Domain name, host name - what goes where?

So to clear the pipeline and reduce the amount of configuration, I decided to get rid of my router and plug my server directly into the modem, thus using the server as the gateway/router for other computers in my home. Hopefully this will eliminate the need for an internal/private network DNS configuration as well as an external/public DNS configuration.
I have a registered public domain name of N.com and an associated public MX record for this domain which is also named N.com (as opposed to mail.N.com or something similar).
I reinstalled the Leopard Server software and when the setup asked for a "primary DNS name" I named it N.com (the same name as my registered public domain). I went into firewall settings in the Server Admin and "allowed"/opened port 25 as well as 80 for email and web services respectively.
When I looked in the Mail settings the default domain name is "localdomain" and the default hostname is N.com (the same as my registered public domain). Default user addresses are [email protected] I have no problem seeing the server's webpages from the internet, but I still cannot get any mail from the internet to show up in my user accounts.
What more do I need to do?

does the client's email system have something like Spam
Assassin filtering
incoming mail?
is this cgi script matt wright's formmail?
If yes to both- Spam Assassin is rating the formmail
generated email as spam
based on the subject line and default first line of text in
the message
body.
A fix-
1) hand edit the formmail script, find and change:
Below is the result of your feedback form
to any other text
2) use the optional field to change the subject line from the
default.

Welcome to Apple discussions.
I disagree with the premise in that article - "significant" is relative and depends on where you are. The only method I am aware of to "separate" would be to create partitions. OS X uses sophisticated algorithms to manage memory - both real and virtual. There are very few good reasons to partition an internal HD - and several that suggest you should not do that - absent a "good" reason.

When user open the Microsoft Office Project and connect to their PWA site, they will get the message "SSL Certificate common name (host name field) is incorrect".
Which area that I look start looking at? The client computer or the server itself? The cert expiration date was still long way to go.

Another "What goes where" thread

Hi guys
I am a little unsure how to configure "what goes where" on my main rig.
I have these discs:
Corsair 256 GB Pro (holds atm system, program files and pagefile)
Single 1.5 TB WD black (all kinds of stuff other than video)
Raid 0 on LSI 4 chnl. ctr. - 2 x Caviar 600 GB (holds now project files and maedia for PPRO)
Raid 0 on LSI 4 chnl. ctr. - 2 x Caviar 1 TB (holds render now)
SSD 240 GB for mediacache and preview for both AE and PPRO CS6
Should I add another single disc for project files alone and/or move the pagefile?

Jim, I completely agree considering your own system, but not on Ulf's system, which is way faster than yours.

If you want to add another two disks, I suggest:
C: 256 GB OS & programs & pagefile, SATA 6G
D: 240 GB Windows temp & media cache & AE cache, SATA 6 G
E: 2 x 600 WD in raid0 on the Marvell controller, previews. SATA 6G
F: 4 x 1 TB in raid5 on the LSI for media and projects
G: 1.5 TB exports and backup.
FYI, yesterday Bill gave me some experimental figures on the new test we are working on. Exporting a two hour timeline on an i7-2600K with a single OCZ Vertex4 SSD was around 6 times slower compared to a system with a heavy raid array. 84 seconds versus 14 seconds. Jim's suggestion to break out the raids you currently have will only slow down your system. In Jim's case he will not notice it, because his system is so much slower than yours, but you definitely will notice it.
The complicating factor in your case is the variety of disks you have and only a 4 port controller. The E: drive is way too big for previews only, but you don't have many choices for alternative uses and despite that they are older drives, in a raid0 they do give you nice performance. Going from 2 x 1 TB raid0 to 4 x 1 TB raid5 on that controller will give you added performance plus security against disk failure. Don't expect miracles in performance boost from 2x R0 to 4x R5, it will probably be only 25-35% or around that figure.

Question about Domain and Host name fields.

Hello! Just a quick question, I currently have the Mail Server up and running although I'm a little unsure about what exactly needs to be entered into the users email application.
I've tested POP and IMAP using the information that I entered into the "Domain Name" field, and into the "Host name" field, and everything worked great.
Example:
Incoming Mail Server: mail.example.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.example.com
Although while setting up another site and including the normal mail setup via DNS I've also noticed that I can send and receive email by using other sites that belong to me, as long as they are pointing towards our server.
Example:
Incoming Mail Server: mail.mynewsite.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mynewsite.com
So, I guess my question is whether its bad to use other websites in the incoming and outgoing mail server fields, or should I stick to the incoming and outgoing sites that I have listed in the Mail Server's 'Domain Name' and 'Host Name' fields?

