Domain Level and Backup AD as VM?

We're currently running Windows 2012 R2 Essentials (25 users license default) as the DC.  We're thinking to have the 2008R2 as the secondary (backup) DC.  Questions are:
1. We have AD recycle bin enable, would it cause any issues lower the domain level to 2008R2?
2. Can 2008R2 run as a VM on a Hyper-V (the host is 2008R2 and part of the domain, but not DC)?
Thank you,

Yes you can run a VM and promote it as a Domain Controller, however if your domain / forest functional level is set to Windows Server 2012 then you cannot have a Windows Server 2008 R2 as a domain Controller. For this you need to have Windows Server 2008
R2 domain functional Level.
Domain Functional Level and Forest Functional level cannot be downgraded. if it's already set to Server 2012 functional level then you cannot downgrade it to 2008 R2. Please go ahead and check what's ur Forest & Domain functional Level

Sorry but you are wrong.  I just lowered the levels to 2008R2.

  • Full Backups, Level 0 Backups, and Archived Logs

We have an active Oracle server and a standby Oracle server. We keep the standby database up to date with a cron script. The script tells the active database to do 'alter system switch logfile;'. We then rsync the archived logs to our standby server and have rman apply them.
This works everyday except Monday (of course!) and it only recently started failing on Mondays. The only change was that our Sunday backups used to be 'Full' backups but are now 'level 0' backups. Ever since that change, the first attempt to apply the archived logs to the standby server after the level 0 is taken on the active server gives us something like this:
    ORA-00308: cannot open archived log
    '/opt/oracle/flash_recovery_area/ORCL/archivelog/2012_04_16/o1_mf_1_60519_%u_.arc'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
Of course, the file is not there and doesn't exist on the active server either. And of course, the nightly level1 backups fo not give us problems applying archived logs to the standby database the rest of the week.
The only way I know to recover from this is to apply the level 0 backup or take a new level 0 and apply it. After that, all subsequent archive logs just work. Any idea why changing from Full to Level 0 would break this? The Oracle docs insist that a Level 0 is identical to a Full except that level 1s can reference them as parents. This simply cannot be true based on what I'm seeing! I really want to keep the level 0 backups in play if possible. Level 1 cumulatives wont be useful without them.

    Here are the RMAN settings:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/opt/oracle/102/dbs/snapcf_ORCL.f'; # default
I'm not sure how changing ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES would help. Can you give me a little more information about how that setting comes into play in this situation?
I actually don't want an archive deletion policy here. We have this done in script three days after the needed archive logs have been applied. Is it possible that the we're deleting archivelogs too soon? Would we ever need to reach back in time to previously applied archive logs to apply new ones?
The %u does resolve, but this message isn't showing it. Here is that same log entry plus a few previous entries that show it does resolve.

  • Block Media Recovery and RMAN Incremental Level 1 backup

    Hi
I have read somewhere that Block Media Recovery will not work if a database is backed up using rman incremental 1. Is this true, and if so is there a work around?
I cannot seem to find this in oralce's documentation.
    Regards
    Me

    Hi,
    1) is Full Backup = Incremental level 0 backup?
    Yes
    2) When oralce say BMR does not work with incremental, will it work in the case I put forward. becuase Im doing an incremental 0...
But does you have the Archive logs available.. ?? If yes then it will Support.
    3) Im my case will BMR work...that is use Incr level 0 on Sunday and then use archive logs for mon, tues etc
    Yes, I believe.
@Hemanth .. am I right.. ?? Wait for your inputs...

  • Migrating from 2003 domain/forest level to 2008R2 with all DC's at 2008R2 and 2 other Domain External and Forest Trusts

Is there anything that needs to be done or considered when migrating from 2003 domain/forest level to 2008R2 with all DC's at 2008R2 with 2 other 2003 separate Domain incoming
and outgoing Trusts, one Trust that is a Forest Trust and the other is an External Trust? Is there any chance or risks that doing this upgrade will break either one of these Trust relationships? Some of the user accounts with SID history have been migrated
from both Domain Trusts to our domain. Any chance that this upgrade will break these relationships for users that are using SID history for access to folders and files in their old Domains? If so what can be done to protect these trusts and SID history, prior
to moving the Domain to 2008R2

