[done] Alternative to compiz (unusual "tiling compiz" setup)

Compiz isn't doing so well...hasn't been for a while... and I wonder what I'm going to do when it will get too hard to keep working on my machine... guess my way of working with compiz is rather far away from the standard... is there another window manager around that can be set up to work (almost) like what I'm used to?
Most important feature for me include but are not limited to:
- The grid plugin. I mostly use compiz as a tiling window manager, without window decorations. The easy & fast "num pad / 3 available sizes toggle, 9 center points" is ideal for me.
- Desktop Plane / Expo on a mouse button: I use this to drag windows around. Also to drag them to the desktop I want them on. Also to get a quick overview of what's happening on the other desktops... like keeping an eye on resync while I watch a video fullscreen.
- Fish Eye / Magnifier / mousewheel on top screen edge: If have this set up to work with screen edge instead of keyboard keys, because usually when I need it I don't have my keyboard with me. I tend to walk around with my mouse a lot and that's when I want quick & easy access to the magnifier / fish eye.
- Setting rules for windows. Mostly for window decorations: I only want those on "temporary / floating / popup" sort of windows... the rest is tiled neatly anyway.
- Scale plugin on a mouse button. So I can easily switch between windows that are on different desktops. Also as I don't have window decoration for most programs, I use it to close programs.
- widget layer: I like conky. And I like a panel (when I don't have my keyboard with me). Just don't want to see it always.
So... if you use a (sort of) similar setup / "workflow" but another window manager - let me know which one please, thanks!

DE Base... like: compiz + xfce4session + a little bit of lxde = does everything I want. Has been great for years... just it's starting to look like it won't be working much longer. Compiz is hardest to replace I guess, the rest that's missin whould be easy once I found something that has the freatures described above.
Hard to describe that fish-eye-thing better than in the first post... hmm....  if I have some sort of fish eye where I can bind the mouse wheel at screen edges to zoom in + zoom out... then I can... more easily do anything I can do without a keyboard from afar? Read, click buttons, change desktop, drag files into windows... with a quick mousewheel stroke that zooms into "fisheye mode" it's a lot easier than with a normal magnifier to do things from afar, especially with a smooth / pseydo-steppless zoom. Haven't looked at gnome + kde for too long, but what I saw available there looked like just a normal magnifier which has to be started and then it's always open with a square "window".
Also there I saw no way to specify which windows are supposed to have decorations and which ones not.
( And I don't have to tile windows without a keyboard, because I only very rarely need new ones - everything stays open and I can easily switch around with scale or expo plugin.)

  • X230 battery not discharging

    Hi,
I have a problem with battery on my 1 year old X230 (currently on Windows 8.1). My battery is behaving weird lately. Once it is fully charged, it stays at 100% for let's say 3-4 hours and after that it'll go to zero really quickly. What can I do to fix that?
Additionally, my fingerprint sensor just stopped working a few months ago. Just like that. Thinkvantage fingerprint sensor cannot detect it anymore. What can cause that?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
unfortunately Lenovo doesn't offer Power Manager application for win8 as well the OS doesn't allow to check out battery settings we need using built-in tools.
Perhaps installation of Power Manager for win7 in compatibility mode will show you the battery statistics. I mean a cycle count. This one of the key statistic parameters.
    What to do?
    1. Perform a battery reset. No problem in win7 but even in compatibility mode PM might not allow to do that. But I didn't check.
    2. As the win8 keeps the battery fully charged all the time, it decreases the battery healthy. Solution is to set the battery charge threshold. Again, it's possible but not in PM under win8. Only 3rd party tools do that. Also there are tons attempts to change the registry settings for that purpose here on forum but I can't confirm a success.
Regarding the FPR if you don't see anything unusual in BIOS Setup and Device Manager solution is standard - remove and reinstall FPR sw. If that will not resolve an issue disassemble keyboard and palmrest and check out ribbon cable from FPR and its connect to the systemboard.

  • Desktop/software recommendations for Compiz user?

