Done With Motion

A recently completed project for a customer, done in Motion and Soundtrack Pro using the sound clip library and some filters.

I especially liked the HUD effect that relates to their near and distance vision lenses. Keyframed in Motion. Some smaller read-outs were left off intentionally. I'm searching for a way to advance a counter (G-Force, Altimiter or Air Speed) based on advancing to the next frame. Currently they change manually every 6 frames or so as needed.
Cheers,
Andrew

  • Still image with motion has flicker pulsating problem

    I use FCP 5.0.4
I have read the many threads about this subject and am still not able to succeed in getting rid of the flicker/pulsating in a still image with motion.
I would say about 25% of the stills with motion have the jitters; all the rest look great.
The first thing I tried was
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Field Shift:none
    as well as
Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter min, med, and max.
Maybe 5% were corrected with this, but the other 20% still had the jitters even after using a combination of the above or by themselves.
I just burned a test DVD using a variety of the persistently jittery stills from my current project and although the jitters change a bit, they were still there so all of these failed:
    1. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Upper (odd)
    2. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter minimal
    3. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter max
    4. Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    5. Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    6. All the tricks together which means
Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace set at Upper (odd)
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Shift Fields: none
    Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
I know this issue has been kicked around a lot and i know some folks are not happy that it has to be kicked around at all. But I am doing something wrong because my DVDs look very un-PRO. Would anyone like to talk me through this nightmare preferably with as many details as possible since I am obviously missing something critical.
    Thanks in advance.

There is no 'secret formula'. It just takes thinking through the issues.
    1. Set the image size for each image that makes sense within the context of your project. Going significantly larger than the displayed area of that image (including movement) is just asking FCP to do additional work to resize the image. FCP is less sophisticated at resizing images than Photoshop. Use Photoshop and your planning of the movie to get the images to the appropriate size.
    2. Wasted effort and totally irrelevant- you could set it to 7200 dpi if it makes you feel better.
    3. Good idea - be sure to knock down areas of pure or very bright white. These are the elements that will give you the most trouble.
    4. Don't do this unless you want to throw away HALF the picture information. Deinterlace deletes half the picture and then photoshop recreates it through interpolation of the remaining half of the picture. Why do this?
    5. Make your determination based on what works. If you have properly exposed and sized the material, the need to blur is greatly reduced. ONLY do it on the images that need it. Why degrade every image if you do not need to do so?
    6. See number 5
    7. Lay out your time line early, view the work on an external broadcast monitor and only mess about with the images that require it.
In the psycho business they have term for much of the referenced post - it's called superstitious behavior. Basically it comes down to "It worked before so we recommend it to everyone without regard to their situation" ... here's another example:
Many years ago in my architecture practice, we had one of the early 512k macs (upgraded from the 128k!) I needed to show one of the interns how to create a project budget spread sheet in Excel. Inadvertently I clicked on Word, said "oops", closed it and opened Excel and we went to work.
A week later I was walking by the computer and overheard the same intern explaining how to work with Excel to another architect. "First you open Word, close it, THEN you open Excel", she explained. When asked by her 'trainee', why do you have to open Word first, wouldn't it just be easier to simply open Excel? Her answer was just perfect, "Well, it works every time, what's wrong with that?" so it goes ...
    good luck with your project.

  • Acquire encoder position with Motion and DAQ

    Hi,
I am trying to acquire an encoder position with Motion. It seems impossible to set the frequency of the acquisition with Motion and I must poll for the position in a do-while loop.
I have read in a lot of threads that one can use RTSI lines to retrieve encoder position with a DAQ Board though it is acquired with a Motion board. But there are no examples at all about this.
To sum up, I need to send Encoder Phase A to RTSI0, Encoder PhaseB to RTSI1 (which I already do), retrieve info with a DAQ device and then calculate rpm.

