Dolby Digital 5.1 Question

I used to have an Apple TV (Gen 1) that I streamed my ripped DVD collection to. I had create the files using Handbrake (AC3 Passthrough). Then, after a "patch" by Apple the Dolby Digital stopped working. Fed up, I sold the Apple TV in frustration.
Some time has passed and I've recently gotten an iPad 2 and I really like the potential of AirPlay. I am considering picking up the new Apple TV but only if I'll be able to play files with AC3 included. Can the new Apple TV play AC3 files either through the HDMI cable (preferably) or the optical cable?

The apple tv seems to be notoriously iffy about passing through Dolby Digital from non-iTunes bought material.
Since getting the ATV2 I have not been able to get it to work as it used to in the ATV1.
First problem was that you had to play a iTunes bought movie with DD which would then allow passthru to happen on all ripped material as well... weird but at least a work around. If you tried playing ripped material (from handbrake for instance) it would just fail unless you turn DD off or play an iTunes movie with DD first.
This week the ATV2 did another update and now even with DD on auto doesn't work for iTunes bought material. You have to explicitly turn it on for DD to work at all but then none of the ripped material will play any audio at all if it has a DD track.
Turn it on and iTunes will passthru DD from iTunes movies but ripped material won't. Turn it to auto and nothing with passthru DD. Turn it off and everything plays on PCM from AAC track (as expected)...
Seems a bit like we are going backwards here.
I'm starting to think Apple don't have any regression testing for this feature at all.
I read in another thread that apparently the trick is to set the DD track as disabled in the mp4 container and then it will work. I don't see why this is needed at all and seems very picky on the software's side. I still need to investigate this to see if it's true, but most tools out there will not do this and thus the material won't play on the ATV2 in surround. It a real bummer as that is my main reason for having it in the first place.
90% of my material is ripped DVD's and Blu-rays. I am forced to watch them all in stereo now or fall back to a DVD player...

  • Question about Dolby Digital 5.1 in Soundtrack Pro 3

    Hi folks,
I am pretty confused in regards to using Soundtrack Pro 3 to create and export a AC-3 dolby digital 5.1 file to be used in burning a Blu Ray DVD using Toast Titanium 11. I admit that overall I am somewhat Final Cut Studio savy but for the life of me I cannot find reliable and understandable tutorials re: the dolby digital thing. I am hoping that there are people out there who will be patient with my admitted ignorance
So, what I am working on?
107 minute feature documentary film edited using FCP 7 with 65 tracks of audio mixed down (using STP3) to six (1 & 2 dedicated to Voice, 3 & 4 dedicated to sfx and ambient sounds, 5 & 6 dedicated to music.)
What do I want to do?
My film is going be to be screened at a festival next month and so I want to burn a blu ray disc (using Toast Titanium 11) with AC-3 Dolby digital 5.1 audio as apposed to 2 channel stereo.
    What I don't understand?
I'm not entirely sure how the Dolby 5.1 export using STP3 works. My questions are:
Will it take a 2 channel stereo final mix and convert and export it so that it will be a Dolby Digital? If so, what about the 6 channels of audio that I mentioned before. Is it better to mix those 6 down to 2 before doing the  Dolby 5.1 export?
If so, what if the theatre equipment (or any home dvd player) is not able to play Dolby 5.1? Will it then play the Blu Ray in 2 channel stereo or will there be issues?
Is there a 'standard' Dolby Digital setup when having to choose the 'Audio Coding Mode?'
    And/or:
What settings would you suggest for very high quality Blu Ray export?
Anyways, I know there is a helluva lot of questions there but I obviously wanna get this right. Huge thanks in advance to any advice/suggestions you can give.
    Cheers!

    HI,
    briefly from what comes to mind is;
your tracks need to be assigned via the Surround Sound Panner options, either or both in the tracks and submixes.  Read about Surround Sound in Soundtrack Pro and also the effect options via the sound design reverberation. (The latter can create surround from a stereo submix as well )
The next chapter is the export option.  FILE>EXPORT
The master can be optionally exported in Dolby surround AC-3 with a number of options you need to set in this window.
Then burning is the next chapter. I trust Toast can manage but have not tried yet.
When burning to Blue Ray one actually should use full resolution PCM files  WAV format for highest quality
Audio Surround Sound. The Export then would need to be uncompressed from your final STP mix in single mono files (which is an option in STP ) and then imported into a special burning program.....
THese are my 2 cents in general.

  • Question for P6N SLI Platinum User : Does ALC888 support Dolby Digital Encoding?

