Does Yosemite boot up differently with filevault turned on

Can anyone confirm to me if having FileVault turned on causes Yosemite to boot up differently to when FileVault is turned off?
When I first set up my MacBook I enabled FileVault, and my usual boot and log in procedure consisted of; My user name and password prompt is the first thing to appear on screen, along with a blurred image on my wallpaper and a tiny Apple logo in the top left of the screen. Then once I have entered my password a progress bar appears and once its full I am logged in.
I have just turned FileVault off and ever since the restart my MacBook boots up differently. The first thing that now appears is a black background with a white Apple logo centre screen with a progress bar. Once the bar is full the image then changes to my blurred background with the user name and password prompt. Also the little white Apple logo in the top left of the screen is gone.

No.

  • Backing up with Filevault turned on?

    OS 10.6.8—If I have Filevault turned on, what is the best way to back up the hard drive maintaining encryption on the back-up. Time Machine will not work. Do Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper do this? Can one use Filevault and Time Machine in OS 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9?

    Yes.  Effective with 10.7, File Vault is entirely different (it should have been given a different name).  It's whole-disk encryption, and works seamlessly with Time Machine, just as it does on an unencrypted drive.
    Also, effective with Lion, TM can encrypt backups made to an internal or local external HD; and with Mountain Lion, it can encrypt backups made over a network (in both cases, whether the Mac's disk is encrypted or not).
    However, you should decrypt your home folder before upgrading. Note that takes a lot of space temporarily, and quite a while.  (You can transfer and run "legacy" File Vault on Lion, but that has all the same downsides as before.)

  • Yosemite boot up stalls with grey bar 1/3 along

    After a successful installation of Yosemite the boot times have been getting longer and longer and now the boot up stalls with grey bar 1/3 along and i have to hold down the power button to shut down and try again. It takes many hard reboots to occasionally make it to the desktop! Has anyone had this issue and solved it?

    What solved my case was removing this from:

  • GS70 - Does not boot - black screen with solid white dash

    Sorry for the long post - I've been beating my head against this problem all day, filed a report ticket and really need help from anyone who has ideas.
    Yesterday evening after finally relenting and allowing the patch Tuesday updates to install on my GS70 Stealth I tried to power on my computer and it remained stuck at the MSI logo. I waited 3 hours with no success before powering it off and attempting to access the bios by hitting the delete button. The screen turned black except for one non-blinking white dash near the center of the screen. This screen also remains indefinitely and requires a hardware power off to work. I've tried all of the function key presses and recovery shortcuts to no avail.
    Eventually I tried to boot into linux via a live USB. I still could not access the bios but, to my surprise, so long as this USB is in my system, Windows happily boots. After this I tried to revert to a system restore point before the updates but that did not resolve the problem. I also tried to update the BIOS but there is no way to install BIOS updates that I know of that doesn't require accessing the old BIOS first (which I cannot do because the black screen with a white dash is still all that shows up). I tried forcing the UEFI bios to load through windows recovery settings with no luck either.
    I've sent in an RMA/Support request and hopefully MSI will repair or replace my device but I sent it in for an RMA literally less than two months ago and to be having to do it again so soon is starting to turn me off of the product. For me to insure and ship my device to MSI costs a little over $100 each time which is rapidly turning this $1600 product into an $1800 one and turning me from an MSI brand loyalist to a 'one-star-review everywhere' evangelist. Is it possible that something MSI did during the last RMA screwed up my motherboard (they replaced the disfunctional steel series keyboard with a new marginally more functional steel series keyboard)? Does MSI ever cover the shipping costs for an RMA if the RMA is a result of damage that they caused to the device? Is there anything I should do to try to avoid burning more money trying to get a luxury-priced product I've already paid for to function?

    i had similar problem myself on my first GS70 it has some sort of bios problem that it random hangs itself :/ causes OS not to boot and bios refuses to load but i managed to get my recovery USB to boot but not bios yet so i sent laptop off for repair they replaced the motherboard so i got it back then i had an faulty gpu :/ so i took it back and got money back so i bought new one some where else since than i havent had problem so this sort of problem sounds like bios firmware isnt booting propertly :/ so have you tried removing msata and HDD from laptop and then power laptop on? to see if bios gets forced on if so power it off put msata back on and so then power laptop back on and bios shall work again

