Dolly Parton's Seatbelt?

Unlike Dolly's seatbelt I'm NOT tight, honest ... but I do need a wee bit of convincing on a couple of purchases I'm considering.
(Also, apologies in advance, because this is more a general iLife question, rather than a specific iPhoto query - hope no-one minds too much).
I've just started making heavy use of iPhotos, iMovie and iDVD. Fantastic - I'm blown away. But the versions on my machine all begin with 4. And all the reviews/forums etc are plugging iLife 06.
I don't want to upgrade simply for the sake of it. While it would be nice to get a "search" function in iPhoto, I'm a bit concerned about the problems there seem to be with audio when burning movies using the latest version of iDVD.
It seems there are pros and cons. To finally get to the point, my queries are these:
Q - If I move to iLife 06, should I back up all the content of my Mac to an external hard drive first?
Q - Will I also have to upgrade my OS to Tiger?
Q - Are the iLife and OS upgrades easy to do - ie how long do they take and what are the risks?
Q - I've never had any complaints with my Mac and/or Panther. While it would be nice to have a "search" tool in iPhoto and an RSS reader in Safari, are there enough other reasons for me to make the switch to Tiger and iLife 06?
Dolly jokes aside, it is not the cost that is stopping me - I just want to be sure I'm not going to lose everything/anything by upgrading (hangover from my daytime alter ego as a Windows user!)
Many thanks
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   PowerPC G5 1.8GHz, 1.25GB Ram

It is against the Discussions rules to post topics
about unreleased products.
I suppose I can see the sense in that when I think about it. There are plenty of other places to go for speculation.
Sorry for the transgression - and back to my original questions: is it simply a matter of buying upgrades (Tiger or iL6), popping the CD in and wahey!? Or is it a bit more complicated than that? What are the real risks (if any) and the "best practices" in terms of protecting existing data?
Cheers

  • Can final cut pro x remove vocals on mp3?

    I want to Karaoke 'Try' by Dolly Parton on Blue Smoke as there are no available karaokes of it commercially, so I want to remove the vocals on the song but keep the musical arrangement.  Can Final Cut Pro X do that?  Thanks, GoDeAn

    I don't know anything that can do that. If you find one can you let us know?

  • Does converting to MP3 create duplicate files in library?

    I figured out how to convert my songs form ACC to MP3 (for use with other devices), but now my library in I-tunes is showing duplicate songs for these selected songs. Does this mean when I connect my IPOD that there will be both the ACC and the MP3 on there now and take up double the space for each song?
    Thanks!

    When you convert in iTUnes, it keeps the original and makes a COPY in another format. SO if you have "Dolly Parton - Cuntry girl" in AAC format, and convert that song into MP3, you will end up with 2, one original in AAC and another copy in MP3. If the ipod is set on its default of "AUto update all songs" yes both will be put on the ipod.
    If you wish not to have AAC files, first goto edit>preferences>advanced tab>import sub tab and chage it from AAC to MP3 so future imports from CD will be in MP3.

  • HTML Data Set not created?

    I have created a very basic page to test (and learn) about dynamic spry regions, but the data set constructor does not seem to be instantiating the data set.  At this point I'm keeping it very simple just to see how things work.
    Per the Spry Framework documentation, I moved the framework include files into my site and I created a table in a separate .html file containing only the table, fotm_db_frag.html, as a fragment.  The table is simple; opening it in DW CS3 shows it's well formed with a header row and data rows.  It's id tag is set to "dsFotm"
    Here's the entire page file so far:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:spry="http://ns.adobe.com/spry/">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    <title>Untitled Document</title>
    <!--Link the Spry libraries-->
    <script type="text/javascript" src="includes/SpryData.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="includes/SpryHTMLDataSet.js"></script>
    <!--Create a data set object-->
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var dsFotmdb = new Spry.Data.HTMLDataSet("fotm_db_frag.html", "dsFotm");</script>
    dsFotmdb.setColumnType("Date", "date")
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="container">Content for  id "container" Goes Here</div>
    </body>
    </html>
    At this point, I select the content of the container div and attempt to use visual aids to insert a spry region, but the dialog that pops up says that no data sets have been defined.  I tried saving the file, I looked at Testing server options (left this set at None), I looked in the help to see if there was anything I needed to do in order for the script to run ... but I couldn't find anything that would make the new constructor instantiate data set dsFotmdb.
    Help please !!!
    BTW:  before starting all this, I downloaded Spry 1.6.1 Framework and updated my copy of DW CS3 with the spry updater (that all seemed to work).

