DON'T USE SiS ide driver, it sucks

Using this driver causes my system to hang (the mouse pauses and would not move) for about 1 sec every time there's heavy disk activity, very annoying. This applies to the latest Sis IDE driver on their website and the same is true for their earlier driver
Also using Sandra benchmark the WinXP IDE driver outperforms the one by SiS
645E-Max (645 Ultra version 2.0)
P4B 2.4Ghz
Maxtor ATA100 40Gb
Win XP Pro

My "mouse hesitation" went away after I updated to the latest BIOS ver 3.2 which supports AGP fast write and replace my AGP with a better AGP video card which supports FW.
Now I don;t know if the BIOS fixes it or putting in a new AGP card does but I haven't seen the 1-second mouse hesitation anymore
Also the new BIOS fixes a screen corruption problem which I previously had with the better AGP card

  • Scratch Disc Questions using Firewire External Drive & Imac

Hello. I've read through the existing questions regarding scratch disc and Photoshop, yet can't seem to find an answer to my questions. I would greatly appreciate any tips/advice. Here is my setup and situation:
I am running an iMac with a 2.16 intel core 2 duo processor, 3 GB memory, and running OS X version 10.6.4. I am currently using versions cs3 and cs4 of Photoshop, but plan to upgrade to cs5 soon.
The problem I am having is when running Photoshop, my computer becomes very slow. After reading about possible reasons, I came across a couple of sources (including Adobe themeselves) mentioning that the scratch disc should be a designated drive seperate from the drive containing the operating system. Since I am using an iMac that only allows for one internal drive, my only apparent option seems to be an external drive.
Many people say don't use an external drive, but if you are going to; use an eSATA or firewire. The imac does have firewire 800 capabilities. Should I consider this?
Now I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to purchase a macbook for my next computer (what I wanted to do) because it will also only have one drive, not allowing for a seperate drive for the scratch disc. Any thoughts? I've read around the net but haven't found any definitive answers.

    Designer,
Photoshop benefits greatly from having a scratch disk on a separate physical drive, not on the boot disk or on another partition of the boot disk. It's almost not worth connecting via Firewire 400 because the transfer limitations don't allow much performance improvement. But using a Firewire 800 connection gives excellent performance.
Running Photoshop on a one-drive machine is a little frustrating due to the performance hit without the separate scratch drive.

My neo2 fir don't find ide drive (dvdrom, hard). At the second day after buying the dvdrom disapear from windows and bios(1.8;now 1.9).I saw in net that a lot of people have this problem, but i don't see fixing of this problem

jafarcik, please provide full system specs.  Read the >>Posting Guide<< to get an idea of what we need to know.
Which Windows Version are you using?
As far as I understand it, you have two IDE/PATA drives connected to the Marvell Controller's IDE Port.  How are these drives jumpered?

  • Time Machine formatted itself on my external drive despite pressing "Don't Use"

I have an external hard drive that has been in use on/off for years. I even had backups on it (not using Time Machine). I mounted this hard drive, it was taking a while to mount. A prompt came up to ask if I wanted to use this drive as a time machine backup. I said "Don't Use". It hanged. Meanwhile, I opened disk utility twice. Both I had to force quit. After a while I relaunched finder.
Assuming it would cancel the time machine prompt. Only when did the finder eventually relaunch that the drive mounted to see that all my files where gone and looking in Thermal under ls -a to see their we're spotlight and time machine files along with some oddly named thing. About 1GB Is in use on the drive(I had much more that a gig on it). It is a TB drive
Here is the output from the ls -a on the volume

    .Spotlight-V100
    .fseventsd
    .Trashes

Anyway would a tool like this (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) help get back my files and format back to what I had previously? Or I am going in the wrong direction? What should I do?
Thanks. If you have any questions please reply below

    Thank you Thomas,
I should have mentioned that the drive is formated as FAT32 and I  ran verify disk on the drive and this error keep coming up until I stop the process :
"2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: / has entries after end of directory
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Truncate? no
    2013-02-16 12:06:23 +0000: Extend? no"
Will the tools mentioned in you post work with FAT 32? I am looking at Data Rescue 3 becuase of the FileIQ functionality since I know I have obsure file formats on there
Does this help or it is irrelevant?

  • IBook G4 freezes up when using external firewire drive.  Any ideas??

I have an external hard drive formatted as Apple Partition Map, with Tiger 10.4.11.  I can boot from that drive, but after a while... say, about a minute after it shows everything on the desktop, the iBook freezes.
If I start up from the iBook, I have no problem accessing the files and there are no freezes.  I'd like, however, to start up from the external drive during this week while my MacBook Pro is in the shop.  That way, documents, etc. will remain up to date, I can use various applications I'm used to, and won't have to go through the hassle of transferring settings for various programs to the iBook (or the programs themselves).
Any ideas what's going on here or how to fix it?

