DON'T like Indesign CS3 Palettes! Bring back CS2's

I'd like to know if any other designers out there despise CS3's new palette style as much as I do?
I loved in CS2 that you could group them and pull them in and out from the side of the window from the left and right sides. I had a whole system set up in CS@ for fast efficient work flow and now, I've been completely slowed down by the new set up. I've been working with it for 3 weeks now and still haven't adapted.
My main dislikes:
1. Having them all strung together means that when you click one out you can't see two full palettes at the same time. I need to see the swatches and color palettes all the time together.
2. I used to doc my long pallets together on the left side of the screen under my tools, the links, glyphs, and pages. I could have them open and also palettes multiple ones on the right side of the screen as well.
If anyone knows of a plug-in that could simulate the palette set up of CS2 please let me know.

>Showing a screen shot of the palettes minimized to icons is a tad disingenuous isn't it?
Is it? In what way?
>What did you do take my cue?
No, I wondered what was awkward about that arrangement. I still don't know. You don't seem to be able to tell me.
> your suggestions ignored the reasons behind the expressed preferences
After re-reading: yes, it ignored Michelle's but not Eric's.
>What Eric or any other user feels comfortable with is entirely up to them and can't be dictated by what is "possible."
Yes, I sometimes don't feel comfortable with the sun rising in the east, especially when I sleep in a room that faces that way.
Isn't that what trying to satisfy the needs of millions of people is all about? That you can't please everyone?
A sentence like "The ability to attach more items below it (the tool panel) is all that is needed." is like "I only want to plug my FireWire cable into the USB port"...
There are good technical reasons why you can't dock other panels to the tool panel. So there is need for compromise. You do understand about compromises, do you?
>than any kind of rebuttal
Only as in "In that respect nothing has changed, so why do you mention it?" (Thinks: Possibly because Eric asked for it.)
It sums up to:
- you
b can
use the left edge if you want to
- you
b can't
dock other panels to the tools panel but then: you never could
- you can easily stack twenty iconized panels in one minimized column, while in CS2 you couldn't read the labels any more when you stacked more than ten
- you can maximize more than one palette in CS2 while CS3 allows only one icon to be maximized at a time
The last is the only real disadvantage I can see.

  • InDesign cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents

ID cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents, not when open dialog appears, but after I choose file and it "starts" opening it. (core duo, xp, clean install, all updates)
If i open ID by opening file, it crashes with standard windows dialog, if I open ID first, it does not crash, but rather behaves strangely, nothing is opening, if I move a mouse it turns to sand clock.
Same thing happens on all machines with ID cs3 in my office.
All other apps works fine. I did read every single forum about ID crashing and nothing helps. Files resaved in interchange format opens well. There must be something in the files that ID cs2 did and what id cs3 cannot open :( Any ideas?

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

  • Strange InDesign CS3 palette behavior

I can't use the number/text fields in palettes to make changes. For example to change a font to a specific size I would normally highlight the text, highlight the size in the Character palette, and type in the desired size. What is happening now is the type size in the palette doesn't stay highlighted — the focus shifts from the palette to the selected text on the page. This happening with every palette field.
I have tried different documents, both new and existing. I have deleted the preferences manually and by launching InDesign while holding down shift + control + option + command. This morning I reinstalled the entire Creative Suite and the problem still persists.
InDesign has also started stealing focus from other applications — if I switch from InDesign to another application, like Photoshop, InDesign will pop back in front almost immediately.
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this?

I think there was a version of the Suitcase Autoactivate plugin that interferred with typing in fields.
    Are you running Suitcase?
EDIT: Disable the Suitcase plugin. See if they have a newer one on the website.

  • Help: PDFs don't match InDesign CS3 layout?

When I export my CS3 InDesign document to Acrobat as a PDF, there is one place where it changes the layout.
I have reverse type (white) captions, with a .1 stroke on the type, superimposed over dark/black photographs. After export, the white type now appears bold and plugs up the letters a bit, messy--totally unlike the type design I see in InDesign before the export.
Does anyone know why or a solution? I don't want the printer to use the PDFs with bold-appearing captions.
But, not knowing trapping and knock-out functions too well (novice), I'm also afraid the black ink when printing will bleed into the small white type. (Sometimes 9, sometimes 6, point--bad design decision, I guess...)
    Thanks for your help,
    Josef

You can use the Stroke Panel to align the stroke to center, inside or outside.
You say you used a stroke of .1, but .1 what, points, mm, inches?
Have you used any transparencies on your page, or anything at all from the Effects Panel? Even if it's on the pasteboard.
You should delete irrelevant information from the pasteboard.
Also make sure the text with the captions is on a layer ABOVE all the others, where possible. Especially on a layer above any items using Effects.
    See if that helps

  • I HAVE FF 3.6.21 DOES FF4 INSTALL OVER IT AND IMPORT ALL SETTINGS, BOOKMARKS, ETC AND CAN I GO BACK TO 3.6.21 IF I DON'T LIKE 4