    Try making a simple XML file and Dataset to see if that works
    Call this Test.xml

  • Right XML technology-library

    I have some experience with XML but get easily lost in the jungle of acronyms and XML technologies out there. I have a problem to solve and would like to know to which technologies or libraries to focus. That is, if it's possible at all. The problem is as follows:
    I have a big XML document, although not so big as to not to fit in memory, with structure rather flexible. I want to be able to make queries to it of the type:
    Give me all elements containing element (or attribute) XXX
    Give me all elements of type YYY inside elements containing element (or attribute) XXX
    Give me all elements of type YYY inside elements where element (or attribute) XXX has value VVV (or less than, greater than...)
    For example having document:
    CD>
    <TITLE>Empire Burlesque</TITLE>
    <ARTIST>Bob Dylan</ARTIST>
    <COUNTRY>USA</COUNTRY>
    <COMPANY>Columbia</COMPANY>
    <PRICE>10.90</PRICE>

    </CD>
    <CD>
    <TITLE>Hide your heart</TITLE>
    <ARTIST>Bonnie Tyler</ARTIST>
    <COUNTRY>UK</COUNTRY>
    <COMPANY>CBS Records</COMPANY>
    <PRICE>9.90</PRICE>
    <YEAR>1988</YEAR>
    </CD>
    <CD>
    <TITLE>Greatest Hits</TITLE>
    <ARTIST>Dolly Parton</ARTIST>
    <COUNTRY>USA</COUNTRY>
    <COMPANY>RCA</COMPANY>
    <PRICE>9.90</PRICE>
    <YEAR>1982</YEAR>
    </CD>
    Would like to ask for all TITLEs from COMPANY = 'RCA' or all CD info from all CDs where YEAR < 1960 and PRICE < 10, etc.
    I realize that this is using XML as a database, but if possible I would like to avoid having to put the data inside a database for querying, even if the database would be as flexible as the XML (I'll be adding or removing element types in the future). Adding a database to my program would be some stretch. I would love to have a java library that could be queried for that kind of info in a flexible way (the query should ideally be a string, not hard coded). I don't need complete guidelines, just names of technologies or libraries to look at. It's simply that I don't know where to start.
    Thanks in advance.
    Julen.

    I recommend using XPath queries as in the following example:import javax.xml.xpath.XPath;
    import javax.xml.xpath.XPathConstants;
    import javax.xml.xpath.XPathFactory;
    import org.w3c.dom.Document;
    import org.w3c.dom.Node;
    import org.w3c.dom.NodeList;
    Document doc = <your XML document>;
    Node rootNode = doc.getDocumentElement();
    XPathFactory xpf = XPathFactory.newInstance();
    XPath xp = xpf.newXPath();
    String query = <your query string>;
    NodeList nodeList = (NodeList)xp.evaluate(query, rootNode, XPathConstants.NODESET);This code fragment retrieves the matching nodes in the form of a NodeList collection, which is capable of iterating through the nodes it contains. Though XPath queries are inherently select queries (they do not modify but only return the underlying data), the nodes in the NodeList can be processed further as needed, so you can even simulate action queries. This is because any modifications made to the nodes in the NodeList will be automatically reflected in the corresponding nodes in the parent XML document. Since the efficiency of using XPath queries is largely a matter of how familiar you are with the XPath language, it's best to read up on it first in the tutorials on the Internet. To start you off, here are two examples:
    1. This query selects all the <TITLE> elements that have a <CD> parent element and a <COMPANY> sibling element containing "RCA".String query = "//CD/TITLE[../COMPANY='RCA']"2. This query selects all <CD> elements that have a <YEAR> child element containing less than "1987" and a <PRICE> child element containing less than "10".String query = "//CD[YEAR<1987 and PRICE<10]"

  • 4261 what the......?

    please can somone help me?
    i'm sorry to bring this subject up, but it seems that on other older threads this situation hasnt been fully looked at. ok...
    burning cds happily for months. no change in cd media type (for relevance i'm using philips cd-r 700mb 52x speed cds) for which i have been very happy with in several different pcs. i have not recently installed or uninstalled any software, but this itunes has decided not to recognise any of the cds. when it finally does accept that there may be a cd in the drive, it burns maybe 2 of the songs then spits the cd back out with the error message fo 4261.
    i'm wasting cds here, of which i cant afford to, and if i was still at uni, i would be throwing my pc in the bin by now. i have just upgraded itunes, to the newest version to see if that helps, but to no avail.
    my pc is hp pavillion, with an amd sempron chip, all the usual ram and bits and bobs. the burner came with it, and happens to be a dvd burner.
    if there is anyone that can help me put my beloved dolly parton music onto cd, so i can sing away in the car, then please help me! if not then i'll be forced to take this up with the spotty sales guys in the apple shop, who will just tell me to buy a mac.(i have infact got one, but its rather old and couldnt run such things as itunes).