There is no intrinsic 'meaning' to hostnames entered into the mail client. These are merely converted to IP addresses, using available dns, and then the mail client communicates with the IP address, using whatever port number is applicable for the service required (e.g., port 25 for smtp, port 110 for pop). So you could use the hostname woohooo.mydomain.com for the smtp or pop server, as long as it resolves to the correct IP.
This enables laptop users to have the one smtp/pop hostname, with lan dns resolving it to the local private IP and ext dns resolving same hostname to wan IP.
There is also no need to have two separate hostnames for pop and smtp. These are typically used by ISPs because they have separate servers doing each job - one doing pop, one doing smtp. If one server does both (and there is no likelihood of splitting the services later) then just the one hostname for pop and smtp is fine.

Lists: domain name host name?

In the 'General' tab of the Mail service window in Server Admin I've got the following:
Domain name: subdomain.mydomain.com
Host name: mail.mydomain.com
So my e-mail addresses like [email protected] work fine. But what's weird is that when I'm creating mailing lists , the internal users get added to it like this: [email protected]!? Why is it that? Why don't they get added with [email protected]?
Because the problem is if they send something to the list, it gets denied because the mailing list considers them non-members!
Any ideas what the problem could be and how to correct that?

"Adding a Subscriber to an Existing List
This is the same procedure as adding a user to a newly created list.
To add a subscriber to an existing list:
1 In Server Admin, select Mail in the Computer & Services list.
2 Click Settings.
3 Select the Lists tab.
4 Select the List to which you want to add a subscriber.
5 Click the Add button under the Members pane.
6 Enter the recipient’s email address.
The email address must match the return address of the recipient to post messages
without administrator approval.
If a user was added via the “Users and Groups” button, the email address in the list will
be in the form of “[email protected]”. If necessary, change the email address in
the mailing lists panel of Server Admin to match the return address used by the client.
7 Assign the subscriber privileges.
8 Click OK."
In other words, click in the user's email field and edit the address to suit - by default Mailman treats the list as belonging to the machine's host name, not to the email domain/sub-domain, which is the most logical since you could have multiple domains/sub-domains configured.

Domain Name, Host Name and VPN help

When I connect to my office VPN and try to ssh to one the machine I always have to put domain name, for example:
ssh -X snorlax.xx.yy.com
Recently my office changed their VPN settings and this started happening. Earlier I was able to just use snorlax instead of typing snorlax.xx.yy.com
My mail client has also stopped working from home saying same thing: host cannot be resolved .
I was reading online about domain name but I'm not too sure how does this work.
Is it possible to append xx.yy.com before host name before resolving?
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

You could also directly assign the IP to the hostname and skip the dns lookup if you add it to /etc/hosts.
If you need more fine-grained control over hostname resolution you can use a local dns server like dnsmasq, bind (named), pdnsd, or unbound

Domain name/host name/external hosts

I have an external website, for argument sake: waterworld.net
I want to host the mail internally, and i have set up DNS records with my name registrar that has the A record point to my external web host, and I have created an MX record of "mail.waterworld.net" which points to the ip address of where I am hosting the mail server.
Should i give my server a name that looks like a fqdn based on my website? or should it be called something simple like "server.loc"? currently, that is what I have done.
Then in the general settings of the mail server, under Domain name (where it reads: enter the LOCAL internet domain name), should I use:
server.loc
waterworld.net, or
mail.waterworld.net
Then the next option, Hostname, I am guessing that is one of:
waterworld.net, or
mail.waterworld.net
I have done a search, and the closest I have found was this post, but it's a different question based around a similar situation.

This field sets the primary domain of the server - the domain it accepts mail for. in this case it would make sense to set 'waterworld.net'.
Then the next option, Hostname,
This sets the name it advertises itself as when sending outgoing mail. This should be mail.waterworld.net.

What goes where ???

