Domain Joining process at the backgroud

I have a small query that what happens in the background when we join computer in an Active Directory domain.

Hi,
Please confirm my understanding on your requirement,
You need to run a query at the background, when you join a new computer to the domain, which in turn automates certain changes on the joined computer.

  • Sideloading on domain joined Windows 8.1 Professional Update Tablets

    Hi folks,
    first, I want to apologize for my bad English. I'm out of practice since several years and Google Translator is not the best assistance.
    We are developing a Windows 8 LOB App for our customer. This App shall only be available for the employees of this customer. Therefore, releasing the App in the Windows Store is not an option.
    As far as I understand the announcements by Microsoft, it is now possible to sideload Windows Store Apps on devices where Windows 8.1 Pro Update is installed. The requirements are the app has to be signed, the group policy "Allow all trusted apps to install"
    has to be enabled and the devices must be part of a domain. A sideloading key is not required anymore.
    At the moment I try to sideload an app to an Windows 8.1 Pro lenovo tablet. The System is up to date and the device is part of an AD-Domain.
    To sideload the app, I've done the following:
    -> First I deleted the developer license from my testing device.
    -> Then I've created a code signing certificate with mkcert and Pvk2Pfx according to.
    -> Creating and signing the App package with Visual Studio 2013 worked without problems.
    -> I activated the local GP "Allow all trusted apps to install" and installed the certificate under the local machine\Trusted Root Certification Authority certificate store.
    But when I try to install the app with Add-AppPackage, the process abort with an error. The error message says, that a developer license or a sideloading key is required.
    What do I wrong? Has someone managed to sideload an App to a domain joined Windows 8.1 Pro device and can give me some advice?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Tobias

    Hello,
    though, I have not updated this thread in the last days, I'm still not sure, whether sideloading keys are necessary to successfully sideload apps to domain joined Windows 8.1 Pro devices.
    To make sure that I have got you right: Might someone confirm to me, that even for domain joined devices with Windows 8.1 Pro Update installed, sideloading keys are necessary, because these devices are only ready to, but not yet enabled for sideloading.
    If no sideloading keys are necessary, is it required, for successful sideloading, that the devices are logged into the domain network and connected with the domain controller, for a successful deployment? My test device is domain joined but at the moment it
    is not logged into that domain network.
    Thanks.
    Tobias
    I'm unable to confirm myself, since I don't use Pro edition in my organisation (we use Enterprise edition because we purchased that in our agreement).
    It might be possible, that the MSFT statements for Pro (does not require sideloading key), might only be functional when using the Volume Licensing channel product for Pro. i.e. maybe the OEM channel and Retail channel of Pro might not be enabled for sideloading?
    It sounds like you are using an OEM or Retail channel Pro (i.e. that OS shipped on the Lenovo device).
    This is my observation from your symptoms. I'm not sure how to validate that, without trying each case.
    It may be necessary to raise a support call with MSFT to validate that.

  • Restrict Outlook Access Only To Domain Joined PCs?

    We have contractors that use their employers laptops to access various LAN resources on our network such as access to shared network drives, printers, Remote Desktop and access to our Intranet sites.  They have mailboxes on our Exchange servers and
    we would like their mailbox access to be restricted to EAS and OWA, not Outlook unless they are using one of our domain-joined computers.
    The main reason for this is to restrict these users from downloading their mailbox contents into into a personal folder.  We can create PST restrictions on our domain-joined PCs via group policy, but these policies would not apply to computers not joined
    to our domain.
    Of course we would also like to prevent Outlook access to their mail from their home PCs that they may have installed Outlook on, but we still need seamless remote access to Outlook on domain-joined laptops used remotely.
    How can this be done?

  • Problems connecting a non-domain joined outlook to exchange

    Hello,
    i'm having issues configuring outlook (be it 2007, 2010 or 2013 all fail the same) on non-domain joined computers in the LAN to a exchange 2013 server.
    I select manual config, in server we put "mail.domain.local" and user "domain\user" and it bounces with "cannot complete action, the connection to exchange is not available, outlook must be online".
    We tried with external full email address, nothing
    tried setting the outlook anywhere proxy, same, tried using ip address, same
    it simply refuses to configure.
    any ideaS?

