Doing a Fresh Install on 2nd hand Mac

Hi,
I have just purchased a 2nd hand system a external seller, I want to make sure there is nothing lurking on the system that should not be there and to create my own user etc.
I have
Mid 2011 27'' MAC
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
4GB RAM
Intel i5 (Quad Core)
OS 10.6.8.
1TB hard drive
I also have an installation CD which says "MAC OS X Snow Leopard, Mac Box Set" on it however I don't really know the source of this.
So questions
1.) Is there a easy way to make sure that the mac is clean and create a new user / profile etc without doing a fresh install?
2.) Assuming no to above and I need to reinstall then how can I confirm that the CD I have is the correct/official version?
3.) What is the best way to proceed with a fresh install?
-- I'd want to backup just case anythiung went wrong with the installation, is using Superduper the best way forward here? Can I use that to create a bootable file on a external USB with other files on there?
4.) Can I create a new partition on the existing hard in the MAC and use that to create the new version  of the OS?
5.) Once I have my fresh install can I upgrade all the way through to Mavricks via updates or do I need to purchase the install disks for that?  Is it worth it?
many thanks

The disk is white and has "MAC OS X Snow Leopard, Mac Box Set replacement DVD 2Z691-6560-A" just checked the disk and it does have an install of 10.6 on it. How much of a risk do you think using this would be?  Are there many corrupt copies going around?
It sounds that you have a white retail disk.  There is no risk as such trying to use it but these disks do not have the iLife applications on them.  According to Mactracker, a 2011 27" iMac came with 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 gray installation disks (see Alberto's image) with one disk for the OSX and the other for the iLife applications.  It clearly will have the exact OSX marked on the disk.
Duplicate installation disks can be ordered from Apple Customer Service.  Have your iMac serial number ready and there is a charge.

I am more worried about attempting the fresh installation and it failing and leaving me with no system over the holidays. Thats why the backup is important. I had read on another thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10549815?searchText=Doing%20a%20Fresh%20In stall#10549815) that I would need to install iLife, iPhoto,iMovie, etc do they come on the installation disk as well or can I download them?
If you can install from the retail disk, version of Snow Leopard, you will have to purchase the iLife applications.  I think it would be less expensive if you ordered the duplicate installation disks for your iMac.
I suggest that you clone your iMac, then if the Snow Leopard retail fails or other problems occur, you should be able to revert to where you are now. Bottom line, I do think that getting the duplicate disks is your best option.
Ciao.

  • Install iLife on 2nd hand MAC Pro running 10.7.5

Hi, please forgive my ignorance, as I'm not at all tech savvy.
I've found a few threads which come close-ish to what I'm looking for, but I'm feeling a little timid and uncertain about proceeding, so I do hope some kind person can help me understand what I need to do.
The situation is - after almost 7 years, (and three hard drives!) my iMAC has yet again given up the ghost.
My husband has come home with a second hand Mac Pro, purchased refurbished, as is, from his place of work.
This is the machine I'm currently working on, having just got it all set up and net connected.
The issue is, I desperately need to have access to my iLife software, especially iPhoto, and iDVD, as I am up against a tight schedule to produce a slide show tribute for a funeral service a day an a half from now.
The Pro does not have any of these applications installed.
It was sold to us without any installation discs - I assume because it came from an office where a large number of machines would have been running on a network.
I thought, no probolem, I'll just get into the app store and pay for the downloads.
Unfortunately, the available versions require a later version of the OS.
The iMAC I owned prior - the one that just failed on me - originally came bundled with Tiger, and included the iLife apps.
I later purchased and upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I still have my tiger and Snow Leopard discs.
Is it possible to safely install my iLife applications from somewhere on my older licensed install discs, without interfering with the OS on the new (old, but new to me) MAC Pro?
If so, how do I go about this?
I'm sorry to ask such basic level questions. I think I can do this, but my experience levels are not much past total newbie, and I'm worried about messing something up and being left with no functioning machine again, right at a time when I desperately need everything working smoothly.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

    Further to the above.
After a bit of poking about, I now believe iLife may in fact have been pre-installed on the iMAC and therefore not on the install discs.
I have no problems buying new versions, if only they were compatible with my curret OS.
Likewise, I'd be happy to buy the Lion OS, or any later version comapible with this Pro, just to have a valid copy.
ALso, so that I have reinstall capability if the system goes down.
Problem is, I need the applications now, and I don't know whether any stores in my area would be open tomorrow and able to sell me the discs. I haven't really got the time for the 2 - 3 hur round trip to get to the nearest vendor that just might be open. If I had a few days up my sleeve, it wouldn't be an issue, but I have to make this slide show and create a playable DVD of it within the next 24 hours.