Ronda, we're talking past each other!  I wasn't trying to use a cloned drive (MBP or iBook) in any of this!
What I had learned from experience (and from advice here and on the net) was that if you wanted to use an external drive with both an iBook and a MacBook Pro, you needed to format the drive as an Apple Partition Map.  And that is true.
Clearly wrongly, I assumed that if I did a fresh install of Tiger using an Apple Partittion Map, it could boot an iBook.  Clearly, an Intel-Mac installs something in that scenario that makes the drive only bootable from an Intel-Mac.  I had mistakenly thought it was the partition scheme the determined which laptop it could be booted from and used with!
For my future reference--and for any one else who might be in this situation--here's the solution.
    1.  Format the external hard from the iBook.
    2.  Then connect it to your MBP or other more recent device, and drag your home folder and needed programs over to the drive.
    3.  Now, you can boot the external drive using your iBook.
    4.  Any changes to documents, mail (e.g., Eudora), etc. will register on that external drive.
I wish I had thought of that, or been advised to do that.  It would have made short work of reconstructing the MBP's home folder contents on its return--a simple drag and drop operation!

  • Cannot use IDE drive with SATA drive

I just installed a 60GB Maxtor Serial ATA hard drive in VIA port 1. However, when I install my previous Maxtor 20GB EIDE hard drive in IDE1, bootup hangs at the "Serial Ch. 0/Ch. 1 device" detection screen.
Is there a trick to this??? I really need the data off my IDE drive. How do I get an IDE drive to exist along side a pre-installed SATA drive?
And does it matter if the IDE drive is set for Master or Slave?

The IDE drive should be set to "master" or "slave" depending on which connector of the cable you're using.  The IDE cable included with the board clearly labels which is which.
You didn't say but I'll assume you have a K8T Neo.
If you still cannot get it to work, you should try the Promise controller.

  • I cant sync my iphone calendar with my iMac.  It worked fine until two weeks ago.  I don't use iCloud, just direct connect from iphone to iMac.  any ideas?

cant sync iphone with imac - don't use icloud just direct connect - worked fine until a couple of weeks ago.  Any ideas?

    1. Apple has removed sync services in OS X Mavericks. Therefore, you cannot sync Outlook 2011 with Contacts or Calendar.
    2. Apple has removed the ability to sync through iTunes in OS X Mavericks, so that, even if you use Contacts and Calendar on the Mac, you can only sync them with your iPhone through iCloud, thus exposing all your contacts and calendar information to the mercies of the Web.
    3. Microsoft does not not support CalDAV and CardDAV in Outlook, so there is no way to sync directly through iCloud, except perhaps by setting up a Microsoft Exchange account.
    4. Apple makes it extremely difficult (virtually impossible) to revert to a version of OSX that is earlier than OS X Mavericks once Mavericks is installed.
In short, we are screwed and neither company seems to care.

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

  • Using an embedded driver instead of client, and refreshing JList

I am finishing up a simple database interface program that I need to do in order to graduate. There are a couple issues I need to address.
    1. This program is meant to be on one computer with one connection to a database. Currently, when I build the program and run the .jar file, it will not work unless I have manually started the server in Netbeans. Once the server is on, it works like a champ. But since I have to send this to my professor it must work without him doing any additional setup. For this I figured I could use the embeddedDriver, but unfortantely I cant get that to work.
In netbeans I can right click on the main database icon and select "New Connection" and i have the option of choosing the embedded driver yet when i put the database name in and the user and password it gives me the
error: "Unable to add connection. Cannot establish a connection to jdbc:derby:MaxxTrax using org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver (Database 'MaxxTrax' not found).
Why is it that I can use the client driver without a problem yet not the embedded one? And if I cant use the embedded one, how can I set up the client driver so it will automatically start the server (does the end user need to have the server installed or will the clean and build do that)?
    2. Using the netbeans gui builder, i created a jList that I bound to my database's name query. I then have multiple textFields that i bound to whatever jList selection there is and tell it to update with the specified data. My problem is, that I cannot get the jList to "refresh". Right now when I add somebody to the database it visually writes over another persons record, but doesn't actually delete record. So if i could just figure out how to make it look at the database again I could do it automatically after entering in a new record. I've tried nameList.validate(), updateUI() and even tried to copy the ide generated code that actually binds the data but no go.
Once I get these two little things taken care of I am done!! Please help, its greatly appreciated.

I'm not getting much help out there.....anyone??
I need to make the database seem invisible to the end user application.
When I try to use an embedded driver I keep getting errors. In netbeans, I can see the "Java DB(Embedded)" link under drivers, and when I hit connect using.. I input all the correct data and it gives me the following error:
Error: Unable to add connection. Cannot establish a connection to jdbc:derby:MaxxTrax using org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver (Database 'MaxxTrax' not found).
Under the Database setting the pointer for the java db installation and database location are correct. Why can't I connect using the embedded driver, cause using that would make my life so much easier for a single application.

