Does your new 27" LED Cinema Display buzz?

Got my 27 inch LED Cinema Display yesterday: very nice monitor.
However, I have noticed a feint buzz/ticking coming from the bottom right of the monitor when the brightness is set high. Just loud enough to be VERY annoying!
Is this a feature of the monitor? Does anyone else's new 27" Display have a buzz?

yes, the reason it sounds like the electromagnetic interference that induces tones in speaker drivers (such as the microwave energy from cell phones) is because it is essentially the same mechanical action... which is a resonation electromagnetic coil (which will produce tones at whatever frequency it is vibrating).
The specific tones that it is producing are dependant on the electrical properties of the circuits attached to the coupled device - but it's probably possible that particular properties could cause the coils to create more than a single tone (just like a speaker)... on mine the tone didn't quite sound singular, but since the amplitude was analogue to the brightness i guessed that this pointed the transformer.
It used to be such a serious problem in inductively coupled conductive devices that it could shake the devices to pieces. These days it's only really an irritation in terms of noise - but it remains necessary to design the structure and housing of these devices to dampen and minimise these vibrations.
In much larger transformers the noise is very noticeable (have a listen the next time you pass an electrical substation).
... i could be wrong but it's a common problem in electronics and i think it's likely.

  • MBP with New Apple LED Cinema Display

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to use an early-2008 MacBook Pro with the new Apple LED Cinema Display? I know that the new display is made specifically for the latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air with the mini-display port, but I wondered whether there will be some type of adapter offered so that an older MacBook Pro may be used with the new display (or whether this is even possible).
    Any input is appreciated.

  • Image persistence on New 24" LED Cinema Display - Quick Reply needed please

    Hi
I have a new 24" LED Cinema display - delivered 14 days ago today (hence needing a quick reply!).
Yesterday I noticed image persistence down the entire left hand-side of the screen - should this happen on such a new display?
Should I return it / take it back?
    Thanks for any advice.
For what it is worth the image persistence is the left-hand column of the iTunes window - I can read the entire column from the top where it says "Music" down to the "Selected item" that appears above the album artwork window.
I do use iTunes a lot but certainly nothing out of the ordinary and often in reduced size mode or behind other windows. (i.e it does not sit in the same place all the time).
Since I took the screen out of the box the screen-saver has been set to turn on after 15 mins and the Energy Saver is set to turn the screen off after 20 mins (i.e I have taken screen saving measures).
Finally, I have done the "display an all-white image on the entire display" as per here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807) and after six hours of this the problem has improved, but certainly not gone away.
So, to return, or not to return, that is the question.
    Many thanks.
    Rob
PS - I bought this online at Apple Store - if I do return it, could I do this in person at physical Apple Store, or do I have to do it online?

I've had this same problem on my 24" iMac for some time (it's still under my AppleCare warranty, but it began doing this long ago). I searched these forums a year ago and never found anything about this, so I'm glad I found these posts here today.
I guess it's time to haul mine back into the store. Also I note that my screen has developed some dark areas, as if the fluorescent backlight has become irregular.

  • 8800 GT vs. new Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel)

I would like to buy the new Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel), however, have no idea if it is compatible with my Mac Pro. Bellows are the details of my desktop...
    Mac Pro (MacPro3.1) Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz * 2 (8 cores), with 12 GB DDRII 800 MHz.
Graphics cards for Mac Pro (Early 2008): NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (part number 630-9191 or 630-9897)
If it's not compatible, could someone let me know how to upgrade of what to make it work?
    Thanks!
    PJ

    Doesn't look hopeful.

Obviously the ATI 5770, once it ships, will work.
Apple Display tech note only addresses ATI 5xxx and only 2009-2010 Mac Pro models.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4279
Cutting off anything two years old, is now 'legacy'? I don't think they hope to sell their 27" to older Macs or PCs.
    In the product Q&A:
*This looks great! Does this work with PCs?*
Yes, but you'll need an adapter with a mini-displayport like the top of the line Radeon 5970 (they all have one MDP), or one of the 5870s specifically designed for Eyefinity (multiple displays). Search Newegg under graphics cards (advanced) and filter only cards with mini displayport. No other PC cards on the market, including Nvidia seem to have mini-displayport. It's a good interface, but I fail to see why Apple decided to loose customers to support it exclusively.

  • Question about the new 27" LED Cinema Display and text size

Hi, I own the 24" Apple LED Cinema Display and text on the monitor is just large enough for me. Won't text on the new 27" Display be much smaller with its higher resolution?