Hello to all P6N SLI Platinum users here,
I have one question regarding Dolby Digital Encoding support on this motherboard. By default, ALC888 does not support Dolby Digital Encoding. But I am still curious. Can you please check on your motherboard, does it support Dolby Digital encoding or DTS Live Connect output to SPDIF? (You may check it by Realtek HD Audio Manager control panel. If there exist such setting option, it means it does support.)
The reason I ask this is I am thinking to switch from 975X Platinum to this board, I am unable to try this myself here as it requires me to reinstall my OS in order to load to WinXP
    Thanks in advance.

    have a look here:
    http://en.allexperts.com/e/d/do/dolby_digital.htm
according to info there its support Dolby Digital Live

  • Questions to a moderator: How to enable true Dolby Digital So

Hallo,I wish to ask you directly, because I find no answers in all forums. That?s clear how to enable CMMS, but is it necessary to activate CMMS for using Dolby Digital Sound with 5. speakers? Because my Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS has no Dolby Digital Sound. When I am testing the speakers with the Soundbalster Testing all fi've and Subspeaker are ok. But when I hear a DVD with definitly Dolby Digital Decoding only the two Frontspeakers are working. Previously when I activate CMMS all speakers gets sound, but not Dolby Digital? This is simulated 3D Sound, isn?t it ?
    Help me, please.miutti

    Miutti,
Make sure that your DVD software has it's sound options set to SPDIF output, otherwise it may try to decode the Dolby Digital sound itself (which could result in 2. output if it is improperly setup). Also make sure that your Audigy 2 ZS has its decoder set to "use installed decoder" on the decoder tab from device settings. Device settings is found in Audio HQ (start/programs/creative/SB Audigy 2 ZS/Audio HQ). CMSS does not have an effect on Dolby Digital decoding.

  • Question for Dolby Digital and

Hello. I have a SoundBlaster Platinum soundcard,DDTS-00 Decoder and GigaWorks S750 speakers and I have a problem when seeing movies from my PC.When I use the speakers with Playstation2 with optical cable when the movie has Dolby Digital or DTS sound the option on the decoder turns on that shows the sound mode. When I'm using the speakers with PC and I connect them with coaxial or optical cable and I choose from the sound menu of the DVD program (Cyberlink DVD)what sound I want the option on sound mode of the Creative decoder doen't change. What is going on?Could you tell me what to do?I think that I hear Dolby Surround and not Dolby Digital Neo:6 and DTS:ES. Thank you.Message Edited by pangef on 07-8-2006 06:38 AM

With your PC, set it up to S/PDIF. This way it by passed all software decoding and leaves it to your speakers .
IMHO, if people have speakers that can decode DD 5./DTS then use S/PDIF all the way
I have tested useing software decoders and then using S/PDIF pass through and found the sound is better via S/PDIF.
    Hope that hel

    Hi,
    my Lenovo G510 has Windows 8.1 64-bit.
In the system menue of Hardware and Sound I can see two entries:
    1) Dolby Digital Plus Advanced Audio
    2) Dolby Digital Plus Advanced Audio (32-bit)
Clicking on the first entry a control panel appears. Does this mean that Dolby Digital Plus Advanced Audio is always running in the backround? There is no entry in the systray.
Clicking on the second entry this error message appears:
Your current installed version is 7.3.2.2 of the Dolby Digital Plus audio driver. The software needs the driver version 7.5.1.1. Installe a correct combination of driver and software.
What to do with this? I searched for a solution and drivers but couldn´t find anything.

  • ITunes rented movie not outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 audio

The problem with the downloaded movie (Real Steel HD) is
that the Dolby Digital 5.1 (English) audio is not being putput. The movie is only playing back in
"stereo" mode. When playing back on iTunes there are four audio tracks
    to choose from:
    1. English 1 (This plays stereo)
    2. English 2 (NO SOUND) - I believe this should be the Dolby Digital track
    3. French (This plays stereo)
    4. Spanish (This plays stereo)
Neither of the two English tracks is outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.
I have confirmed that my PC is capable of up to 7.1 surround sound and
my A/V receiver is capable of even more. I have updated both the ATI
Radeon 4500 driver and the Realtek drivers. I have tested and
confirmed that my PC is capable of  outputting sound to all 5 of my
speakers and my subwoofer, HOWEVER when playing back the rented movie
in iTunes the maximum audio is stereo. I have the latest version of
iTunes installed, so that shouldn't be the problem.
I have also purchased another movie advertised as Dolby Digital 5.1
audio (The Bourne Supremecy HD) but I am afraid to begin my 24-hour
viewing period because of these audio problems being unresolved.
My question is: Are there known issues of movies purchased on iTunes
and played back on a Windows 7 PC not playing the Dolby Digital
tracks? If so, is there a fix for this via an iTunes settings change
    or a Windows update patch?
From the four audio tracks that I listed above, I believe track 2 is
the Dolby Digital track, yet there is NO SOUND when that track is
    selected.
Please help, as this is pretty frustrating when your movie night is ruined for the family especially after you've paid for and waited for the movie to download.

