Doing backups while MBP is asleep

I just bought a MBP a week ago. Love it so far. Each night I just close the lid and put it to sleep. I'm trying to get some backups running at night so I have tried to schedule the laptop to wake up in the middle of the night so the backup software (SD!) can do its job.
I have been able to get the MBP to wake up on schedule but it required me to turn off requiring a password on wake from sleep.
Is there some typical solution that allows me to have backups performed during the night while the laptop is sleeping without sacrificing security?
Thanks,
Rick

OK, here's a summary after readng some postings on the SD! site.
1) SD! creates cron jobs for its scheduled jobs
2) cron jobs don't run if the computer is asleep or if the user isn't logged AND in the forefront.
3) If you require a password on wake from sleep then using the power options to wake up from sleep some time during the night is pointless since you won't be there to enter a password.
4) SD!'s cron job entries require a GUI to be opened. This will fail if the screen saver is on and requires a password.
So the only combination that appears to work, at least with SD!, is:
1) Schedule all the backups in SD! as needed.
2) Disable auto sleep.
3) Each night before leaving the computer for the night, wake it up if needed, ensure SD! is running, then start the screen saver.
This will allow cron to run and since SD! was already running the locked screen saver isn't an issue.
Optionally configure the SD! backups to sleep the computer when complete to conserve power and let the computer cool off.

Yes it stops the backup and anything else that was running.
Closing the MBP puts it to sleep.

  • My Macbook Pro I guess downloaded the new update while I was asleep and now this black screen that is speaking won't go away.

While I was asleep I believe my Macbook Pro downloaded some new software, I turned it on this morning and now I have this black screen with letter inside of it that says whatever is inside of it to me. It is very annoying as if I am online it will describe everything to me and move my screen. I am a student and cannot work or research when my computer does this. Can someone please help me figure out how to get rid of this?

  • Is it possible to delete your iCloud backup while you're restoring from it?

I was restoring my phone from an iCloud backup when all of a sudden my phone kept yelling at me that my iCloud storage was full. I mindlessly deleted the OLD backup from which I was restoring from to make room for the new one. I'm not sure if my phone was completely finished with restoring and wanted to know if it was possible to delete an iCloud backup while restoring.
    Thanks!
Edit: sorry for saying "restoring" so many times in three sentences !

Okay thank you so much! Before my restore, I only had ~0.3gb free on my phone and now I have 3gb so I thought it was because the restore didn't complete. I guess it was because not everything was backed to iCloud!

  • Backup while extending wireless

I set my timecapsule to extend my NON-Airport wireless network: I'm extending a network from a philips router that supports WDS and everything is fine.
But I cannot see the backup drive while I'm connected to the extended network.
Is it possible to enable time machine backup while extending a wireless network?
    Thank you,
Daniele (from Italy, sorry for my English)

That is likely because the TC is now invisible..
Can you see the TC at all using airport utility?? If not you cannot do it this way.. that is what I am telling you.. you cannot backup to a TC that is not on the network.
If you can see it with the airport utility make sure that hard disk is set with guest account turned on.
In finder mount the disk in the TC drive.. once you mount the drive TM will be able to find it..
Backups will take days.. and network traffic will come to a halt whilst it is backing up.

My IMAC screen went to sleep and I have it set to enter a password upon waking it up. However, my bluetooth keyboard died while it was asleep and I replaced the batteries and tried to enter my password and it is not picking up my keyboard. What can I do? I will not let me enter my password to get in and trouble shoot the keyboard. Please Help!!

I pushed in the button on the top right corner. It turns a green light on and then it goes off. I held it in until it started blinking. It blinks for a bit and then the green light turns off. I am still not able to type my password. What should I do now?

  • Data usage while I'm asleep and connected to WIFI

I just got a new Iphone 5S and also noticed my usage has gone up considerably.
I was just checking my data log for my new cycle which is only two days old and have seen significant MB of data usage in the early morning hours while I'm asleep and I'm on WIFI in my house.  The phone is next to me on the night stand.
How could this be?  I've read that sometime people leave apps running in the background that might account for that but I'm on WIFI in my house so it shouldn't be using any data at all.  I've also noticed smaller amounts of data usage registering during times of the day when I'm in my house on WIFI.

