Doesnt recognize external hard drive

After I updated with the latest fcpx 10.0.6, FCPX no longer recognizes my hard drive. I have used this hard drive since fcpx cam out and have had no problems. All of my specs match up to fcpx requirements. So now when I open FCPX, it loads all my projects/events and I can see them in FCPX. When it is done loading, all projects events and the xternal hard drive dissaperas from FCPX window. Any help is appreciated, because all ym projects are on that drive and I am in the middle of editing a project.

Actually four Errors messages now. These come up, and I am stuck witht eh spinning wheel of rainbow death.

  • HT3231 Migration assistant doesnt see external hard drive

Mac OS 10.7.5  Intel 2 gHx Core 2 Duo.  Just replaced a crashed hard drive.  Migration assistnat doesnt see external hard drive, although it is on desktop and working fine.  Connected by USB.  I have a backup on the external drive.  Too large to place on internal hard drive.  So frustrating!  I looked at forums online, no help.  Any ideas?

    1.  Definitely 10.7.5
    2.  I'm not convinced it is a TM drive.  It has been used as such, but I am not sure of its current status.  Of note, Time machine is currently using it, but I get the sense that it only uses part of the drive.  The file I want to use is in a seperate directory of the external hard drive than backups.backupdb, where Time machine is currently writing.  The file I want to use is called "Untitled - 2012.01.16-10.17.00.766.FullBackup" and the file type is package.  Of note, Time machine let's me have the option to restore the stuff it has been writing for the last few days.  Migration assistant, however, is not so cooperative.
    3.  I have been opening migration assistant, putting in password, choosing "from a Time machine backup or other disk", and then it shows only "Mac OS" as an option under "select your system".
Thanks for your interest and help!

  • Macbook pro no longer recognizes external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook Pro (2013) running OS X 10.8.5 will no longer recognize my external hard drive.
The hard drive, a Maxtor OneTouch 4, is granted quite old (c. 5 years) but has been working fine with my Macbook pro since I bought it 2 years ago. It is too full to do time machine backups but I just need to get some files off of it. It doesn't appear in Finder or in Disk Utility when connected and turned on.
Since it's only stopped working recently I suspect some software update may have rendered it obsolete. I have also noticed some glitchiness with my USB ports, but some things work fine.
If anyone has any suggestions of what to try, I would really appreciate it! I really need to access those files.
    Thanks very much in advance!

Have you tried all the ports?
Have you tried with a different cable?
Have you tested all the ports with other devices to see that they are functioning?

  • Imac no longer recognizes external hard drive

my iMac no longer recognizes my external hard drive. An icon used to be on my desktop, at times it would disappear and come back, but it has remained elusive for the past couple of months and is NOWHERE to be found. It doesn't even show up in the Disk Utiity. I need my files!

Please Google, "Intel iMac SMC Reset" and follow the instructions. If the drive is OK this may solve it.

  • Macbook No Longer Recognizes External Hard Drive

Recently I bought an external hard drive (Toshiba Automatic Backup Portable Hard Drive) to backup my Macbook (Mac OS X 10.6.8). I found that in order to have my Mac recognize the hard drive, I needed to partition it by formating it to MS-DOS (FAT). I had no problems after that and began to back up my computer. However, the next day, I plugged my external hard drive back in and the icon no longer shows up. I went to Disk Utilities and found it there, but it said that it was not mounted. Then I went to System Profiler to see if it was under "USB" but it did not show up. I have tried shutting down and restarting my computer a few times but each time is no different. I even added a USB 2.0 Hub but even that didn't work. Is there anything else that I could do? I have files already on there and some I do not really want to lose. Is there any uncomplicated way that I could be able to make my mac recognize my hard drive again?

    ellybook7,
In OS X you can read from an NTFS disk but not write to it - at least not without thrid-party software such as Paragon's NTFS for Mac.
I'm not sure what was working FINE in Mountain Lion that wouldn't work in Mavericks.

  • Macbook won't recognize external Hard Drive and issues with Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I have just bought a new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion and I am currently having problems with Time Machine.
The issue begun in Snow Leopard: Time Machine was taking too long to backup, and would often not finish the backup because the external hard drive would be unwillingly ejected.
Now with Mountain Lion I have reformated the drive (Mac OS Journaled) and about a third of the way through had the same issue: the drive was ejected before the backup could be finished. I restarted the machine and it happened again. However, now the computer won't even recognize the external drive when I plug it in. I have also tried to power off/on the drive itself to no progress.
I have tested the USB port with another drive and the port is fine. I have also tested the usb cable and it is fine. And Disk Utility does not recognize the drive (even when I try the >diskutil list command in terminal).
Now, I can hear the drive humming normally when I turn it on, and it is not usb-powered (my electricity current does fluctuate).
Could the interrupted backup procedures have damaged the drive? And if so, wouldn't the computer recognize it anyway?
It is a 4 year old WD 1 TB that is used exclusively for TM and has never left the house.
Thank you for your time reading this and let me know if you need any more information that could help out.
    Cheers!

