Does your 21.5-inch iMac creak when you turn it on?

I have a Mid 2010 21.5-inch iMac. When I wake it up, having left it in Sleep mode for a few hours, it creaks and pops. These sounds clearly come from inside the iMac, so I would imagine they're the sound of the metal (or perhaps plastic components) heating up and expanding as the computer warms up.
Has anyone else noticed this with their 21.5-inch iMac? The sounds are actually quite loud, and not at all subtle or easy to miss.
My iMac didn't do this back in November 2010 when I first got it, but it does now (May 2011).

Hi Reuben,
Could it be the Superdrive noise, or is it separate of that? I have noticed that this iMac's drive makes a different sound upon wake-up than my older iMac or my newer MBP. The mechanism is clearly different in the new one so the sound is different as well. Just wondering if that is the noise you are hearing or if it's in addition to that...
Mike

  • HT5278 Does your games and apps get wiped when you upgrade your iPad to the IOS 5.1.1

Hi I would like to know that if you upgrade your IPAD 2 to IOS 5.1.1 will all the stuff you have on your IPAD get wiped

For the sake of updating, it doesn't matter too much - but you can find it on the iPad through Settings -> About - Version. If your current version is 4.x or older, you'll have to do it through iTunes... but even if you have a newer version, if you want to be extra sure that you'll keep your data then do it through iTunes (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623) and make sure to let iTunes fully back-up your iPad before you start the update.

  • When you turn your macbook on does it...

Make a weird (excuse my impression) "Reee orr reee rahh rahhh" sound! :P
The same sound it makes when you put a CD in? Is this a normal sound?
    Does everyones do it?
Why does it make this unattractive sound? Ive never had a laptop that does it before...
And when you show your friends your macbook they go wowwww until you press on :P

I assume you mean when you press the "on" button? Easy way to avoid this. Put the Mac to sleep instead of turning it off. Then when you open it up to show it off to your friends, it will flash on and, presumably, not make that sound.
The sound it's making is likely the hard drive coming to life, which it needs to do if it's been shut down and off for a while.

  • What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle?

What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle? It's a old imac from 1997.

I don't have original discs that it came with.
Then you still can use the second option with the keyboard combo I posted, called "resetting the PRAM."
Also when you way hold the c key down do you mean turn computer off and turn back on holding the c key?
Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMacG3_2000UserManual.PDF
has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:
3.6v Newer Technology Lithium 1/2 AA PRAM Computer Clock Battery

  • What does it means when you turn on the macbook and a file with a "?" mark flashes?

What does it means when you turn on the macbook and a file with a "?" mark flashes?

It usually means some system files are missing or corrupted. Reinstalling OS X is the fix:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • How does system automatically picks up document type when you enter INV?

1.How does system automatically picks up document type when you enter Invoice?
2.What is Algorithms? Where is it used?
3.What is the use of Customer Ledger Inquiry?

The document type is hard coded by the system. Look at UDC table 00/DT for the document types in your system. Notice that some of those are marked as hard coded/reserved by JDE. You may wish to dowload the Accounts Receivable manual and read that to learn more about the document types.
Not sure what you mean by algorithm, unless you are looking for how the system determines what document type to assign on invoice entry.
These comments apply to accounts receivable and to JDE World, since you posted in the JDE World forum and are talking about the customer ledger inquiry. If you are in Enterprise One and asking about Accounts Payable, then this reply can be ignored (though Enterprise One works pretty similar to World in this respect).
What is the use of the Customer Ledger Inquiry. To view accounts receivable detail history for a given customer, viewing on line. Whomever works in the accounts receivable department will likely use the Customer Ledger Inquiry quite a bit.
    Hope this helps a bit.

    Hello pepi95,

If you just bought the nano, why not bring it back for a replacement or your money back? It's definitely a defective iPod. Not much else for options here. Sorry.

  • How do you silence the opening chord when you turn on the iMac?

How do you silence the opening chord when you turn on the iMac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I do not recommend you to disable the startup sound. It indicates hardware problems when your computer is not working correctly, so it is important to leave it turned on. What you can do is to reduce the volume in OS X.
Anyway, if you want to disable the startup sound, the easiest way is to turn off the volume in OS X.

When you turn on the ipad2 it does not start up properly.  The rotating disk that happens when you turn off the ipad appears after the apple logo comes up during start-up and stays there for ten minutes.  Then, the ipad will start up properly.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