    Hi,
    Generally, the external non-domain joined computers can connect to Exchange 2013 by using Outlook Anywhere and the Autodiscover service to auto-setup the Exchange account.
    If the auto-setup for Exchange account fails, please check the Autodiscover service and Outlook Anywhere configuration by the following command:
    Get-OutlookAnywhere | FL
    Directly access the following URL in IE respectively, and check whether an Error 600 returns:
    Https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
    Https://mail.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
    Please make sure the the ExternalHostName parameter for Outlook Anywhere is configured to your external namespace for Exchange 2013 (for example: mail.domain.com).
    In Exchange certificate, please make sure the namespace mail.domain.com is included in your trusted certificate which is assigned with IIS service.
    For manual Exchange account setup, please run the following command to get the mailbox GUID for server name configuration:
    Get-Mailbox UserA | FL Identity,ExchangeGuid
    Then go to Control Pane > Mail to configure the Outlook profile. In Server Settings, import the [email protected] into the Server box and click Check Name to have a try.

  • Do SCCM clients need to be domain joined for Windows Patch Deployments

    Hi,
    We have SCCM 2012 R2 deployed in an environment with both workgroup and domain joined machines. Currently only the domained joined machines have the SCCM client installed. We were thinking of bringing patching into SCCM rather than WSUS but were wondering
    if we install the SCCM client on workgroup machines do they need to be domain mebers to work or do they just need to be able to resolve the SCCM server?BAsically, I'm looking for confimation that we can patch non-domain joined machines via SCCM.
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Here's a nice blog post that adds some gotcha and additional detail:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2014/07/01/managing-workgroup-clients-in-system-center-2012-configuration-manager.aspx
    Ultimately, ConfigMgr doesn't care if systems are domain joined or not but there are some nuances and caveats that must be accounted for.

  • MDT 2013 - Capture WIM vs. Domain Join in rules.ini

    Hi,
    Pre MDT2013 it was possible to have domain join settings in the rules.ini and run capture tasks.
    rules.ini ->
    JoinDomain=<my domain>
    DomainAdmin=<domain join account>
    DomainAdminDomain=<domain>
    DomainAdminPassword=<password>
    MachineObjectOU=OU=Computers Germany,OU=_Computers,OU=EU Offices,DC=bar,DC=foo,DC=com
    On MDT2013, whenever I enable my domain join settings capture task will cancel shortly upon start.
    Is this a desired behaviour?
    How are you working aroun that?
    Regards,
    Albert

    Albert,
    My recommendation would be to create a second Deployment Share and use that only for Build & Capture Task Sequences.
    I blogged about this a while ago, and I think it would work well for you (Build and Capture Task Sequence)
    I recommend re-building your image you want to capture each time.  This way you have a clean build with less patches on it (as the superseded patches will not be applied).
    If you don't (or can't) do this, then you should try the following:
    Assumptions
    * Task sequence is named SYSPREPCAP
    * I think from reading your previous posts that you don't want to join this to the domain, but you want all other TS's to join.
    You'll want to try this in your CustomSettings.ini file.
    [Settings]
    Priority=TaskSequenceID, Default
    [SYSPREPCAP]
    JoinWorkgroup=WORKGROUP
    [DEFAULT]
    JoinDomain=<my domain>
    DomainAdmin=<domain join account>
    DomainAdminDomain=<domain>
    DomainAdminPassword=<password>
    MachineObjectOU=OU=Computers Germany,OU=_Computers,OU=EU Offices,DC=bar,DC=foo,DC=com

  • Sideloading not working on domain joined enterprise devices

    Hi,
    I wanted to know if sideloading has any limitations that an OMA DM agent that it won't be able to install an app through sideloading if the tablet is domain joined?
    We are seeing this on enterprise edition tablets which are domain joined and enrolled to the an MDM (mobile device management) server that the OMA DM agent cannot install a sideloaded app.
    We'd highly appreciate some pointers.
    Thanks,
    D

    Hi,
    Sorry for my dilatory reply. According to the following description:
    Windows 8.1 supports three types of user accounts on a device: Local Accounts, Microsoft Accounts and
    Domain Joined Accounts. The OMA-DM agent is disabled when a device is domain joined which means
    the management service cannot set password policy for a domain joined account. Windows 8.1 RT and
    Windows 8.1 Home SKUs cannot be domain joined.
    It seems like OMA-DM agent doesn't support domain joined of Windows 8.1 device.