From your description, I'd suspect a failing drive. Maybe time for a new external, especially as you've already re-formatted and it's still playing up.
I had a similar problem with one of my clone backups a few weeks ago - it failed, I erased it, re-cloned, worked a couple of times and then it failed again. Disk Utility didn't throw up any errors after re-formatting. I guess all disks die at some point.

  • PS3 cannot recognize external hard drive connected to Time Machine

I am trying to keep my Elements 2TB external hard drive connected to my Time Machine (via USB), and also use it as an external media source for my PS3.  When connecting the drive directly to the PS3  through the USB it recognizes it perfectly as an external media drive, but when I try to do it wirelessly through the Time Machine it does not find it.  I have the drive partitioned and the folders labeled correctly, the PS3 is connecting to the internet through the Time Machine.  I can connect to the external through my Macbook and see all the PS3 files when connected to the Time machine.
I am stumped.  I recently installed a larger (350gb) drive on my PS3 using the external drive for backup, and everything seemed to work fine, but I swear that before the installation my old drive recognized the external on the Time Machine (I may be imagining this).  Could the reformatting of the PS3 drive have something to do with it?  Maybe it is not possible in the first place?
Any ideas?  Sorry in advance, I know this probably more of a PS3 forum question, but PSN seems to be down today.

The drive will not "appear" on your desktop like a USB or FireWire drive that is connected directly to your Mac.
First, check to make sure that the drive is recognized by the Time Capsule as LaPastenague mentions
Open AirPort Utility , click on the Time Capsule, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window
You will see your Time Capsule drive....named "Data".....unless you have changed the name.....and the other drive as well.  In the example below, the Time Capsule drive is named "Backups".  Another drive....."WD Drive"....is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
Do you see both drives? If not, you need to perform the checks that LaPastenagure has mentioned above.

  • Time machine doesn't recognize external hard drive

Recently I went to the apple store to get help to switch from Mavericks to Mountain Lion (I had some problems with Mavericks). They used time machine to bring back my applications (from my external hard drive, LaCie) on the Mountain Liion software. They said my time machine/external hard drive should work the same when I got home. Now, when I go to back up my computer, time machine doesn't recognize that I've backed up my files before. In the past, when time machine was working, every time I plugged in my hard drive the icon for it would turn blue, time machine recognized it, and it would back up my files. Now, the icon for the hard drive shows up, but time machine doesn't recognize it.
    Some other things:
    - when I open my external hard drive on finder, it shows all of my previous back ups
    - I used disk utility to check my hard drive and macintosh HD - both are OK
How can I use time machine to continue backing up files? Or am I going to have to partition or erase the hard drive and start a new back up?
    Thank you in advance

nevermind! time machine suddenly recognized the disk after half an hour. sorry, I don't know how to delete this post!

  • Itunes does not recognize external hard drive

I am a dj and I have a couple of external hard drives to back up my music. Here's what happened last night and things haven't been the same since. Last night I have daisychained one exteranl hard drive with my new xternal that has a copy of all my music on it. I changed the folder to my new hard drive the other day and it was working fine. Well, last night I was working on updating some music and I didn't realize that my iBook G4 laptop wasn't plugged in so the screen went dark. I panic a bit and power downed my two hard drives without dismounting them properly. When I realized it was just the power cord I plugged it back in and I thought everything was fine. Now this morning when I try to run off of only my new xternal almost all of my library is showing that it can't be found. Now, when I plugged in an old external and daisychained it with the new one it works fine. What do I need to do so that it recognizes only the new hard drive with everything on it. I tried changing the folder in the advanced tab and it still comes up unrecognized. Please help me I have tons of gigs coming up soon and I use my itunes as a reference tool.
    Thanks,

Thanks. Realized something though...on the old computer, Windows XP had a problem (R6034) that prevented iTunes from opening or upgrading.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • IMAC won't recognize external hard drive anymore

I am running snow leopard on my IMAC with all the latest software updates. I've been using a LaCie Quadra external hard drive with time machine for backups for awhile with no problems. From the beginning is was plug in the hard drive and go, the mac recognized it. Now, suddenly, it won't. When I turn on the LaCie to back up, the icon no longer pops on the desktop. It is also not listed in the Time Machine preferences anymore. I tried to open the LaCie from Mac systems preferences and get a message with something like "64 bit cannot recognize 32 bit" I am asked to close and reopen system preferences, which would change to 32 bit. I tried that and it did not work, and a report was sent to Apple. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Thanks

    jraguseo wrote:
Thanks. I don't disconnect the drive, only turn it off with it's own power switch. According to LaCie, this should not be a problem.
No, it's not a problem for the drive, but neither is leaving it (and Time Machine) on. Most externals will "spin down" after a few minutes of activity, but even if they don't, modern drives are built to run 24/7.
Time Machine was designed to do quick hourly backups of changes, and will protect you best that way. Just leave both Time Machine and the drive on; they'll be fine.

