  • Is Domain Registration Necessary?

I'm trying to set up a server for a medical lab, which would have three clients. They simply want the server to function as a file server, and to help manage their backup needs. They also want to access the server outside their local network.
I'm thinking that the best way to go would be to set up the server as an Open Directory Master. Since it simplifies DNS, and everything else associated with DNS (right?).
So my question has to do with the need to register a domain for this server. Is it necessary?

Excellent, David. Thank you for your cogent
    response.
    I have a couple of follow-up questions.
Does Domain Registration bring with it certain
advantages? I suppose it does, if the server will
host web pages for the little group.
If you have any services which you want to make available to the 'public' then it can be beneficial to have your external public DNS to be the same domain as the internal one - but not absolutely necessary.
Mail services - yes. Not only because you want your server hostname to be part of your public domain (but mail services can still run fine without this) but you can then have portable clients get the one mail hostname in their settings: when the laptop is outside the LAN, the hostname resolves to the public WAN IP; when inside LAN, it resolves to the LAN IP.
Web: not necessary. You could have the public DNS pointing to your WAN IP and then just have the website host address in the web-services pane.
The other thing I wonder, if I've been using
    testserver.test.com, can I easily change the server's
name, if I want to re-do the server with something
other than a practice name? So far I've set up 1)
DNS, 2) Open Directory, and 3) AFP. In re-doing it,
I guess I would turn off the services for AFP and
Open Directory, and then change the DNS. Then I
would go back through and alter AFP and Open
    Directory. Would that be correct?
You can demote from ldap master to standalone (deletes all users in ldap directory), change DNS and IP/hostname using terminal command "changeip", and then promote back to master. Search for 'changeip' both here and in Open Directory forum. HOWEVER, if it is currently just a test installation I would strongly suggest just reinstalling everything and starting again - as well as ensuring everything is 'clean', the repeat of the install will be educational

  • Domain Registration Good Rates and Local Hosting??

I need to buy a domain name, but don't want to put more money into it than I need to. I'm going to host locally, so I will need a site that will allow me to sign up and host locally. Any good domain registration sites that fit this criteria?

  • Adobe Should Offer Domain Registration

Adobe should offer domain registration so we can avoid haveing to re-direct the DNS servers.
Also, Adobe really, really needs telephone support for those rare problems we have with hosting.

  • Forwarded to godaddy domain. works on safari but not explorer or firefox

I finally figured how to use my website so that when you type in the domain it redirects to the mobile me website. However, it is working just great on safari but not on explorer or firefox.

I have always used GoDaddy's forward and masking utilities and its worked great. When Apple updated iWeb to 08 with the ability to auto forward, I had lots of issues and thus went back to setting up my GoDaddy preferences to auto-forward and mask my site. GoDaddy has the very best phone support on the planet which makes up for one of the worst websites on the internet. Call them up and have them walk you through auto-forwarding and masking. Check out my site at: www dot jennifersheehan dot com. Hope that helps

  • Domain Registration

I've got a client who has registered his domain name with a domain name registering company.
I've bought some web space to house the website....do I have to contact the domain name registration company and provide them with the server details of where they need to point the domain name or is this something that can be done without their involvement?
Usually I start from fresh, get the webspace and domain name from the same source.

They may say they understand and accept it but are totally oblivious to anything to do with the internet in my experience.....mention a 'farm' and that will just confuse them even further.
I know what youre saying but I like to keep my customers updated at all times and try to give them precise information rather than 'it could be this' or 'it could be' that type of attitude. I really hate that so I try and treat people I do business with how I want to be treated myself.

  • Setting cross-domain cookies in Safari using iframe

    Hi,
I want to load url inside iframe. It works in all browsers. Except in safari browser.
    I have written code as
    On designer page
    <div id="containFrame" runat="server">
    And on code behind
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
                GenerateFrame("http://www.dotnetobject.com");
    private void GenerateFrame(string urlsrc)
                string frame = "<iframe id='ifrm' style='width: 956px; height: 500px'";
                frame += " src='" + urlsrc + "' ></iframe>";
                containFrame.InnerHtml = frame;
I am using safari browser version 5.1 (7534.50).
Here in Preferences (Privacy tab) for Block Cookies have three options as
    1. From third parties and Advertiser
    2. Always
    3. Never
If I selects option as Never then this code work successfully. But Not for 1 and 2 option.
Here my quesion is, how to handel this problem cross-domain cookies problem?
    Thanks,
    Bhanudas

sadly... i couldn't find other workaround than making a new subdomain of the main domain.
i have abc.com that embed def.com in an iframe. the only workaround so far is make a new subdomain def.abc.com and map that as a CNAME to def.com.
when i call the page in iframe, i call def.abc.com, which matches the same domain, thus cookies can be read or written.
this becomes a problem with you have a lot of different websites to embed, and not all site owners care to do binding of the new host on their webserver.