    Hi,
    Based on my knowledge,
the Upgrade of the function level do not affect the trust relationship.
Besides, before you upgrade the Functional Level,
verify that all DCs in the domain are, at a minimum, at the OS version to which you will raise the functional level.
Once the Functional Level has been upgraded, new DCs on running on downlevel versions of Windows Server cannot be added to the domain or forest.
For more information about function level, we can refer to following links:

  • ACS and Domain Level

    Hello All,
Since I recently updated my MS AD domain lever from 2008 to 2008 R2, my ACS AD authentication no longer works. It appears the Cisco client does not support a 2008 R2 Domain Level. Has anyone ever reverted backwards ?
    Cheers
    Colin

    Hi Colin,
Could you please clarify which version of ACS you are using?
For example, if this is ACS 4.2 appliance with a remote agent installed on the Windows server, then Windows 2008 is not supported:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_solution_engine/4.2/installation/guide/remote_agent/rawi.html#wp308532
If this is ACS 5.2, then Windows 2008 R2 should be supported:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_system/5.2/user/guide/users_id_stores.html#wp1248491

  • How are Level 0 and Level 1 backups linked?

    Version:11g
I was going through the scripts in the post Two Questions on RETENTION POLICY
When you have a Differential Incremental backup strategy and When you run level 0 and level 1 backup scripts through different cronjobs from Sunday to saturday, during recovery, How will RMAN identify all these level 1 backups and its parent level 0 backup as one unit ? In the level 0 and its subsequent level 1 backup scripts, i don't see a clause which links level 0 backup and its subsequent level 1 backups?

    Hi Steve_74,
How will RMAN identify all these level 1 backups and its parent level 0 backup as one unit ?The information used during a restore is comming from the controlfile.
    Example
    select BACKUP_TYPE, INCREMENTAL_LEVEL
    from v$backup_set
Will determine the level 0 backup set needed according to your restore clause
    select INCREMENTAL_LEVEL, INCREMENTAL_CHANGE#, CHECKPOINT_CHANGE#
    from V$BACKUP_DATAFILE
    where file# = 1
Will determine which incremental(s) to apply on datafile 1 according to your restore clause.

  • Difference between Full backup and lncremental level 0 backup

    Hi,
What is the difference between Full backup and lncremental level 0 backup?
    what I understand is:
Actually incremental backup backups all the block containing data and skips the blocks that are unused.
Similarly full backup backups all the blocks containing data.(does it skip unused blocks ?????).
The only difference that I feel is that the level 0 backup is recorded as an incremental backup in the RMAN repository, so it can be used as the parent for a level 1 backup where Full database backup is not recorded in the Rman respository and cannot be used as parent for level 1 backup.
(if you still feel you have some more points to share regarding the difference between backups, I request to share with me)
    so my question here is
Can we use Incremental level 0 backup for full database recovery. Else is there any compulsion like we must only use full database backup for full database recovery?
can anyone throw light on this
    with regards;
    Boo

nowhere in this thread we talked about the image copies as we are only talking about the incremental backup.
The word "always" has a meaning. If you now wish to say, "well, RMAN will mostly use a level 0 or full backup, except when there are image copies around" then the word "always" doesn't fit your newly-revised description. That would make it an inappropriate word to use. And indeed, it's a factually wrong word to use.
If you want to get really picky about it, incidentally, the words 'datafile copy' appear in a post from me at Aug 4, 2007 6:03 PM whereas your post (in which the "always" word was used) only appears Aug 4, 2007 8:32 PM -a full 2 and a half hours (and and two posts) AFTER the concept of image copies had been mentioned.
But regardless of times: you can't just pretend image copies don't exist just because they haven't been mentioned so far in a thread. If you post "this is the way something ALWAYS works", you'd better be completely right about it, because "ALWAYS" is a big word. And there's no grey about this: either "always" is right, or it's wrong. And in this case, it's wrong: there are many times when RMAN will not do what you baldly asserted it would do. Image copies aren't some rare, exotic beast, either... so the occasions when your 'rule' breaks down are many and common.
until now I was simply beliving in what Oracle docs and metalink notes says
Try not to do that. Because you will fall into error after error if you do. Metalink is not the Holy Gospel of Oracle. Testing is, and it's because I've been testing this stuff since 1999 I will, on this occasion, decline your kind invitation to do "a small test". Been there, done that.
All of which leaves us discussing things that are of no relevance to the original poster, and I have no desire to take the thread off into silly areas of dispute. So I will leave it there, and I have nothing further to say on the matter. RMAN does what it does, and what it does is not what you said it would do. End of story.

