Don't want playback to copy to library

If I play a file - music, or movie - iTunes automatically makes a copy of the file and puts it in one of its folders. Is there some way I can stop that? I want it to copy when I import something into the library, but for one-time only playbacks, it's annoying to have to keep deleting files.

Roger Barre wrote:
What I want is for it to make a copy when I want to add it to the library. But sometimes I just want to play it once and not add it to the library. Is the only way to do that to play it with QT?
Roger, Yes, QT or some other player that is not iTunes. (I use Winamp for exactly that purpose, but not on the Mac.)
When you decide you want it in the library, then play it in iTunes.
And, it sounds like you want the "Copy files..." option on.
Is there no way to play it in iTunes and not add it to the library automatically?
Correct. There is no way. That is how iTunes works.

If you check songs, simply sync the entire library.
But I highly recommend (and it is far simpler) to create a playlist (or multiple playlists) and select only that playlist to sync.
    Leave everything checked.
Then simply add/remove from these playlists and sync away.

  • I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically put in the Cloud or do I have to push iTunes Match. I certainly don't want to upload the whole library again. Thanks

I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically sent to the Cloud or do I have to click on iTunes Match? I certainly don't want to start the whole upload process over again. Thanks

It should do so automatically, if not check it's staus this way.
In iTunes press "Command J" or select "View Options," under the view menu. In the popup window check iCloud Status. It will now appear as one of the columns in your main iTunes window.
This column will show which of your songs are matched, uploaded, ineligible, etc.
When you navigate to the song you downloaded you will see it's iCloud status.
If the status says, "waiting," and you want it available on Match now, then in the iTunes "Store," menubar pulldown, select "Update iTunes Match."
It will scan your drive, and update all status'.
You will not have to upload everything again.
Even if in iTunes you turn Match off, and back on again.
    Match remembers you!

  • Reformatting my hard drive but don't want to lose my itunes library

I want to reformat my hard drive, but want to make sure that I do not lose my itunes library information when doing so. I save all of my itunes songs on an external hard drive so the reformatting won't effect the actual files. What I want to know is how do I preserve all of the information like my play counts, last played, and ratings. So that after I have reconnected my external hard drive after the format, it will still have all of the same play counts, etc. as before. Thanks.

  • No, I don't want to share my iTunes library between users.

My wife and I have accounts on my Mini, and separate iTunes libraries. We also have our own iPods tied to our own iTunes setups.
Problem is with fast user switching. If I plug in my iPod, if her profile has iTunes running *at all*, it won't connect to my iTunes. I have to switch over to her ID and terminate iTunes and switch back to get my iPod connected correctly. The inverse is true for when she plugs in her iPod.
Is this a known issue? Is there something I can tweak? Is there an automator script I could use to make sure the other user's iTunes is down? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

good gracious. that sounds like the sort of issues that folks get with Windows XP Fast User Switching.
... by any chance, are you running Bootcamp on the Mini, and running two different XP user accounts?

  • HT1364 I recently got a new laptop but I can't retrieve my iTunes folder from my old pc, how do I get my library on my new laptop as I don't want to set up a new one.

I recently had to buy a new laptop as my pc no longer worked.  I can't get my iTunes media folder off my old pc so how do I get my library onto my new laptop as I don't want to create a new library and erase everything off my iPhone.

There is no such thing as a "sub-account."  Also, you probably mean iTunes library, when you say "account."  Your "account" in iTunes is your Apple ID, which is what you use to sign in to the iTunes Store to make purchases.  iPods are associated with an iTunes library, not with an Apple ID (iTunes Store account).  You'll need to clarify...
So, this is what I think you are saying.  You previously shared an iTunes library on a computer with your friend.  Your old iPod was synced to that iTunes library.
You got an iPhone, and at that time, you set up your own iTunes library.  Is that on a different computer?  How does the iPhone affect your question about the iPod?
You got a new iPod.  What is your "old iTunes"?  Is that the iTunes library you shared with your friend?

  • I have my iTunes library on my iPad. My husband wants to set up a library on his iPhone. How can we do this without screwing up my library or losing it altogether?