I managed to get my DD tracks working.
First had to update itunes to the latest version (10.7.0.21) to get rid of the out of sync sound problem
Then updated the realtek driver. There was an update directly in the realtek website (mine is the HD Audio): http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24& Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
After all that. I tunes wasn't allowing anymore to select the Doubly Digital 5.1 tracks (an improvement).
Then went to the windows properties for the realtek optical output and checked both options to allow application exclusive access and to have priority (http://dailykermit.wordpress.com/2009/09/11/windows-7-exclusive-device-control/)
After all this, I was able to enjoy my rental

  • Dolby Home Theater V4 changed to Dolby Digital Plus after Realtek Audio Driver update Windows 8.1

Hi,I'm now using Ideapad Z510. After upgraded to Windows 8.1. I'd went to the Lenovo website searching for new driver update.
But, after i install the "Realtek Audio Driver 6.0.1.7023", the "Dolby Home Theater V4" is not running(audio sound not playing through). And, the "Dolby Digital Plus" is running instead of "Dolby Home Theater V4".
Then, when I try to reinstall the older version "Realtek Audio Driver 6.0.1.6954" from Lenovo website, the "Dolby Home Theater V4" is running again.
Truly, the "Dolby Digital Plus"'s sound is crisper and louder than "Dolby Home Theater V4". But the sound of "Dolby Home Theater V4" has more bass and more function (like Graphic Equalizer, more Intelligent Equalizer etc.).
Is this an update or what?
What should I choose? The newer driver (for Windows 8.1) or older driver (for Dolby Home Theater V4)?  Thanks. (confused now) @@

    Hi all
Could you try out DAA or DHTLightweight from my link and just install the Dolby software without overriding your Realtek Driver? I am not sure whether would it work, but worth a try. I have tried on Y460, W520 and G560 with great experience.
If the older Dolby software does not work with your existing Realtek driver, you could install the DAA or DHTLightweight with their driver to overwrite and see how it goes.
    Thank You

  • Does the digital optical input recognise Dolby Digital?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help clarify something for me. I have an Astro Gaming A30 Audio System that I use when playing my PS3. It's a gaming headset with pinpoint-accurate 7.1 Dolby and Dolby Headphone surround sound. Here's a link to the web page if you want to know more about it - http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/80/A30-Audio-System/.
Now, at the moment I have the PS3 connected directly to the A30 Audio System with a digital optical cable. In the PS3 settings, I have it set to output Dolby Digital 5.1 as this is the format that the A30 Audio System uses. This setting is important because it's what gives me the surround sound in my headphones. Ok, we're almost at my question...
Recently, I've been thinking of buying a capture card so I can record my game plays and upload them to YouTube. The capture card that I'm thinking of getting is the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro. Here's a link to the web page - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/.
My question is - since there is no output on the A30 Audio System, and therefore no way to route the sound into my Mac from it, I need to first send the sound from the PS3 into the Mac (for recording) and then re-send the sound from the Mac into the Astro A30s (for listening). If I do this, will I lose the Dolby Digital format that was originally output from the PS3? I don't mind recording the audio in stereo, but it's essential that the Dolby Digital sound goes to the Astro A30s. Otherwise I won't have proper surround sound. And if you went to the website, you would have noticed that they're pretty expensive. So playing in surround sound is very important to me, as I paid top dollar for them.
Anyway, if you can clarify that for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Sure there's a difference it depends completely on the original sample rate of the audio recorded otherwise the best built in audio can do is 48/24, so trying to go out at 96 will force resampling[without a capable app running]. But in terms of resampling, if you use the card then you should be able to use 96/32.
Have you properly adjusted AMS settings; so that the card is in Properties at 96? Still the only governing factor there is whatever software governs the PCI card. I don't get the problem you're having here, what is the connection to the machine, optical?

  • Decode Dolby Digital from optical inpu

    Hi,
I bought SB X-Fi Extreme Audio PCIE. I know it'sdoesn't have?any hardware supported features, but maybe there is some?software way to decode Dolby Digital send throught optical cable to SB input ?
Second question - which SB model should I buy to get this working ?

