Domain Registrar Preferences

Hello All~
I've been thinking of getting a personal domain name for my iWeb site that I publish through Mobile Me and was wondering if I could get a recommendation on which companies everyone uses and or would recommend. I'm trying to find something that is going to be relatively inexpensive and reliable. Thanks!!
Corina~

If you are publishing to MobileMe it doesn't really matter too much but a lot of people use:
Goddady - http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/search.asp
Namecat - http://namecat.com/
I register all my domain names through my hosting company so that I can manage all my domains and sites in one control panel. They also automatically renew them for me which helps a lot when you have several.

  • Domain Registrar's for use with own DNS?

    Hi Everyone,
We have a DNS server on-site and want to use it to host our own records. We have setup the necessary zones etc. Local requests work well, (our website is hosted on-site by a separate dedicated IIS server). When users connected to our LAN go to 'harrodsschool.co.uk'
they are taken to the website as per expected, but the website can't be accessed from outside. We need to forward DNS requests to our server. We have not yet registered a domain with anybody, the only DNS registrars I know of, only allow you to use their
managed DNS services. Are there any that will redirect requests to our server for us?
    Thanks,
    Rowan

    Hi Rowan,
If we want to resolve our domain name through internet, we need to purchase a domain name.
After we  purchase the domain name, we need to point a NS record to your DNS server.
For detailed information, please consult with your ISP.

  • Domain Name

Can I transfer my domain name with Muse or Business Catalyst?

    ChinaSmith,
Your not able to transfer your domain, but what you will need to do is point the nameservers of your domain registrar (i.e. godaddy etc.) to the BC nameservers. While your setting up the trial site in BC, your site url will be sitename.businesscatalyst.com This option will be open to you once you are ready for your site on BC to go live. These steps are accomplished through BC's domain management features.
You may or may not understand what nameservers are, but the process is quite easy and little time is necessary for implementing. The only time constraint is the default time frame most registrars will communicate that it may ake up to 24 hours. To be honest I have seen this process complete within minutes.
From my understanding you are able to design your site with Muse and integrate it with BC. Personally, I prefer DW for integrating with BC, but the choice is yours dependent on your skills, and preferences.

  • Keeping Domain Name Email Address After Hosting With MobileMe

    Hi,
I am looking for any advice with regard to my website, which I now host with MobileMe. Prior to the transfer I had a Domain specific email address, which I now can no longer use. I receive the emails, but when it comes to answering, I can only answer as my .Mac account name.
Can anyone help, as my previous Domain holder wants about US$100/year to maintain this facility?
    Cheers,

Whether you get e-mails from the type of [email protected] or not depends on your domain registrar.
What you're paying now is also the hosting which is needed to have real mailboxes.
Usually at domain registrars you get MailForwards which means that I send e-mails at [email protected] which forwards e-mails to another address like [email protected] and you can set [email protected] to be forwarded to another e-mail (if you want). So basically MailForwards aren't real e-mails themselves. You can also set *@yourdomain.com so all e-mails sent to no matter which e-mail @yourdomain.com gets sent to [email protected] (no matter what people put in front of the @yourdomain.com).
The problem is that if you set up CNAME for your domain usually E-Mail gets broken. But there’s a trick to avoid that (pointed out to by Earl and originally posted by Seanomich on the Apple Discussion Forums). Mainly that’s it:
    1. www.yourdomain.com is different from yourdomain.com
    2. Domain registrars handle them as completely different
    3. The trick is to set up CNAME for www.yourdomain.com (as of Chapter 2 of this page)
    4. For yourdomain.com set up a WebForward instead (as of Chapter 1 of this page) pointing it to www.yourdomain.com
    5. Now yourdomain.com is free to be used for e-mails
If your domain registrar doesn't provide this feature (MailForwards without having to pay the hosting) you could manage your domain using ZoneEdit (which is free) and you will get MailForward e-mails.
You will then also be able to send e-mails from [email protected]. All you need to do is write [email protected] in the Preferences of the Mail application where it says E-mail (same on the iPhone). In addition to that if you use a gmail address as real address behind the [email protected] MailForward you will also be able to send e-mails from the web as [email protected] since it allows to apply aliases.
Bottom line: you can have e-mails like you want
If MailForward isn’t enough for you, you probably need a hosting package (other than MobileMe) along with your domain and that's where you have to pay the 100$ a year...

