Don't want AIR with Reader

Has anybody been able to perform an installion of Reader 9.1 WITHOUT Air? I have the distribution copy of Reader and I can't figure out how to do it. I've even deleted the related AIR files in the setup directory but it STILL installs.
I've tried using both ORCA and the Customization Wizard but neither was any help.

I used the smaller executable. I have no idea what the large executable includes. It's twice the size!
After I installed the executable, I go to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Setup Files
I use the files in that directory to distribute on my network.

    Yes, it's in your Applications folder and is called "Install OS X". Make sure to empty your trash afterwards to clear the space.

  • Singleton? Don't want to keep reading database

    Hi there,
    I have a java web application, when it starts up I want it to load some information into a singleton so that all requests for this information come from memory not via a database call. The information will change very infrequently but I don't want to hard-code it (I guess I could use a property file). Anyway if I use a singleton will it not be garbage collected as soon as no other objects reference it? If it's garbage collected then the next time some accesses it another database call with be made and I don't want that to happen. I want this object to reside in memory always (it's not large so the hit is not that great). The singleton will basically hold a Vector of "objects" and one of this "objects" attributes is another Vector. To populate it requires 3 trips to the database each time. I would prefer 3 trips up front upon application loading and then no more until a restart occurs. Any suggestions?
    Cheers, Max

    The Singleton pattern is a fairly straightforward pattern. I have used it succesfully several times. Here is an example.
    public class GetInfo {
      private static GetInfo singleton;
      private static Object dataSavedInMemory;
      //Prevent anyone from instantiating this object
      private GetInfo() {
      private static synchronized void initialize() {
        singleton = new GetInfo();
        //One time database processing to save data in memory would go here
        dataSavedInMemory = new String("Hello World");  //just for illustration purposes
      public static GetInfo instance() {
        if (singleton == null)
          initialize();
        return singleton;
      public Object getData() {
        return dataSavedInMemory;
      //Example usage
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        //Get data saved in memory
        Object data = GetInfo.instance().getData();
        System.out.println(data);
        //or
        GetInfo inst = GetInfo.instance();
        Object data2 = inst.getData();
        System.out.println(data2);
    }

  • Don't want jobs with a past date to run on Database import

    I can't get a good straight answer from our DBA on how to accomplish what I need. Here is the scenario...
    I have a number of scheduled jobs in our Oracle 9i installation that run each night from 12:00 a.m. on. Over the past few months we have had some infrastructure issues that caused corruption in the Oracle databases and necessitated a restore from backup. Sometimes a full import from a dmp file. My problem is that if the database had been down before and after the scheduled jobs Oracle sees that there is a job that needed to be run in the past but has not yet run. So, when the database is brought back up all of those latent jobs run immediately.
    The problem is that I don't want them to run when the database is recovered and need to control this process manually.
    What is the best way to bring Oracle back up and flag it to not run any jobs that were scheduled in the past?
    Thanks for any help.

    Easy.
    Set job_queue_processes to 0 before doing the import. After the import, delete jobs you don't want (or change their next run date using dbms_job). Then set job_queue_processes back to the value you want.
    The fact that the DBA team considers an export as a backup is probably the reason you couldn't get an answer to this simple question. That is a topic for another thread.

  • Adobe wants Air - with conditions

    Adobe Air sent a popup regarding it's function and wants me to reinstall CS6. I've still got CS5, as well. Is the reinstall routine straight forward? Are there tips, hints and warnings? Do I need a 10 year old and a bag of Oreos? Do they still make Oreos? And what does Adobe Air smell like, anyway? I never use it myself.

    Bummer. I am from, but not of, your people, and speak the language of the old ones with the understanding of a door knob. If you turn me, I will adjust. Creativity and perception are lost to me. And so, your language and my understanding work together to keep me just beyond your offer of help. I am too far from your shore. I shall bob around out here, cold and alone because, now that I think about it, I may not be authorized, either. I wonder what that means. And why should this young one care? How did I get this far without it? This is a TSA thing, right? Am I toast?