  • Why does final keyword work differently with collection

    I have tried final on StringBuffer but when i changed the value of StringBuffer object its throws a compile time error but when i did same thing with vector it work perfectly fine.
    any one knows the reason? please send me in details.
    final Vector v = new Vector();
    v.add("String1");
    v.add("String2");
    final StringBuffer sb  = new StringBuffer();
    sb = sb.append("xyz");

    Because you haven't understood the keyword final. when you make a reference final you may not change the object to which it points to.
    final StringBuffer sb  = new StringBuffer();This is valid because this is the first time you instatiate sb
    sb = sb.append("xyz");this is invalid because you are trying to assign a new object to a reference that may only be assigned to once.
    Compare
    final int testInt = 1;
    testInt = 2; //errorthe vector works because you do not assign vector reference v a new Vector object

  • 10.6.4 with Filevault - random freeze at login

    Hello,
    I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue:
    When logging in into account on Mac running 10.6.4 with Filevault turned on, the system will randomly freeze showing beach-ball or the mouse cursor (black arrow pointer). It does not respond to any key presses any mouse clicks. Only powering off shuts off the computer. On next boot it either does the same thing or logs in the user account - again randomly.
    I created multiple user accounts (both admin and limited user) with same effect when Filevault is turned on. It happens in situations when the system is loading other extensions, say Little Snitch, Menu Meters or none at all.
    The freezing goes away as soon as Filevault is turned off, no matter if the OS is loading start-up items or not.
    I have formatted the hard disk and did a complete re-install, Archive-Install, talked with Apple Support but the problem remains unresolved. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    What I see in the OS's secure.log is:
    10-10-28 12:00:02 PM authorizationhost[49979] Failed to authenticate user (tDirStatus: -14090).

    You most likely had a corrupted system prior to upgrading. The solution is to reinstall OS X. Snow Leopard's installer will replace the current system with a new one but preserve your Home folder, third-party applications, network prefs, etc. Hopefully this will fix the problem. If it does then reinstall the 10.6.4 combo updater.

  • Laptop won't boot in windows with lan enabled in BIOS

    Hi,
    Toshiba A200-AH3. Windows 7.
    So at one point it stopped loading windows 7, it would load until this point (loading screen for windows 7). So, I reinstalled Windows 7 (once format). Twice. It still didn't work. So, somebody gave me the idea to disable everything in bios, which I did. And then it worked. So I went back and just enabled the 2nd CPU in bios and that's about it. A few days ago I needed to connect the lan and I went to bios and enabled lan. Guess what, it would stop at the loading screen just like before.
    Safe mode does not work either.
    With lan turned off in bios, I went to Toshiba.ca and installed the Realtek-Network-Driver6.189.1213.2006 for Windows Vista (as they say this should work on win7 too). Enabled lan and it still didn't boot windows.
    What are my options?

    I would need to make the Lan work.
    You can obtain an ExpressCard for the LAN. Here are a few at NewEgg.
    how do I flash the bios.
    I'm assuming you have 32-bit Windows. This should work in Windows 7 as well.

    My Mac OS Lion 10.7 FileVaulted HD does not boot, prohibitory sign, stop sign appears some minutes after boot starts. Disk Utility repair shows four error messages:

    I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

    Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

  • K9AGM3-F does not boot with PCIe 4x device in PCIe 16x slot

    K9AGM3-F motherboard does not boot with PCIe 4x Intel PRO/1000 PT dual port network interface card installed into PCIe 16x slot on motherboard. The boot process stops in BIOS screens. The motherboard works flawlessly without this NIC. K9VGM-V + Intel PRO/1000 PT boot successfully. I tried three K9AGM3-F motherboards and two Intel PRO/1000 PT NICs in different combinations, the results are always the same. It appears to be some kind of BIOS problem.

    Minor point, probably irrelevant: I said you install the driver f i r s t. Then you put the physical card in.
    The driver is completely irrelevant because the driver is a part of operating system, but as I already wrote before the boot process stops long before the OS start.
    Quote from: Fredrik Åsenius on 09-April-08, 22:52:27
    No stability issues otherwise?
    PSU is always good to know.
    The PSU is irrelevant too because the same NICs work in the PCIe 1x slot of the same motherboard with the same PSU.

