Don't understand "offline or missing files"

I was using Lightroom and set a preference so that I could try to edit one of the photos in Photoshop elements.
Now, when I open the folder that had that photo in it, ALL of the photos say offline or missing, even though the photo appears. If I right click on one of the subfolders and click "find missing files" it seems to find them in Photoshop Elements.  When I choose Photoshop Elements, the folder just disappears! If I open Photoshop Elements, there is nothing there.  I just don't understand!!  I find Lightroom 3 very frustrating.

Once imported to LR, you must not move or rename any image-file except from within LR. What you see in the LR library is the cached preview. If you have moved or renamed a file directly with the explorer, then the file shows as missing. With "find missing files" you can re-link the file from its new position to the LR library.
What happens if you select "show in explorer"? Are the files there? With correct name?

  • Media Offline/Missing Files In FCExpressHD

Very confused. Edited footage and saved on External HD. Lacie 200GB...Been very careful to constantly save all work on External HD. Been on 6 week trip. Powered down Powerbook, unplugged everything including Ext HD and put away.... just returned. Got back into FCE HD and for no reason..I get the Media Offline and Missing Files message. What could I have possibly done to make this happen. I deleted NOTHING during my editing process and kept saving and saving..Now this!...What did I do wrong?
    HB

If it's new the external may not be formatted
correctly to work with a Mac.
    Is the format Mac OSExtended?

    Hello Al...
I resolved the problem...I physically went into my Lacie External HD..and found the FCE video file I was working on..double-clicked it, FCE opened and brought up all my files/images/video onto the timeline without a problem...
    Nothing missing, nothing offline...
I don't know why, when I open FCE HD (FIRST) and go to File>Open or >Open Recent..after not being on-line for several weeks (out of town on trip)..I get these "offline or missing files" error messages...but when I go directly to my External HD...find the file, click on it..and it opens..I'm bewildered...
    Anyway...I guess I shouldn't complain...everything looks OK...
    Thanks again.

  • Don't understand: "the file [eg] 'Stained Glass l jpg' is offline..."

    Hi there,
New to Lightroom 2; making some progress. I thought that I imported 800 images from either Elements 7 (that I have and want to use as Editor), or my hard drive--but I think there is something amiss. After I surveyed about a hundred images I came across a batch of about 60 pictures that I took of the new Opus Dei complex in NYC last November.
Well, after the 1st. image of the Opus Dei batch was labeled (right word?) "The file named 'Stained Glass L JPG' is offline or missing " I said, Shucks! and went to the next photo of the batch--then I realized that all of the images are inaccessible in Lightroom.
I must have botched the Import procedure, but I cannot figure out why lots of images are accessible--a lot of them are not.
    Thank you.
    Bill P

Bill- If you go to grid view in Library, you can see easily what photos are offline or missing. Missing in this context means LR cannot locate the file. This happens when a folder has been moved or renamed outside of LR, i.e., in the Finder or Explorer.
The first thing to try is to locate physically the image file, then direct LR to it. It most likely is on the disk where it started.

  • What does this message mean? : "The file name "DSC_0088.jpg" is offline or missing." ?

What does this message mean? : "The file name "DSC_0088.jpg" is offline or missing."   I am in the process of importing photos from iPhoto (don't really know what I'm doing....) and when I look at one of the imported photos that message pops up.  I know what "DSC_0088.jpg" is.  I don't know what it means that the file is "missing".

    CASpyr,
Thank you so much for your reply.  I have a couple of bigger issues that I am dealing with: too many photos on my laptop: 40,000! (Of course I have to throw away many of them, but that is time consuming). I have a MacBook Pro and have primarily used IPhoto. I have recently purchased 2 external drives and have transferred my photos to those, but I need a basic education about how photos are stored, copied, etc.  I have recently been told that iPhoto only shows and deals with jpegs, not RAW.  About 1/3 of my photos are RAW, so I purchased Lightroom, so I could do more with those RAW photos.  I have been told by my local Mac store that I need to delete most of my photos from iPhoto, because it's causing problems.  I am reluctant to do so until I am sure that all of the keywords, descriptions and editing I have done to these photos is not lost when deleted from iPhoto. I just watched a tutorial about importing to Lightroom and got out of it that I needed to copy photos from iPhoto to a file on my desktop and then copy to Lightroom.  I did that, it seemed to work.  Then (because of my storage/memory issues) I deleted the photos (just a few as an experiment) from that desktop file.  I'm guessing that is why Lightroom doesn't recognize the the photos.  It seems that (learned from another tutorial) that one uses "Add" , Lightroom is only connecting to the source of the photo, not  actually copying it to the program.  Sounds like I need to use the "Move" feature instead.  My ultimate goal is to store the photos on the 2 external drives and eliminate most of them from my lapop.  So my basic questions have to do with what data (metadata??) is copied from iPhoto to an external drive (RAW???) and what isn't copied. Basic understanding issues, obviously….  I hope this isn't too much to ask.  If you can recommend a book or resource that can explain those basic issues to me I'd appreciate it.  I just got back from a trip and I can't download my new photos until I manage the rest!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

