Don't want zip files as attachments

Sometimes a document such as Word or Excel will appear as a zip in my message when I attach it. I do not want to send a zip file. How can I stop Apple from converting it? I have an iBook G4 with Tiger. Yahoo says they are not doing it, problem is caused by Apple. Note: I have the Apple Microsoft conversion program so my documents are fully workable. Usually I can fix the Word or PDF attaching problem by exporting and saving as a different type of file, but this is not an option for Excel.

Adam, it does have Show Package Contents.
As far as I know, it is an Excel file. It is a stand-alone document, consisting of several sheets containing various information - the whole file is a listing of various Scouting organizations, such as packs, troops and posts. But, it is one single file, just with various pages.
To me, this is not a package.
But, and this relates to another member's suggestion, the file name does not have a xls suffix. When I try to save it as the file name with xls, I am told it cannot be saved as an Excel file because it is a Numbers file. All I know is when the Scout Office sent it to me, they sent it as an Excel file, and I am able to open, read and edit it because of my Apple-supplied Microsoft converter software.
I don't know where to go now with this. The only way I can send it back with my changes is to convert it to a PDF file.
Thanks for any help you and the others can give me.

in iPhoto how do I stop files from auto resizing as they import? I don't want my files reduced to 72. The option to choose size on the export menu not suitable for up sizing, as you can't restore the quality removed.

Short answer: They are not resizing, there is no quality lost. The dpi is only set when you decide what size you're printing at
Longer answer:  Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing. Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • Allow Zip Files as Attachments in PDFs

As many of you are aware, newer versions of Acrobat have removed the ability to open or save zip files attached to a PDF (without a complex registry hack).
Notice that I've attached a zip file to this post. Adobe: If you've deemed zip files safe enough to be hosted and delivered in your own forums, maybe they're safe enough to be reinstated in PDFs?
I believe no product should force security on its users without providing them any practical way to override. Web browsers, email clients, and operating systems warn you of potentially dangerous files and then let the client make the choice. What if it's a zip file from a trusted source full of harmless text documents? Too bad - because Acrobat says so. Acrobat makes no attempt to examine the zip file to see if perhaps its contents are dangerous - it just sweepingly decides zips are far too dangerous to let the user have any voice in the matter. I fundamentally disagree.
I think Adobe got this one wrong - and I cast a vote that they loosen the noose on zip files on a future release. I'd like to hear other users' thoughts on this issue. Adobe is good at listening to their users - so tell them what you think.
    Cheers,
    Dan

This information is for Acrobat Professional users in Windows XP. I don't know if it
is valid for PCs using only Acrobat Reader.
Adobe is wrong but that doesn't mean we have to live with their problem.
Since when does anyone open attachments from unknown or unsolicited sources?
Some zip files can be or contain executables (.exe) but that is no excuse for not
knowing where your emails or files come from and not having up to date virus software.
Adobe did not disallow zip file attachments, they just buried the enable so deep
that the average user would never find it and using an editor (regedit) that most users
have never heard of. As far as I am concernced, without any word from the Adobe
    Tower, this is pure marketing.
I have inserted a jpeg photo that shows, for Windows XP, where to find the hidden enable
and how to edit to allow opening OR saving (recommended) zip files. This is the
file I have been passing to my Engineers and suppliers. The information comes from
a help call I put in to Adobe.
Editting the registry is not difficult, you just need to be sure that nothing unusual
happens while editting the text or saving after done. Have an IT person or other
superuser do the edit if you are unsure. After editting and saving, select  BuiltInPermList,
then pulldown  File   and click   Export. This produces a one-click edit that will fix the
problem on any Windows XP computer.
Adobe is also blocking rar, tar and tgz compressions.
This edit needs to repeated anytime Acrobat is reinstalled.

Check the first "if". • I don't want copies of outgoing attachments saved in "sent" mailbox. Tried Attachment extractor and it sort of worked and then deleted a big bunch of emails.

