Dolby Digital over HDMI failure

I am connected to my Onkyo AV receiver through HDMI and when I first turn my receiver on it displays Dolby Digital but as soon as I start netflix DD goes away. I have tried setting DD "on" and "auto" in apple tv settings.  Anyone having any luck with DD?

Ok... I found out that the dolby digital over HDMI issue is no fault of AppleTV. Most content from Netflix is not broadcast in Dolby.  A good movie that is in DD is "The Warriors Way". You'll even see the Dolby icon at the main movie menu.

  • Dolby digital through HDMI

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with retina display. I'm trying to get Dolby digital through the hdmi port and after comparing some media attached to my receiver the same movie was Dolby digital on my WDTV and using the same cable was stereo connected to my MacBook Pro.
I'm not sure if its a setting or an atypical apple thing like they did with the digital stereo connection in headphone jack using a mini fiber optic cable (phoslink).
I suppose if I want to hear Dolby digital out of my Mac,  I wondering if I need a thunderbolt to hdmi to get what I want. Dolby digital through HDMI is an industry standard!

After talking to three levels of support, I finally was told the new Macbook Pros (with Retina display) are NOT capable of producing Dolby digital through the HDMI port.  They only do digital stereo.
In order to produce up to 8 channels of Dolby digital surround sound you must use an additional toslink cable, which is a mini fiber optic, found cheap at Monoprice!
Just for the record, the expensive Thundebolt to HDMI or mini Display port to HDMI only do stereo too.  Not a big deal for most, but upsetting if you're expecting a HDMI to function as it does in any other piece of equiptment!!

  • Dolby digital in itunes over hdmi for 7770

I just bought a amd sapphire 7770 and now itunes won't output dolby digital over hdmi but other programs will. I am using the latest drivers and software, how do I fix this?

Hi  I am having the same problem but I can't get any sound from the surround on sky.  I have tried all sorts of combinations including what you have put on this forum. Is there only certain channels on sky that now produce the dolby digital.  On my prev tv I had surround sound with all of the channels.  This new tv is a 3D smart tv. Thanks any help would be much appreciated.

  • Dolby Digital Settings

With my system, if Dolby Digital is set to "On" in settings, I don't get any sound at all from Rented or Purchased movies from iTunes - however, I do get sound from Netflix, Youtube, iTunes music, etc.
Sound works in iTunes material if Dolby Digital is set to "Off" or "Auto."
I'm worried, however, that if a Movie is Streaming with Dolby Digital, the sound should be working when the Audio Setting is "On."  Am I just getting stereo audio if the Dolby Digital setting is "Auto?"
Currently I am only running the HDMI Cable to the TV - no Optical Audio out or anything.

I think it's probably similar to my issue here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17926593#17926593
Rentals generally have either 1 or 2 audio tracks.
The first is stereo (occasionally mono), the second is the dolby digital surround.
I connect to the TV via HDMI and to the surround processor via optical.
In the past I'm sure I've managed to have sound from the TV (HDMI) or surround processor (optical Dolby Digital simultaneously).
I think what currently happens is this:
AppleTV 'talks' to the HDMI device and ascertains what it can support.  Most TVs will not be able to decode Dolby Digital over HDMI.  Receivers/amps with DD capability will.
So when the TV is connected via HDMI, and DD is set to off or Auto the TV gets the stereo feed (Auto selecting stereo as TV can't handle DD).
If however DD is set to On this forces DD through HDMI but the TV doesn't know what to do with it.
So in my situation I can either have it set for stereo audio over HDMI (Off or Auto) and optical, or DD over both (DD set to On.
Clearly I want the stereo track to go to the TV over HDMI and DD over optical (falling back to stereo if no DD track) so I don't have to fiddle in Settings each time I choose to listen through TV vs surround system.

