Don't change 1st slide of a show created in iPhoto '08 and converted to '09

I discovered that a slideshow that was created in iPhoto '08 and then converted to '09 (i.e., the whole library file was converted) can cause iPhoto to freeze if you change the 1st photo in the show, e.g., by moving another photo into the 1st position (iPhoto doesn't crash -- it just fails to respond to all mouse interactions, and you can't even kill iPhoto via Apple-CMD-Q).
So -- warning if you have '08 slide shows converted to '09 -- don't try this!!!
I have submitted a bug report to Apple's iPhoto support, but my guess is that the bug is due to such a weird combination of circumstances that they won't place high priority on fixing it. In case you're interested in further details, here's the description I wrote in my bug report:

I recently bought a new iMac with Leopard and iLife '09. I copied several iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5 -- I believe that's the latest version available for OS X 10.4) library files from an old PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11. When I opened them in iPhoto '09 iPhoto asked me to convert them to the new version and I did so. I can view, edit, run slideshows, etc. of all my updated iPhoto '08 library files fine in iPhoto '09 -- except for one very annoying bug!
When working in iPhoto '09 with a slideshow that was created in iPhoto '08 and converted to '09:
When I move a slide in the slideshow browser to the 1st position of the slideshow and then either Play the slideshow or try to select other photos in the slideshow browser that causes iPhoto to freeze (not crash, there is no Crash Log file). iPhoto stops responding to mouse clicks, there's no way to unhide the Dock with the mouse, and I can't even kill iPhoto with the Apple-CMD-Q keystroke (to terminate iPhoto I use Apple-CMD-TAB to switch to a Terminal shell, find the process id, and then use the shell's "kill -9 pid" command). When this happens I find that after moving a slide to the 1st position in the browser the 1st position in the browser shows a blank instead of the photo that was moved there. When I click on other photos (other than the 1st one) the image gets refreshed with the wrong photo (the one next to it instead of the correct one). However, I have been able to change the 1st slide by deleting it.
It seems that this error only occurs when moving or changing the 1st slide. Making changes to the other slides in the slideshow doesn't cause any problems.
This error also happens when I make a duplicate in iPhoto '09 of a slide show that was originally created in iPhoto '08 and then converted to iPhoto '09 and try to change its 1st slide.
When working with slideshows created in iPhoto '09 none of these problems never occur.

I have been having this same problem even with slideshows created in iPhoto '09. I also reported it to Apple Support. I found a work-around in the meantime, and it might work for you as well.
First of all I discovered the problem when I moved the last thumbnail into the first position. What eventually worked was moving that thumbnail into the second position, and then moving the first thumbnail into the second position. For some reason this did not cause a freeze, and the slideshow played.
As for iPhoto not responding to mouse clicks, I had the same experience. I placed my cursor on the desktop and clicked on it. This enabled me to access the drop down menu from the Apple icon and then I was able to use the force quit option.

You can't. The only way to get songs in the Music app is to sync from a computer or to download from iTunes.

I hit vertical text in my iPhoto Book and now I can't change it back, help!!

This may have helped iTunes (it can see the iPhoto library - not sure if it could before, hadn't tested it). iMovie still doesn't see the library though. Instead, it sees a library on the internal disk with nothing in it -- there's actually no library there. iMovie shows the external disk, but does not show an iPhoto library on it.

Changes in slide show on DVD

1.I made a slide show with Photoshop Elements 4 and burn it to a DVD-RW with Premiere Elements. After several try it works.All 750 photos with transitions are there and I saw it on T.V.
2 Back in PE4, I made some changes in the slideshow and save it.I understand these changes are not automatically transfer in Premiere.
3.Question:how can I also modify the version in Premiere?Do I have to start all over again and burn a new DVD or is there another way to do it.?
4.Question: looking the DVD in Premiere I noticed many photos are missing in the assembly at the bottom of the screen but I can view all in the center of the screen.Why?

I think that the simplest approach will be to burn a new DVD using the same process from PSE 4. You say you used a DVD-RW so I think you can burn again on the same disc; I have done it with a DVD+RW.
In theory you could modify the Premiere Elements timeline to reproduce the same changes that you made in the PSE 4 slideshow - but you would still need to burn to DVD again. If do you start again from PSE 4 then I think you will need to redo any DVD menus you made in PE2.

When you look at your show in Premiere, it has already been made in to a video so they are no longer individual slides. I suspect that the fact that you are not seeing all of the photos is because of the scale that is being used by default to display the timeline of the video in Premiere Elements. If you zoom in on that timeline, I think you should be able to see individual photos. I think that there is a scale setting that you can change for the timeline - but I don't immediately recall what it is.
For more detailed answers to these questions you might try the Premiere Elements forum because there are multiple participants on that forum who know PSE 4 and PE2.

Change the "playback bar" to show slide numbering?

I am using Adobe Captivate 5 and outputting the CBTs as flash files. Is there a way to change the “playback bar” to show slide numbering. For example “Slide 1 of 15?”
I played around with “variables” but this allows you to put a slide number on the slide itself and not on the playback bar. Do you have any recommendations?

