Don't Want Mail App as a Default app

If I am answering an email on yahoo or hotmail or gmail and I click a "mailto" link, Mail pops up as the default app as opposed to me being able to respond inside whatever I am presently using. How do I keep this from happenning? Thanks for the help to all who respond to this.

Ernie,
Thanks for your reply.
Well I am not trying to use any e-mail clients at this moment. All I am doing is using hotmail, or yahoo mail for e-mail. This little problem happens only when I click on an embedded link inside of an email that I recieved, that is prompting me to repond via email, i.e. "click here to email tech support". If I do this the Mail client in OS X comes popping up when all I wanted was the "compose email" section of yahoo or hotmail to actually come up so I can type the email. Does this help clarify my issue? Thanks again for your help.

  • I don't want Mail to be the default when I contact someone

When a website contains a 'contact us' link, Mail automatically opens when I click the link. How do I change this? I have never been able to send & receive e-mail properly with Mail and it is useless for Mail to automatically open because I can't use it anyway.
    Thanks for any advice!

Set Mail > Preferences > General > Default Email Reader to whatever mail client you want to be the default.
Yes, unless your preferred mail client has a similar option to do the same, you’re supposed to use Mail in order to specify that you don’t want to use Mail, and in Mac OS X 10.4 you wouldn’t even be able to do that without setting up a mail account in Mail first.

  • Is there a way to password protect certain apps from being used? Example I don't want my child to access my apps while he's using his on the iPad

Is there a way to password protect certain apps from being used? Example I don't want my child to access my apps while he's using his on the iPad. I don't want to lock him out of the iPad. Let him use Angry birds, but not Sims or Games not appropriate for him that I play.

Sorry, but it is not possible to restrict use of specific apps other that the few restrictions provided in the Restrictions settings, not unless the app itself provides some sort of lock. If you don't want your child playing certain games, the only answer is to not load them on the iPad he uses.

  • New Mac - Don't want Mail auto downloading all my old emails.

I am getting a new Mac and from previous experience, once you open Mail it automatically downloads all the old emails situated on your ISP's mail server.
As I have got these emails saved on my present computer I don't want all 1,500 of them downloading to my new Mac.
I could prevent it by deleting the emails on my ISP's mail server but I want to keep them there as an independent  backup.
Is there any way I can configure Mail to ensure that it only downloads new emails and not the old ones?

I've been mulling this over overnight and wanted to follow up.
The only thing I can think of is if your email is set up using the older POP technology, you could do this one of two ways:
1/ migrate your mail across, then from within the mail app, delete whats there (ensure your delete from server settings are switched to off - if only for this section).  This will tell the server that you've already downloaded the existing mail and it ill only download new emails.  IMPORTANT: this will only work for a POP Account.
2/ Again, POP only but you could alternatively redownload all the mail, and perform the #1 steps.
As for IMAP accounts, these by nature Sync with the server, so I think you're firmly out of luck.

  • I am having difficulty downloading APPS in my IPAD2. iCloud keeps on reinstalling APPS. And about iTunes, do I have to keep the APPS I downloaded through iTunes? Because I only have a Mac Air 11 64G, so I don't want to back up my iPad apps in the Mac.

Help? I keep on moving in circles. If I download the app through itunes and i go online with the ipad, icloud reinstalls the apps. Then if I download apps with the ipad and I plug it into the Mac, iTunes is forcing me to copy the purchases I made on the iPad to my iTunes. I don't want to keep too many files on the Mac, so I remove them from the iTunes, and if iTunes suddenly decides to force me to synce, I lose a lot of other Apps that I didn't even download using iTunes. I am very confused. How do I do this manually? I don't want to back up everything in the laptop because it's memory is very limited.

Did you ever resolve the iCloud problem.I am in the same position and its driving me mad!!! If you have a link to an solution I would appreciate it.

  • DON'T WANT MAIL AS DEFAULT

When I go to a website that shows an e-mail link & I click on it, the computer
automatically opens a window in the "Mail" program that I never use AND it doesn't show the e-mail address of the party. Thus, I can't cut & paste it into the Cinti Bell web-mail system that I use.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop "Mail" from opening up when I click on an e-mail link? (I already looked all through the menus in Mail and also in Mac OS System Preferences and didn't see a way to make it stop being the default).