  • Audigy Platinum gives Dolby Pro Logic, but not Dolby Digital with

I'm trying to get my Audigy Platinum (the original) to output dolby digital over the SPDIF output as a bitstream instead of PCM.
I've tried everything I've read on the forums and elsewhere (that's how I got it to the point of working this far).
Stereo playing wav files etc is ok.
Playing a DVD thru Windows media player gives surround, but in Dolby ProLogic, not DD.
Playing a DVD with PowerDVD gives no sound via digital
Playing a DVD via Video Lan Player (VLC) gives either no sound or stereo via digital.
Ultimate goal here is to play HD content (Transport Streams recorded from HD cable box) with the Dolby 5. soundtrack.
Is the Audigy going to work here or do I need to move to another solution like Turtle Beach Dolby Digital Li've?
    Thanks,
    Doug

I Kind of have to give in to that. However if the bitrate is to low, any decent receiver won't give you anything but Dolby prologic II
How can you kind of agree and then repeat the same incorrect statement you did before ?
If the audio track has 5.1, it doesn't matter how low the bitrate is, one should expect to get 5.1 from the receiver.
You are of course correct about the superior quality of audio from a blu-ray disc, it is however fairly meaningless if you can't actually tell the difference which a large percentage of the population can't.
Likewise, even if you are able to tell the difference, one may not wish to invest the sort of money it requires to be able to hear that difference.
And also similarly, one may feel that the benefit of not having to leave your home to get the blu-ray disc, not having to organise and store the disc or return it later and not having to pay through the nose for it, all outweigh any benefit a small and often undetectable improvement in quality might make.
Horses for courses, if you want your improved quality thyen consider another device, if you want ease of use, an intuitive user experience and instant gratification, then the Apple TV is ideal.

  • Set Dolby Digital for optical only, not HDMI?

Just wondering if there's a way to set the ATV2 to output Dolby Digital only over optical but not over HDMI? My TV doesn't support DD but (obviously) my 5.1 receiver does. If I leave the setting on "Auto" it just sends a stereo signal to both HDMI and optical, but if I turn it on to "On" then it works via optical but not over HDMI since the TV can't understand it.

I set up my TV as a monitor only and route all sound directly via optical to my receiver. I then muted my TV, and control sound via the receiver.

  • I would like to connect my Apple TV to my receiver using an HDMI cable and pass thru dolby digital. I do not have optical inputs on my receiver.

I want to connect my Apple TV to my receiver using an HDMI cable. This should allow me to pass thru high definition video and simultaneously decode Dolby Digital material with an HDMI connection from my receiver to my TV without the use of an optical cable (my receiver does not have an optical input). I am unable to decode 5.1 material and don't understand why this is not working. In the audio setting I have Dolby Digital output turned on.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Are you sure the content you are playing has Dolby Digital.

  • P7NGM-digital : audio over HDMI ?

    Hello,
I read elsewhere that for this board, P7NGM-digital, audio over HDMI was not possible ?
    Is it true ?
As it is not working for me.

Problem solved. Uninstalled all windows updates and display drivers. Reinstalled windows updates in groups of no more than 5 at a time, restarting after each group. Installed latest Intel display driver, restarted. Works like a charm now.

  • What settings need to be adjusted to send out Dolby digital ,DTS from inputs such as Netflix to the video output via an adaptor to HDMI?

Hi. I can only stream picture and PCM out of my Mac BookPro. What settings need to be adjusted to output Dolby Digital or DTS to an HDMI adaptor had thence onto my AV Processor?

The Audio Midi Setup utility may need to have its settings updated.
That's if you have the right adapter:

  • No audio via HDMI when Dolby Digital set to 'On'

I've just discovered that, to get my ATV2 to output 5:1, I have to switch the Dolby Digital setting from 'Auto' to 'On'. This doesn't make much sense of 'Auto'.
Also, when I switch DD to 'On', while I do get a 5:1 stream from the optical output, I get no audio from the HDMI connection. Is there some logic to this that escapes me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve  = : ^ )

I recently upgraded from the 2nd last generation Apple TV (which only ouput up to 720P) to the latest generation.  I cannot get ANY 5.1 audio output with the latest generation, but it was working fine with the older model.
This is completely frustrating and a joke.
I have a Denon 3808 receiver, which was brand new in 2007.  The fact that the new Apple TV won't 'talk' to this receiver properly is completely unacceptable.
I have tried both HDMI and optical outputs, and have tried all combinations of Auto/On and Auto/16 bit for the sounds settings on the Apple TV.
Anyone been able to make it work with this receiver?
    Thanks

  • Dolby Digital Audo Setting -- Need a setting that just works!