I have been using Thunderbird for a few months and after a while it started doing really weird things. I found out that it was 98% full according to the progress bar at the bottom.
I downloaded attachment extractor add-on and it worked ok and freed up space and NO percentage or progress bar was shown for a while until of course it filled up again after just a week or so.
All I want to do is stop Thunderbird from saving a copy of the outgoing attachments in the "sent" mail folder. It's totally unnecessary as I keep the original files in a folder and don't need another copy. I specially don't need copies filling up space and causing Thunderbird to make a big mess.
Is there a way to change settings to do this and if not PLEASE tell me why there is not.
It makes much more sense to me to have the option of NOT saving exact copis of every outgoing attachment.
It also saves the signature file, a separate copy for each outgoing email. This is silly and also absolutely unnecessary.

I see now that there is a check box near the attachment window that can be used to NOT save a copy of the attachment in the "sent" folder.
    Thanks.
Just one thing else I noticed that after checking the box ALL options for message text etc. are grayed out so it is best to check box after completing the message body.
Thanks again. It saves a lot of space. Now it's just the 1000's of junk mail every day eating up all the space. I should likely set it to automatically delete junk mail after a couple of days but I'm not sure if I accidentally mark good mail as junk sometimes so it's good to keep it around for a while just in case something has to be unmarked as junk. I don't know how I could get to the junk list if the junk mail is deleted.

  • I don't want PDF files openning in Firefox, I want them to open in Adobe Reader

Both old PDF files that I have saved and new PDF files I have made and downloaded are openning in Firefox. Some people my like that but I don't, please tell me how to shut this off.

    Hello Osprey,
If you are using Windows, you have to right-click a .pdf file, then click on "open with", here you can choose with which program the PDF files will be automatically opened.
Another solution is to go in your control panel, then in "Default Programs", you'll be able to do the same. You can refer to [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-default-programs#1TC=windows-7 this article] .

How do I get iWeb to open another iWeb backup file? (Made a mistake and don't want current file iWeb is pointing to)

    Thanks Roddy.
FYI- I downloaded the "Domain.sites2" file from your page (because I deleted mine yeterday)  So now the file is sitting on my desktop in my "Download" window.
I see the good back-up file I want to use on my desktop, but when I go to drag the file from my desktop and drop it in "Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb", it does not take.  I am not allowed to drop files on that iWeb page directly.  (I tried to drop the the "Domain.sites2" file from the Download window, but that also does not allow me to drag and drop it directly to the iWeb folder.)

  • I record multiple tracks (3-5) from real instruments and vocals. I want to send these files to a collaborator to add more tracks to, but Garageband wants to mix these down (which I don't want). How can I send the multiple tracks files to my friend?

I record multiple tracks of real instruments and vocals wth Garage Band. I want to share the file with a collaborator so he can add another instrument or two. I have not found a way to do this without the process mixing down the tracks. I don't want them mixed down like when I send them to Itunes. Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes. I thought I saw a method to do this with software instruments, but how do you do it with real instruments? I've tried every process on the "export" list to try to accomplish this, without success. Thanks for any breakthrough advice on this!

As isteveus said - for large projects uploading to a server would be best.
Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes.
But for completeness's sake , you cou can mail a project, if you ctrl-click the project and use "Compress xxx.band". This will compress the project and create a zip file, that you can mail (if it is not too large). But ask your friend for the maximal file size allowed as a mail attachment.
But whichever method you use to share your project, be sure you include all loops and instruments, if your friend does not have the same JamPacks installed. You can bundle the loops into the project by saving it as an archive. "File > Save as" and check the "Archive Project" option.
If this option should be disabled, you can force it to become active by editing your project slightly. It is only available, if the project needs saving.

  • I DON'T want attachments to show in the text of the Mail email

I DON'T want attachments to show in the text of the email.
My company just switched over to Mail today. Every time we send an email with a .pdf attachment, it shows the attachment in the text body of the email. We don't want that to happen. How do I prevent this from happening?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mail 2.1.1

    You can't.
The Mail.app displays all image/photo and single page PDF attachments inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default - sending and receiving.
You can control-click on a viewed in place attachment and select View as Icon but the icon for the attached file will remain in the body of the message. Regardless, depending on the recipient's email client and available preference settings, such attachments may appear inline or viewed in place when the message is opened by the recipient (as with the Mail.app when receiving such attachments) or as attached files only which must be opened separately to be viewed for which the sender has no control over.
This was a minor adjustment for me at first but I now prefer such attachments being displayed inline since I have confirmation that I selected the correct file or file names as attachments before the message is sent.