Uloading ebook using iProducer rec'd error: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Unable to parse nav file: toc.ncx" at Book. I don't understand and need help fixing it. Please Help if you've the knowledge.
    Many Thanks

Yep, i just did it again. The entire scroll-bar widget, complete with formatted text, graphics, etc., pasted itself nicely in another book. Two different files, the same widget.
I use the scroll-bar widgets for most of my texts. (I have audio buttons on the side, and the scripts are within the widget, to the side). My only text is within widgets, and text boxes, naturally.
I am following your recommendation: cleaning files, etc. I am remaking the book anew. I need to convince the EPUB bot or whatever that my file looks and works nicely on all my devices. You would expect an error message when previewing the book: 'Hey Amigo, your file is flawed, stop working on it, and get back to the drawing board." Should be able to try again next Monday.

  • "File is Offline or Missing"???

    Hello Gang,
Total newbie question here.  Three days ago I loaded LR3 on my MacPro and imported some recent RAW files from Bridge CS3 and everything works perfect.  Today I decided to retrieve some old RAW stuff that was languishing on an old Win 98 PC.  I burned a CD-R via Roxio Drag and Drop of 600 of those older files.  Before I started I made sure the disks were formatted so that my Mac could read them.  I imported them into LR3 and everything looked solid.  The Histograms were functional in the Develop mode and all tools were working fine.  However, once I removed the disk to start working on the newly imported files I noticed that all of the pictures had a "?" attached to them along with a black dialog box across the top of the image stating "The file named CRW_0950.CRW is Offline or Missing."  I can see the file picture fine in the Library, but once I switch to the develope module the histogram disappears and the tools will not function.  If I load the disk again all the info returns.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?  I thought that once I imported the files I could start developing them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you probably imported the pics in the database and left them fysically on the CD. Have a good look at the import dialogue. You can copy the files during import to a new location (your harddisk). For now copy the files with you OS to the harddisk. Than let LR update the old folder location to the new folder location. (right click, or menu Library find missing photo's)

  • Don't understand what this means I/O Error: import file

I'm building a website in dreamweaver cs5 with a XML doctype. When I tried to validate my css I got an error code I don't understand. This is the error: I/O Error: import file:/Volumes/Macintosh%20HD/Users/schweideltyson/Desktop/CS%2080_final%20project/gallery .html: Operation not permitted. Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is that I imported some text for my index page from another website.

I keep getting this error message when I (right-click) on a photo file on my desktop to burn to a CD. I don't understand this code...does anyone?  Thanks  Ariel**:    The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x80020000).

I tried every obvious solution to this problem with different types of disc (-R; +R; -RW and +RW) and the problem persisted.  Then I read about removing a hyphen in picture filenames.  I renamed all the images and bingo there were no further problems.  Apple should have solved this by now.  This error code has been reported for several years and my MacBook Pro is quite new.  Anyway, I hope this helps.  It does work.

  • I get message:can't save library file not enough access privileges.Don't understand what this means?

I get message:"Can't save library file.  Not enough access privileges" .Don't understand what this means. No visible effect that I can see now.

Classic example of why you should save your workm in progress...just hit Ctrl+s to do it on the fly.
Yes I know. But it is the first time I work with Photoshop on such a big project and I thought it would be more stable.. Do the newer versions manage the memory better ?
You can shrink your image down which will make it smaller enough to save
Not enough memory to resize the image. And in the manipulation, it would corrupt some of my layers..
you can try to save as a diffeent format
I could succesfully save in Bitmap format. But I lose all my layers info..
The making loads of screen shots would be good if it wasnt really an
option seeing as it would use even more memory to do that then put the
image together out of the screen shots.
I made screen shots without any problem. I saved them through MS Paint without any memory problem, while Photoshop in parallel was just used as a static image for snapping...