  • How to Publish Multiple Websites Using Domain Masking

Let's say I have a mobileme acct called applesoranges, but then I decided not to use this name for my website. Using iweb, I have created a different website called blueberry.com, and was able to figure out how to set up my personal domain and then mask appleoranges so that only blueberry.co, appears.
I now want to add another website called strawberry.com. With one mobileme acct (applesoranges), is it possible to host 2 separate websites, each of which is masking the original mobileme acct? How does one set up 2 separate websites using iweb (each masking the original acct name)?
    Many thanks!

For every MobileMe account you can only use the personal domain name option and CNAME only once. You enter your first domain name into your MMe account and then go and set up CNAME forwarding at your domain registrar to forward to web.me.com. For any other sites that you create, you need to go to web forwarding. You set-up the other domain names by using masked web forwarding and point them to web.me.com/username/sitename and by masking these will just show your domain name address and not your MobileMe/iWeb url.
Make sure that you separate out your sites, as it will be easier. You can either duplicate the domain.sites files and have one site per a domain file or use a program called iWebSites to help you manage multiple sites.
You also have the option of not using MMe and you can publish to a folder instead and upload directly to each domain hosting space. This gets away from the problem of how to forward sites to iWeb/MMe.

  • Change domain name in URL box

    Hi there,
I have updated the domain name for a client's website and followed the proceedure from other discussions I saw on the subject. It works fine to export and publish using the udated domain name, but the old name still shows up in the URL box on the live site. How do I update that so the new domain name shows up after the site is opened?
    Thank you so much!
    Mary

    Hi Mary,
Your domain agsgaming.com (managed by NAMECHEAP.COM) has a 302 Redirect setup to forward to http://www.americangamingsystems.com.
You would need to contact your domain registrar to fix this redirect for you or help you fix that.
    Cheers,

  • Custom domain name pointing issues

    Hi
I've set my custom domain name for my webpages and it is working fine - www.domain.com points to my iweb site. But how can i make sure that domain.com (without the www.) also points to my iweb site? I know I could change settings on my domain registrar (godaddy) and create an A record but it requires an IP address to point to...
    Any ideas?

But how can i make sure that domain.com (without the www.) also points to my iweb site?
Please read the 3rd bullet on the godaddy instructions
    http://help.godaddy.com/topic/163/article/4100
I know I could change settings on my domain registrar (godaddy) and create an A record but it requires an IP address to point to...
If you want to do it that way, you use the IP for web.me.com You can find this at any of the countless websites which let you look up IP's.

  • Post .mac site to another domain name still on mac server?

I have both a domain name that is .mac and a .biz url. I do not have another server to upload to (I just own the domain name), and would like to use my .mac website designed using iweb '06 v.1.1.2 and load it on the mac server but have the .biz url be the url the public will use... this is for a business website. How do I do this?
The directions in all the help files assume the use of another server holding the domain name... maybe this is a requirement, but seems to be a waste to have a .mac account but have to have such a convoluted url for the public.
    Is this possible?

    Hi there,
little correction: they don't assume having another server. They assume having it registered from a domain registrar. Which is quite different. You have to tell the domain registrar to point the domain to .mac.
This page may help... At least I hope it does...

  • Adding a domain name from Plesk Parallels?

I am completely lost in adding a domain name which I have bought to Muse. I have control panel access with Plesk Paralles but I have no idea what to do to make it all connect? Does anyone know? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks

Ok, Sorry for the misconception earlier. In that case, you will need to replace the nameservers at your domain registrar to the following nameservers for BC:
    ns1.worldsecuresystems.com
    ns2.worldsecuresystems.com
    ns3.worldsecuresystems.com
    As explained here -> http://kb.worldsecuresystems.com/kb/change-domain-name-site.html
So get Plesk support help to replace the nameservers and in BC, Add a domain to your site in BC under Site Settings -> Site Domains -> New Domain.
This will help you redelegate the site domain to BC nameservers and the domain added will work to show the site with BC.
FYI: In case, you would like to keep an external nameservers/DNS provider to manage your domain name and want to point this to BC servers, Check this -> http://kb.worldsecuresystems.com/157/bc_157.html

  • Personal domain hosted at MobileMe - but not showing up.