I don't think the Audigy 2 NX has decoding hardware onboard, it uses a driver based decoder therfore all decoding is done by the computer. The Extigy is different, it has and actual onboard decoder so it can be used as a stand-alone Dolby Digital decoder, not requiring a computer to operate. I'm not sure whether the NX can decode AC3 from an external source or if it is limited to decoding signals originating from the computer (i.e DVD or AC3 file).

  • Production Premium 4-Making Dolby Digital 5.1 Discs in Encore

    Greetings,
I am a longtime Photoshop and now Lightroom user but have done my video editing in another product for years.
I moved to the Creative suite and Production Premium and Encore workflow and am trying to transition.
After 2 exceedingly frustrating Adobe support calls I gave up.
I have 2 questions....one I answered myself.  It appears that to create a Dolby Digital 5.1 SD DVD or Blu-Ray disc you need to purchase an additional add-on codec to the tune of $200.  Don't like it (as my $200 full package video editor includes it) but if true, than it is what it is. I saw some previous posts like this but then there were conflicts.
Second question. Exactly what do I have to purchase (are some better than others) and then how does it affect the disc making process in encore.  Or the editing process in Prod Premium? Is there a tutorial or something?
I found the encor FAQ to not be very helpful and possibilty mis-leading.  It makes it seem that this is an ADVANTAGE.
Does Encore DVD 2.0 support Dolby® Digital 5.1?
A: Yes, Encore DVD allows you to create DVDs containing Dolby Digital 5.1 content. However, Dolby Digital 5.1 content must be created in another application. The integrated Dolby Digiin audio reproduction, Encore DVD 2.0 supports the DTS audio format, in addition to the Dolby Digital format supported in earlier versions. Now, regardless of which of these two popular formats you prefer, creating the final results you want is easy with Adobe Encore DVD 2.0.
So Production premium supports a 5.1 workflow....the integration with Encore is touted....but I have to go OUTSIDE the suite to make a 5.1 audio disc that my $200 NLE currently can do?
Or is the plugin just an additional cost that is transparent....you push the button and it encodes....
Finally, for clarification, I do not try to import or maintain a 5.1 stream to a camera or anything.  I just utilize the 5.1 channels to create a nice dialogue and music ambient mix.  I put what I want in each channel. Pr Prem seems to support this.  I just want it to burn to SD and BD with 5.1.
    Thanks for any help!
    BJBBJB1

As I'm undertanding (sorry but being italian, I've sometimes problems in translation) I hope this will help:
-In PP, you import all your clips (audio or not) and, of course your dolby files (example .ac3)
-when everything is done (effects, transitions, etc.), PP'll encode your project giving you one customed video (as you wish) and your dolby audio file.
If you have put in this project some stereo audio file, PP will give you anyway a Dolby encoded file (it will be a "pseudo" dolby).
    - Now you can:
    - import them in Encore as assets dragging them in the timeline later
-import them as timeline, so you'll already find them in the new timeline
-use DinamicLink from Encore (File\Project\DinamicLink\import a Premiere project) as Jeff says
If you already have a dolby audio file imported in Encore, you'll choose the audio option "do not Trascode" so the audio project you've created in PP will not be modified and you'll output a brand new Dolby audio file.
    Hope this will help you
Sorry in advance if I missed any in translation

  • Encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in MP4 files using AC3 pass-through

Looking for an application that will encode Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in an .mp4 container using AC3 pass-through for playing videos with surround sound on ATV.
Handbrake is out of the question because I run Tiger. The Tiger version cannot do AC3 pass-through.
Visual Hub is no longer available.
    Any other options?

You may need Apple's MPEG2 QT plugin as well for MPEGStreamclip.
Also, consider if running windows in parallels/Boot Camp etc that there's a windows version, and possibly a linux version.
VisualHub code was released open source - Google FilRedux and PunyVid (iSquint derivative). Not tried either though.

  • Dolby Digital 5.1

    Hi,
I have movie clips that were shot with a Sony HD handycam in Dolby 5.1 audio. Will I be able with Adobe Element 10 to output this to a blu-ray in Dolby Digital 5.1 audio?
    Thanks.

