Don't try to do screen capture in Time Machine window...

Was going to show off Time Machine to my brother by taking screen capture.
Brought up Time Machine, pressed standard "Command-Shift-Number 4" key combo. Ouch... Time Machine screen became 'frozen in time'. Many key presses and 'strong words' later it woke up and came back.

Correct. I was in habit of using Command-Shift-4 + mouse drag for a region, or same key combo and then spacebar on a window for just a window for doing screen captures.
Command-Shift-3 worked fine with no lockup for whole window. People will still need to be careful not to attempt Command-Shift-4 and then spacebar or select area with the mouse as it appears to lock up the Mac and no key combos work.

    Here's the scoop, new friend.....
When you boot into Time Machine you'll get the same OS X Utilities screen as you would if you booted into the Recovery HD. So, from there go into Disk Utilities to erase/format your internal drive. After that's done, back out to the OS X Utilities screen and select the restore option. Just follow the prompts to select the TM back up date you want to restore from and where to restore it to. Pretty straight forward.

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering  "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount"  and "diskutil info disk2."  Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help?  Thank you. blelambert

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.

  • Screen sharing and time machine

I have a mini without a monitor. I also have a 17" G4 PowerBook. Both are running Leopard. I use screen sharing to control the mini from the PowerBook.
When I open Time Machine on the mini the screen sharing goes all white... Is this because all the nifty graphics in the Time Machine app are too much for screen sharing to handle?

What screen resolution has your headless machine defaulted to ? Since you can get in via screen sharing, see what it's defaulted to.
Consider that TM probably has a required resolution (like, Workgroup Manager requires 1024x768 minimum).
If you need to have the resolution default to a different setting on reboot, try this that I put together:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20070211165654615
It's not my work just easy-to-use packaging of existing software (read the article).
    It's Universal and there's a link there for a double-clickable installer.
For those bemoaning their experience jumping ahead with 10.5 server in a production environment:
well, that's your doing. Did you do full pre-testing in a non-production setting and confirm for yourself that it's ready for your needs ?
If you think 10.4.0 was perfect you are living in a fantasy. 10.4 server was a very rocky road til around 10.4.3 and there were still many fixes needed that came with later revisions.
10.3 had plenty of problems (!!) and 10.2 was a beast til 10.2.8 and I don't miss it.

  • Why don't some of my apps open after Time Machine restore?

As I was diligently running Disk Utility for my monthly maintenance routine, it reported some disk errors which could not be repaired. I tried Repair Permissions and Repair Disk again but got the same result. I had no choice but to boot up off my Snow Leopard Installer CD, wipe the drive clean and then restore my files from my Time Machine backups. Almost 3 full days later, the restore completed (155GB of data). All my files are back. Hooray and thank you Apple! But.. some of my apps won't start. They bounce in the dock, but do not actually open. They just stop bouncing without any visible errors.
I haven't checked every single app but so far App Store, Mail, Dictionary, iTunes, Address Book and iCal won't open. However, Firefox, TextEdit, Calculator, Word, Excel, VirtualBox, and Disk Utility seem OK. Any ideas? I thought it might be a permssions thing so I repaired permissions 3 times using Disk Utility (each time permissions appear to be repaired) but that didn't help. I have a callback to Apple scheduled for tomorrow, but any advance info would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you.

You have a problem with your drive and/or OS X and it's TimeMachine copy, are corrupted.
I had no choice but to boot up off my Snow Leopard Installer CD, wipe the drive clean
Do it again like this, hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, this time use Erase>Security Option> Zero All Data. Install 10.6. fresh, no TM restore.
But before you do this, copy your user file folders (music, docs, pics, etc) to a regular storage drive (not TimeMachine!) and disconnect all drives.
Almost 3 full days later, the restore completed
It doens't take 3 days to restore that's insane, I clone a entire drive with twice that amount in only a hour,  you obviously have a more serious issue.
I have a callback to Apple scheduled for tomorrow, but any advance info would be greatly appreciated!
If your boot drive is failing, if under warranty/AppleCare then let Apple replace it.
If not, then try the Zero Erase and reinstall OS X fresh and update to 10.6.8 and wait it out, see if it works to see if it's really the drive or not, then create a new user like your old one, then install all your programs from fresh sources and files drag and dropped manually from the storage drive.
If you use TimeMachine to restore from, the same corruption there will return, if it was caused by hardware (your boot drive) or in software is undetermined, best do a fresh 10.6 install in this case and wait it out to see if it's a hardware issue.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
If your drive is failing, it will fail with the fresh install, but at least you have your data off safely on a storage drive and not trapped by TimeMachine as that's likely corrupted as well from either the boot drive, or by some other reason.
Also don't let Apple install 10.7 Lion if they try, most of your software won't work with it. Stick with 10.6.8., leave 10.7 for a new machine.