    1) BUY an e-mail client program, and set the Mail default to that, OR
You don't have to BUY any email client. The Mail.app is free and if you don't prefer or like using the Mail.app as your email client, you can download and use Thunderbird which is free.
    http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
    2) SET the Mail program's default to a browser which in my case it
would be Safari, and that would take me to my preset Safari homepage
(Apple site) and then I would have to go to the Cinti Bell, do a new log-in,
and them open my web-mail (which may already be open), OR
Correct and you can set the Home page to be the log in page for your webmail account.
Personal preference but webmail access is primarily designed to access an email account from any computer with internet access when away from your computer. I prefer using an email client on my computer to access my email accounts and I use webmail access for an account only when away from my computer which is my only option.
    3) USE "the sledge hammer approach" and delete Mail program from
the computer (it can't be the default if it doesn't exist; this may be
the cheapest in terms of money & time)
Not a good idea since the default email reader selected in Mail when deleting the application will be used and cannot be changed later without using a 3rd party utility to do so.

  • I don't want "Mail" to open when I respond to website, instead I want Earthlink mail to send the response

Hi, newbie here.  I do not use Apple "Mail" (nor do I want to).  Problem: in websites I respond/click to respond and "Mail" automatically opens up.  How do I configure the MacBook Pro 10.7 to not go to the default of "Mail?"  I have looked at mail preferences and it gives me the option of "mail" in the general section or choose; when I hit choose I get my apps etc and do not see how I would indicate to use my earthlink email or charter email as defaults.  Any suggestions?

You can't select Web Based email for this purpose. You have to chose a email prgram on your computer.
What you would need to do is copy the email address and then go to youe Web Based email and send from that.

  • Don't want to reinstall 10.8 from app store i have the disc but how? HELP!

Turned my Imac on the other day and it keept getting stuck at the start, so i started disc utility by long pressing alt. Verified disc, which faild and verified permission which also failed. • Don't want mail account to sync with online email account

I just got a new mac mini and will soon quit using my imac that I bought around 2006 10.6.8.
    I am setting up Mail.
Can I get it to work the way my old mail did.
    The problem
In the past my gmail would download to mail and if I deleted an email on my computer in Mail, it would delete.  I have 1172 old emails online on my gmail account and I want to keep them there.  Now when I deleted the messages that downloaded on my computer mail program, they reappear.  It seems as if it is syncing with what is online.
My husband's yahoo account downloads to Mail.  Before I only got what was in his inbox.  Sometimes people send me mail to his address, this way I have can check this on my computer.  When I set up his yahoo account in Mail, all of his folders and emails downloaded.  No big deal, I could delete the emails and they still remain on his online yahoo account.  The problem is that it downloaded all of his folders and mail won't let me delete the folders.
It's nice to have the new mini mac but I have to figure out what is different, especially on programs that I use a lot.
backed up my documents, music and photos and more on an external hardrive.  I would like to transfer folders and the emails they contain from the old mac.  Does anyone know how I find them?  I basically put all the files in home folder on the external drive.  I didn't know if I would find them under Library or what.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had it set as imap and did not realize it.  it was Pop that I wanted.  Now it is pop and I am getting what I want.  Thanks.

  • My boyfriend's laptop died yesterday and I want to sync his phone with my mac (and back-up all of his data) but I don't want to lose all of his apps, photo's, etc whilst doing so. Is this possible?

My boyfriend's laptop died yesterday and I was hoping to be able to back up all of his data (photos, contacts, so forth) from his iPhone 4 onto my mac, but I don't know how to do it without completely erasing all of his data? Is it possible? If so, how can I do it?
    Any help is appreciated!!
    Thanks

Just an FYI, your purchases from iTunes are associated to your Apple ID. So Apps, Music, Videos, etc, that were purchased on the App Store/iTunes are freely available to him when using his Apple ID even after restoring (ie: by going to the Purchased tab in iTunes, etc). You can sync his contacts and photos to iCloud (or other free services).

  • HT4972 I want to update my iPad OS, but don't want to loose the movies and apps currently on it.  What can I do?

I bought the original iPad as soon as it was released.  I ended up with lots of movies and apps for my kids.  Now I want to update to the latest iOS.  When I go to update it says that iTunes can do the update but will not save my apps and movies.  I do not want to lose the apps or the movies.  Is there a way to update (hopefully relatively easily) without losing the movies and apps?

If you had been syncing with iTunes all along, you should probably have a little better insight as to how this works.
Yes your device will be erased as part of the updating process. Your backup should be restored at the end of the update. But .... Be proactive anyway. As long as you do your part, everything should work out fine.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

  • Don't want Mail to group emails with same subject together

I got a new computer and now am using 10.8.4.  Mail is different.  I sent out an email to 20 people with the same subjuect line and text and when people replied, MaiL would put other replies all together on one long email.  I like seeing my replies separately in my inbox.  Can I change that?
Also a real estate agent sends me new listings with the subject New Listing Updates.  So she sent me three today and they were all three in one email.  I almost forgot to scroll to see that there were two more after I read the first one.  I want them to be separate in my inbox.  Seems like it is the same problem as above.
    Thanks for any tips