    Airborne,
The output was the part of the question, that I needed clarification on too. I knew that through PrE 9, the output would be a 2-channel (stereo) mixdown, and Steve verified that PrE 10 was no different, regarding the output (Export/Share). However, as it has been for a few versions, PrE can easily Import DD 5.1 SS for editing. It is the Encoding to DD 5.1 SS, that is the limitation.
Now, there are ways around that, but then one must leave PrE to do the final output, and to work effective with DD 5.1 SS, that would be pretty early in the editing process. Minnetonka Audio offers a stand-alone DD 5.1 SS Encoder, to get the Audio Stream in DD 5.1 SS AC3.
The reason that one needs to leave PrE early is that it does not offer full editing in DD 5.1 SS, like PrPro does. Instead, one would use a program, like Adobe Audtion, with Multi-track editing. It can output to six discrete Audio Streams, each in a separate 1-channel file. One would then use a stand-alone Encoder to get all six into a DD AC3 file.
On a sidenote: recording good 5.1 SS Audio is really tough. Many cameras that allow it, have mics placed very close together, but just pointing in different directions, while some do processing of a 2-channel Audio Stream, to create a faux 5.1 SS. In the first case, those multiple mics usually pick up a lot of Audio, that one will find not very usable, such as the camera operator's clothes rubbing together. To record true 5.1 SS, one needs 5 well-placed mics (the LFE channel is usually not recorded on location, but separated out, or added, in studio), The mics will be very narrow band, and run through a multi-channel mixer, so that the feed from each can be adjusted, easily. The result will be 5 discrete Audio Streams, one in each of 5 separate Audio files. The sound persons involved will need to be well-versed in 5.1 SS recording, and then the editor will need to be trained, as well. It is not as easy as just having a bunch of mics, pointed in different directions. It is the domain of skilled professionals, with proper and specialized equipment.
Offering DD 5.1 SS in-camera is more of a marketing tool, IMHO, and most users of such cameras actually fight the 5.1 SS, giving up on it, after just a bit.
Also, editing 5.1 SS is an art, even with the proper software, such as PrPro w/ the optional Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD 5.1 SS Encoder plug-in. There are so many considerations, beyond just stereo Audio.
If you are really determined to edit 5.1 SS, and output to DD 5.1 SS for DVD's, or BD's, I have several books that will prove useful.
I do most Projects in DD 5.1 SS, with PrPro and the SurCode Encoder plug-in. Most are really faux 5.1 SS, that I create in the studio, though some do start with 5 discrete Audio files, recorded by a professional sound crew, and furnished to me as separate WAV files. These Projects are edited in 5.1 SS, and then I output to DD 5.1 SS AC3's (one of the two formats, that can be used as the Primary Audio Source in DVD/BD)*. Often, the client will want DTS (cannot be Primary, and must be Supplemental Audio only). That (like DD Pro-Logic, etc.) must also be output with a separate Encoder (I use the SurCode DTS Encoder, which is a stand-alone, and not plug-in, like their DD 5.1 SS), and I also have to work on the Audio in Audition (in my workflow), outputting to six discrete Audio files, before Encoding. This is a multi-step, involved workflow, but produces great results.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * In NTSC DVD, only PCM/WAV, or DD AC3 can be used for the Primary Audio Stream, where with PAL, MPEG Audio is optional, though really falling out of favor. Besides those Primary Audio Streams, many others can be used on DVD, but MUST be Supplemental, and are accessed only via a Menu, or from the remote's Audio button.

  • Dolby Digital or Surcode Dolby Digital

Hello, i'm new here, have a question, don't know if it's been asked before, but here it goes:
Is there any big difference between Dolby Digital and Surcode Dolby Digital when you encode on Media Enconder, if i just encode with the regular Dolby Digital will it be 5.1? is it really a noticeable difference from the Surcode?

    Jeff,
Thank you for the info. If I understood everything, then one would need a SurCode DD 5.1 SS plug-in specific to Encore too.
Also, as Encore only has passthrough capabilities for DD 5.1 SS, and it cannot be monitored there, it would also seem that Encore would have to be rewritten in the Preview module, to accommodate the 5.1 SS playback.
With the "old-fashioned" method, one could easily monitor their DD 5.1 SS in PrPro, just not once it is Imported (AC3 DD 5.1 SS) into Encore, though it will write to DVD/BD.
Now, one other consideration - $. The Minnetonka SurCode plug-in for PrPro prices out with little profit for Minnetonka. They pay enough in licensing fees to Dolby Labs, that even a second license is not discounted beyond the Adobe-user discount. Then, the user would have to acquire a separate plug-in for En, at about another US$250. I wonder how many would shell out a possible total of US$500 to use ADL for DD 5.1 SS, even if it WAS available?
Until such time, we can just Export/Import and go get that cup of coffee! At least for US$250, we do have a workflow, albeit one with a few more steps.
    Appreciated,
    Hunt
PS - all of a sudden ADL between PrPro & En does not temp me quite so much.
