawlessly. Yippee, or so I thought.
Two days later I tried to open a Word document that is 433 pages long. Well guess what, now it's only 376 pages. I was completely freaking out. What could have happened? I scrolled through it and each page is there sequentially. I don't understand how this could have occurred. Could "Restore Standard Fonts" have done something to the spacing? Could it have removed certain letters?  I can't see anything missing, but how could I have lost 57 pages?
Well luckily I had an old hardcopy of the document and was able to see that prior to this Restore Standard Font action, there were 24 double-spaced lines to a page and now there are 28. So I think that's the explanation, although I can't be completely sure, unless I review the entire document word for word.
So can someone please explain why this happened? Why does Restore Standard Fonts add lines to a page? Are the letters smaller? Is my document okay? Or should I not have done what I did.

These forums are really for Apple products.   MS runs its own forums which focus entirely on its products, where you might want to also search/ask:

  • Problem selecting text in PDF created by MS Word for Mac 2011

I'm viewing PDFs in Adobe Digital Editions 4.0, and when I try to select text, the text that actually gets selected is 1-2 lines BELOW where the cursor (I-bar) is located.  This makes highlighting text extremely difficult.  This only seems to happen with PDFs that were created in MS Word for Mac 2011 and viewed in Adobe Digital Editions.
If I try opening the very same PDF file in Adobe Reader, the cursor highlights text just fine.  If I open it in Preview, it works fine too.  It just won't work when viewing the PDF in Adobe Digital Editions.
    System:  Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite
I have not been able to find any info on this issue anywhere, and if anyone knows a fix or workaround, I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
    - and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.

  • Help! Word for mac 2011 won't open files

    Hi,
I wasn't able to find a suitable category to place this question under, but hope someone can help all the same.
I have Word for Mac 2011 on my 2011 iMac. In the last couple of days, it has stopped opening files (by double-clicking on them, or by going to File > Open). Instead, I get an error message which reads:
"Document name" uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version
(The message then continues with smaller print, telling me how this is for security reasons but that I should be able to use File > Open to access the file - which I can't).
The only way I have found to open the files is by using File > Open and in the 'Enable' box choosing 'Recover Text from any file'. However, this is pretty unhelpful because I lose the file's logos and formatting.
Note that this problem happens to all files regardless of which version of Word they were created on.
Please help! I really need to access my Word docs...
    Thanks in advance.

I am also suddenly having this problem.  It seemed to start after I upgraded to Lion.  I had Word 2003 until I upgraded to Word 2011 last year, so I don't have 2008 to go back to.  The documents it won't open are just blank.  They will open with Open Office.  This is just so annoying!  I thought it was a Lion incompatibility, but you are saying it is a Microsoft problem?

  • Documents in Word for Mac 97-2004 don't open in Word for Mac 2011

I have some Word documents that have been created in Word 97-2004. I didn't have any trouble with opening them on my Mac until I updated Word for Mac to 2011. Now they don't open anymore and I get a message that the document type is blocked by Word for Mac
2011. How can I open these documents again?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Equation editor in word for mac 2011

I apologize if this is straying too far from elements of the Lion discussion but
I have seen others compliment the capability of the equation editor in Word for Mac 2011. It's icon is
at the right end of the Document Elements toolbar.
But in my version of this software the icon is greyed out and unavailable. Any insight or comments?

Thanks quicksilver8 - turned out eqation editor was greyey out because
my file was opened in "compatibility mode" - when I open a file in ".docx" mode
    the equation editor is available.