  • I recently bought Mac book air and was doing a fresh install of 10.7 and I erased my hard drive and now want to reinstall osx but it keeps telling me that it can't find install information for this machine and to call AppleCare.

Any one have any suggestions?? AppleCare is closed right now

    Hmmmm...
When you say OSX, which version do you want to reinstall?
Was the MacBook Air new when you bought it?  Did it originally come with Lion?  Mountain Lion?
When you say you erased your hard drive, did something go wrong while you were installing Lion?
Were you installing it from a file downloaded from the App Store, or from another source?
When you press and hold "Option" while you boot up, does "Recovery" come up as an option to boot your computer?
If so, you can reinstall Lion from the recovery part of the drive and (hopefully) everything should be fine.
Let me know if you still need a hand with your MacBook and we'll see if we can get you going again.

  • Problem doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion on replacement blank drive

After a close call in which the internal drive on my late 2009 21.5" iMac needed repairs unexpectedly, I acquired a replacement drive (WD Black 2TB) on which I planned on starting fresh with a clean install of Mountain Lion rather than cloning the existing installation that went through so many upgrades over the past 3+ years.
I now have a perfectly bootable WD Black 2TB drive attached to the USB port of the iMac. I can boot from it, use the Recovery partition if I need to.  My contacts and Safari tabs and bookmarks are synced up through icloud.  I am even able to install traditional software.  Everything appears to work fine except.... I cannot install any application acquired from the Mac App Store.
When I go to the purchased icon of the Mac App Store, all apps show as already installed.  I read several articles suggesting holding the option key when clicking on the "Installed" button, unchecking the "automatically install applications bought on other macs" etc. to no avail.  A call to Apple Care is requiring futher research.  I am now reaching out to the community for advise.
A important hint here is that, for some reason, when I boot from my fresh ML install, that OS sees the internal drive as an extension if itself, and treats all Mac App purchases there as already installed.  Using Spotlight to find any of the apps marked as Installed invariably points to the Applications folder of the Internal drive.  I have been unable to 'disable' the internal drive or unmount it.
I would rather not swap the drives until I complete a full installation of the OS and applications and data on my new WD Black 2TB drive.  But from what I can see, this appears unavoidable.  I can't believe I am the first one to run into this situation, hence my call to this community.
    Thank you for your assistance.

If it wasn't a Mac computer that originally came with either Lion or Mt Lion Pre-Installed by Apple when new you would not be able to connect to the Online Internet Recovery system. It is a Feature of the Mac EFI Firmware system. And it will only install whichever version of the Download only version of OS X that originally came on that system.
My MBP came with Lion Preinstalled. Even if I have Mt Lion installed on the hard drive the Online Internet Recovery system would always point my MBP to the Lion download as that was the original version of OS X that came on my Mac.
No real authentication needed. Since your Mac came with Mt Lion no matter what newer versionof OS X you ever install the OIRS will always point you to Mt Lion and ONLY Mt Lion.
It is something different, but not completely different, from the built in Recovery HD partition on the internal drive.
No worries as during the install of MT Lion on your SSD the installer will Recreate the Mt Lion Recovery HD partition on your SSD.

  • Leopard freshly installed = issue with Dock / .Mac synch / restarting

    Hi
I just installed Leopard and it went rather smoothly (I think!). However, when I access System Preferences via the Dock and then close it again, I cannot open/access it again.
I get an "error code -600" error message. Doing a "Force Quit" does not help and when I try to do a restart of my Mac, it seems to take forever and nothing really happens. I ran a Disk Utility on my HD and everything seems to be fine. or so it says.
    Clues anyone?
Also, since the installation, I cannot seem to sync with .Mac. It worked fine yesterday though.
Thanks for any thoughts you may have on this =)

I just installed Leopard (twice) and am having exactly the same problem. Apps that I launch will not quit -- their windows close but they continue to appear active in the Dock. When I try to launch them again I get the message, "The application xxxxx cannot be launched. -600"
What is error 600? Anyway, the machine will not restart properly but must be forced to restart. Then it all starts again. This is with the native apps -- Mail Safari Quivktime and so forth.
    Any help?