I HAVE FF 3.6.21 Is FF4 a completely new install or does it install over the existing installation. Does it import settings, bookmarks, stored passwords, etc or do I have to add all that. Lastly, if I don't like FF4 can I go back to FF3 easily

Firefox 4 is no longer available. If upgrading, the only version that you can/should go to is Firefox 6.0.1, the current version. Firefox 7.0 is scheduled to be released on 09-27-2011 ('''''scheduled date is subject to change'''''). After Firefox 4.0, each upgrade replaces the prior version and the prior version is "abandoned" as far as security and stability updates are concerned.
Installing Firefox 6 will preserve your prior bookmarks, passwords, etc. You can/should make a backup of your personal information for safekeeping; what if you have a hard drive failure?
*See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information] '''''and''''' [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup Profile backup]
To test the new version 6.0.1 and leave your current Firefox 3.6.21 intact, you can install Firefox Portable. Firefox Portable is not produced by Mozilla (but is based on Firefox released versions) and is not supported on this site -- has its own support forum (see below). Firefox Portable installs in a separate folder on your hard drive and keeps its profile (personal information) separate so that it does not interfere with your current Firefox installation settings or personal information (bookmarks, passwords, etc.). You can also install Firefox Portable on a USB/thumb/pin/jump drive.

  • Win: ExtendScript Tool Kit 2: Can't connect to Indesign CS3 Debug

    Hi
I have a script for Indesign CS3 and like to debug this in ExtendScript ToolKit 2. But I can't connect to Indesign CS3 Debug.
    - I start Indesign and try to debug the script -> A message is show to start Indesign CS3. If I say yes, a message is shown that Indesign CS3 is loaded... But this message remains on the screen
    - The same if I don't start Indesign CS3 manually.
    - If I try it with Illustrator or Photoshop (both release versions) it works!
    What could be wrong?
    Thanks
    Hans

    Hello,
I have exact the same problem with soundbooth. And also that extended script is working fine with photoshop. I have tested it on 4 different computers. Updated windows to sp3, and updated all adobe software.
So it's definitely not a mess in the system (beside the mess of software 1,2 Gb you have to install for only soundbooth!!, Cool edit pro, which adobe took over from which soundbooth is a spin off, was only 20Mb....)
The technical help form adobe won't look at this if you don't buy the software first. But after some pressure they looked at the problem but couldn't find anything about it in there system.
Please advise how to solve this

  • Indesign CS3 text frame parameters and export PDF

could use some help with the following:
I need to edit and export a large number (7000) Indesign documents (one page)
    1. check for locked text frames and unlock
    2. group all text frames
    3. set grouped text frames at x=8 millimeters, y 10 milimeters
    4. export the documents to PDF in a subfolder called "Out"
    5. save and close the documents in the same subfolder as an Indesign CS3 document (orig is CS2)
This is what I've been trying soo far:
Now only checking one text frame - should be all text frames
"close document 1 saving yes" doesn't work because the originals are from CS2
I get a PDF called "Adobe Indesign SC3"
set processFolder to choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder that contains Innd Docs to process"
    tell application "Finder"
if not (exists folder "OUT" of processFolder) then
    make new folder at processFolder with properties {name:"OUT"}
    end if
set the destination_folder to folder "OUT" of processFolder as alias
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    try
set listFiles to (files of contents of processFolder) as alias list
    on error
set listFiles to (files of contents of processFolder) as alias as list
    end try
    repeat with thisFile in listFiles
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    with timeout of 120 seconds
    activate
    set properties of view preferences to {horizontal measurement units:millimeters, vertical measurement units:millimeters, ruler origin:page origin}
    open thisFile
    set myDoc to document 1
    set docName to name
    tell myDoc
set transform reference point of layout window 1 to top left anchor
set myBox to text frame 1 of page 1
    set properties of myBox to {locked:false}
    move myBox to {8, 10}
    end tell
export document 1 format PDF type to (destination_folder as string) & docName & ".pdf" using PDF export preset "[Drukwerkkwaliteit]" without showing options
    close document 1 saving yes
tell application "Finder" to move thisFile to destination_folder with replacing
    end timeout
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
    end
    end
Any help is greatly appreciated - Doing this manually is a lot of work!!!!!
    Peter

You're asking for the name of the application, not the document -- you need<br />to do it after your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />You could also get the name from the alias you open, rather than the open<br />document, something like:<br /><br />repeat with thisFile in listFiles<br />set oldDelims to AppleScript's text item delimiters<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {":"}<br />set docName to text item -1 of (thisFile as Unicode text)<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldDelims<br /><br />You should also move your "set properties of view preferences" line to after<br />your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />-- <br />Shane Stanley <[email protected]>

  • Petition to bring back "Print PDF" to InDesign

Would anyone else like to join a petition for bringing back "Print PDF" as an option in the InDesign Print menu?
I am on CS4 and my colleagues are on CS5 and they have no end of problems getting their PDFs the way they want them from the command near the Export options under FILE.
We work at a printers and in the end my colleagues come to me with CS4 to get the print ready files through to our RIP for making plates for litho printing.
The vital parts that are missing for CS5 is the option to choose the sheet size of the PDF and much more precise management of the colours and DPI/LPI.
We can't afford the latest kit for everything or to upgrade everything just because InDesign CS5 has lost a bit of functionality. I don't know what I'll do when it comes to my turn to upgrade and I know that there will be consequences for how we get our InDesign files through for printing. One big headache.
Why oh why oh why did Adobe decide to take this extra functionality away?