  • MacBook with Lion will not recognize external hard drive (AMP) that was my backup for older IBook, please help

I had a IBook G4 and an external hard drive as its back up.
IBook running something like Snow Lepord, anyway
I have a Intel Macbook now with Lion, Ive been told here there is a possible confliction between the AMP external harddrive and lion.
I will say a few times I have for limited time been able to access the drive on the newer MacBook, but then Lion (I think) drops it.
    Any ideas out there?

Disk Utility sees the drive, finder/desktop doesnt.
Click on the Desktop->Finder menu->Preferences->General->Show on Desktop->HDs and ext HDs.
Mac OS Extended (journaled) what's that mean and is the format the issue here?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1604 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2355
    No, that's not the issue.

  • IMovie Won't Recognize External Hard Drive...?

    Hello,
Yesterday, I upgraded to a new Macbook Pro using OSX 10.9.4 (Mavericks) and I'm working with iMovie 10.0.2.
On my old Macbook, I had an external hard drive which held all of my raw video footage, and instead of filling my hard drive with iMovie Projects and videos, I just kept them saved on the hard drive and edited projects from that.
Theoretically, this should be possible with this newest version of iMovie, right? However, when I open iMovie, I cannot find the hard drive. It is connected to my computer, and I can see and access it on the desktop, but there is no "Devices" icon listed in iMovie. Isn't it supposed to automatically display? I have two external hard drives, both formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and I tried both of them, but why don't they display in iMovie?
Is this a strange problem or am I just completely missing something really basic........? I've looked online, and it seems like they should display automatically.
I'm stumped and am totally unfamiliar with this version of iMovie.
Thanks so much for your help!

It might be really basic, but what was the solution? It eludes me....
    == ==
Okay, quick edit, the answer is to double click on the .imovielibrary file you want to import.  I still think that is not obvious, you'd think there was something you could do inside iMovie that would work, or, that it should simply recognize it automatically...

  • Migration Assistant Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

I have a PowerPC G5 and made a bootable backup of the computer's content to an external firewire hard drive. I tested the backup to make sure that it booted and everything was fine. So, I then did a clean install of Leopard to the machine. After the computer restarted, I reconnected my external drive and it mounted fine. However, when I went to use Migration Assistant to bring over all of my applications, it would not recognize the hard drive as an option to migrate files from.
The hard drive is formatted as Apple Partition Map, and works fine as a bootable copy. Does anyone know why Migration Assistant will not recognize it?
I recently did a clean install of Leopard on my Macbook this weekend using a different external drive with a bootable backup of the drive (GUID formatted) and then used the migration assistant to move all of my files and everything worked just fine.
I can't find any reason that I shouldn't be able to get my applications through migration assistant from the external hard drive but maybe someone knows how to fix this or of a workaround.

    Very curious, indeed.
Welcome to the Apple forums where we do try to sort things out
Your delineation of the problem and comparison to your MBP is perfect.
I migrated my G5 from a second internal disk, but actually used the setup assistant when Leopard came alive.
You might see what happens if you eject your external HD and then do what you need to to connect it back (turn off/on - unplug/plug, etc.)
Are there any errors when Migration assistant runs?
It is perhaps that Spotlight is doing its thing and the drive is not available until it is indexed?
I would remove the external HD temporarily from the SpotLight indexing list and then see what happens.
I recall that there were some odd issues with external drives taking up to 1/2 hour to be recognized by Leopard, but I don't recall why.
I am not sure these things will help, but they will eliminate some of the possibilities, and when we have eliminated the probable, what is left is where the answer lies
I wonder if Leopard is confused by the external drive not being GUID?
Try this - - connect the GUID external drive to your G5 and see if Migration assistant sees it. Obviously do not migrate anything, but if you can see that one, we may have a solution.
    Keep us posted.

  • My iMac does not recognize external hard drive

My iMac does not recognize my external hard drive.  Disk utility recognizes it and a test of the hard drive does not review any error.  I use the hard drive as a back up for the time machine.  This problem comes and goes.  It comes when I turn off and turn on the computer, with the hard drive attached.
    Please help.
    Insightful

    can be this reasons
01 , you have problem with connection ? check the port if you can find any problems physically .
    02. if not try to change the cable and with connection ,
    03. may be its good idea  to check the hard drive with another mac ?(if you have )
Did you note any diference of sound  from Hard Drive ? listen to it that carefully to note some unusual sound comes when the hard drive works.