  • Can i recover my all active directory domain computers and users from IFM and in-cooperate them in new forest ??

My only Active Directory Server on win server 2008 R2 with one domain controller crashed today. The only backup that i had was IFM media.
So what i have done till now to recover it is a follow
I reintalled window server but this time it is winserver 2012. I added AD DS role to it. Promoted it to Domain Controller. (functionality level is 2008 R2)
On second server i installed win 2008 R2 and trying to add additional domain controller from IFM to recover all of my domain users, computers and GPO's. but i am getting this error
Could not replicate the directory partition CN=schema, CN= configuration, DC=XXX, DC=com from the remote domain
the naming context specified for this replication operation is invalid
i dont know weather my approach is correct or not
    but my simple questions is
Can i recover my all domain computers and users from IFM and in-cooperate them in new forest ?? if yes how can i do that?? urgent help required.

yup exactly i created a new domain(in new forest) with same previous name in window server 2012 on SERVER-1. As ifm file that i had was generated from 2008 r2 so on second server i installed window 2008 r2 and tried to add role of additional domain controller
from ifm file on SERVER-2 using dcpromo /adv . every step went ok but in last step when it starts replicating domain controllers it poup following error
    Could not replicate the directory partition CN=schema, CN= configuration, DC=XYZ, DC=com. .  .
    and roll backs every thing.

  • Built-In Domain Level Groups dont have permissions on domain they should on 2012

    Hello,
First this is a brand new domain environment with everything running server 2012 datacenter edition.
Second I've never seen anything like the following occur in a domain environment. What I had is what appears to be a bad 2012 AD structure however so far all AD tests come back good. The problem is the built-in domain level groups do NOT offer any level
of access that they should. For example if I add a user in the administrators group, they don't have any permissions that group is supposed to have. THe same with every other builtin, backup operators, server operators, account operators and on and on. The
only way a user gets that level of access is if I add them into the domain admins group. As you can imagine this is crazy and not a solution for my help desk crew. (having them all be domain admins that is) So while I could very well use delegation, I need
to find out why my builtin groups don't function as they should.  Anyone have any ideas on what to check or where to look?  I'm at the point of opening a case with Microsoft on this.
    Thanks in advance

Because those builtin groups AREN'T domain level groups in the way you're thinking. The Administrators group on the server gives users administrator permissions on the server, but that doesn't mean permissions on the entire domain.
If you look in the user list in ADUC you'll see that while Domain Admins are a Global security group, Administrators is only a local group, eg local to the server (or more accurately since they no longer have local details, to domain controllers), so doesn't
grant permissions to anything outside of the domain controller. On all non DC's the machines have their own local administrators group which is independent of the domain one, and can have different memberships.
So if you only need a user to have permissions to the DC then administrators is fine, but if you need them to have access to the entire network, eg other servers and workstations, then they need to be members of domain admins. If you only want them
to have limited permissions then you need to grant those permissions either via a global/universal group, or by adding them to the relevant local group on each machine they need access to.

  • Why do my firewalls only use the domain username and password for login and enable passwords, not a different enable password like my switches do? The RADIUS config looks the same...

    Issue:
Cisco firewalls require only one level of password i.e. the domain username and password are used for both logging in as well as reaching global configuration mode.
    Background:
We have multiple Cisco network devices set up which authenticate to our Windows domain controller using NPS (Windows 2008 R2). The switches we have set up all function exactly as we would hope as they require your domain username and password to login to the device. They then require a separate password when you use the enable command, this is stored in Active Directory:
    Switches:
    Username:domain-username
    Password:domain-password
    SWITCH>enable
    Password:enable-password-in-Active-Directory
    SWITCH#
    Firewalls (as they currently are):
    Username:domain-username
    Password:domain-password
    FIREWALL>enable
    Password:domain-password
    FIREWALL #
With the firewalls however, they require your domain username and password first, and then your domain password again when using the enable command. I want the firewalls to use the enable level password that the switches currently use instead of the domain password again. The current configuration look like the following:
    Current switch configuration:
    aaa new-model
aaa authentication login default group radius local
aaa authentication enable default group radius enable
aaa authorization exec default group radius local
    aaa session-id common
    radius-server host 192.168.0.1 auth-port 1645 acct-port 1646
    radius-server source-ports 1645-1646
    radius-server key 7 1234abcd
    Current firewall configuration:
    aaa-server DC01 protocol radius
    aaa-server DC01 (outside) host 192.168.0.1
aaa authentication ssh console DC01 LOCAL
aaa authentication enable console DC01 LOCAL
    key 1234abcd
Any help would be great, thanks!