    MANY thanks for the tip.
Now then - all indications are that my Mini will NOT pass audio via the MDP Cable given the age as well as the lack of an HDMI port (I know there isn't one this rig).  Unless I am missing something I don't believe there is any adapter out there that will allow the audio to now pass through the MDP Cable if the rig itself was never configured to do so.
Following links in your posting, someone recommended this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=6331&seq=1&format=2#description
However it seems to be set up to deliver A/V to an HDMI display, and unless I am mistaken, the 27" LED ACD does not have an HDMI in.  Although my MacMini does have a S/PDIF Optical Digital Audio Output I don't believe the 27" LED ACD has any kind of separate audio input (either TOS Link or even 1/8 smini stereo).
So I reckon I am SOL with regard to getting the audio onto the new monitor from the Mini and I would need to keep my present speakers set up using the 18/" mini stereo out - but the video should still work......yes?

  • How to connect a new 27" LED Cinema Display to an older Mac Mini?

I bought a 27" LED Cinema Display (no Thunderbolt) but don't know how to connect it to my wife's older Mac Mini. I presume the Atlona adaptor is the solution, but I haven't bougt one yet.

The cord attached to the display splits into a Mini DisplayPort, USB, and a MagSafe connector (for powering a laptop).
There is a separate connector on the back of the display for the AC power cord.

  • The new 27" LED Cinema display

I have a Mac Pro from about 3 years ago with 2 graphic cards, both with DVI out
The newer ATI Radeon 3870 supports 2 screens at 2560x1440
Can I attach the new 27" LED screen with it's MiniDisplay Port?
    Thanks
    Rob

Niel, I think you missed that he doesn't have an Early 2009 Mac Pro. Robert's system doesn't have DisplayPort (nor does the Radeon 3870 Mac Edition), only DVI.
Robert, while you'd want to confirm with the company, this converter should work:

BTW, you've posted in the forum for the Early 2009 Mac Pro. This might lead people to provide inapplicable advice for your model of Mac.

  • Why does my 27 inch LED cinema display freeze my Macbook Pro when connecting?

    Hi,
I've had a 27 inch cinema display for about 2 years now and love it.
However, a good 50-70% of the time whenever I attach my MacBook Pro, currently 15 inch late 2011, rather than waking up the MBP, it just freezes the computer.  The same thing used to happen with my 13 inch MBP.
    Any ideas why that is?
    thanks,
    TT

I finally decided to just take my MBP down to the Apple store and see what would happen if I connected it to one of their new ACDs.  At 1st, the guy at the Genius Bar told me that my MBP only supported 1280x800 as a maximum resolution.  I told him that was for my MBP screen, and not an external monitor.  Finally I convinced him to let me connect my MBP to one of their monitors.  Low and behold, looking at the Display settings pane I saw some addtional resolutions, including 2560x1600!
So, now I have confirmed that my MBP can drive an external monitor to a resolution of 2560x1600, using just the single mini displayport connection.  I just have to figure out what's wrong with my ACD.  Suspecting that my older ACD might not support this higher resolution, I did finally discover that my model only supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1600.
    Sorry for all the confusion...

  • 24" and new 27" LED Cinema Displays constantly malfunction, anyone having similar issues as below?

    Long story short:
I had 2x 24" LED LCD's for ~three years directly connected to my 12-Core Mac Pro5,1 ATI Radeon HD 5770. Each had power supplies and LCD panels replaced 2-3 times, one was swapped for a new model. In May, 1 display wouldn't turn on. As the AppleCare on each was due to exp. in Oct., I called Apple Tech. To my surprise, within 24 hours they approved 2 new 27" models and refunded my AppleCare.
While working last night, 1 of the displays shut down. I reset my Mac Pro's NVRAM and SMC, plugged it into another surge protector (main is a APC SMART-UPS 1500 workstation “sine wave” for Mac Pro's), connected it to my new MacBook Air, 2012 Mac Mini, let it sit unplugged over night and it will not turn on. I connected the working display to the second input on my Mac Pro and it functioned properly. My Mac Pro does not recognize the second display when it is connected.
I researched APC SMART-UPS systems in case the UPS was at fault, nothing; if it were my other display and Mac would definitely be effected. I did read a lot of threads on the same issues with Apple's LED displays. I wrote the Apple rep. who approved the replacements, but I'm concerned this will keep happening, impeding my workflow. Has anyone else had this many issues with their displays? I'm very disappointed, the previous 23" CCFL LCD's lasted ~8 years each. This is unacceptable.
I'm hoping anyone with knowledge and experience might shed light onto this matter, ruling out any possibilty the cause may be related to my setup.

Thanks... But I do still want to be able to use the built-in iSight and the USB hubs.

  • Mac Pro and two new Apple LED Cinema Display 27" brightness control

    Hi all,
Have been using my new Mac Pro (HD5770) with one 27" display for a while and am loving it and to make my work easier I got one more 27" display but how do I change the brightness on the second display? Only the first one can be changed and it's a big difference in the colors on the displays.
    With Best Regards / Christian

Make sure you have the display update installed. Look for the ambient light sensor control in Displays system preference to see if it's installed.
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1107>
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4293>
    Turn off mirroring.
Do you have brightness slider for both displays?
Try unplugging the USB cable for one display so you can adjust the brightness on the other.

