Does Xserve with OS 10.6.4 support multipath on non-apple storage now?

Hi,
We are installing 3 Xserves and a non-apple storage (Compellent, dual controller) at customer site, Xserve is running MAC OS 10.6.4 and have installed Xsan. One fibre cable on Xserve is connected to the fibre switch.
During test we found that if LUNs are mapped from multiple WWPNs in one WWNN, The volumes create by Xsan will have link communication and performance issue. We queried Compellent Support and got answered that Apple server doesn't support multipathing on non-apple storage so far, so we have to use only one active link per WWNN.
Is that true and is there any solution for the issue?
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply Colin,
In the Compellent Tech Tip I found following description:
MacOS may incorrectly issue commands to all Storage Center Ports with the same World Wide Node Name (wwnn), even though the volume is only mapped out of a single Storage Center Port. Commands down invalid paths will be rejected by Storage Center. MacOS may not properly acknowledge that the commands were rejected. There will be data integrity issues if the MacOS does not properly acknowledge that commands failed.
All front end primary connections from a controller will have the same wwnn, but unique World Wide Port Names (wwpn or wwn). Each controller in a clustered controller system will have a unique wwnn. Front end reserve ports will have a different wwnn than the primaries.
This behavior has been seen with Storage Center 4.0.2 and 4.1.3 along with MacOS 10.5.3 and 10.5.4. This issue is assumed to exist with all versions of Storage Center and MacOS 1.5.2-1.5.4. It could possibly affect earlier versions of MacOS.
WORKAROUND
The workaround for this issue is to ensure that a Mac Server can only view one front end primary port for each controller. This can be done through zoning. For MacOS, it is recommended that zones are setup so that a Mac Server can only see a single front end primary connection from each controller. Only a single Mac port should be used. At this time, Apple does not support multipathing with non-Apple Storage. A volume should only be mapped out of a single port on Storage Center to a single port on the Mac Server.
What my issue is I connected two active front end ports on each controller to Xserve, that made Xserve "see" two WWPNs in the same WWNN, So regarding the content above, I should connect only one active front end port to the Xserve on each controller. Do you agree?
Thanks!

What does this message mean Charging is not supported with this device?

You've gotten 2 good answers already, but there's a key assumption in both that you got the message when connecting the iPhone to some other device. If this is the case you can get an adapter in the Apple online store that will allow charging from older devices.
If, however, this message appears when you are not connected to anything the problem is dirt or moisture in the dock connector at the bottom of the phone. Clean it with a dry toothbrush or air blast.

  • Does NW7.4 ABAP stack still not support usernametoken with digest password?

    Hello, experts,
I got the message from here Username Token with digest password on AS ABAP that NW7.0 ABAP STACK can't support usernametoken with digest password.
Does NW7.4 ABAP stack still not support usernametoken with digest password?
or can I custom the method VERIFY_USERNAME_TOKEN in CL_WS_SECURITY_PROFILE to support usernametoken with digest password?
or does sap have any plan to support this security requirement?
    Many thanks.

I asked my experts about your question. On the client side we support this. We cannot support digest passwords on the server side. We save passwords in hashed format on the server side. To support digest passwords, the client would either need to send the password in clear text so that the digest can be calculated or the server would have to store the password in clear text, so that the digest password can be calculated. From a security standpoint these are questionable ideas. Either an eavesdropper is picking up the passwords from the traffic or the attacker who breaks the server suddenly has all the passwords in clear text.
You can modify the method VERIFY_USERNAME_TOKEN, but if an upgrade comes along that changes this package, you'll be prompted for a correction import. Then you will either have to skip the upgrade or lose your customization.

  • Securing old 10.4 xserve with hot spare - new xserve does not boot with 10.

    dear you,
I am in the murky situation of having to secure a single, non redundant productive scenario which is running on one xserve (model identifier 1,1; dual core 3GHz; boot-rom XS11.0080.B00). due to several reasons the server needs to be cloned, so that a separate xserve with a daily cloned boot-device can take over if things go south with the productive one.
unfortunately the newly bought xserve quadcore single 2.26GHz refuses to boot from the image taken from the production machine. tried to downgrade firmware, did not help. new machine crashes during startup (empty grey screen).
anybody knows any help? moving the production machine to 10.5 or newer is NO option.
an option could be two elder xserves I have here additionally. how do I find out which xserve model will boot with an image from the production server?
thank you all for any idea in advance,
    thaijay

Sorry, failed to let you know the productive server is running 10.4.11. please let me know which other details I can post/will help us with this issue