    Hi all,
I initially came over to Arch from Ubuntu+Compiz, so of course Gnome+Compiz was a natural fit for me. Have tried KDE a few times, up to 4.2 even, but never really got the hang of it.
The more I think about it, however, the more I realize that I probably don't really need Gnome, as most of the functionality I need is Compiz-related. I do use a lot of the default Gnome apps, however, as well as the panel (purely for displaying an easy-to-click calendar), but primarily do my launching from Alt-F2 or Gnome-do, whichever comes to mind first. I do find the list of applications helpful, however, since sometimes the name of the application or launcher just slips my mind.
So, I'm asking for recommendations on how best to proceed. Stay the same (compiz+gnome)? Get rid of gnome, keeping only apps I need (compiz standalone)? Get another desktop with compiz? Get rid of compiz altogether (difficult...)?
Basically, this is what I use/need from compiz...
    1. Cube (negotiable) - seems the most natural representation of my multiple workspaces. Hasn't seen much use recently though, due to....
    2. THE SCALE PLUGIN - this has GOT to be my favourite compiz plugin, use it all the time to see what I have running currently and quickly switch windows. Alt-tab is SERIOUSLY underused on my setup.
    3. Desktop zoom - I sit pretty far away from my screens, and for detail work I like to zoom the entire desktop in with a simple <Super>mouse-scroll.
    4. Adjustable Window transparency - I use this for image comparisons, or just to read something while typing it into the terminal/text editor/whatever.
Other desktop-related apps I have running are cairo-dock (originally meant it as a gnome-panel replacement, but didn't like the calendar implementation. Launch frequently-used apps from it though), Gnome-do (no explanation needed), and the requisite conky. I'm not actually sure whether cairo-dock has any gnome dependencies for operation... if so please let me know. I guess I could do without cairo-dock, at least, since its just a convenient store for all my launchers, at least till gnome-do goes multi-monitor (separate X) capable.
So, on to my frequently-used apps, related to Gnome.
    1. Evolution - I was a Thunderbird user in Windows and Ubuntu, but Evo was just quite nicely integrated to the whole Gnome environment, like the calendar and stuff, unlike the cool-but-feels-a-bit-hackish Lightning plugin for Thunderbird (I haven't tried v3 with integration though). This is pretty essential now as the only means of downloading my Microsoft Exchange mail at work.
    2. Firefox - More gtk than Gnome, just thought I'd throw it out. Don't think this will be a problem in any case.
    3. Nautilus - I understand this is tightly integrated to Gnome. Have tried PCManFM, Thunar, and EmelFM2, with the last one being the best in my opinion, but always came back to Nautilus, just like the interface (wish for dual-pane though). I guess this could be adjusted pretty easily.
So, any suggestions? I know most here have the opinion that everything eventually ends with tiling WMs, but that's a bit scary for me, plus I'm not sure if desktop zoom and adjustable transparency are achievable (especially for one-on-top-of-the-other comparison of images, as I do image-related research, and that's the fastest way to confirm the accuracy of my results). I do realize, however, that my love of the Scale plugin can be seen as a stopgap because I don't use a REAL tiling WM... Suggestions welcome, and sorry for the extra-long post.

Well, seeing as compiz is a WM any of the other WMs are out. Essentially then, you're left with KDE + Compiz, standalone or one of the lighter DEs.
If you're not a fan of KDE (same here, I try it every two point releases, but I can never get used to how it does things) then the first option is pretty much out. That and I'm sure the KDE team isn't focusing much on compiz integration, what with their own effects.
Standalone works (with a bit of effort for start-up scripts etc). However, you may miss some of the little DE additions you don't notice until they're gone (like copy&paste that keeps the data even after the app you copied from has closed).
I'd say you should look into XFCE or LXDE. My suggestion is XFCE. It's pretty much GNOME-lite. Similar panel, similar settings, similar little extras like a settings daemon.
As for the apps - I've never had any problems running GNOME apps in it (though the libraries add to the RAM usage), it uses GTK+ anyway, and some of the XFCE apps are really great (Mousepad is a great little text editor if you just want to jot down some stuff and Thunar is stable and fast).
Firefox will only ever have problems if you're running it in KDE, and that's just appearance-based stuff.
The scale plugin - Awesome has a project called Revelation that I believe implements this. Compiz is your best bet here, though.
    Hope this helps.

  • Clipped screen on dual screen+compiz+nvidia

    Hello everybody,
I am connecting an external display to my laptop. The laptop display is 1280x800, while the external display is 1280x1024.
NVIDIA is configured to run two separate Xscreens, opposed to the TwinView alternative.
Compiz works on either screens without slowdowns, but the lower area of the external display is black.
It seems that Compiz is running on each screen at 1280x800, and since the external display is larger, a black band is shown at the bottom. How do I configure Compiz to use the full resolution on the external display?
Metacity isn't affected by this issue.
Did you ever experience that? There's not much on Google about that (or too much, searching for compiz+nvidia+dual screen gives too much results )
Forgot to say: this applies to Compiz 0.7.8 and Compiz 0.8.0 upgraded today. Affects Ubuntu and Arch either using NVIDIA 177.x or 180.x.
    Cheers,
    eaZy