  • LED Cinema Display 27 Random Loss of USB

I have a brand new 27" LED Cinema display connected via Mini Display Port to my 2006 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card.  The display's USB cable is connected to a USB port on the back of the Mac Pro.  My keyboard is the newest Apple extended keyboard (wired) that is plugged into the back of the monitor.
The problem is that randomly (about one out every 8 boots but with no pattern or rhyme-or-reason), I have no USB connectivity from the keyboard.  I am unable to enter my user name and password to log in.  While it is in this state I have pulled the monitor's USB cable from the back of the Mac Pro, waited 15 seconds or so and then plugged it back in.  This does not fix the problem.  The only solution so far is to force shut down the computer using the power button on the front of the Mac Pro, then disconnect the monitor's power cable, plug the monitor's power cable back in and re-boot.  So far 100% success with this process.  Somehow removing power from the monitor resets its USB bus.  I just don't think I should have to do this once or twice a week... or more.
So I have a solution but it is a pain in the rear and involves crawling under my desk.  I could try plugging the keyboard directly into the Mac Pro and abandon all use of the USB ports on the back of the monitor but would hate to give up functionality that I paid for.
This only occurs on boot... I have never lost USB connectivity while the computer is running if it boots and works properly... even after sleep.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Norby

I installed Mountain Lion last night. Playing around a bit before going to bed I noticed that my keyboard seemed to fade in and out, sometimes what I typed showed up, sometimes not. This morning I was using Messages, tried the camera. First I got a warning saying no camera was attached to Mac (built in iSight?!?!?!). The unplug/plug method didn't address this. Restarted Mac Pro, camera showed up but there was major lag, like it was someone's video sent to me from a bad connection not locally streaming video! Also, graphical anomalies kept popping up in the video. (a note: none of this was happening with my MBP with FaceTime camera after ML install)
    And then it hit me.
Due to the short span of the mini display cable on the LED Display, I have to use an extension cord for the MiniDisplay and USB. Removing the MiniDisplay extension cured my video issues. I removed the USB extension and put in place another USB hub testing my previous post. So far, with keyboard and Wacom plugged into the Displays USB, no issues. It's early though so who knows. I wouldn't mind trying a straight connection to a Mac Pro USB but Apple has made the cable far too short and working with my head next to the tower just isn't desired.

  • Apple  Led Cinema Display anti glare?...

    Hi.
Is there any third party company switching over the new Apple Led Cinema Display to an anti glare screen, as we can find for the new 17" Mac Book Pro?
    Thanks.

    Hi.
Thank you Malcom, but this is not what i'm looking for.Because i work with photos and you can lose a lot of details on this kind of film.
As you can see here, according to the manufacturer:*Note: This film will create some dithering of the image and is not recommended if you are working with color critical programs.*
I was thinking about something like Techrestore does on the Macbook Pro 17", modifying the hardware
    itself.

  • 24" LED Cinema Display with my MacBook (2008)

I would be so grateful for some assistance and advice ....
Today I received my new 24" LED Cinema Display ... unfortunately, it did not come with any written instructions or directions. I tried to hook it up to my MacBook using the USB connection, but this did nothing to power up the monitor.
I called Apple Support, who advised me that I needed an adapter for a "mini display port" and a "mini dvi". But when I went to the Apple store, I was told that no such adapter existed. The guy at the Apple store said that the new monitors are not compatible with my Macbook ....... but how can this be, when the Cinema Display system requirements list "MacBook" ......?
Is this really true, that I have no recourse? Please someone help me if you can. It would break my heart to pack up this beautiful monitor and send it away.

Click here for a converter. The USB and FireWire ports on the display are there so the display can act as a hub; neither video nor sufficient power is transferred through them.

  • Give MacBook iSight priority over LED Cinema Display iSight?

    Hi all,
I have a new MacBook purchased in January 2010, which I hook up to a new Apple LED Cinema Display purchased a couple of weeks ago. Both the MacBook and display have iSight cameras built in.
I seem to be able to have both cameras working independently of each other within iChat and Photo Booth, but when I try and use a webcam on a website chatroom, no matter what I try, the camera in the display takes priority over the MacBook. I want the display camera to be disabled, and for the MacBook camera to work instead.
I have tried setting up the displays both as mirrored and extended, and tried moving the menu bar from display to MacBook and vice versa, but as soon as I enter a chatroom, the display camera is used.
I have tried altering the Flash settings in the chatrooms, but because both cameras are integrated and so have the same input settings, that doesn't work.
I have a feeling I am trying to achieve the impossible, but any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Hi,
    An Interesting one.
I am not sure there are any setting on the Mac to change this.
System Profiler is not "Dragable" to re-order the USB list.
Although it may be possible to use Terminal to re-order any list or priority that would be beyond my knowledge.
I would tend to go for the work around of using Photo Booth or iChat to make the unwanted camera Busy.