  • Forms don't view properly with Reader on Windows

    I recently made a PDF form on my Mac with InDesign CS3 and Acrobat 8. My client opens it up in Preview on Mac, fills out the fields on the form, and sends the filled out form to her clients. It views and prints fine on her end, as well as anyone who receives it on a Mac and opens it in Preview or Reader, but recipients using Windows on a PC get a form with only blank areas where all the filled in fields are.
    Can anyone suggest how I can fix this situation? Thanks!

    This is a known problem when Preview is used to fill and save a PDF form. Preview has limited support for forms and in fact corrupts them when it saves. More information is available here: http://kb2.adobe.com/community/publishing/885/cpsid_88564.html

  • Flash player crashes my win 7 64 sys -  I don't want flash, get rid of it...

    I have a new win 7 64bit system on a AMD Asus 880G box. It freezes once or twice a day, with Side-By-Side, AIR related errors. EVERY TIME I restart after a freeze/crash, it starts with a Adobe Flash Update nag screen at startup (every single time!) Event logs ALWAYS show SBS AIR related errors.
    I've been a Photoshop user since PS4, and have updated all the way to CS5. I use/need, that is, I need PS. I don't want Flash, I don't want AIR, or Device Central or Adobe Updater or any other crap.
    I had a stabile sys, after installing CS5, when I uninstalled every thing Adobe that wasn't PS or Bridge. Then the sys was reliable. But I couldn't open a PDF; no Adobe Reader!?!  So after installing Adobe Reader from the PS CS5 disk, I'm back to square one, and Flash up-dater and crashes.
    I won't say that I hate Adobe people, but I would like to find a way to have PS CS5 and some new current version of a PDF Reader, and nothing else; no auto-crash Flash up-dater crap, no AIR, no other crap.
    Is this possable; any help would be very much appreciated, thank you, Jim

    Thank you very much for the reply.
    I didn't know that Flash is a necessary component of Photoshop CS.
    I'll try to be more specific about the problem that I have, I'm sorry I wasn't more clear in my first posts. (This is more frustrating than you can probably imagine.)
    I can uninstall everything that is shown as Adobe, except PS and Bridge, that is, I've uninstalled everything Adobe that's not PS and bridge, and then have had an installation that shows only PS and Bridge in 'programs' and the 'Control Panel'. That configuration seems to be stable and reliable, run for about a week with no problems (I didn't know that Flash is still installed, but I'm not having problems.)  But then there is no PDF reader installed (no Acrobat Reader).
    I've then down loaded and installed the latest Acrobat Reader, and I back to having the Flash Updater problems/crashes. And I get Adobe Updater popup screens, prompting updates (?). And I also get the Windows security warning popups, "Adobe website wants to down load programs to your computer".
    I make my living with photography (and Photoshop). I'm trying to have a computer with PS and Bridge and some useful PDF reader, BUT no automatic updates or down loads.
    Again, I don't know for sure that this is the cause of the problem, but with 20-30 crashes, the only error reports consistant are the SXS AIR. And on every restart the Flash Updater popup is on screen at start-up. When I start-up any other time, from a normal or good shut down, the Flash Updater popup screen has never been up on start-up.
    Is it possable to get new Acrobat Reader installed and be able to disable or uninstall all of the automatic communication and update stuff?
    thank you
    PS, Photoshop installed is CS5 (64 bit)
    PPS, not sure now about eidnolb's post, not sure that Flash is part of and necessary to PS (??)

  • Bundling of McAfee Security Scan with Reader download is deceptive

    I know that there is a checkbox to select to include the security scan but I honestly believe that you have deliberately layed out the page in a way that would cause most to miss this checkbox.  I believe you are familiar with Gestalt Principles and know that people naturally deal with separate columns of text as seprate items. I believe you are taking advantage of this to maximize the number of people who unknowingly install Security Scan along with their Adobe reader.
    I disagree with the idea of including the extra software by default and wish you would stop. If you insist on continuing with that, please change the download page layout to make it more clear that you are getting software you don't want along with the software you are looking for.

    We're simply fellow users like yourself so can't do anything about this.
    BUT, it is deceptive and if it helps, many people agree with you on this (including myself). At best, they should have the check box set as an opt-in rather than opt-out.
    There are a few threads going in the forum that is geared more towards the adobe.com site at http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/adobedotcom_feedback. You can join in on any one of them. It is also more prone to being seen by someone that can make a change.