  • 2nd hand Mac Pro: what to look for? Want later models

    Hi everyone
I have a 27" iMac tha tis a couple of years old. I have outgrown the 1tb hd, and would prefer to go for a standard desktop design to make adding and changing drives easier. I want to avoid obsolence. I am not looking for a very new model, but one that is a current design. Can anyone give tips on how to determine how recent used Mac Pros i come across are?
Thanks in advance for any tips you can pass on!
    John

    Additional information for completeness:
The 2008 model and previous are Very Different from the 2009 and later. The 2009 and later can accept much more memory and that memory is substantially cheaper. The 2009 and later with the same number and nominal speed of processors approaches twice as fast in benchmarks due to architectural differences
So if you expect to do compute and memory intensive modeling, Photo, Video, or Audio editing, limit your hunt to the 2009 model and later.
If you are doing general work that does not involve large memory sizes, any model Mac Pro will work for you.

Which OS are you actually intending to use? You start out saying Vista, then wander off into XP.
Are you aware that support ends for WIN XP on 04/08/2014?
PS<> A BIOS password is usually installed to protect BIOS settings from modification by unknown person(s). It is not needed for a normal installation.

  • Ideal age of a 2nd hand Mac for purchase?

I'm in the market for a new computer. I'm currently running a rather old Windows machine. Mac's are highly desirable especially considering my profession (web designer/developer). However, the cost of a new one is out of the question. So, I was wondering what is the ideal 'age' of an iMac and/or a mac mini? I was thinking about 2-3 years old, but was wondering what you mac addicts think. I need something that will last me around 3-4 years ideally for under £400.
£400 is based off the average cost of a new Windows machine + monitor.
    Thanks!

You are very unlikely to get a 2 - 3 year old mac for £400.  The following prices are in dollars (of course) but it will give a loose guide to the drop in value percentage wise.

  • Apple id recovery from 2nd hand mac airbook

i got a macbook air off my friend which is about 4 months old. he couldn't get to grips with it so i took it off his hands. anyway there are a couple of problems:
1 - he seems to have deleted iphoto from the applications folder.
2 - he doesn't remember his apple id.
after checking the forum, it seems that i can go to the app store and reinstall iphoto using his apple id, is this correct? i've given the laptop to my daughter, if i can't do with his apple id, can i either do it using my apple id or a new one created by her?
if none of these are possible, can anybody recommend another piece of free software along the same lines as iphoto?
    thank you

i'm aware that this might sound a bit dodgy, but for the record, i swear this isn't stolen goods. my friend bought it brand new from an apple store.

  • Firefox opens, then doesn't respond. Can't reset. Fresh install doesn't fix it. Mac OSX

I was browsing the internet with Firefox when it froze, so I force quit. I open it but it immediately freezes/does the spinning wheel mouse cursor thing indefinitely, so I have to force quit it again.
I tried restarting and shutting down my Mac. Then I tried resetting Firefox, but it doesn't respond. I tried in Safe Mode, but it still immediately does the spinning wheel cursor. So then I tried doing a fresh reinstall, several times. But it still keeps having the same problem.
    Help!
Edit. I don't think it could be a problem with my add ons, seeing as I've used the same ones for years and never had this problem.
One thing I did change a few days ago, is usually I let my Firefox History store things for ages, but I thought I'd free up RAM by changing these settings. I forget which settings I changed though, possibly changed something so it deletes history and and something else after shutting down each session.

It seems I found a solution for my problem!
I went into 'Username/Library/Application Support/...' and deleted the Firefox folder with the Profile settings because it seemed to be the settings I changed that triggered the problem beforehand.
I then proceeded with trashing the application and the .dmg downloads, and doing a fresh install again. Firefox is now opening and working normally for me. (However, I do not know why changing my History settings in the first place, caused this problem.)
<u>PLEASE NOTE: if anyone else tries this, if you delete the whole folder you will lose all your saved bookmarks.</u> There is probably a folder within Profiles that you can copy and save to keep your bookmarks, but I'm not sure which one it is.

