Don't know termanology, need advice
I have a G5, ipod, Canon i9900 printer and a dell dimension 8200.
I have a wireless card for the G5 and I have a small device that plugs into a usb on the dell to make it wireless.
Will the Airport (??), serve as a good "router" for all this stuff?
Also will I need to buy something extra to make the printer wireless?
Do I need to replace the usb card (thing) I have for my dell in order for the dell to work with the airport thing?
Sorry I have never dealt with the "wireless" stuff
Hi Chris,
Sounds like you're all set.
Airport BaseStation will work fine as your router. And Print Server.
The USB thingie for Dell may be the most troublesome link (or it may work perfectly), but if it's rated 54"G", it's fine. Sometimes a PCI card plugged into the PC will be more dependable, but save your cash and try the USB thing first.
You'll probably hook the printer into theUSB port on Airport, and configure to print using 'Bonjour' (old name is Rendezvous. Search around here, download what you need for the Dell).
You say you haven't dealt with wireless stuff?...have you dealt with networking before?

My iPhone4,updated to iOS5.1 days ago. Now,I want to delete unuseful Apps on iPhone's desktop.Unluckly,App needs more time to show "X" when it shakes.I don't know why.Needs technology support. Thanks!
Have you tried a reset to see if that improves the speed ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.

This is the message I keep getting. Help me please.

=========== =======
TOTAL 1.4G
TOTAL, minus reserved VM space 373.3MYou installed the "Genieo" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
Step 1
In the Applications folder, there should be an item named "Genieo". Select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that the Version is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
Step 2
Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you couldn't complete Step 1, stop here and ask for instructions.

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist

/usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. It must be said that this failure of oversight is inexcusable and has seriously compromised the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You cannot rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam. -
Ok...so I am REALLY new to this whole Mac thing and my girlfriend knows less than I do about computers and phones, etc. but I have been using her Mac computer and thought how cool it was until I synced my iphone to it and all of her ex's apps went on my phone so then I tried to find out how to get her ex's name and info off the computer and realized that just because the log in name is my girlfriends name...the computers name and all HIDDEN passwords and HIDDEN dates of when things have been changed.
Can this person have access to anything I have done on that computer?
How do I find the default keychain login?
How can I assure she cannot get any files or ANYTHING off this computer?
My girlfriend doesn't really want to lose her files like photos and iTunes but I am assuming since my girlfriend wasn't really ever the one "truly" logging in....
I don't know.
Need help for dummies here! They were together living in this house for 7 years. My girlfriend purchases the Mac. Her girlfriend sets up the Mac. They mutually break up and her girlfriend says "I put the computer in YOUR name" so don't worry... Go ahead and use it. When I say she left it behind on purpose what I mean is the computer is in the ex's name bc she PUT it in her name ...like all the cloud stuff. And sub accounts are in my gf's name...like ....user login. But my gfs not really the administrator of this computer and her ex has 3 macs of her own that I (THINK) are attached to this "system".
I am SO new at this that I JUST created an account on this website to try to get help. I own a business and have been using this computer not knowing that my girlfriend isn't the one who set her own computer up. I know nothing about a Mac. I don't know if someone who has another Mac on the system can transfer files? I have been logging onto the computer under my gf's user name and password just to access what in my mind is known as the regular Internet. My gmail...my business email login...passwords...bank account, ect.
I just want to ensure she can't access MY stuff. I don't care about HER stuff!
I'm not a hacker! ****....I didn't even know how to open up a new tab on the freaking thing until just a few months ago! Lol -
I've got OSX/Genieo.A virus on my mac and don't know how to get rid of it and w I have it
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You installed the "Genieo" malware. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the malware (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.

You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.

This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.