I still haven't found a solution, but I managed to work with Compiz on the main screen (in my case the laptop) and Metacity on the other screen...
    I'm starting compiz with
    DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace --only-current-screen
    and metacity with
    DISPLAY=:0.1 metacity --replace
This is working, apart of small focus bugs: changing from an active window on a screen to an active window to another screen is impossible, the only solution is clicking on a unfocused object and returning the focus to the target window.
That's actually the work around I was looking for! Thanks a lot. I'm using a 26" tv as the secondary display and compiz is kind of pointless on that, at least to me. For some odd reason I've also noticed that when I set the larger display to a resolution lower than the main display (the laptop lcd), there is no bar with compiz. I don't know how solid this is because after a few restarts it went back to the intended resolution, but since doing the same step again it's been working for now.
    To illustrate what I mean:

    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"

    Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: 1280x800_60 +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    # Removed Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: 1280x800_60 +0+0"
    Identifier "Screen1"
    Device "Device1"
    Monitor "Monitor1"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "metamodes" "DFP-1: 1280x720 +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"

  • [FIXED] Compiz runs only with emerald and crashes with metacity

    Hey,
I currently try to use a metacity theme and have compiz enabled but apparently that's something compiz doesn't really like.
One think i noticed in fusion-icon is that the entire metacity option under: "Select Window Devorator" is just not there.. (or was that always the case?)
Oke, things i have done so far:
    - Search this forum (obviously) nothing found with a solution
    - Searched the wiki (same results)
    - in gconf-editor /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager set to compiz (like said in the Compiz wiki page on archlinux.org
    - disabled metacity as compositing manager (tried with enabled as well but the same results)
    - right now i have the compiz bash script from ubuntu (tweaked a little) and that starts up compiz just fine but not with metacity
And incase you want the script:

Wait, what, I thought metacity isn't as window decorator, it is a window manager, right? I don't really get what you're trying to do... maybe install compiz-decorator-gtk and use it instead of emerald?
edit: aaah, yes, I think you're missing compiz-decorator-gtk, try that, look at fusion icon "window decorator" option again.
Strange.. i was under the impression that pacman -S compiz-fusion would install GTK and QT decorators... guess not.
This issue is fixed now. Running metacity decorations now WITH compiz.

  • Compiz 8.9 vs Compiz 9.X

I decided I wanted to try compiz for a highly customizable window manager with advanced compositing (over Openbox with Compton which I have so far used, any recommendations are of course welcome)
I noticed on the wiki that there are installation instructions for compiz 8.9 and compiz 9.x, and I noticed that 9.x seems to have most of the plugins and utilities all merged together into one neat little package, whereas 8.9 seems tot have it all in pieces.
From this I can deduce that Compiz 8.9 is a bit more modular as in minimalist friendly, so that users can avoid installing features they don't really need. In my case though I don't think that would be worth it over a feature complete up to date version. But I was wondering if there is anything more to it (for example are the differences more like between enlightenment 16 and enlightenment 17, where the two can't even be compared, and are being separately maintained)
I tried googling this up but I didn't really find any topic discussing the differences, is what I just said above really all there is to it? or is there something I'm missing?

Compiz was always split up into smaller packages because there were some features that always worked, others that worked most of the time, a couple that might work and other plug-ins which should work in theory (but no-one had time because they were unofficial plug-ins).
With the 0.9 series, Canonical (I think it is) decided to restructure Compiz, chose the features it wanted and left the others behind, so it doesn't contain as much as 0.8 did.

As I said above, Canonical decided to restructure Compiz, mainly for Unity. Beyond that, I haven't a clue because I don't use Compiz 0.9.

  • Compiz in Unstable

Since beryl project is becaming a confuse-chaotic project, where all plugins are added without a think on usability i'd like to use compiz, which from the last cvs support directly metacity themes.
Can it be packaged? (David reveneman >> Quinnstorm bugs)

The liberal open community-based development model is the thing I really _LOVE_ about Beryl and this is also why I don't like Compiz (I hate "one-man-show" development). Only after Beryl came up, David Reveman (Compiz developer) really started to communicate with community more actively. He were communicative as an oyster and now he is complaining that people behind Beryl never really tried to work with him. He is serious hypocrite.
Btw. I really like features in Beryl. And I am happy that Beryl developers doesn't like "GUI fascist" development approach like GNOME developers does. Well, I am KDE user, I generally really like a lot of features and configurability. Call me feature freak if you want, I am proud of it! ;-)
EDIT: But of course Compiz can be also added to repos, there is nothing bad about it. To each his own.

The wiki you mentioned is deprecated, I think.

  • Compiz without Emerald [SOLVED]

    Hello
I want to use compiz, but without buggy Emerald decorator (just Metacity).
So, I have installed: compiz-decorator-gtk and fusion-icon packages. And I choose Metacity from context menu of fusion-icon.
Additionaly I've instaled: ccsm package, (to be able to easy chose some window effects) and I've selected some effects from it.
So far so good, but nothing happened.
My question is how to enable window effects (choosen from ccsm, like 'woobly window, minimize effect' and etc.) using Metacity?