  • Does my partition structure look suitable for a fresh install of Arch?

I'm doing a fresh install of 64-bit Arch on my primary machine, but I want to make sure my partition structure is suitable for a long-term install (since ideally, I plan to only install Arch once). So far, this is what I plan to use on a 500 GB hard disk:
    /dev/sda1 - ntfs - 70 GB (dual boot with win7)
/dev/sda2 - ntfs - 100 GB (shared between linux and win7, primarily for music)
    /dev/sda3 - ext4 - 20 GB - for /
    /dev/sda4 - ext4/ReiserFS - 12GB - for /var
/dev/sda5 - ext4 - for /home (sized to include the rest of the disk except for 4-8 GB of swap)
/dev/sda6 - swap - is 8GB too large? My system has 4GB, and I heard the rule of thumb that twice the memory is good to have as swap space for use with suspend/hibernate
Since I'm setting up a separate /var partition, I have a quick related question about ReiserFS. According to the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … stem_types) ReiserFS is a good choice for /var because it works well with many small files. Is this still the case? Since ReiserFS isn't being actively developed at the moment, I want to make the best choice now so I don't need to worry about reinstalling down the road.

The mainline kernel compresses the ram data before writing it to swap since 2.6.37 [1]. I can successfully hibernate my laptop which has 4GB ram and only 1.9GB swap. Of course, only the amount of ram that is actually used by programs is written to swap, all caches and such are just dropped.

  • How to reinstall ilife in a second hand mac

Hi I found several tthreats with this problem. after reinstalling mac os lion, ilife suite is not available. If this is a second owner, with different apple id than the first one, app store will not allow them to download the apps.
The solution in the forums work in other cases: same owner reinstalling mac os and ilife, for example. Others just plainly suggest to buy them, which is neither possible, since app store does not allow you, because the mac "has" the apps already. here is the solution /thumbs up fro apple genius bar!!!
ANOTHER SOLUTION TO GET BACK ILIFE AFTER FRESH INSTALL OF MAC OS
I went to the apple store and told them exactly what i did> purchased the mac from the original owner, fresh install of Mac OS lion, ilife apps not appearing and unable to downloead because " they were assigned to another id". The woman smiled, got a hard drive with ilife suite, and installed. She said anyone could solve the problem if they had a copy of ilife in a dvd. She says this problem started when mac os  was shipped with ilife installed, but without the bundled dvd or original dmg file.
Of course, she suggested me to buy the new apps, but i declined. I could have also order a hard copy of ilife from applecare, thought. So, for those without a mac store nearby, it is a potential solution. Please note that the mac have had always the right to have the apps, so it is a legal installation.
good luck  to all! it is possible to recover the ilife.
Sorry for not putting it as a question, but i got the answers, hopefully helpful to others.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Apple doesn't sell the iLife apps on a disk any longer and Apple Care doesn't sell Apple software, the Apple Retail store does. The apps this "Apple emplyee" placed for free on your Mac are not the same versions of the apps that came preinstalled on the Mac and they are not the Mac App Store (MAS) versions. And they will not be udates by the MAS. You may be able to get updates through Software Update.
I doubt that it is a policy of Apple to have its employees installing the iLife apps from an old disk for free on 2nd hand Macs, so others trying to get this done may not be successful.

  • Fresh install

Im planning on doing a fresh install of Leopard when it arrives,
Software is not a problem as i have all my install disks and license keys.
My only concern is i dont want to loose my XP instillation on parallels, if i just copy the folder called XP in my parallels folder containing the virtual drive and stuff and just paste it back into the parallels folder after install will it still function correctly or will i need to do something else
Any help on this would be great
    many thanks

    Mule,
That's really hard to say. No one here knows yet if Parallels will function with Leopard. Your best bet is to backup everything before installing Leopard. With Mac OS X, you can backup following my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
I've read that Windows has a similar cloning software to Superduper in the software called Norton Ghost.
Mac OS X so far has not provided a "fresh install" option. See my user tip for
    installation options:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
This may change with Leopard, but until I get my hands on it, I can't say for certain.