  • On my Mac, in Documents folders A-G have gone missing.  When I try to access the backup in time machine, it won't let me go back at all.  This is a major problem and I have no idea what happened or how to fix it!

All folders up to "H" have gone missing and for some reason when I go into Time Machine, I'm not able to access any of the backups.  It won't let me select any of the screens behind the current one and when I click on the right hand side on any of the dates listed, nothing happens.  I really need to get this fixed.  Any help????

I don't know what will help at this point. You should never update a system that has problems, unless you're absolutely sure that the problems are caused by a bug that is fixed in the update. With your backups in an uncertain state, you should not update or do anything else except start a new backup.

  • Don't see target disk when recovering from Time Machine

on my MacBook (vintage 2006?) I am now running 10.7.5
A few days ago it all of a sudden would not boot correctly. It goes through the start up screens and gets all the way to the screen where you can select a user (I have 4 users [family members] installed on this machine). You can select a user and enter a password and then the screen goes nearly white and then dumps you back to the user selection screen. If you put in the wrong password it errors as it should. If you ask for a password hint it operates as it should. It just won't log in ANY user.
I started it in the mode where you can run disk doctor and everything checks out as OK.
I run Time Machine so I thought "go get a 1 week old back-up, restore it and try that"
So I start up holdinging Control-R and I get to the screens that let you restore etc.
    I find the drive, I find a back-up I want.
    BUT
when it gets to the "Select a Destination" screen the only drive showing is the external drive I have attached which has the Time Machine back ups on it.
    HELP!!!

wait - after sitting there for a long while on the 3 attempt all of a sudden the internal drive became visible.
I have selected it and am now restoring (which I will let run over night)
If this fixes it I will let everyone know.
IF it does not I will ask if anyone has a good idea as to how to fix this boo/log-in problem

  • Log-ins don't work after an OS X Leopard Time Machine restore

I upgraded the RAM and HDD on a Santa Rosa MacBook and then did a Time Machine restore from my old iMac G5 Time Machine backup.  Everything seemed to go well but afterwards my login and admin passwords were no longer accepted.  Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Restore imac screen brightness from Time Machine?

    Hi
I am a professional photographer and I am constantly struggling with calibrating my image color and brightness. Just recently I got my proofs back from the printer and they were all too dark, no highlights and drab. This tells me that my screen is too bright and I am therefore adjusting my editing down too much which is resulting in darker/less bright photos...
Just for testing I went into a few photos and blindly edited up the brightness on them, even though they looked too bright on my screen. I got them back and they were much better. Problem is, dummy me, a day later tried to calibrate my monitor and moved the screen brightness. This makes the test prints I did not reliable now because the screen brightness is no longer constant.
Question- is there any way using time machine that I can go back to the day before I calibrated my screen to restore the original screen brightness? I don't want to change or restore anything else.
    Thanks in advance,
    Shannon

I have found all my stored emails in a Time Machine folder. Is there any way to go back to a previous version of Mail where it was all organized and intact? What I'm seeking specifically is for the numerous email accounts I had set up show up again under my Inbox.
Do the mailboxes appear in Mail, but are empty or incomplete? If so, I'd be inclined to start by selecting each mailbox in turn, then from the menubar, +Mailboxes > Rebuild.+ That may fix it without any further hassles.
If the mailboxes appear, but the rebuild doesn't recover all the messages, see #15 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If the mailboxes don't appear at all, quit Mail and use Time Machine to restore the preferences file, then the messages, as in #15.
    It's in <your home folder>/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If you were searching for it via a Finder search, you have to include +system files,+ as odd as that seems. But the easiest way to find it is to just navigate to it in your backups.

Purchase a couple of these when they go on sale.
Start burning all the photos onto DVDs.
At least you'll have all your photos if your computer, time machine or any other backup you use goes bonkers.

    Yes!
    Here's a response from Intego...
    "Hello,
You will want to add your Time Machine drive to VirusBarrier X5's Trusted Zone so that the items are not scanned as Time Machine reads and copies to that directory.
You can either do this in VirusBarrier X5's Preferences, under the "Scanner" section.
Or you can add it using the contextual menu by holding down the Control key and clicking on the Time Machine backup volume. A pop-up menu will appear, in the "More" submenu is a submenu for "VirusBarrier X5" with a choice of "Add to Trusted Zone". Choosing this will add the item to VirusBarrier's Trusted Zone and keep it from being scanned by the background scanner.
    Thank you for choosing Intego."
