Domain Name v IP Address

Hi,
I am running a windows 2003 network using a Microsoft exchange server. I have added imacs and other Macs to the domain with no problems they can see the exchange server and all accounts have their email addresses, however when I try adding an account using a mini Mac OSx 10.4.11 I enter the fully qualified domain name in the Search Domains area under system preferences/networking this binds with no problems like with the other machines but when I shut down and reboot I can no longer login unless I unbind and bind again. If I change the fully qualified domain name to the IP address of my server I can shut down login with no problems however when I do this I have no connection with Exchange. I would be very grateful is there was someone who could help me with this issue.

My belief is that DNS is a prerequisite for Mac OS X Server operations, and that a failure to get DNS stable and working causes problems and extra effort as various of the available and more advanced features are activated.
It has been my experience that failing to get DNS services going early enough makes for more work down the line as a network grows in scale and complexity. This is in general, and not just with networks involving Mac OS X Server boxes.
But this is your home server and it is not providing critical services and this is a configuration that will almost certainly serve as a valuable learning experience regardless of whether you choose to enable and use DNS services.

  • Changing Domain Name and IP address of a server

    We have an Oracle 10G server (running on Windows) that needs to have its domain name and IP address changed. I did a search on this forum and found similar threads to this one (e.g. Rename server name & change domain Just wondering if anyone has any other comments to make that haven't been mentioned previously.
    Looks like on the server side, we just have to change the listener and tnsnames.ora file. Anything else we have to worry about? (Unfortunately this is something I've never done before.)

    TomF:
    Yeah I know the listner SHOULD be the only thing that needs to know the server's network information. However, databases are big, complex pieces of software, and I'm just a bit paranoid that there's some system variable that needs to also get changed that I might be overlooking.
    You suggested I might need to change the global_name... Upon further research, I've found references to other variables that may need to change... local_listener, remote_listner, and dispatcher. (Note: I don't have the Oracle documentation handy so I can't verify how valid those are.)

  • Adding a Generic Email Address (Domain Name Only) to Address Book

    Is it possible to set up a generic email address (like @google.com) in Apple address book?
    I ask this because I have created a set of rules in Apple Mail to help filter out spam mail, and in my spam rules I check to see if the sender's email address is in my address book, in which case, I assume the incoming email is not spam.
    Now, when it comes to companies and organizations that I have dealings with, what I would like to do is add a generic email address to my Apple address book, that covers the whole company.
    By generic email address, I mean an address that comprises the domain name only: for example: if [email protected] is a specific email address, then the corresponding generic email address is @google.com.
    This is so that if I receive an email from another department or another individual in the same company, such as from [email protected] or [email protected] say, then these emails will also be considered to be in my address book, and thus get through my spam mail rules as well.

    Hello there, Kate.
    Apologies for your frustration. For your security the existing questions need to be answered before new ones can be created. The following Knowledge Base article provides some additional steps to try if you are unsure of the answers to the existing ones:
    Apple ID: All about Apple ID security questions

    Specifically:
    What should I do if I don't remember the answers to my Apple ID security questions?
    Try answering them at least once to see if you can get them right, even if you are not sure you remember the answers to your security questions.
    If you are confident you can't remember them, try one of the following:
    If you have three security questions and a rescue email address
    sign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to send an email to your rescue email address to reset your security questions and answers.
    If you have one security question and you know your Apple ID passwordsign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to reset your security question.
    If you have one security question, but don't remember your Apple ID password
    contact Apple Support for assistance. Learn more about creating a temporary support PIN to help Apple confirm your identity when you contact Apple Support.
    Note: If you have forgotten your password and answer your security questions incorrectly too many times in a row, you will be unable to try to answer your security questions for a period of time. During that time you will not be able to reset your password and will not have access to your account.
    Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Ip address to fully qualified domain name

    Dear friends, I am unable to get the correct fully qualified domain name from IP address. Please help. I have already spent more than a day searching for the solution on these forums and on google. So now only option remaining is help from you friends.
    I think I need to explain my set up first.
    The machine runs on Solaris8 & is part of corporate intranet. Java version 1.4.2. I am just a developer (cannot touch networking) and here is what I know about its network set up.
    The machine has a network alias ("bluesky"). So when I access it thru telnet using VPN, the command line shows "bluesky" at the prompt. There are at least two domain names that lead to this machine. One is bluesky.XXX.com and another is somesubdomain.yyy.com.
    I have a piece of existing Java code that produces the IP number of this
    machine. I want to convert it to its domain name (either bluesky.xxx.com or the other one).
    When I connect by VPN to the network and use nslookup against the IP on my XP laptop, it displays the full domain (somesubdomain.yyy.com). When I do the same thing after I join the intranet directly (not thru VPN), it again shows the full domain, but the different one bluesky.xxx.com.
    Some of the code I tried:
    Try 1:
    String ip = "";//valid IP here
    InetAddress ia = InetAddress.getByName(ip);
    String hostname1 = ia.getCanonicalHostName();
    String hostname2 = ia.getHostName();When I connect to intranet (without VPN) and run the above code on my laptop, hostname1 and hostname2 both generate "bluesky.xxx.com". This is what I want.
    But when I run the code on the remote machine, both strings are only
    "bluesky". When I run the code on my laptop after logging into the network using VPN, both produce the second fully qualified domain name. That would also be OK for me if I can get it on remote machine.
    Try 2:
    I added the following line before the above code (based on forum search).
    System.setProperty("sun.net.spi.nameservice.provider.1", "dns,sun");The result was same as Try1.
    Try 3:
    InetAddress[] iaa = InetAddress.getAllByName(ip);
    for(int i=0;i<iaa.length;i++){
         System.out.println(iaa.getCanonicalHostName());
         System.out.println(iaa[i].getHostName());
    When ran on laptop, it iterates only once (I expected it to iterate twice) and produces bluesky.xxx.com for both println statements.
    On remote machine, it again produces only "bluesky".
    It's getting frustating. Please help. Thanks.