  • PI FTP get zip file and want to unzip with origin filenames

    Hello everybody,
we get zip files from ftp and want to unzip this file in one target directory (file adapter). May be, there are more than one file in the zip file, for example test1.txt,test2.txt,test3.txt and zip file name is zipexample.zip. With adapter parameters it is possible to use the name of the zip file, but I've no idea to get the origin filenames (test1.txt, ...).
I don't want to use the OS Commands to do this.
I know that's not realy an workitem for PI.
Is there anyone, who has an idea. Thanks
    Kind regards - Jochen

  • Star Office files as attachments treated as "zipped"

I just finally got around to upgrading my wife's iMac to Tiger - and it seems to have created a problem...
She does some work for folks who use Star Office, and frequenty gets Star Office files as attachments. Under Panther, this was no problem - the files arrived as Star Office documents which she could click on to open in NeoOffice; however, with Tiger it seems that Mail is interpreting the .sxw extension as a "zipped" file, causing problems opening the documents from within Mail. Files sent to her as .swx files are showing in Mail as .swx.zip in the body of the email, and just as .swx in the attachments list. Whether she clicks on the Star Office attachment in the email body, or from the attachments list, Mail gives a warning that the file appears to be a zip file and could contain an application.
If she clicks "ok" on the warning, the file will usually open in NeoOffice as before -- but this is still bugging her (and therefore comes back to me). The worse part is that it seems that when she sends .sxw files, the people receiving them are now having problems.
Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to fix this? Or could this be a new "bug" introduced in Tiger's Mail?

Unfortunately, that does not resolve the problem. The Star Office files open fine in NeoOffice if she first saves it somewhere rather than trying to open it from within Mail.
I have done some more testing and discovered that it is definitely a Mail related problem... I had her send me a .swx file, and in Mail I had the same problem as she's having. Got the warning message about it being a zipped file, etc. (actually, if you click it from within the body of the email, after clicking "ok" to the warning it appears that BOMArchiver - or whatever the built-in zip utility is - tries to unzip it).
I then tried using Thunderbird to receive the mail with the .swx attachment. No problems there at all -- it did not appear as a .zip file, and there were no warnings.
So, I've concluded that it has something to do with Mail - and it's a new problem with Tiger, she never had the problem in Panther.

  • Want to partly unzip a zip file

I'm trying to upgrade a BIllion 7404 gateway. The relevant firmware is at the top of the list here:
    http://au.billion.com/support/bipac7404vgpm.php
If my understanding is correct the zip file for the firmware upgrade contains a file within it, a .afw file, that will upgrade the firmware on the Billion. However, when I double click on the zip file, Stuffit unzips the whole lot and I end up with 29 separate files that make up the .afw file, whereas I need the .afw file intact.
If I put the zip file, call it Upgrade.zip, onto a disk called G5-Data (the name I have given the internal drive on my G5), and use the Terminal command unzip, can anyone tell me the exact command I would need to type in to get a hold of the unzipped .afw file that resides within the zip file?
Thanks in advance for an suggestions.

    Hi Cole,
I don't really understand how I got the file, but I got it. The file that I wanted itself contains 29 files that you are not supposed to see. When it is unzipped on a PC, the unzip process stops at the first layer, and that file is recognizable by the gateway as a firmware upgrade file. But if you give the gateway the folder with the 29 files it doesn't know what it is.
Stuffit reaches into the second layer and unpacks the lot into a folder of 29 files. Must be something in the zip file that is incorrectly setup that allows Stuffit to do that.
Anyway, I tried the command I posted and up came one file. I found a program called BetterZip that also unzips the file correctly. Maybe there is something wrong with Stuffit 10 and I should give it the boot. Do you know anything about that?
    Thanks again for your help,
    Guy