This is never going to work via cloning.
The server you're cloning has to be one of the original Intel-based XServes. Each successive revision adds requirements to the OS to the point where they have a minimum OS version. In the case of the latest generation servers, they won't run on anything earlier than 10.5.6 (IIRC). To put it simply - 10.4 doesn't know how to drive the latest generation hardware.
In any case, cloning is rarely a good idea for servers anyway. You would do better to look at the services you're running and look at backup/failover plans for them rather than trying to clone the entire server. Many services such as Open Directory, DNS, MySQL and more have built-in replication systems that are designed to replicate their data across many machines. Other client-facing services such as AFP, web, FTP, etc. can be set to failover (where the second machine takes over the service when the primary machine fails).
Such replication/failover techniques are far more reliable than a daily clone, and they're also faster. Replicated data could be maintained up to the minute, compared to a day old data if you need to boot up the clone.
If you really, really want to go the clone route, then reverse the roles - setup the new machine as the primary server with all the services and clone this machine to create your failover system. 10.5.6 will run the old/original XServe, it's just a matter of updating your services to the newer version.

  • XServe with 3 x 500Gb Drives - RAID 5 Possible ?

    Hi Guys,
My supplier is telling me we can chuck 3 x 500Gb drives into a standard dual processor Xserve and then raid 5 them like we usually do on our larger raids with 6 or so disks.
I have a feeling this is not possible normally. On the website it says - "AppleRAID software RAID supports RAID 0 and 1 with online rebuilding; optional PCI hardware RAID controller"
I take it I will need the "optional PCI hardware RAID controller" ??? to acheive raid 5 ?
I'll do a bit more looking around and see if I can find the answer but if anyone knows...
    Regards
    Mitch

Not sure about the performance increase but I would say yes, as we'll be using a Hardware raid card to talk to the drives.
The Mirroring you've done is a software "raid". I have done it this way before with our other Xserves with 2 drives but seeing we have the opportunity to do it with the raid card I believe it's the way to go.
If we lose a drive the others take over seemlessly (Ihope!)
Others here who already have their Xsrvs doing this will post I hope to back me up or let us both know the correct answer. I am still waiting for the money to order mine !

  • Why doesn't the MBPr support 2560x1440 over HDMI with OSX when Windows7 (bootcamp) supports it just fine?

I purchased a 2013 MBPr 15" (the first Mac I've ever owned btw) and so far have enjoyed the experience. I purchased a large 27" high resolution 2560x1440 non-Apple display which I planned on using HDMI output for, since HDMI has no problem supporting this resolution. After receiving this display yesterday I came to the sad realization that OSX does not support 2560x1440 over HDMI. However, under further investigation I found that Windows7 in Bootcamp on the same machine will beautifully display the full 2560x1440 over HDMI.
This means that OSX is the problem, and not the MBPr since Windows7 displayed the full resolution with no issue. If the hardware can support it, why would Apple disable it in the software? Is this just their way of forcing people to use DisplayPort? Or is there hope for them fixing this in future versions?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • Should Apple punt with RAW and/or DNG support ?

It seems that Apple is taking a very detailed approach to profiling cameras before adding support to Aperture. Consequently Aperture may always be later than others apps to add new camera support. Also there will always be legacy or specialty cameras deemed not worth the trouble that don't get added too. I wonder if rather than asking Apple to support every camera made past and present it wouldn't be better to punt and ask for feature changes that make it easier to integrate other RAW developers into an Aperture workflow.
Further for a few of my most valuable images, maybe 1 out of 1000, no matter how good Aperture's RAW conversion I will always want to try other RAW developers to see if they might do slightly better on a top select image. An professional app that wants to host my entire photo archive must logically offer a workflow that supports any camera past or future that I may use even once.
The tools already exist to export a master and develop it with other RAW converters also to manage different master files of the same image using stacks. All that Apple would need to do to make the unsupported camera workflow in Aperture a useable alternative is make a few minor changes to already existing features:
    1. In the RAW + JPEG workflow the JPEG is the second class member. You can expose it and have it stacked with the RAW master but you have to manually make it the stack pick. Otherwise when you close the stack you see only the unsupported master file which means nothing. It's not a problem restacking one image and not thinkable with thousands of images. I haven't found a way to get around this with Automator/Applescript. MAYBE: If the JPEG were the first image in the stack then I could still use Aperture for sorting, DAM, keywords, rating, etc. and just process my unsupported images with an external application.
    2. I can use Export Master to save out a master file but the process of doing that then reimporting the master file and stacking it with the original is a tedious manual effort. Again Automator/Applescript can help here but more would be needed. MAYBE: If I could duplicate a master file inside a project or stack and if Aperture had an 'Open Master file with external editor" command then it would be easy to have a duplicate master file stored by Aperture that might be used with any other RAW processing application.
    3. When I use 'Export Master' now to process some images with ACR or Nikon Capture then I can reimport the TIFF file or JPEG that I create but I can't easily associate them as versions or as externally edited files with their proper masters. MAYBE: There should be a way to link master files with the rendered versions of those files created by external RAW processors.
    4. I started my photographic life with film. Most current 'pros' did the same. If I want to have one home for all my photo archive then it has to support film scans of larger sizes and export them to an external editor in something other than Adobe RGB. Automator and Applescript are will make this work in v1.5 but just barely. MAYBE: Give me a way to have my hi-res film scans stored in Aperture and send them to Photoshop without compressing them to Adobe RGB or downsampling to fit Aperture's current filesize (aprox. 250MB) limitation.
I can't imagine having many different databases and apps for unsupported images from a camera I may only use once. If Apple would just streamline and tweak a few features that exist in v1.5 then Aperture could be the home to all my digital images even if some of them had to be developed by another program.
I can't imagine a better workflow than using Aperture with any of it's supported cameras. That shouldn't stop Apple from opening the door for making use of Aperture's great database and DAM features with unsupported cameras too.