You don't. Compiz is a window manager. Metacity is a window manager. If you activate one, the other is deactivated. If emerald is buggy, try gtk-window-decorator, I think (but I'm not sure) it's possible to use Metacity themes with it.
Then there's the possibility of using compiz-0.9.2. Search the forums, there are PKGBUILDs somewhere.
Is that means that I should choose 'Compiz' , not 'Metacity' from the context menu of fusion-icon, and use 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' in the 'Window Decoration' plug-in?

  • Compiz, window position and decoration

    Hi all,
I was kind of "forced" to install Compiz on my XFCE desktop, due to the video playback tearing caused by the buggy Sandy Bridge Linux support.
So, everything runs fine. Except for two things:
1-Window decorations. Is there any way for Compiz to use XFCE window decorations instead of Emerald? I use "gtk-window-decorator", but it weirdly use a WD theme which isn't even the Emerald or the XFCE one.
2-Every window I open goes to the top-left corner of the screen. Is there any way for opening on center, or, even better, on the last position they were? XFCE does this by default.
    Thanks for any help.
    R.

You might try setting compiz to use XFCE decorations in ccsm. Open the Window Decoration plugin and in the "command" field:
    xfwm --replace
If this doesn't work or if windows are still being placed in the corner, you can enable the Place Windows plugin and set placement mode to centered. I don't think compiz can remember the last placement of each window, but I like using Smart placement. You can also go to the Fixed Placement tab and set any windows that you always want placed in a certain location.

  • My ipad2 wants to now setup as new, but it's not new, and asks to restore from icloud or itunes. I don't know what to do

For no known reason, my Ipad 2 crashed. I turned it on one day and it acts like it's new. It says "setup new ipad" or restore using icloud or itunes. I don't know which to do because I don't want to lose what I had on my ipad and I don't know if I had icloud setup or not.

You don't have any choice. You will have to set the iPad up all over again now. Take a guess and pick one or the other and hope. You will be able to download most of your paid content again for free.

  • Zoom function in tiling WMs for the Eee

Looking at getting an Eee PC. A zoom function in the window manager (similar,  but not necessarily as flashy as, Compiz Fusion) would be a must. I'd like to use a tiling WM on it, though. Does anyone know which, if any, tiling WMs have a zoom function, or one can be easily added to them?
    Thanks!

Some tiling WMs allow you to toggle fullscreen on/off for the focused window, in effect zooming in on one window (e.g. stumpWM). Others allow you to change layouts on the fly, and have a one-window-per-screen layout, for the same effect (e.g. wmii, xmonad).
I don't know of a tiling WM that supports zooming similar to compiz's.

  • Setup Problem HP6830 using Hotspot for Printer & Laptop

I have a TMobile Hotspot that gives me internet access for my laptop.I have a HP Officejet Pro that I just got and I'm trying to set it up on the Hotspot network.I've installed (via disk) the HP Software on my Toshiba Coimputer.I've gone through the setup process on the printer and it shows I'm connected to the Hotspot Network. When I try to go through the setup process on the computer it says it can't find that printer.I've checked - over and over again - the IP, and printed everything out (Config Page & Network TestResults) on the Printer, and it indicates everything is OK. My question is - Why can't my computer find the computer (they're both on the same Hotspot Network)?I don't have a USB Cable right now, and I'm trying to set it up wirelessly.  Any suggestion about what I might have missed?  Any help would be appreciated

Hey ,  Welcome to the HP Support Forum.  I understand you're encountering some setup issues when using your HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer with a mobile hot spot.  I would like to assist you with this.   In my experience, mobile hotspots are hit and miss when used to support printers' wireless connections, even when the setup's are completed with diligence and care on the part of the user.  This caveat aside, as there are no official documents from HP on how to troubleshoot this particular issue, I recommend  toggling airplane mode on your T-Mobile device before restoring the hotspot connection.  Try the printer to laptop connection via the software as before, once you've confirmed the laptop's connected to the hotspot.  If this approach falls short, you could try the alternative and HP supported wireless direct setup method.  Here's how: From your printer's front panel touch the Wireless Direct icon ()Turn Wireless Direct OnFrom here you can choose to have it enabled with Security On or Off.  If you turn Security On, make a note of the passcode (it'll come in handy later). To learn how to complete the setup on your computer and any other mobile devices, click here for more instructions. Please let me know the result of your troubleshooting by responding to this post.  If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below and clicking to accept this solution. Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!