I Have a iTunes library with approx. 3000 songs on it and my husband has an iPod that has his music. He wants to create a new library for his new iPhone.  I would like to know if we can create a new library for him without effecting my library. And we don't want to sync my whole library to his phone. I am also afraid of losing my library. Is there a way to have 2 separate libraries for 2devices? if it's possible, how do you set it up on a Mac?

    Hello dartal,
Indeed, a new library can be created on your Mac. In order to create a new library and to switch between the libraries, hold the Option key on your keyboard while you open iTunes.

  • I don't want to restore my iPhone !

I have this photo library on my iPhone5 that I don't want and it seems I can only delete it if I connect my iPhone to my laptop. BUT when I try it says that I need to restore my iPhone but I don't want to. This photo library is taking up too much space. I can't download music or apps or anything because there's not enough room. I just want to get rid of it please there has to be another way to delete it or something?!?!??

You could erase your entire iPhone and set it up as new:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
Erasing or restoring are about your only two options.

  • I clicked something and it started importing all my emails from other account. How do I make it stop. I Don't want them all

    Can I do this?
It started importing and I can't get it to stop. How can I stop it

it is useful to offer some info on what type of account you're talking about.
    '''POP'''
Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
So if you do not want older emails downloading, then you need to access your webmail account using a browser and move all older emails into a suitable folder, but not the Inbox, then Thunderbird cannot see them.
By default, it usually downloads and deletes the copy on the server, but you can change this preference.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
select: 'leave messages on the server'
    optional:
select: 'for at most xx days'
this will delete anything older than specified number of days
    select 'Until I delete them'
when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
click on Ok to save settings.
    '''Stopping a download:'''
There is a button you can add to the Mail toolbar.
    * View > Toolbars > customise
    or
    * Menu Icon > Options > Toolbar Layout
Drag the 'Stop' icon onto toolbar.
close Customise window - top right X.
click on 'Stop' icon to stop current action of download.
    '''IMAP:'''
IMAP mail accounts see a remote view of the subscribed folders on the server, so you would see whatever is in any subscribed folder.
You can choose to synchronize subscribed folders and select settings to limit what is downloaded.
Tools > Account Settings > synchronization & storage.

Hi I followed instructions to copy/move iTunes music to a new PC. I can see albums listed in the library but SYNCH will not put any music on my new iPod.

Take a look here; it should help:
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content. And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced -> General preferences before you do. Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
If you won't be using that Windows system once you move the content, don't forget to deauthorize the system from your iTunes Store account before you dispose of the computer.
    Regards.

  • I recently purchased a song and my entire song library was deleted after it downloaded. The photos and aps are still there, but no tunes. Anyone know how to fix this? I have songs loaded on the ipod that I don't want to loose and they are not in MY itunes

I recently purchased a song from itunes and when the song downloaded, it deleted/removed my entire song library. Only leaving the one song.
My photos and aps are still there, but no songs. Anyone ever encounter this and how do you fix it? I  don't want to loose my songs as some are not in MY itunes library. Help

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

  • PC died and in turn my main iTunes library. iPhone was synced to it. Now when I try to connect to another library it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library. Any way around that? Don't want to lose music.

My PC died and in turn so did my main iTunes library.  My iPhone was synced to the library that is gone.  Now when I try to connect to another library, it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library.  Any way around that?  I don't want to lose the music that is on my phone.  I am looking for a way to tell the phone to "forget" the old library and let me start working with a new library.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos, etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

  • My songs have all been duplicated.  All my music is on external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Am using a new computer and thought I'd done all the required things for my library to show on iTunes 11.

I'm using a new computer.  All my music is on an external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Before installing iTunes on the new computer, I followed turingtest2's instructions as to the layout of all the iTunes folders (Itunes folder, Itunes Media, Music, etc...).  I also followed his instructions as to get all my music in iTunes on the new computer (but keeping all the media on the external drive).  Now my songs are all duplicated in my library (I normally have about 15,000 of them). They all play when I click onto them.  Also, I've lost all my playlists, and all the songs in the library are now ticked. I've already spent hours trying to sort this out, but can't seem to find a solution.  Help please!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.
    Patrice