    Not sure, but you can contact Apple here about that

  • ITunes improvement suggestion

    I don't know if this is the proper venue for this sort of thing, but since Apple doesn't seem to want their customers emailing them, and thus hides all their email addresses (Post Purchase Customer Service: "We care how you feel about your product... if you have questions and concerns, let us know!!! <insert cheery happy mac-inspired happy smiley face thingy here>", but then doesn't provide a method of doing so... It's all good, though, I can't email Microsoft, either.). So, I'm putting it here, in case someone that makes decisions reads this thing.
    I bought a song tonight, that I haven't heard in something like 25+ years. I didn't know the artist (still don't), so I previewed the long list of near misses in the search results and re-recordings. I found one clip, that was instrumental only, that sounded sort of scratchy, and I thought it was very easy to believe that I had found, THE version I wanted, recorded in the 70's by my reckoning. So I bought it. In any case, it's a little over three minutes of instrumental... no lyrics. Gar!!!
    Here's the suggestion: it would rock if songs recorded by the original artist were somehow indicated on the search results list. It would also rock if there were another indicator to show the first release versions, and another to show whether or not the recording is an instrumental or lyrical. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't really give a crap about people hijacking other artist's songs when their own careers are in the dumps... if I'm looking for a song, 99% of the time, I mean I want the one recorded by the original artist, that played on the radio (ie. I hope I never have to hear Dolly Parton's version of Stairway). It should be easier to find those than it currently is.
    I mean, at $.99, it's not a big loss that I don't get to hear the words to "In the year 2525" - I'll just buy it again. I'm actually more annoyed at what I had to go through to place my suggestion. An email would have sufficed, not because I'd expect an answer, but because I had a suggestion and just wanted to fire it off. I didn't want to have to go through all this multiple account creation crap just to be sitting here typing this, not knowing if the people that guide the development of iTunes and the Music Store are even going to see it.

    Here's a link that should let you e-mail the store. Go to the section on download questions, then click on artists & albums, I believe. Fill out the form at the bottom of the page. iTMS support is by e-mail only. This is also a user to user forum only, so we would have no control over the content of the store.

  • What would cause 16ghz iphone 4 to reboot at random times?

    what would cause my 16ghz iphone 4 to randomly reboot without warning? it also fails to save pictures some of the time.

    I am having this same exact problem with my iPhone 4. It plays "9 to 5 - Dolly Parton" (funny I know) at random times. Sometimes at start up, when using camera, when plugging in charger or car charger, or for just no reason at all. I am still in the first 30 days of owning the phone so I will be taking it to AT&T tomorrow.

  • Two iPods - Two Independent iTunes?

    Hi,
    A bit of a strange one here. I've had a search and couldn't find much, so would appreciate any ideas.
    I had a 3G 20gb iPod and have just bought a new 60gb one, so I have wiped the old 20gb one and have given it to my mum. Now, what I'm after doing is this:
    I have a PowerBook with my music library saved on it, and also an external LaCie 160gb external Brick hard-disk. I don't have masses of space left on the PB drive, and so would like to save all of my mum's music in a separate library on the external drive. I want to do it like this for a few reasons - I don't end up with rubbish like Dolly Parton on my iPod, and I need to preserve space on this internal drive.
    I tried simply downloading iTunes from the Apple website and dragging it into the LaCie drive, but it wouldn't let me do that because it's not the drive that the computer boots from. I don't know how else I can do this.
    If anyone knows how, or has done a similar thing I would be grateful.
    Thanks, and I'm using iTunes 6.0.4 if that's any help.

    You don't need a 2nd iTunes installation, as you can set up preferences for each of your iPODs seperately.
    Make one auto-sync all playlist and the 2nd one only sync certain playlist - whatever you want.
    Just connect an iPod - then set its preferences, then proceed to the next one.

  • Tracking a shaky dolly shot to a shaky plate shot

    Hey guys,
    I have a dolly shot pushing into a character with a basketball floating below his hand. The basketball is held up by a green c-stand that we would like to key out, so we shot the exact same movement without the boy or basketball and stand to use as a plate shot.
    The dolly move was made on a motion controlled rig, but we still have some shakiness to it and would like to align these two shots so it will not look.. awful.
    The only thing I could come up with to this point was to track the same point in both videos, then have one of those tracking point follow the other tracking points movement. Is it possible to have a tracking point track another tracking point?

    Stabilize both shots. Do the roto, lay one shot over the other so the BG plate fills the holes. Warp stabilizer won't be the best way to stabilize two dolly shots. You'll never get identical results. Instead, use Mocha. There are several tutorials available for stabilizing with Mocha.
    It would really help to see the master. No need to see the clean bg plate.