I've used cisco for some time now, and are realy happe with it, but there is one thing i need to get a hang of..
Traffic from one vlan going out to internet, and traffic comming back...
All i see is traffic comming from 1 ip out on internett going to my external ip on any given port.
Is there a way i can wee what inside ip address it's going against and what inside ip it's comming from ??
We have a asa5510 with aprox 8 vlan's on the inside and it would be nice to see what user is causing the internet traffic and why there are so many hit's on the firewall :-)

A basic packet capture configuration for ASA could look something like this
access-list TRAFFIC-CAPTURE permit ip 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 any
access-list TRAFFIC-CAPTURE permit ip any 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0
capture TRAFFIC-CAPTURE type raw-data access-list TRAFFIC-CAPTURE interface inside buffer 33500000 circular-buffer
Where
TRAFFIC-CAPTURE = Is the ACL that defines the traffic to be captured. The above ACL captures both directions of the traffic when the source is 10.10.10.0/24 and destination is "any" (and vice versa naturally)
10.10.10.0/24 = Is an example LAN network located behind "inside" interface (or is the interface network)
inside = Is the interface from which the capture is taken from
33500000 = Is pretty close to the max buffer memory you can have on any ASA firewall for a single capture You can make separate capture for each direction and later attach the capture files using wireshark
circular-buffer = Is the setting that will permit the ASA to overwrite the old captured data when the buffer is full. Capture will keep on working but old data will be overwritten as new data is being captured.
Naturally the above ACL is VERY broad. You can change the capture to only capture one "host" traffic. Or only capture TCP or UDP traffic only. You can limit to some certain destination IP addresses. Just control as you like with the ACL.
To show if traffic is hitting the capture
show capture
To show a specific capture and its contents
show capture
To copy a capture to external TFTP server
To be later opened with Wireshark for example
copy /pcap capture: tftp://x.x.x.x/.pcap
To remove a capture from ASA
Also removes the collected data
no capture

I have 2 phones on a single apple ID, and am getting email and texts to both phones... can i configue what goes where from the cloud?

My son shouldnt have his own Apple ID yet, and I dont want him getting my email and texts. Anyone know how to configure the cloud to stop this?

Well yes, but if you want to update those apps, you'd need to sign in under your old Apple ID to update them. It's really best to just stick to one Apple ID, or you'll run into association complications down the road.

GPOs can be applied from domain computers or domain users, so they have to be already member from the domain BEFORE GPOs are applied.
But you should think about using WDS, MDT or other installation mechanism so you can predefine the used machines names.

Go to transaction SMICM --> Go to (Menu) --> parameters --> Display.
Move acorss the list of parametes displayed and you will find the Fully Qualified hostname -
icm/host_name_full

Host Name Character Restriction

Hi Guys,
Is there any way to over come the 13 character specific as the max num of characters allowed in the host name while installing NW
I am trying to install NW2004s.
But my system is having a host name which includes the domain name and obviously goes beyond 13 characters.
Anyway to overcome this.

Generally it will look like this:
Computer Name: <name> (max 13 chars)
Domain <domain>
Full computer name: <name>.<domain>
Why your host name includes the domain name?
Also make sure that your computer name (host name) contains alpha-numeric chars.

Dialog Instance Host Name

Hi,
I am having a problem in SM51 where the dialog instance host name is the same as the central instance host name.

HHA56_ECP_00     HHA55          Dialog Batch Update Upd2 Spool ICM J2EE       Active
We have a central instance and a dialog instance installed on seperate nodes in a HA cluster. This problem only happens when the message server runs on the primary node. When the message server is failed over to the node where the dialog instance runs the hostname for HHA56_ECP_00 is HHA56 which is correct. This is effecting load balancing and prevents me from signing on through the Portal with the HTML gui.
I have checked the parameters for each of the instance profiles which are correct. The message server points to a virtual host and SAPLOCALHOST and SAPGLOBALHOST are correctly defined for each instance. I have setup each instance to use the logon group PUBLIC in SMLG. The hosts and services files are the same in each node of the cluster. I can successfully resolve the host names using DNS. Also the internal RFC destinations in SM59 are configured with the correct hosts.
Does anyone know where the data for these host names is maintained?

I discovered the network bindings were being accessed in the wrong order.