  • Why was there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my file now.

Why is there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my files now. I read short comments & how to's in the support sections, but nothing I've read so far explains"best practices" or turning iCloud off to get a grip on managing files. I have 250gb fast storage on the MBP itself, and 200gb in the ICloud, one would thing that's enough. The files seem too be multiplying like rabbits. IPhoto's Faces has created hundereds of "somethings" not sure what. I am sure I am very frustrated! Please comment with kindness.

Yes,I am confused. To say its just another drive is a "buzz statement".
OK, for example. If I download a document, song, or photo from ICloud, as I understand, it goes to Download in Finder. If I want to move it to a local folder of my choice on the solid state drive in my new MBP, does a copy always stay in ICloud? How do you housekeep? I have always  used to a physical drive. What is different about the mind set.  I used ICloud to store the contents of my old MBP. Once I download all the files I need, should I turn off ICloud and manage the file locally? I don't like the automatic movement of files when I don't understand the locations.
    Nope, you don't understand it.
If you download a song from the iTunes cloud storage (which is not iCloud) it goes into the iTunes music folder (generally to a subfolder therein)
If you download a document from the iCloud drive it will go wherever you chose to put it.
If you download a photo from the iCloud Photo library it will also go wherever you choose to put it.*
If you move something you have not copied it, if you want to keep a copy on the iCloud drive and in a local folder, you would copy, not move it.
There is no 'automatic' movement, you decide what to store on the iCloud drive (exactly like any other drive) and what to remove.
The iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder, you use it just like any other, copy/paste, save, delete etc.
You can turn the iCloud drive off whenever you like, download the content to a local drive first.
    * Because the iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder there is in fact no need to ever download anything to your Mac, everything on the drive is already on your Mac.

  • I don't understand hidden files

I am new to PE 9. I am trying to find a way to search for tagged photos and have only those that match the search to show up in the window. I don't understand why it has the option to hide the matches, I want to see only the photos that match but that is not an option. There must be something I'm not getting? The photos are in stacks and it still shows the whole stack but I don't want to scroll through thousands of pics to see which ones are a match. Help!!!

Recovery programs can only recover file that have beed deleted when the media space they occupied has not reused and written over.  So if the recovery program did not recover your images. I would be willing to bet some of the space the image occupied has been written over.  So it can not be recovered even though its delete directry enter can be read its data is no longer intact.
Without a system trace you have to rack your brain the remenber all you did.  To get a clue to what wrote to your flash card. Its best to just copy file off flash cards onto your hard disk and remove the card from the card reader with the files still on the flash card.  After processing your images on your computer its a simple quick process to format the flash card in camera.

  • In LR 4: Error message "The file named X.arw is offline or missing" yet I can see the picture?

I can see the pictures even after restarting the computer, but I cannot do anything with them.
Can I transfer the missing files to something useable?  It was oringinally transferred via SDHC card.

The important thing is where are the originals?

  • Error message: the file named "X" is offline or missing

I know that, because I just copied the catalog without negatives, however, I would like to get rid of the message. How can I do that?

You get the "missing file" message if
    a) either the image has been deleted outside of Lr,
    b) or the image has been moved outside of Lr (via Mac Finder / Win Explorer or via Bridge).
In case of (b) right-click the image / folder and select <find missing image/folder> then navigate to the correct location and click on the file/the folder.
If an image has been deleted outside of Lr you can't get rid of the message unless you remove the image from Lr. Right-click the image and select <Remove>.

  • 1.4.1 Windows: File is offline or missing

Some photos I want to work on in my catalog are giving me the offline or missing error message. I may have burned them to a CD, but I didn't mean to delete them when I did, just make a copy. I'm sure they're still in their original folder, but what is the best way to get them back into Lightroom? Thanks.

Ok. I located the folder in the folders panel and found it was in red, not white. I clicked on it and went to library but the synchronize option was grayed out so I'm kind of stuck at this point. Thanks for your help.