  • Problems setting up RAID on a Mac Pro 2.1 using all 4 drive bays

    Hi,
I'm trying to repurpose my Mac pro as a network storage device and have bought 4 x 3TB WD Red drives so I can use it as 6TB of storage that is mirrored. I'm running into several problems and could do with a bit of advice.
I have tried booting from the OSX Snow Leopard installer and running Disk Utility to setup the RAID 1 system, but every option I try ends up with an error message saying it failed because it was "Unable to find RAID"
If I actually go ahead and install the operating system it will allow me to use Disk Utility setup up the RAID systems on the drives, but only 3 of them as it won't allow me to use the boot disk.
Is it actually possible for me to create a setup where OSX is installed on a RAID system? Currently I'm trying to install OSX to an external drive so it will allow me to setup all 4 of the internal drives as a RAID system...and I was hoping once that is done I can install the operating system on an internal drive
I also tried partitioning one of the drives so that I could install OSX on that and use the rest of the storage for RAID, but the install kept failing.
Can anyone recommend any solutions for this? Currently it seems like my best option might be to permanently use a small external HD as the boot disk, leaving the 4 internal drives to function fully as a RAID system
I was hoping to set up 2 pairs of striped drives that are mirrored. I think this is RAID 10?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    A couple different ideas.
Install OS X somewhere else, then use CCC to clone to your array.
    Don't use 1+0 type array.
Invest in SoftRAID and set up a 3-drive mirror - you have to shutdown to swap drives, but you can do a better mirror and faster rebuild plus it uses all drives in a mirror for reads so performance is enhanced.
People had mixed results and support using a 4-drive mixed mirror+stripe setups.
Apple's "Pro RAID" card has had I think poor support, limited to 2.2TB but could do RAID5.
Put the system on PCIe SSD blade XP941, bootable in Mac Pro 1,1 and above running 10.5.x and above; and then have a good clone and restore, and put all the data on your array - and I would still go for a simpler mirror-only with http://www.softraid.com

  • Laptop died and trying to use the hard drive as an external

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum and did a search, but couldn't find the answer to my problem. I was using a Dell laptop with a Toshiba hard drive. I'm not sure what the model number is, but I think it's hdd2193.
At any rate, the laptop died (it stopped accepting power, nothing to do with the hard drive) but it died with some files on it that I need. Everywhere I looked on the web, it said that all you need to do when this happens is get an external enclosure and plug it in.
I did this and when I plug it in, Windows XP asks me to format my drive! It recognizes it is there, but won't access any of the files.
After some research, somebody informed me that certain Toshiba hard drives are locked to the laptop they came from, and as a result, might not work in an external hard drive enclosure. I need to know if this is the case, and if so, what I can do about it. If this is not the case, then I need to know why it's asking me to format, and how I can access my files. (If necessary, what data recovery program I could use to get my data off of it.)
Keep in mind that there was NOTHING wrong with the hard drive when I pulled it out of the laptop, and I was very careful about disconnecting and connecting it, so I don't believe the hard drive is corrupted. I think there is something else that's wrong, perhaps even the external hard drive enclosure.
Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

MK4026GAX is the model number.  That makes it a 40gig IDE 2.5" 9.5mm 5400RPM internal laptop hard drive.
That enclosure is one that is well known to have problems.  I would say that the problem is with the enclosure personally, but without having it here to test I can only be about 90% certain of that.  But since it draws it's power from the USB port I would have to lean in that direction. Comments on the Newegg site, along with comments I have read elsewhere show that the problem you are having is well known to happen with that enclosure though.  If you can try plugging it into a POWERED USB hub or directly into one of the motherboards USB ports.  Those normally supply more power than the USB ports mounted on the front of the case.  Also, do NOT use a USB extension cord as they tend to cause issues with these types of USB powered enclosures.  I normally use one of these to retrieve data from hard drives. http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0285941  I've found them to be much more reliable and easier to use than an enclosure for temporary use.  I've yet to have a working drive that it won't work with.  Plus it works with ALL SATA and IDE hard drives from laptops and desktops.
I know for a fact that it isn't a FAT file system, as that only recognizes hard drive partitions up to 2gigs in size.  If it's Windows XP it's either FAT32 or NTFS.  Since both systems have XP then it wouldn't matter as XP supports both.  I have no idea about the Mac as I don't use them (they aren't reliable enough and too many limitations to be usefull to me).
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Install G3 IDE Drive into G5 - will it work?

Hi, My old G3 400MHz iMac died after a power cut and I can't easily resurrect it this time. Is it possible to temporarily install its drive into my G5 to transfer the data it contains onto the main drive?
I've used Macs for many years but never had to get technical before, and don't want to break anything.
Apologies to all, if this is a question you see regularly. I ran various searches on the forum first, but couldn't find anything to match.
Thanks for any help and suggestions.
    G5 Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

So the answer is no, an ATA/IDE drive cannot be substituted for a SATA drive in a G5?
You can buy little ATA to SATA converter boards that allow you to use legacy ATA drives with a SATA controller. However, depending on their size and whether they're vertically or horizontally mounted, they may or may not fit into the G5s drive bays. With G4s they'll fit into some drive bays but not others.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/ide-sata/
According to Apple they're not officially supported, although that doesn't mean they don't work:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86416
Perhaps someone has had some success using one. I'd be tempted to put the money towards a new SATA drive though instead.