You guys have already helped me out so much on this forum, so thank you.
Here's the problem. Several days ago, I transferred my domain to MobileMe and changed the CNAME info at Network Solutions (my domain registrar). But for some reason, when I visit:
    www.barrycooper.com
I'm still getting the Network Solutions "under construction" page, rather than my iWeb site. When I checked Network Solutions, I note that only the CNAME alias has changed (to web.me.com.barrycooper.com). The IP Address fields all point to the under construction page.
Any idea what I might have done wrong here?

Firstly, you have not transferred your domain to MobileMe - Apple does not host domain names, only websites, so you domain name registrar still controls your domain name - i.e. Network Solutions - Apple just host your site and not your domain name.
What you decided to do was to link the two, so you have forwarded your domain to your MME hosted website.
To get it to work, you need to log into your MobileMe account and enter your domain name under the personal domain name settings.
You then need to go to Network Solutions and select your DNS settings. The alias for your CNAME should be your domain name - www and @ and then this should be forwarded to your host web.me.com. What you have there at present is incorrect so it will not work. Go and change these settings and it should work.

  • Looking for the most econmical way of tying domain name to mobileme iweb

Hi all, I currently have a few sites that are hosted on mobileme, and I used the DynDNS services to 1) register a domain name (15$) and 2) create a webhop (CNAME) from the domain to the mobileme site (30$). So that's 45$ per year per site. Is there a more economical way of doing the same thing (without running my own server)? I have a handful of brochure sites to post, and I am looking to cut costs. Thx!!!
    coocoo

No. Look at GoDaddy and see and I think that you will find that what OT has said is correct.
If you purchase a domain name from them, depending on what ending it is - .com, .co.uk, .net etc, then you just pay for the cost of the registration for one year or two years, which does work out at $7.95 per YEAR depending on the domain name you get and this will be excluding any hosting or e-mail packages. E-mail does cost extra though.
If you just register your domain name, then you can use CNAME forwarding or web forwarding at no extra cost. So none of this adding $29 for the privilege of using CNAME forwarding - GoDaddy does not do this and you get it when you register your domain name.
Once you have the domain name registered, all you do is set up a new CNAME and point the 'www' part of your domain to web.me.com which is your MobileMe host and it will be forwarded to your site.
I use GoDaddy myself and have no problems whatsoever.
If you have one MobileMe account, then you have the option of entering a domain name into the Personal Domain Name settings - you can do this once for every MobileMe account and can then use CNAME forwarding at your domain registrar to forward your domain name to your MobileMe account.
However, you can still publish as many sites as you like to MobileMe, but your url will be http://web.me.com/username/sitename, unless you then use masked or unmasked web forwarding to link your domain name to it if you wish.

  • Instructing clients on domain name transfer

I was wondering what the easiest way is to instruct a client how to transfer their domain name from a previous host to a new one. Do you simply give them the information fom the "Whois" lookup? Do you contact the previous host yourself? What do you do?

So that would be asked with this question:
How do I get access to the domain registration account so that I can change the DNS pointers?
And the answer is either of the following -
    *  Get the domain registration account login information from the client (they were given this when they registered the domain name), log in to the account, and edit the DNS pointers.
    OR
    * Have the client contact the domain registrar and ask them for the domain registration login info.  They may have to do a song and dance to get this, but they will get it.  Have them give that info to you.  Then continue with the first item above.

  • Webpage using host name without domain

Installed 10g successfully but when I try to naviagte the url is only using the computer host name without the domain. I keep getting the DNS_ERROR. If I manually append the domain in the webpage it works.
    Installed on Solaris 10.

I doubt this has anything to do with Lion Server. it sounds more like the client settings.
Did you add your domain to the list of search domains (System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS).
This list is the list of domains the client will search when looking up a unqualified hostname. Add your domain to this list.

    Hi hg01,
According to your description, I notice that you installed Exchange server on a DC.
It is not recommended to install Exchange server on a DC. I suggest install Exchange server on a member server. More details to see:
Installing Exchange on a domain controller is not recommended
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms.exch.setupreadiness.warninginstallexchangerolesondomaincontroller(v=exchg.150).aspx
About your issue, cannot send and receive externally, I suggest make sure the DNS can be resolved first.
Then, check whether Outlook Anywhere has been enabled. If not, please enable it on both Exchange server and Outlook client side.
Last, try to configure both Send Connector and Receive Connector.
More detailed error message will be helpful for the further troubleshooting.
    Thanks