  • Need help with Domain Registration and Hosting

    Hi Folks,
I have a few questions which I hope some of you may be able to help me with.
    1) I would like to register a domain name, which registrars might some of you suggest, as a mac user? Nice interface, easy to use, not pushy sign up process, etc.
    2) I would also like to sign up for hosting with my new domain name, so that I can have an FTP site, CalDav support, IMAP e-mail with my domain name, and a very nice webmail app. I have been looking around and found a lot, but none that are nice to use, they all look like windows 95ish, etc.
I will be hosting the actual website on my .mac space, but running the FTP through the hosting site, and would like to run the IMAP e-mail via the host as well. That's about it, I'm sure some more questions will follow soon, but I do want to register my domain ASAP, but at the same time find a host, because I know sometimes the registration is free when you sign up with a host, so would prefer not to spend double for something, sort of.
    Thanks for all you help!

Check out GoDaddy. There cheap and offer the services you want. http://GoDaddy.com there website probably isn't the easiest to use, but their prices sorta compromise for it. If your looking for a more upscale provider then check out http://www.machost.com/ and http://macosxhosting.com/

  • Domain registration with godaddy

I just finished my first site that I am gonna be hosting on business catalyst (through my creative cloud subscription).
I registered my domain name with godaddy
But I canot figure out how to point the name to my catalyst site.
Figuring out what settings to modify is confusing me. Not sure where I need to add the ns1.worldsecuresystems.com and so on.
Can someone please assist me with this?
    Thanks.

The way I did it is as follows:
    Go to:
    1. My Account
    2. Products.
    3. Domains.
    3. Press the Launch button associated with the specific domain.
    4. Nameservers (8th icon at the top, left to right)
    5. Set Nameservers
    6. Check "I have specific nameservers for my domains"
    7. Replace Nameserver field with BC's namesarver ns1.worldsecuresystems.com and so on.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firefox says domain has expired

When I go to acs-dental.com I can not go to the correct web site because firefox says the domain has expired. I checked with the acs web site and they say their end is working fine and I need to check with my internet provider.

When I visit the link you supplied, i get:
''This domain has expired. If you owned this domain, contact your domain registration service provider for further assistance. If you need help identifying your provider, visit http://tucowsdomains.com.''
I also tried this in Chrome and Safari and got similar results.

  • Multiple Web Sites with Personal Domain Names - Overview

I have read through the last 10 pages of these discussions and have almost worked this out, but I need some help.
    Problem:
I want to publish and edit two separate web sites with their own, individual, personal web addresses
from the same user account on the same Mac using iWeb '08 (2.0.2) and my .Mac account
    _So far:_
I have purchased and registered the two domain names (with Cheap-DomainRegistration.com)
I have configured the CNAME to point to web.mac.com, and "Set up a Personal Domain" in iWeb successfully, but using a separate Mac for each web site.
    The two sites work great.
_What (I think) I need to know:_
(excuse me for copying these posts out, but I can't find a way to link them to this post)
    1) Should I be using iWebSites as suggested by Old Toad (posted Jan 24 in response to StAnNe's "Multiple Websites--HELP!!!")?
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
    2) Should I be using Mireille's approach (also posted Jan 24 in response to StAnNe's "Multiple Websites--HELP!!!")?
Yes you are correct in the thought that with a family pack you can use different accounts and that is the easiest way to upload with one click to .mac. But it is still possible to publish differents sites to one .mac account if that is all one has. Even if the sites are in one domain file each purchased mysite.com domain name purchased can be pointed to a different page in the site
    Look at it this way
    Original Poster has
site1 page 1 page 2 and so on
then he/she has brothersite page 1 and so on.
They each have a domain name purchase wherever
then site1domain.com is forwarded to site 1 page1
and brotherdomain.com is forwarded to brothersite page 1.
Even though both sites are in the same file they do not have anything to do with each other.
This is one possibility there are others but for a novice user this could be the way to go for simplicity.
(Mireille, if you're there, can you clarify what you said - thank you)
    3) Would I use Roddy's fix (posted Jan 23 in response to canadensis' "Publishing Multiple Websites?")?
Here's an example of how you can separate two websites that are on the same domain file.
    Quit iWeb
Create a new folder on your desktop and call it "iWeb Sites".
Inside this folder create two more - Website A, Website B.
Go to Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb and copy your domain file - command C
Paste this into folders A and B - command V - and also paste a copy of it somewhere else - like in Docs - in case you make a mistake!
Double click the domain file in the folder Website A - this will launch iWeb.
In the left column, delete site B, save and quit iWeb.
Double click the domain file in the folder Website B to launch iWeb.
Delete website A, save and quit.
Drop the iWeb sites folder into your Home Folder.
If you want quick access to this folder you can highlight it and do command L to create an alias to leave on the desktop.
From now on, to launch any site in iWeb you open its folder in the iWebsites folder and double click the domain file.
This is not necessary when you are working on only one site as iWeb saves the domain file of the last site you were working on to Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb. When you open the iWeb application, the last site you worked on will be launched.
    Summary:
I'm not sure if some of the answers in previous discussions allow for personal domain names, which is what I need.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as I'm getting bogged down.
    Many Thanks,
    Jeff