    On behalf of Adobe:
I assume you are referring to InDesign running on under MacOS.
    (1)     Adobe never “took away” any ability to produce PDF via distillation of PostScript. In what was described by Apple as a security enhancement, Apple themselves disabled the ability of Adobe Acrobat to have an automated “print to Distiller” capability via the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance on the Macintosh (this feature remains available under Windows). If you are going to complain to anyone, complain to Apple. This has nothing to do with a particular version of either InDesign or the Creative Suite, but rather, MacOS version.
    (2)     You still can conceivably produce PDF via distillation of PostScript by producing a PostScript file and then either manually distilling it or using the “watched folder” capability to automate the process of distilling PostScript into PDF.
A “petition” isn't going to change anything in this regards.
However, even though production of PDF via distillation of PostScript is still available, albeit not quite as convenient, we would wonder why you believe that you need to produce PDF in that manner?
PostScript generated by InDesign is not optimized for creation of PDF, but rather for printing directly to a PostScript device. It is highly device dependent with no support of color management and live transparency. It is created for a specific page size, a specific device resolution, and a specific color space. The fonts are embedded in the PostScript file in a manner that is not conducive for high reliability PDF creation.
Adobe most strongly recommends that all PDF creation from InDesign be performed by the Export function in which PDF is directly generated from the InDesign document without any PostScript intermediary. This provides the ability to produce highly optimized, device independent PDF with full color management, live transparency, searchability, etc.
You state that the vital parts that are missing for CS5 is the option to choose the sheet size of the PDF and much more precise management of the colours and DPI/LPI. Sorry, but that doesn't make sense at all.
Regardless of the “page size” chosen for your InDesign document, you can effectively choose a different (larger, but not smaller, obviously) page size for the exported PDF by judicious use of the bleed and slug areas either as defined originally for the document or as overrides at PDF export.
In terms of color management, PDF export fully supports ICC color management and by selecting appropriate export joboptions (such as PDF/X-4), you can fully manage all colors (RGB, CMYK, LAB, and spot colors) through the rest of your workflow.
I am not quite sure what you mean by precise management of DPI/LPI, but neither for composite PostScript (which is what you would distill to get a composite color PDF file) nor for PDF export does InDesign support direct specification of screening parameters (what I assume you mean for DPI/LPI). If you print separations directly from InDesign to a PostScript device, yes, the InDesign Output Print dialog allows you to specify generic (not on an image by image basis) frequency and angle for each of the separations which results as setpagedevice parameters in the PostScript file (and subsequently ignored by the Distiller). And if in fact you are creating pre-separated PDF, you are really using a non-supported, strongly not-recommended workflow.
Assuming that you are using a composite color PDF workflow, separation colorant line frequency and angles is normally handled automatically by any modern-day RIP. If you are sending your PDF files directly to a RIP, this separation colorant line frequency and angle information is normally either set via JDF commands or via the RIP's operator console and/or job submission system and is not somehow extracted from the PDF file itself. Many RIPs totally ignore such information, especially if they use FM or proprietary screening techniques.

  • Indesign cs3 will not launch.. (I don't use Trusteer Rapport)

I am running Vista ultimate 64bit. For nearly 2 weeks I have not been able to get Indesign, dreamweaver, illistrator, etc. to open.
When I click InDesign and I get the glowing circle for about a second, then it just stops. I do not use Trusteer Rapport and I have tried to re-install but ID and Dreamweaver, etc. still won't launch. Please help me before I lose it!
I called Adobe yesterday, after being on hold for 35 minutes and another 20 minutes of getting registered some foreign guy told me since I was using cs3 I had to purchase a contract for $40 just so they could help me. since they only offer support for cs4 or some ****.

    Anything in the event log?
Try running this command from Run: “regsvr32 jscript.dll” with the space, but without the quotes. Sometimes javascript isn't properly registered at manufacture. It won't hurt anything to do this again.
I don't like to tell people to reinstall, but it might be the thing to do in this case. Did you let the installer use the default directory? That's very important on Vista 64.
If you decide to reinstall, uninstall, then run the clean script (Using the new CS3Clean Script) and reboot without any antivirus or spayware scanners, no IM, no browser toolbars, and nothing else you don't absolutley need before running the installer again. The CS3 installer was prone to errors.