PS: please don't answer with measure angular position.vi or explain me in what this Vi can help me

    Hi Christophe,
I'm not sure I understood well what you need. You have the angular position and you need to know the timing, am I right? Can you use an other counter on your card to get the period (or the frequency) of your signal? From that, I think you should be able to calculate the velocity.
    I hope this helps,

  • Advice with Motion presets

    Hey guys,
I'm working with Motion to do a 3 minute slideshow and I'd love to get some advice on the project setup and exports. What's the best setting for Motion if this slideshow's going to be displayed on a toshiba projector? You can find a link with the specs below, but i'm wondering how best to set this up for the best output quality... how should I export this when I'm done? Do I need to get involved with FCP? Thanks in advance...

  • Frustrated with Motion's instability

I am pretty frustrated with Motion right about now. I understand it has some powerful capabilities (of which currently fulfill all my needs) and is in a relatively infantile state, however.... it is completely useless if it can't do what it should do because of poor performance and bugs. I am glad I'm not importing anything from Motion to FCP because judging from this board, that's a whole other pandora's box of eggshells.
I've read posts here of Motion crashing due to 10.4.3, Decklink desktop settings, ANY image filters, font issues, QT version issues, projects too big, etc... I started off pretty good, but as my project has grown during production, Motion has gotten shakier and shakier. Constant beach balls, random non-responsiveness, crashing with no rhyme or consistent cause... you name it. How can Apple call this a "Pro" app?! I read a post stating that Motion is not meant for anything larger than a few second effect or lower-third graphic... what the **** good is that?
I've tried removing my duplicate fonts, I don't have a decklink card, I deleted preferences, I repaired permissions, I installed (and reinstalled) updates, I changed export settings many times, I am even forced to disable image filters when I'll be working on that section because if that filtered image has to be drawn for the screen, Motion crashes. This is insane. I can't even tell you how many folks have written on here how Motion's problems seriously crimped their tight work deadlines. I'm in the same boat. And quite frankly, I'm very concerned that this project won't get built and rendered in time because of Motion's instability.
I'm beginning to wonder if I should have went with AE instead. This project isn't that hard. If Motion can't handle a 1 minute piece, with 2 short movie clips, and no audio... what can it handle?!
    -J

    Heya Justin,
Motion has its strengths and weaknesses, but as a motion graphics artist and/or compositor, you'll want to have a few tools in your arsenal. Motion, for example, plays fairly well with AE. You can open Motion projects as QT movies in AE and see automatic updates when you make changes to the projects (in Motion).
Combustion is a great tool, as Patrick pointed out. It has a somewhat long story behind it, but it is considered a direct competitor to AE. Among its strengths: a superior (to AE) 3D implementation, decent particles, awesome keyer, awesome tracker and more.
Nowadays, picking a tool means picking a community. AE has been around for more than a decade and has a userbase in the hundreds of thousands, so there are a lot of resources out there. It's also a bit long in the tooth, on the downward curve of its product lifecycle. Combustion has a much smaller community and Discreet has been slightly fickle about developing it. For a while, it was a major focus for the company, then it went into limbo, then it came back.
Regardless of all that, try familiarizing yourself with some of the other tools on the market. You really can only appreciate each one until you've tried another. And don't be discouraged: time and technology (things get more powerful and ever-cheaper) are on your side.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with Motion title

I am trying to create a title using one of Motion's pre-made template's but every time I try to import the picture it does not fit the drop zone and I can't resize it or anything. I am very new to Final Cut Studio, I worked with Final Cut Pro a while back but I have not done a whole lot with Motion. I am trying to create some good looking titles for a fitness company that hired me, but I have not had so much luck. If anyone could give me a link to some good tutorials or has some good advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Not sure which template you're using, but there is a Fit parameter with drop zones. Select the drop zone and click on the Image tab in the Inspector. Under the Fit parameter, make sure it says, "Fit" and not Center or Stretch.