When you said, "you don't need to do CNAME for both sites…", would this method still allow me to use personal web addresses for both sites?
Yes. With "Ordinary Forwarding" you normally just type your .Mac url (web.mac.com/username/sitename) into a form at the place where you have your name.
I thought I was using 'web.mac.com' as the 'www' CNAME (alias) for my personal domain name (web address), so that when someone typed in my personal domain name they would 'go' to the domain registration location, which would then pass it on to the .Mac server, where my web site is hosted.
That's exactly right. It's just not the only way to do that. Ordinary Forwarding is another way, but it differs in terms of what appears in the address bar of the browser. Either you will see web.mac.com/username/.... or, if you add "masking", you will see your personal name for all pages. The CNAME method results in a address bar that reads www.myname.com/sitename/pagename.html.
    Am I way off?
    All help gratefully received,

  • Multiple domains names and web sites with only one SLS and one static IP

I tried to find a post on this topic but I still can't find what needs to be done.
SLS is configured for one domain with one web site and it's working well. We will call it domain1.com. Here is the config:
    Static IP: 69.x.x.x
    DNS setting under Server Admin:
    hostname: server.domain1.com
Two DNS entries under domain1.com with:
    www - alias - server.domain1.com
server - Machine - 10.0.1.x (fixe IP for server on LAN)
    Web settings under Server Admin:
    server.domain1.com - 10.0.1.x - Port 80
Domain1.com is managed with DynDNS Custom DNS Service with 1 record:
    domain1.com - A-record - 69.x.x.x
I want to host a second domain (for a website) called domain2.com. It's also registred at DynDNS and I have custom DNS setting to configure.
What's need to be done to have both domains with seperate web site on SLS under DNS and Web settings (beside the fact that I will have 2 different folders with the website files in it). I understand that I will need a new entry in the DNS for the new domain (domain2.com) and also an entry in the Web Service pane. But what are the details.
    Thanks.

  • Outlook Web Access not working in Safari or any other browse

When I try to access OWA from ANY browser, Safari, IE, or Firefox, I get the same error.
"You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Make sure your User Name and Password are correct, and then try again."
When I log in from my PC, I don't have this problem.
The IT guys at work claim that they won't support Mac problems. Typical....
    Any thoughts?

Don't know if this will help, but are you providing the correct credentials via Safari? When you use IE, you are presented with a dialog box that asks for userid, password, and domain name. Safari and other browsers will only ask for the userid and password. Consequently, when using these browsers, you need to preface your userid with the domain name followed by a backslash. For example:
    mydomain\jsmith
While Safari works with OWA, it has an annoying habit of requesting the username and password frequently as you navigate through OWA. I also find that I occasionally have to to click twice on a button to get Safari to activate a command such as reading a message or the Send button. I now use Camino for OWA access. It's cleaner and faster.

  • How can i edit the domain name ?

    Hello,
I tried to register my first website through business catalyst. The domain name i took was www.wildixel.com . But, when i am trying to open the website it open other website with the same name. I guess it was already taken. Now i want to edit the domain name. Please let me know how can i.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
Could you please explain more what you are trying to do and have done?
You can not purchase a domain name through Business Catalyst so you would have not obtained a domain you listed there. You have to by it from a domain registra.
If you have just entered a domain into the domain manager of your website but have not purchased the domain, this will not work. You have to obtain the domain first.
If you have got your domain, have you gone into the domain settings of BC and added the domain in? Have you gone to the domain registra and changed either the A-record or the NS records to point to your BC site?