  • Motion Tracking a Dolly Shot

    I'm having a little trouble figuring this out. Thought someone on here might have done something similar.
    The shot: A person walks down a sidewalk. The camera dollies parallel to them so it sees a wide of their profile. The person disappears and reappears in the shot as the camera dollies.
    Is there a good way to pull off a poor man's motion tracking effect like this? Certain plug-ins to use to get it right?
    A somewhat similar effect occurs a few (brief) times in this video: http://vimeo.com/24569304
    Happy to clarify if that doesn't make sense. Thanks in advance!

    Here's what I'd do. I'd shoot a clean take of the actor with a dolly shot with the dolly on track if possible and the camera locked off. Have an assistant keep track of the time.
    Once you have a clean take, roll back and take another shot.
    If you don't have a dolly and track then do the best you can to keep the shot as close as you can to the "good" take.
    Now you need to track both shots in Mocha. There a re tutorials on how to track a moving shot available. You would stabilize both shots, lay the clean plate over the plate with the actor and crop it with a soft edge mask big enough to cover the actor. Did you get that? You want to lay the clean plate over just the area where the actor is. Make any adjustments necessary to the timing of the shot to keep things lined up by using time remap on the clean plate.
    once you have the composited shots looking like there's no actor in the shot , then you can use transitions, fades, or other effects to bring in your actor by eliminating the top clean portion.
    Once this is all set up, remove the stabilization on the actor plate making sure that the clean plate is tied to it by parenting.
    Don't expect to be able to hold this hide the actor effect for more than a few seconds without dolly track. If you carefully watch the reference  video you'll see that there's not a lot of exact frame matching going on. There just kitschy transitions between takes. The first one is especially awkward and there's a big jump that's hidden fairly well by the transition. In fact, I can't see anything except the distortions of the sidewalk and the overlays that probably used motion tracking.

  • Time Remapped Dolly Shot, Smooth in AE, but Jerky in Rendering

    Hi,
    My workflow:  Canon h.264 original footage transcoded to ProRes 4444 in Compressor.  Imported to HD project in AE, footage time remapped to smooth out uneveness in dolly speed, with Frame Blending turned on.  AE 5.5 Mac OS 10.6
    My question is that the ram preview  below is relatively smooth, but when I exported a PR4444 sequence to FCP, once in the timeline it's jerky and stutters. (Forgive the sloppy mask, it's now fixed).  The stutters and jerks also appear when playing the 4444 clip back in QT10, and Vimeo.
    Any suggestions?  Pixel Motion needed?
    http://vimeo.com/39895088
    Jesse

    > My question is that the ram preview  below is relatively smooth, but when I exported a PR4444 sequence to FCP, once in the timeline it's jerky and stutters. (Forgive the sloppy mask, it's now fixed).  The stutters and jerks also appear when playing the 4444 clip back in QT10, and Vimeo.<
    Depends on what your set up is in FCP. I'm going to assume you know what you're doing in FCP as far as how to set sequences properly and you know the limitations of your machine.
    > Yes I'm aware of the timeline issues, and had hoped that once exported/rendered out of fcp that it would go away.  The above link was a Vimeo compressed RAM preview out of AE And that plays smoothly!.  Not out of fcp however. <
    Well, exporting out of FCP is not really part of this equation. If you export to the codec you're using for your playback of the finished project, say, H.264 or MP4 or MPEG2, the clip will play perfectly within the capabilites of your machine and the player app you are using.
    > Would it help to see what it looks like out of fcp on Vimeo? <
    Nope. The vimeo clip will always play fine because, regardless of what it started out as, when you upload to vimeo it is transocded to the vimeo-friendly codec.
    > Do you think this is because of the heaviness of the 4444 clip?<
    Not liekly. Heavy, maybe, but ProRes is designed to be used without issues in FCP on Macs in Quicktime. One uses 4444 only if one needs the alpha. If you don't need the alpha, any of the 422s will work fine. I didn't see the mask you mentioned so I don't know why you're using 4444. It is not often that 4444 cannot be played in FCP unless the pixel dimensions are just too large or you've chosen a weird frame rate. In that case, the clip must be heavily processed before it can fit the timeline's settings.
    I find the time remapping and motion smoothing capabilites of Apple Motion's optical flow functions are completely adequate for all but the most extreme screwups encountered while shooting.

  • Text looses quality after camera-dolly

    Hi there,
    I am working with text and zoom in with the camera- dolly button.
    But nearly immediately the edges of the text get "stairs"and it gets blurry.
    Is there a way to correct this ?
    Thanks for answering,
    Andrea

    Ok, I found the "Render Quality"- "Best"- Button

  • Any websites that show how to make dolly's and tracks?

    Hey guys,
    I'm an independent filim maker, and I was just curious if any of you guys knew any websites that show how to make tracks and dollys for cheap. I'm trying to avoid renting expensive equipment.

    This is just one out of dozens:

    I did use a handmade dolly sometime ago and it did the trick!
