Don't see airplay icon on ipad

When I swipe my multitask tray on iPad 3, I see the audio controls but no Airplay icon. I've never used Airplay but want to use it to mirror my screen to my computer. Why isn't the icon appearing?
The iPad is connecting wirelessly to a network being generated by an iMac nearby with internet sharing. I'm trying to mirror to a second iMac, which is on the wireless network too, running Reflection.

Actually, the computer receives Airplay fine from the iPad -- that's what the Reflection app does. Turns out I just didn't have Wifi turned on on the receiving iMac, since it was already connected to ethernet.
Once I connected the iMac to the wireless network, it worked great. It's awesome!

Where don't you see the Photo Stream? On your iPhone/iPad or in iPhoto on your Mac?
In iPhoto on your Mac check, if Photo Stream is still enabled on System Preferences > iCloud and in the iPhoto Preferences "iCloud" tab.

If you do not have am AirPlay device on your home WiFi network, you do not get the icon in the control center. The icon only appears when it is needed.
No AirPlay devices - no AirPlay icon.

If sounds like you updated to iOS 8.1.3 and now do not see the AirPlay icon in the Control Center. I would run through the troubleshooting and setup verification. It should get that rectified for you:
Resolve issues with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Cannot see Airplay icon on any of my devices

Hi Community,
I bought a brand new Apple TV and it connected to the wireless network at home. I can use photo stream with all my devices, I can access all internet services directly using the Apple TV (e.g. Youtube, Movies, Netflix, etc...) but I cannot see Airplay on any of my devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones).
I have disabled the firewall settings on my router. The Apple TV has a DHCP ip address and has strong wireless signal. I have updated my AppleTV software today to the latest version. Still none of my devices can see Airplay icon.
I couldn't find any discussion that could help me in sorting my problem out.

Thanks for the link. It didn't work at first on any of the devices but then I decided to enter a manual DNS instead of an automatic configuration. Then followed the steps again from your link and it worked.
It is not stable though as I need to reset the device for it to see the airplay. But when it is connected it stays connected for 30 minutes approx.
Any other suggestions to keep it stable would be fantastic but at least in the meantime I have a workaround.

I have recentely purchased an apple tv and connected to the home Wi-Fi with my iPhone 4. Apple TV seems to be setup ok but I cannot mirror anything as I cannot see Airplay icon in my iPhone 4? No. Photo stream only streams photos, not videos. To transfer videos between your devices you can either import them to iTunes and sync them, or (more conveniently) use an app like PhotoSync or Bump.

I just had the same problem. Took the first unit back and the problem is still occuring on the second one. I solved it by setting up again with the USB, but it keeps dropping out every few days.

When you installed Firefox, did you uncheck the option to create a short cut?
In order to pin to the toolbar, when you have Firefox open, right click on the icon in the bar and select "Pin to task bar".