  • Trying to use Variables with the Unknown Computer collection to prompt Task Sequence for Domain, Join Account, Join Password, and Join Location.

    I want to use SCCM 2012 R2 and OSD, to boot a bare metal machine, install and OS, and bind it to Active Directory. The catch is that I want the deployment process in SCCM to prompt for the following pieces of information, and then use that information to
    bind the computer to Active Directory (W/O using MDT) instead of supply the data in the task sequence.
    Computer Name
    Domain
    Domain OU
    Domain Join Account
    I am approaching this in a similar fashion as stated in this blog.
    http://osdblog.com/2013/06/26/add-a-prompt-for-a-computer-name-in-your-sccm-deployment/
    I have added the following collection variables to the unknown computers collection:
    When I launch the task sequence, I am prompted as I would expect. I input the desired information, the deployment competes, but it does not bind to the domain.  Here is what my TS looks like. I intentally disabbled  the apply Network Settings step
    because it forces you to enter specific information if it enabled. I don't want to that, thus why I am trying to use the variables.
    My SMSTS log does not have a whole lot of meaningfull data, but I can post it if someone wants to see it. The only possible thing I could think of would be drivers, their are some driver errors in the log. However, if I turn on the Apply Networking setting
    process in the task sequence and turn off the variables, the machines bind fine. With that in mind, I would not think my problem would be driver related. Anyone out there have expertise in using a process like this, that could assist?
    --Tony

    Awesome! Thanks. One more thing, how should I supply the OSDJoinPassword variable? Should I just enter %OSDJoinPassword%
    for Password and Confirm Password? I can not tell if it will actually read it as a variable or try to use "%OSDJoinPassword%" for
    the actual password.

  • Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."

    Hi,
    Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
    When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
    There have 3 suggestion in this article:
    1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
    2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
    On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
    3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
    This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
    Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.
    BR
    Guo YingHui

    Hi Guo Ying,
    I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
    For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
    When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
    Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
    You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
    Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
    You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
    After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

  • Windows Server 2012 Foundation, in a Workgroup - "The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller"...

    Every few days we see two dialogs with the following messages:
    Dialog 1, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
    The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller.
    Dialog 2, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
    The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller. If the license compliance check cannot be completed, the server will automatically shut
    down in 8 day(s) 23 hour(s) 0 minute(s).
    The server is not (and never has been) joined to a domain or had any DC roles installed. In fact its still connected to the default Workgroup.
    The server was configured in our office and never showed this message until it was installed on site. The main difference from what I can see is that when installed on site it was given a static IP address and does not have any DNS settings in the network
    adapter properties.
    I have scoured a number of forums on this error but in almost every other instance of this error message the servers are connected to a Domain Controller and the solutions generally are linked to dis-joining and rejoining the domain. Unfortunately this is
    not an option for this scenario.
    I initially thought that adding some relevant DNS server IP address may resolve the issue, however, we have the exact same model server configured exactly the same running at a different site that does not experience this problem. This server also has no
    DNS server configured.
    I have seen a post that suggests turning off the servers "Foundation Checking", but I'm unsure how to do this.

    Thanks for your response Vivian.
    I can confirm that this server is not (and never has been) a member of any active directory, it is configured as a Workgroup server. It was initially configured on a network that does have an active directory, but was never joined to it. During that time it
    never displayed these messages.
    The server was moved into production on a different site and network and setup with a static IP address.The site network does have its own active directory but the server was not joined to it. It is whilst on this new network that these messages began.
    Since my original post DNS servers have been added and the Microsoft activation has been verified, however, the messages are still appearing.
    There are only 2 user accounts configured on this server. The local admin account and another local admin user.
    The remote desktop services roles have been installed but not yet configured. I don't think that has any bearing on this scenario though.
    The description of this error in the above "Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation" link states:
    This error occurs when the server cannot finish checking the requirements for the root domain, forest trust configuration, or both. It usually happens when the server cannot connect to a domain controller. If the situation persists, the server will
    shut down 10 days after the first time the compliance check failed. Each time this error message occurs, it will state the actual time remaining before the server will shut down. If you restart the server after it has shut down because of non-compliance, the
    server will shut itself down again in 3 days.
    The above description leads me to the following question - In a Workgroup environment, does the server still try to contact a domain controller to establish a level of trust? If this is the case could it be that the server can no longer see the initial DC
    on its new network and this is what is triggering the messages?
    Am I clutching at straws here?