You'll need a programmer to change the playbar (Flash) in that case.
An alternative could be to put the playbar in overlay, don't stretch it over the total width of the slide, and add the solution with system variables at the same height as the playbar.
TOC provides also slide numbers, and could act as an alternative for navigation.

It sounds like you have done some great troubleshooting for your iPod nano that is not responding. In this situation, if resetting it did not resolve, I would suggest restoring the iPod back to its factory settings and then sync your content back onto it from iTunes. All apps are tied to the Apple ID that downloaded them.
They can not be transferred to a new Apple ID.
You will have to use the Apple ID and password used to download them.
If you do not wish to do so, erase them and download them under the new ID. This will wipe any data in the app and you will have to pay for them again.

I went into the original files in the iphoto library and organised the photos there, now when I try to look at the photos in iphoto the tiles are there but when I try to enlarge or put into a slide show a big grey explanation mark occurs?

I tried to organise my iphoto originals to it would be easier to back them up onto my hard drive, so I renamed them and grouped them in the orinigal file. Now when I go onto iphoto to view the photos in a slide show a big exclamation mark comes up and if I click on the photo to see the original file it can't find it. Any ideas?

You won't be able to run the rebuild function and restore your library becaue you renamed and regrouped your original photos from the Finder. I doubt if you can change the names back to their original names and put them back in the folders they were in originally so your only option is get your backup library and replace the one you damaged.
If you don't have a backup copy of the library from just before the problem that contains all of your photos you will need to start over from scratch as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
In the future stay out of the iPhoto Library package and only access the photos using iPhoto.

Iphoto crashing and ERROR message when trying to EXPORT to slide show

I am producing a simple Slide Show to be shown tomorrow at 8am.
I created it in IPHOTO but an older version. I did some tests last night and today. Worked fine.
Now that it is done I tried to EXPORT it to Quicktime, as a H.264 Quicktime movie.
Dimension 1280x 720
Stills only and no music. Classic with simple dissolves from one photo to next.
Export and proceed and I leave it alone. After about 1/2 hour or so it crashes and give ERROR message and say
"unable to process" or complete.
I have tried several times and changed specs. Still crashes.
What happened to Apple's Chat Support? Are then not online after a certain time?
On an IMAC with 16 Gbs of RAM, and have space left on drive. this is not complex.
anyone? It is due tonight so I can Hightail send it to AV people and it needs to be downloaded
tonight or EARLY tomorrow for showing at 8am.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

I fixed my problem so download iTunes on your computer/laptop. Connect your iPhone into the computer and then click load backup and after they finish loading the backup. Go to your settings and click reset all contents and settings and then your phone will turn off by itself and wait for your phone to turn on and then it will say hello and slide to set up but don't do anything. Go to your computer and click restore backup and then it will turn off again and then just wait for it turn back on and then when it turns back on. You won't lose anything. Just your apps because once you redownload them. They will already put it in the spot you used to put them and like games it will still save wherever level or part you are on of the game. Hope this solves your problem.

Apple TV (1st gen) does not show up in iTunes 11

I have a 1st generation Apple TV. It seemed to be working fine, except that my shared music did not appear under My Music. I thought maybe there was a connectivity issue with iTunes, so I decided to disconnect from iTunes and then re-link to iTunes. The problem is, the AppleTV does not show up under devices in iTunes. If I go to Preferences-AppleTV, it does show up with a status of "syncing", however, the Apple TV does not show it is connected to iTunes. I tried removing it in Preferences-AppleTV on the iMac, but it reappears after a few minutes, again with a status of "syncing". I have verified both the iMac and Apple TV are connected to the correct network, both have the correct AppleID and password. iMac is running Snow Leopard, iTunes 11.02 (absolutely HATE version 11), Apple TV 3.02.
Two questions:
1. How do I get iTunes to see my Apple TV so I can enter the 5 digit code and connect?
2. Once that is done, how do I get it to show my shared music library (Movies and TV shows were there previously, just not Music)?

Apple TV also does not show up in the devices tab under the Preferences window.
I have tried multiple suggestions on the support forum but none have worked.
Apple TV is able to access the network, is on the same network as the iMac with iTunes library connected. Both are connected to network via ethernet cable (not wifi). Both are able to access the internet (apple tv plays movie prieviews and gets updates). Using the Terminal app, I am able to ping the apple TV's IP number from the iMac and get a successful return.
Both have latest software downloads.
I have tried cold-booting the apple TV, resetting the router, and verified in the router device list that both imac and appleTV are listed as active, un-blocked connections.
I don't intend to buy an Apple TV 2nd gen or later (since I bought this one and it's not working now due to software update, what guarantee that a later model won't generate the same problem later.
One last wrinkle, I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old who are jonesing hard for their "dance party" fix.
Have you ever wronged a two year old?

About a month ago a song randomly appeared in my songs list and when I tried swiping to the left to delete the song it wouldn't slide over to show the delete button. The delete slide appears with all of my other songs except that one. P.S. iCloud is off.

The ICloud songs are turned off and it wasn't iTunes Radio. 2 more songs like this have appeared and I can't delete them from both my iPhone or my computer (they don't even show up on my computer). If somebody knows how to fix this that would be amazing! Thank You.