I need a specific script and don't know how to write it
I'm running InD CS 5.5 with OS X 10.6.8
I use the .indb for 13-18 documents to create a textbook for print. I use a standard 8.5 x 11 page. This textbook has a main body (32 pica width) with numbered questions in a 10 pica space outside of the margins (with a 1 pica gutter between) - each question in a text box that is anchored to the paragraph the question is about. I also have lots of graphic elements (photos, graphs) that i put in that outside space that encroaches into the main body and has a text wrap. I am wanting to use these same documents to create ebooks. I have studied the new tags and edited my style names to conform to html conventions and have included tags.
I need a script that will:
1) cut those questions from their boxes, delete the box, and move the questions into the main margin just above the paragraph they are anchored to. All of the questions have the same style (d-question).
2) replace the "frame break" at the end of the questions with a paragraph marker that uses the "d-question" style
I don't know if this is a diff script or can be done in the same one, but:
3) i also have a little candle grapic (candle.tif) in some places (denotes an illustration) that is outside the margin but has no text associated, but is also anchored to a paragraph it goes with. I would like for it to be inline at the beginning of the paragraph text.
4) AND move any pictures, graphs, etc. into the main body, just above where they are anchored but on their own paragraph marker styled "body_art".
Can anyone help? I would appreciate any advice you have. But it does not export fine to ePub. The Question number comes out on one
line and the text on another. And then the little graphic comes out on yet
another ... and they aren't next to each other. I think i'll have to go in
to the object export actions and make a jpg for each question. I thought
moving them into the text was easier plus i think it looks better. -
I don't know what i need. I'am a mac user but i need to run quick books premier. This is the only software i need in windows . Could i have some advise in what is better for me, Bootcamp or Parallels
The Intuit rep said they don't "support" QuickbooksPremier on a "virtual machine." Do you know what I risk by using it, anyway? thanks for the advice about Boot Camp vs Parallels, BTW!
I use QuickBooks Pro for Mac, so I haven't had need to try any of the Windows versions in a VM. But I can't think why it wouldn't work. From within the VM, QuickBooks Premier would believe it is operating on PC hardware within Windows.
I would guess they mean that the multiple user support wouldn't work from within the VM. But I would think that would also work. Windows can see the Internet from within the VM, which means it can see your network. So if Windows can see the network, then QB Premier should be able to, too.
I know you can get Parallels as a demo, and maybe you could get QB Premier as trial software. So if you already have a retail copy of Windows to load into a VM, it would only cost you time to test what's possible. -
if there are lots of tabs, then the button to close them individually will go invisible, so anyone who wants to close an inactive tab, he needs to select that tab to close it. i know there is a limit of space to include the close button if many tabs are open, my advice is, when one points to an invisible tab, the button to close that tab(only) would appear, so it is easy to close an inactive tab without switching to it. I don't know whether this is the right place for my opinion, if not please tell me where I can say this .
Is your middle click able to open links into a new tab at least? if not then you may have your middle click set to something else.
By default the middle-click should open links into a new tab and when hovering over to close them. -
Am using short keyboard. Don't know how to create plus sign which is not on the keyboard. There is no number pad. Advice would be much appreciated.

Is the plus sign really not available on your keyboard at the place indicated on this graphic (to the right of the L key)? You might need to use shift or alt/option or shift+alt/option.

I'm trying to find out how to export my apple contacts to the Salesforce software and they need to be in a csv format and I don't know if this is possible and how to do it if it is?
I think there are third-party programs which will do that, but you can also do it with Automator:
See the links in my post, here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22390873#22390873
The file or clipboard contents will be in Tab Separated vars, so you'll have to open with a spreadsheet program and save as Comma Separated Vars format. -
My ipad 3 is frozen on the plug into itunes page - it won't turn off or on - just stuck. I have tried to follow advice I have found on these pages but I don't know how to connect the ipad to my mac (the advice is to connect ipad to mac and there is no usb port on an ipad). If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Going nuts.
I think you should probably also read the iPad User Guide. You didn't say what version of iOS your iPad is running, so here's the links to both the iOS 6 and iOS 7 (PDF) versions:

I just created an iCloud email and I want to use that email for my iTunes account as well. I need help switching the old apple ID because I do not remember anything associated with that email and I don't know the security questions or the login for that old email.
You cannot do that. The AppleID you used to create the iCloud account is an active primary email address. The email address you created with the iCloud account is also an active primary email address (all Apple domain email address automatically become AppleIDs as well). You cannot replace the primary email address on one active AppleID with the primary email address on another, active AppleID.
You can use your iCloud email/AppleID with iTunes, but it will be a separate account, so all your previous purchases remain tied to the other AppleID you have.
I don't understand your statement that you could not remeber your old AppleID password, as you would have had to use it to create the iCloud account in the first place (the first step of creating the iCloud account required you to login with your existing AppleID and password)? -
I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later. But I have version 8.1.2. I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.
Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