  • Safe Boot and Lion 10.7.1 with FileVault 2

    I have several Macs running 10.7.1. On my MacBook Pro, I also have FileVault 2 running. The other two machines (an iMac and a 13" MacBook Pro) do not have FileVault. My core i7 MacBook Pro with FileVault 2 will not safeboot, hanging about 25% of the way through. The other machines safeboot without a problem. Has anyone running 10.7.1 and having FileVault 2 running been able to successfully safeboot? I reinstalled Lion tonight and still can't safeboot.
    I have gone so far as to remove old PowerPC kernel extensions and frameworks, with no improvement. I was able to safeboot in Snow Leopard without a problem. I have checked the disk, and it is clean in disk utility running from the Lion restore partition. I have checked and repaired permissions. Cleaned caches. Etc. Basically, I have run all the usual maintenance and trouble shooting utilities, but am still seeing this problem.
    I have carefully reviewed the console logs after booting and don't see anything particularly troubling.
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Norm

    That seemed to do the trick. One caveat is that you really need to make sure that the BT files get deleted from the Preferences directory after copying them to the desktop. Cmd-Drag does not seem to actually move them. I had to delete them and provide authentication before it would allow me to move them to the trash.
    However, all appears to be well now!

    I just Installed Yosemite update on MacBook Pro retina late 2013 will not boot flashing folder with ?

    dunno, Lynn--maybe Etrecheck. trying running disk utility to verify the status of your hard drive. That may give you a basic idea. Perhaps tech tool pro.  As for it running hot, I can't say for sure. try shutting it down and using a vacuum clearner +crevice tool around the back of it.  It's been my experience that hard drives usually fail without a lot of warning, luckily you have a backup. Afterwards you can say "Yup, that went bad".  I've done a little research and found out that your MacBook Pro doesn't come with a conventional hard drive as such, but an SSD (solid state device) . It's upgradeable (up to 1 TB ) but not cheaply
    go here for more info (OWC) :http://eshop.macsales.com. For right now, I'd recommend resetting the SMC/PMU, maybe zapping the pram . to do that, reboot, hold down Apple+Option, P+R keys while rebooting. Hold down for 3 chimes, let go and let it boot. as for the SMC thing....
    I'm assuming your battery isn't removeable-shut down computer, plug in MagSafe cable . On built in keyboard, on left side, press Shift-Control-Option and power button at the same time.  release all the keys and the power button. press power button again to turn on computer
    that is all

Because your post doesn't indicate was OS you are using on your iMac, I can't give you a link to the most appropriate forum.
    Basically, though, the version of TechTool on the AppleCare disks is not compatible with newer versions of OS X and/or Macs (I can't remember which). If you don't get a satisfactory response by posting in the appropriate iMac or OS X forum, I suggest you take your iMac to the geniuses at the Apple Store. • Satellite C660-2EV crashed with BSOD and does not boot

    My Satellite laptop C660-2EV running Windows 7, for no apparent reason crashed to the blue screen of death, after which it would not reboot.
    I have attempted to reboot in safe mode using the function keys but it gets as far as loading: windows\system32\drivers/classpnp.sys and then just sits there. From the various Internet posts it would appear that there is no definitive answer to this problem. Recommendation is to reload using recovery disks or the hidden image.
    I cannot access the user manual as it is on the laptop so i have referenced the various posts on the internet. I had created repair and recovery disks when i purchased the laptop and so following various posts I booted my system with the repair disk and the process started.
    Unfortunately the screens that appeared were different than those in the posts and as I do not have access to a user manual, I do not know if I am following the correct procedure.
    Can anybody provide me with a PDF user manual for a C660-2EV laptop ?
    Alternatively can anybody advise me how to reload Windows 7 ?
    Thank you in anticipation.

    Users manuals document can be downloaded from http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_manuals.jsp
    Anyway, if you have created recovery discs please start your notebook and press f12 to enter boot menu. When boot menu is shown on the screen put recovery disc 1 into optical disc drive and choose CD/DVD device as bootable device and press ENTER.
    Installation should start. What you must do is just to follow menu on the screen. It must be similar as sown on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
