Don't have receipt, but iPad isn't 1 year old - Can anything be done?

My iPad has developed a fault in its sleep/reset button. Eg - it acts like the button is being pressed, when it isn't. I'd like to bring it in for a fix, but they tell me the iPad is no longer covered. It was a birthday present in January (2011), and I don't have any sort of receipt.
Is there anything that can be done? Could a print out of the credit card transaction be used in lieu of a actual receipt? Or anything else?
I'd really like to get this fixed, but I was given the 2nd hand impression that it coud end up being very pricey.

(Note: I have tried a hard reset & it didn't do anything but delete my files)

It may show up as 'equipment' but I bet they still had to enter the serial number of hte iPad. Try verizon's site, 'my verizon' and see if it shows what piece of equipment you have, when the contract started, etc.
I'd think they'd have to register the serial number or something, Iwould think it'd all be part of activating the device.

This problem seems to be an ongoing situation. I assume these foreign travelers think they can save money by buying an IP here in the states for full price and then taking it back to their native land for use there.
There is a bailout procedure with eBay where they can probably recover most if not all they paid for the no-contact phone. And then there's always the chancy unlocking procedure.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

Make sure you set the speakers as discoverable, which usually involves holding down a button for a few seconds. Go to System Preferences / Bluetooth and you should be able to add it.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here;
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go
Then right or control click the Flash Player.plugin then click Get Info
The version number is noted there.
Assuming you are using Safari ...
Check Safari > Preferences > Security
Make sure: Enable plug-ins is enabled.
Sometimes uninstalling the currently installed Flash plugin then reinstaliing new can help > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
If you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video / audio from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