    After joining computer to the windows doamin i cannot change password for Mac for the domain user

    Hi,
    Did this problem occures after installed Windows 8.1 Update 1? Here is another thread that had similar problem. Also I don't think this problem relate with Domain. Please refer to the solution of the thread below for reference, If there is any
    progress, please let us know.

  • Launchpad won't logon automatically after the "Skip Domain Joining" workaround.

    Hi all!
    I've setup a Windows Server 2012 Essentials with 2 Windows 8 PCs using the skip domain joining workaround available here;
    ***/thread/aa40963c-7235-40f7-85f5-8f8d030a7c13 (sorry, can't post full url, but it's on this forum)
    My problem is, at each client reboot, even if the option to save my credentials is selected, I need to re-enter the password for the Launchpad to connect to the server.
    Any ideas how to solve this?
    Best regards,
    Tommy

    That's still 20% (a potentially large number of users) and it is stopping me, and I am sure, others from moving from WHS2011.... even with the benefits of WSE2012.
    I was hoping to see this remedied in WSE2012R2 but it looks like this is still not supported.
    I cannot see why, for non-domain joined machines you cannot at least allow an ability to save the password (even if it needs a registry change to enable this feature) so that the 20% can use it this way and move onto WSE2012R2.
    There are plenty of other areas where passwords are stored in the users profile for other areas of access, so not sure why this is any different in this scenario.
    This is especially annoying for those WHS users given the fact that WSE2012 was supposed to provide a real migration path for WHS2011 users - so please make some allowance for this group of users to provide them (many of whom where strong evangelists for
    Microsoft) with a way forward.

  • How to join a client PC to WS2012E R2 that's already a member of another enterprise domain using the skip domain join registry entry?

    In WSE12 R1 you can install the connector application on a Windows 7 PC that has already been joined to a corporate domain using the skip domain registry key:
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment" /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1
    Upon doing so, the client PC is then able to perform client backups to the WSE12 R1 server but remains a member of the original corporate domain.  This is no longer possible when using this registry key when installing the Windows Server 2012 Essentials
    R2 connector
    Is anyone aware of a way to install the WSE12 R2 connector and skip domain join without first leaving the corporate domain?
    I am avoiding moving to WSE12 R2 until I can figure out a way to accomplish this.

    I noticed this was incorrectly marked as an ANSWER. Although it wasn't a resolution, I recognize the connector install behavior is different in R1 vs R2. If it would be possible to ask the developers to include the following functionality in a future
    Essentials R2 Update, we'd appreciate it. During client connector install, give user the option via radio button: 1.) install connector join domain, enable client PC backup 2.) install connector, join domain only, no client PC backup 3.) install connector,
    do not join domain, enable client PC backup Option #3 would satisfy this request and negate the need for unauthorized registry hacks. Thank you.
    Great discussion here, and glad things seem to have changed for the better with R2.
    Spot on with those suggestions, miles267!
    Back in Dec 2013, I wrote about my fairly simple registry tweak done at just the right spot during the client connector install, still seems to work like a charm
    (as of Dec 12 2014, ~15,000 folks read it so far):
    TinkerTry.com/connect
    which redirects to:
    http://www.tinkertry.com/how-to-make-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials-client-connector-install-behave-just-like-windows-home-server
    with a lot of (admittedly confusing) comments:

    Sincerely hoping such feedback helps encourage Microsoft to take a simple radio box checkmark request seriously. Really, it'd really help folks a lot, so they wouldn't have to feel they are trusting a "hack" which is really a simple, documented
    registry tweak, done at just the right time.
    I hope this little post here, and my article, truly helped people out!