Can anyone provide info about the dolby digital (DD) AUTO setting - and what it is supposed to accomplish?
Auto (the default) limits output to stereo via HDMI, and 2 channel PCM via the optical output. That just doesn't seem like much of an "automatic" setting to me.
When set ON - content encoded with DD does get properly sent out the optical cable but at the expense of the stereo feed to the HDMI port. And, this can be really confusing to a casual or novice user, especially if the user had been watching content with just the TV speakers active. If a new movie with DD encoding starts, the user gets no audio at all. And there are times when audio output from the TV is fine, and the power from the audio receiver is not needed.
I believe Apple should enable the stereo feed via HDMI - AND - output a digital feed via the optical cable. It doesn't matter if this is the ON or the AUTO setting, but one of these should "just work".
I'm really not looking forward to having to toggle this setting depending on the content I'm viewing.
I'd appreciate any helpful info - words of wisdom - even blank stares!
    Thanks in advance
    JD

Ok I think I understand how it works now. Auto won't send 5.1 if one of the components connected (like a TV) does not support 5.1. So for instance if you connect your HDTV with HDMI and use optical to a 5.1 receiver, you'll get stereo on both because the TV does not support 5.1. Auto on the Apple TV basically uses the lowest common denominator that allows both to output the same thing at the same time.
However, if you switch it to On in that setup, only the optical cable will get sound and it will be in 5.1 because it's the only output connected to a 5.1 capable device, your receiver.
However, the optimal connection method is to just connect your Apple TV with HDMI directly to a receiver with HDMI inputs. That way, Auto allows the 5.1 sound over the HDMI cable to your receiver and the receiver sends the video to the TV over its HDMI output cable.

  • Dolby Digital dropouts on Apple TV

I have the latest model ATV connected via HDMI to an Arcam receiver which can decode Dolby Digital via that cable. The ATV is connected to my network via ethernet but I get regular dropouts of DD sound – the sound disappears for a second or two and the amp shows a message '3/2.1 - EX off'.
This happens on Streaming movies over Netflix or playing iTunes content from my mac.
The file is not at fault as replaying it will often have the sound dropping out at different points in the movie and earlier dropouts will usually play normally. Itunes was downloading in the background but would this affect replaying of a movie file or the straeming of a netflix movie?

Probably not the case but do check all you speaker cables are secured properly - I once had random dropouts and one of the the centre speaker cables had come partially loose and a few strands were intermittently shorting with the counterpart causing the amp to shut down audio momentarily.
Personally I'd try a different HDMI input or cable if the Arcam has a separate input.

  • Macmini 2010 sound problem over hdmi

Hi, my name is Diego im from Argentina, well i have a problem with my macmini 2010 unibody, i have set up the mini over hdmi in to my receiver ( yamaha 663 ) and hdmi out to my LCDTV, i set up in sound properties HDMI output ok all is fine but if i am listening music in itunes and turn off the tv the signal is off to receiver and the music sounds in the built in speaker of the mac mini, any idea to disable this speakers o built sound card ? i want to passtrough over hdmi with the TV off, thanks to all best regards, Diego.-

I still get daleks too from time to time if I try to use 1080i with Dolby Digital into a Sony Bravia.
The BT Vision box HDMI is known to be flaky, though it sounds like you've got an extreme example of the problem with the Tosh.
It's possible to improve things a bit by using an HDMI extender to recondition the signal before it enters the TV. It might be worth a try. Try http://www.hdcable.co.uk/