The answer from the Verizon person seems wrong. I've had various iPhones with data through them for 3 years... I just got a new phone a few weeks ago and my data usage has gone up. I have had "cellular data" turned on.... but I ALWAYS have with my other phones as well and didn't experience this issue. I have data logging in the wee hours of the morning while I'm asleep at home and it should be connecting to wifi. This seems very backward to have to switch cellular data on and off when you come and go from wireless networks. It has never been like this in the past 3 years i've been with Verizon and a smartphone. I'm really annoyed I've paid overages for a couple months now seemingly due to this weird issue that has never affected me before. @joel_vzw please provide further explanation.

  • When i want to update my ipad and i want to make backup does backup including apps

when i want to update my ipad and i want to make backup does backup including app

If you backup with iCloud only - yes your apps are included in the backup. If you backup and sync with iTunes - only your app data and documents, device settings and things like that are included in the backup.
So if you use iTunes only, you have to restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes. If you are going to update to iOS 5 now you should backup your iPad ... Or even iOS 6 when available on the 19th -  backup your iPad.

  • Backup while in Safe Boot

Can I create a bootable backup while in Safe Boot, or is that not possible

The only way I can boot the iMac is in Safe Boot. I found out from Apple (Genius Bar) today that the logic board is bad. My clone that I have now is over a week old and I thought if I could do a Smart backup with SuperDuper I'd have everything I need if I decide to get a new iMac. Or maybe I could accomplish the same thing in Target Disk Mode, providing the iMac lasts that long.

  • Cannot get TM to backup my MBP onto the iMac's TM drive

Since Leopard was released I have been using the same drive to backup my MBP. Yesterday I received my new iMac and decided that I will be using the same drive to backup my iMac.
I connected said drive to the iMac and enabled TM, no problems so far, how ever my MBP doesn't recognize my drive anymore. States that the next backup will be when the drive is connected.
I was under the impression that TM could backup to networked drives (since 10.5.3 so they claimed).
In the TM drive options, 'none' is the only available choice.
Any advice would be great. Thanks

Apple made that claim BEFORE Time Machine was officially released, but recanted upon releasing TM. Apple only supports TM over a network drive via Time Capsule. A 'newer' (Gigabit) AirPort Extreme Base Station 'can' have a HDD attached for TM to use as a backup drive, but I don't know the logistics of that.
What router are you using to connect your HDD to the iMac?

  • Does the new MBP not come with any cd's?

Does the new MBP not come with any cd's (startup discs, etc).  It does have Lion installed

Yes.  New school does not need them. There is a Recovery partition build into the new Lion OS that takes the place of DVD's.

Does backup to iTunes include all contacts/Calendars/ Notes/Reminders and Wapp Chats?

No.  They are NOT included in the backup. The music and videos must be transferred back to your PC and iTunes and should be included in the backup of your PC or Mac as well.

There was a power outage while I was asleep and my Imac was on. Now it is comatose, no sign of life no matter what I do. I pressed the power on button for over a minute and nothing happened. I unplugged the cable and changed the wall socket too but nothing happens. I hope My hard disc is not damaged and the data is not lost. How do I determine this with no technical knowledge?

  • Does backup take this long or is it frozen? (iOS 5)

I am attempting to update my iphone 4 to iOS5.  I already installed itunes 10.5, restarted it.  Plugged in my iphone 4.  It says its "backing up." However, the progress bar hasn't moved in the last 30 minutes.  My iphone says "sync in progress"  Is it frozen??  Does backup usually take this long?  This is the second time I have tried this.  last time, I tried clicking the "x" to stop the backup process, but nothing happened for the next 40 minutes.  Then I tried  "slide to cancel" on my iphone, got to the home screen, but itunes said it was still backing up!  So this is my second time trying this.  Please help! What's wrong? What can I do to fix it?

I just exported a self-contained QT file without converting it to reduce the size and it only took maybe 5 minutes if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, the file size was 13 gigs. Too big for a DVD<<</div>
Of course it's too big for DVD. DVD-Video is highly compressed MPEG-2. Take you self-contained movie and use Compressor to encode the file into MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio, then import those files into DVD-SP for authoring.
    - OR -
Import the self-contained movie into DVD-SP directly and let it do the encoding after you've authored the disc.
    - OR -
Import the self-contained movie into iDVD and let it do the encoding/authoring with it's consumerish one-button approach.
Am I going about it correctly and just need to have patience? Or is there a more efficient means?<<</div>
Patience is always a good thing, ESPECIALLY when rendering or encoding an 80 minute video from one format to another. But what you really need is a better understanding of the DVD creation process; it isn't as simple as exporting from FCP.