Eric: Great, Aperture 3 might be out by spring 2010? That's only 6 months or so from now. [/sarcasm]
I appreciate the pointer to the AI article, but personally I'm more interested in whether Apple is working on adding additional RAW support for Aperture/Mac OS X any time soon, and certainly before Aperture 3 is out. Both Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2.5 are more than capable for my workflow and editing needs.
This week only added to my dismay re: Aperture v. Lightroom update likelihood and frequency; still radio silence from Apple, and Adobe releases a public beta of Lightroom 3, even as Lightroom 2 was released subsequent to Aperture 2 and has had more updates since its initial release than Aperture 2.
Brian, can you elaborate on the DNG conversion process that worked for you? Having tried every possible profile (I believe) in the latest release of the DNG Converter app, I have to say I'm skeptical that there's a setting that works with the GF1. But I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised!

Does OS Lion 10.7.5 support Airplay mirror of Apple TV 3? I can't find the option in Setting>Display on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro.
I've rebooted all 3 devices, still does not work. Both Apple TV and MBP are on the same wifi. And the Apple TV AirPlay option is on. Can someone help? Thank you.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • Problems with new display, "Input not supported"

So, I just got myself a new LCD screen (Acer AL2016WCbd) for my G4 (DP 1Ghz Quicksilver 2002 w/ 10.5 installed). The monitor seems to work alright and everything with my Windows box, but whenever I try to use it with my G4 the monitor goes black, flashes an error box saying "Input not supported," and then goes to sleep. It does show the boot screen... the gray background and Apple logo... but goes black after that.
I've tried rebooting, resetting the PMU, tried booting in Single User and Verbose mode, tried hooking the G4 up to another monitor and lowering the resolution to 800x600 @ 75Hz and then reconnecting the Acer, but no dice.
My only other ideas are to try hooking it up over DVI instead of VGA (though I'd need to get an adapter for that); playing around with a few different things in target disk mode by hooking it up to my laptop (which I don't currently have); and trying to boot from my Leopard install disk (when I find it). Might any of these things do any good? Is there anything else I haven't thought of? Or am I just wasting my time?

OK, so I can get the display working if I first boot up with another display, set the resolution to whatever I want it to be, then hotswap in the Acer that's been giving me the problems. But once I restart my computer I have to go through the whole process again. Either the tower isn't picking up on the display profile from the monitor or the monitor just isn't sending it to the tower.
My question now is: is there a way to for me to lock the resolution and refresh rate, so it always outputs at, say, 1680x1050 at 60Hz? Both Newegg and Acer have been giving me all kinds of (excuse me here) sh** about how they can't help me, so I really don't want to deal with them anymore by having to return/exchange the monitor or get it serviced. I mean, I know the thing works and I know the resolution I want it to run at. I just want to be able to lock it so Leopard doesn't revert to some unsupported output every time I reboot.

  • Itunes will not open with no error, been through support advice please

iTunes does not open and there is no error. I've been through all the steps with support over phone. Had my issue escalated to an engineer and still the problem exists. Anyone know of where i can find service to come to my household and fix it that way.

I click on the iTunes store button and it comes up with the loading bar at the top of the screen where the song time marker would be, but nothing ever happens. It just loads and loads and loads, I don't even get an error message...
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