  • Request for THE dolby digital answer from Apple

My old set up was component video and optical into AV reciever. All worked well, HD movies had DD 5.1 soundtrack.
Now my new HDMI set up doesn't seem to send 5.1 across.
    1. I have dolby digital set to on
    2. I played a known DD HD film 'In Bruges' but no matter what could not pick up DD 5.1 via HDMI, my AV reciever Sony 2400ES (brand new model) just piccks up stereo
    3. The soundtrack worked beautifully when sent via optical in full DD 5.1
    4. I tried to select the 5.1 audio track via play/pause button which seemed like a great solution just in case both stereo and DD 5.1 were being sent via hdmi and confusing amp, but no selection option exists.
what worries me is the lack of response (that I can find) from apple on what as usual seems to be a huge amount of postings on this subject.
What would be handy Apple are:
    1. A FREE dolby digital 5.1 movie/tv episode to 'play with' on with a selectable soundtrack option to allow you to check every option on your home cinema set-up without wasting £4-£5 every 48hrs. And I know the start up movie is said to be 5.1 but it lasts for a few seconds!!
    2. A definitive answer on this issue
    3. A difinitive LIST of movies and their soundtrack options, why does it take the pre buying screen to confirm/deny that the HD movie is indeed in 5.1, can't you use the same nomenclature as years and years worth of DVD covers, PUT Dolby Digital 5.1 and the little 6 speaker logo not just the double D's, which in DVD land usually just denote dolby stereo.
    4. some administrator postings, I can't remember (apologies if wrong) seeing OFFICIAL responses in these forums, just loads of confused owners. And I remember a couple of years ago when my 80GB firmware update rendered my ipod dead, and it took WEEKS to find out how to fix it, which was a roll back until the new firmware was released.
I love 720p movies in 5.1 DD via HDMI, or rather I love the idea of them. It seems daft that to get it all as it should be I need to revert to component and optical

It seems that your HDMI input on your receiver has not been configured to accept 5.1. You may need to check the settings of the receiver.

This option only exists in 2.3 if you have extra audio tracks (e.g Director's Commentary, Alternate Language). If you have the "default" 2 tracks of AAC Stereo and AC3 then the Audio tab does not appear.

However, no matter if it is a few seconds or not it still plays in 5.1. Again, my ATV to my receiver via HDMI flips over to 5.1 when playing the startup movie, back to Stereo when negotiating the menus then back to 5.1 when i play a movie

Would be nice as it has affected a lot of people

I have plenty of DVD's where the Double D logo is shown and then right after it the words: Dolby Digital. Anyway, head on over to www.appletvjunkie.com if you want a list.

Again, no issues here with 5.1 over HDMI. You say you have a brand new receiver - perhaps the settings are not quite right on it to accept 5.1 over HDMI. Just a thought.
I can't see how a "known' film that plays in 5.1 over Optical but does not over HDMI be a problem for Apple. It's not like they can add "Do not send over HDMI" flags.
Yes, there is a big thread on AC3 not working with the 2.3 update, but that is down to the lack of AAC track on peoples own converted movies, and nothing to do with it being sent over Optical or HDMI. I don't believe Apple would be missing the AAC track on a movie they rent.
    Cheers

  • Dolby Digital 5.1 Premiere + Encore

    Hello Everybody,
I'm from the Netherlands and working for several years with Adobe Premiere and Encore. Last month I bought a new camcorder and TV to watch movies in HD.
But I'm struggeling getting Dolby Digital on my DVD. I have read a lot of discussions, but none have the answer (for my problem).
I use Adobe Premiere 5.0 and Encore. For Dolby I have bought the Minnetonka Plugin.
My video camera is a Panasonic HDC-SDT750 with 5.1 mic.
When I play video from my camcorder over HDMI on my TV (with stereoset) the sound is 5.1 Dolby Digital. All the speakers have sound.
But when I play a DVD the sound is only stereo. (All bought DVD's are Dolby Digital ==> stereoset is working fine)
    What did I do :
I imported the movie (.MTS) into Premiere. On the Audio Mixer tab I can see 6 channels moving.
I exported the video with sound over the Minnetonka plugin and created a M2V and AC3 file.
I imported this video (M2V) and sound (AC3) file into Encore and burned the DVD.
As far as I know this should be the way to do it. But without succes. No dolby Digital.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or forget?
What are the best settings for my camcorder regarding to loose as less as possible quality (perhaps someone who has the same camcorder)?
(HD video 1920x1080 with dolby digital 5.1 sound, file is written with MTS extension )
    Thanks for your help,
    Pascal

    Hi Jim,
Of course the next step is burning on Blu-Ray.
But first getting DD5.1 on disk before wasting a lot of money.
The master-file is on HDD and in HD. I can use that always later.
    Thanks for your input,
    Regards,
    Pascal