    Following could be the reason
    When you are running the InetAddress api's to get the domain name on your laptop (windows machine), It is not hitting the DNS server. It is just returning the domian name what is mention in the Laptop configuration. If you are making a security check based on that, then anyone can spoof up his domain name locally and get the desired domain.
    When you run the application at some remote machine, it actually resolves the ip address with DNS server.
    You may want to use the following code to hit DNS server all the time. But with this I have a issue. I am not able to get the domain when I am on VPN. I have to find the exact reason for this issue.
    private static String domainFmReverseDNS(String hostIp) throws IOException
    //Record opt = null;
    Resolver res = new ExtendedResolver();
    Name name = new Name(getReversedIP(hostIp)+ ".in-addr.arpa");
    short type = Type.PTR;
    short dclass = DClass.IN;
    Record rec = Record.newRecord(name, type, dclass);
    Message query = Message.newQuery(rec);
    Message response = res.send(query);
    Record[] answers = response.getSectionArray(Section.ANSWER);
    if (answers.length == 0)
    System.out.println("reverseDns did not find anything");
    return ("NotFound");
    else
    System.out.println("reverseDns found the value :-)");
    return answers[0].rdataToString();
    private static String getReversedIP(String ip)
    StringTokenizer st = new java.util.StringTokenizer(ip, ".");
    String reversedIp=st.nextToken();
    while ( st.hasMoreTokens())
    reversedIp = st.nextToken()+"."+reversedIp;
    return reversedIp;
    }

  • How to transfer domain name to Adobe Catalyst

    I currently have a website/domain name and email address through Clikpic. I have now changed directions and designed my own website with muse. How do I go about transferring everything to Adobe.

    Hi,

  • Transfer of Domain Name

    Ready to publish my site, found a great Web Hosting company,
    but need to transfer Domain name. The new Web Hosting company
    requires that I approve in advance any charges that they will incur
    on my behalf for the transfer of the Domain Name. Being the
    existing provider for the name (the site isn't up yet) Yahoo, I
    don't know how many dollars this could be. Any ideas?

    Okay, you bought a Domain name from Yahoo. Now you have a
    site that you want to publish. How do you transfer your Domain Name
    to the Web Hosting company? That's the question isn't it?
    First of all, this will cost you nothing. You already paid
    for your domain name and you will pay your web hosting company a
    fee for hosting your web site.
    We are dealing with two kinds of servers here: Domain Name
    servers and web page servers. Your Yahoo Domain Name servers need
    to point to the web servers that belong to the web hosting company.
    That's what it means to transer your Domain name.
    The domain name servers are the computers that contain the
    information relating to your domain name, INCLUDING THE ADDRESS OF
    THE WEB SERVER that contains your web files. There is a primary
    name server and a secondary name server. Transferring your domain
    name essentially means supplying the name servers with the address
    of the web servers that contain your web files so web users will be
    directed to your web site.
    Instructions on how to transfer your Domain name (or, in
    other words, how to edit your name servers) is on the Yahoo web
    site. Your web hosting company has probably provided you with DNS
    server addresses (primary and secondary). If not, you need to get
    that information. You take that information and follow the
    instructions on the Yahoo site for editing your name servers.

  • How to I get my host email at GoDaddy to work after I've changed the name servers to redirect my domain name that I purchased to my Business Catalyst Site?

    I use a mac and I just recently changed my name servers with my purchased domain name at godaddy.com. As a result, I am no longer able to receive emails in my domain name's email address as I have to change some info with Adobe according to godaddy.  They have sent me an email with all the info that needs to be changed and I was wondering if someone can walk me through it. Thanks! :-)

    I guess, you have resolved the issue on your end.

  • DNS - Can't resolve website address because it is the same as domain name:

    Our internal users can't resolve a web address because their domain name is the same as the address.  I'm hoping I can get some advice on what I should do on the DNS server.  My first challenge is, when I look-up address on Arin.net it does not
    come up with anything. CUAMERICA.COM is the domain.  I don't even know the ip address it is resolving to.

    If I ping www.cuamerica.com I get 38.108.184.171, so in your DNS, in the Forward Lookup Zone for CUAMERICA.COM create a new Host (A) record, call it
    www and give it the IP address of 38.108.184.171

  • How to retrieve the fully qualified domain name from the IP Address?

    Hi,
    How can i retrieve the commplete host name along with the domain name (something like x.y.com) of a server?
    I tried using the InetAddress.getHostName(), getCanonicalHostName(), etc but it retrieves me only the host name (only x in x.y.com)
    Is there a way to solve ?
    Thanx and Regards

    getInetAddress() of Socket Class will return the remote IP address in a InetAddress object.
    Use the object with the getCanonicalHostName() of InetAddress class.
    I may be wrong though. Cheers!

    Hello,
    We want to change the name / IP address and domain name for BOE Server, please could you indicate the steps or procedure to follow?
    I need your help
    thank you

    If it's 3.1 just change them, shouldn't cause any issues if by domain name you are referring to changing the domain the computer belongs to. If you are changing your domain for AD authentication then you will may have to take quite a few steps if the old domain is going away. Let us know.