Cisco ASA works that way by design. You could remove "aaa authentication enable" and then you could use the "enable password" command to set your enable password.
But if you do that, then ASA would change your username to "enable_15". That would break Authorization and Accounting if you're using them. Let me clarify with an example
    Firewalls :
    Username:domain-username
    Password:domain-password
    FIREWALL>show curpriv
    Username : domain-username
    Current privilege level : 1
    Current Mode/s : P_UNPR
    FIREWALL>enable
    Password:enable-password-from-running-config
    FIREWALL #show curpriv
    Username : enable_15
    Current privilege level : 15
    Current Mode/s : P_PRIV
If you're using Authorization and Accounting it's recommended to stick with your current behavior.

  • Server 2012 std not able to see Domain, DC and DNS on Win SBS 2008 std Domain

    Hi There
I have a HP ML 110 G5 SBS 2008 std server as my DC on my network. I recently added a HP Microserver running Server 2012 std (with no roles or features installed) to act solely as a file server for a 3rd party program as the program was not running efficiently
    on the main server.
The problem I am having now is that the 2012 server keeps falling off the domain and cannot contact DNS server. I have also had to re-enable remote desktop several times. It also shows the 2012 Server as being on a private firewall profile and not on the
domain firewall profile but I suspect that this is part of the same problem.
the resulting problem that this is causing is that the local machines that need to contact an SQL database on the 2012 fileserver intermittently either time out or are very slow to connect.
    So far I have tried:
Switching from Static IP to DHCP.
Re-adding the server to the domain.
Stopping and restarting DNS services on the DC.
Checking physical Network connections and routing.
Putting the 2012 server into the same Organizational Unit as the 2008 DC.
Has anyone else encountered this problem when adding a 2012 server to a 2008 domain?  I have a feeling that the solution is probably something simple that I've overlooked, but I can't think what.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Full (Level 0) backup to local/NFS disk

I am new to SAP's BR*Tools, and need advice in configuring it to use RMAN.
    1. My backups are to be written to a staging area on our SAN.
    2. What specific parameters do I need to configure in the initSID.sap file to achive Full (Level 0) backup to local/NFS disk - preferably using RMAN?
    3. I have successfully performed a Full (Level 0) backup without RMAN to local disk.  Also, I have successfully done an incremental (Level 1) backup using BRTools with RMAN.  I want to get BRTools + RMAN based Full (Level 0) backup to local/NFS disk.

Thanks for the valuable info Mimosa.
In our company, they call the snapshot: copy of the production box to the box on the SAN network. The copy is made to the disc. Here the snapshot disc is on RAID 0 and production disc is on RAID 5. They do this every night.
In our company backup is : taking copy to the tape. they do this every weekend.
Its interesting that they do the 'split mirror on-line backup' daily during system is available to all users & jobs. Wondering if you have any details of this backup. What is the procedure called. What level is this copy done, on the database level, network functionality or sap functionality.....?
    Suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    BWer

  • Business Management Error: You are attempting to create a user with a domain logon that does not exist. Select another domain logon and try again.

    Hello,
Suddenly the working CRM is being stopped for some group of users.
I drilled down to the issue and have checked that the users from Domain in which CRM is installed are having CRM access.
But for other domain user having problem to access CRM.
I tried to add a user from a domain which is not of CRM domain then it gives following error.
"Business Management Error: You are attempting to create a user with a domain logon that does not exist. Select another domain logon and try again.
    <Message>LookupAccountNameW failed with error</Message> "
The change is made - AD group have upgraded Activer Directory server to 2012 R2
Please help as the Production CRM is not working for other domain user.

We have Activer Directory Structure like below.
    One Root Domain says A
and there are multiple child domain like B,C,D etc...
B,C and D are all in same level, they are child of A domain.
There are two way transitive trusts between A and all the child Domain.
But there is no trust in between B and C and so on.
Our CRM server is in B domain and B domain's user can access CRM but users of Domain C,D and so on can not access CRM.