  • Compositing with Motion

Hi, has anyone done multiple layers compositing using Motion before(more than 10 layers, each with lots of nesting objects). The problem I face is after awhile(a few minutes to be exact), Motion becomes extremely sluggish, I cannot add/duplicate layers, my videos become distorted and occationally the program will just quit by itself.
I am using dual 2.7GHz, 4.5Gb ram, X800 XT, Fibre Channel HD
The items I have in the project are:
    - cg background video
    - life plate(chroma keyed)
    - shadow generated using the life plate
    - light wraps (manually created using lots of layers)
    - simulated lights effect
    - other foreground CG elements(alpha channel video)
    My videos are 10bit uncompressed.
I know Motion is not exactly a compositing software, but it is much easier to execute compare to other compositing software and Motion is what I have for now.
Any suggestion on whether should I stick with Motion or move on to Shake instead? Thanks in advance.
    jovan

    Hey Jovan,
Try clearing your RAM every so often. As soon as you hit play, Motion begins to fill your RAM.
Run your activity monitor in Utilities, clear your RAM, and then hit play in Motion and see how much playback you get before your RAM is full. If you clear your RAM before it gets full, that should clear up your problems. It did mine. It is kind of a pain to have to navigate through a drop down menu to clear the RAM as often as you might need to. A key command to clear the RAM would be most helpful.
I have to give Patrick the credit for this work around. He's the one that suggested I check out the activity monitor.
    Hope this helps.

  • Endless beach Ball. Impossible to work with Motion.

Impossible to work with Motion since I have my new Apple 23" Cinema display, I did the quick time stand alone thing, got rid of the .plist and just do not know where to go from there. Any suggestion would be appreciated

At this stage, if the whole machine is slowing down I'd suspect a disk or memory problem.
    Try the following few things.
    1. Run the 'Disk Utility', select each volume in turn and click 'verify volume' for each one.
    2. Run the 'Disk Utility', select each volume in turn and click 'verify disk permissions' for each one.
None of the above are destructive, ie they only check for problems, not fix them. Each has a counterpart 'Repiar Volume' and 'Repair permission' which do attempt to fix problems. Use with caution. They are normally very safe to use, and don't normally result in data loss, but I'd be a fool not to say "ensure you have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose."
Finally, just in case something shook loose when you attached the new display, click the Apple menu, select 'About this Mac' and 'More info...' and check that the profile shown matches your expectations in terms of the amount of memory fitted etc etc.
Of course, all of the above may be a little overkill if it's just some weird problem related to the new display, so before doing any of that, put the old display back on and see if the problem goes away.

  • What happened to Final Cut's integration with Motion??  Renders are hosed..

So is it just me? I have a HUGE project (1.5 hour bio/documentary) that is crashing Final Cut every time it tries to render or export. I was getting an error that said the crash could have been possible to a "ProGraphics plug-in." I can't locate any plug-in anywhere on any drive that's associated with "ProGraphics" at all. From what I gather it's something to do with Motion integration, causing problems with renders. Basically, I've used many Motion effects within my Final Cut sequences. They're nested everywhere, and were rendering just fine a few days ago (although I was still having issues with exporting). So basically I either need to wait for a fix, or go back and re-cut without the Motion graphics. Uggh. Disgusted and in need of a patch (or a drink).
My versions of all software are current, as is my operating system. I've done all updates and patches (I'm a versiontracker geek so I keep up with this stuff). I've deleted preferences, dumped all render files (that's when I figured out the rendering issues with Motion), rebuilt permissions, created a clean User Account, etc. I've done hardware tests on the drives and RAM. I'm out of options.
Can anyone from Apple confirm that there are indeed issues with this, just to reassure me that I'm not going insane?
    Thanks.

Try searching the forums for that ProGraphics term., might find something that helps.
Chances are you lost or damaged a system-level hook in one of your recent efforts to stay up to date. Most of us would not update QT or the pro apps until big projects are out the door or securely backed up. We often print to tape or export a completely flattened movie before running major upgrades to the Mac OS.
However, I just popped open an old FCP project that has some Motion work in it from about 8 months ago. Everything hooked right up and some tests rendered okay.
Huge projects with delicately nested elements need careful workflow decisions. I try to pre-render or use proxies where ever possible. Hard lessons learned over a decode of After Effects work. Hope you get better advice but searching for the ProGraphics error term will get you results faster.

  • Help With Motion to Vacate

I have satisfied one of the two judgments on my credit report with Schewels Furniture Company. I have been trying to find an example online with how to fill out the Motion to Vacate form for Virginia and haven't had any luck. I called the credit manager today, asked if she could do that for me, but, she said that was up to me to file. So, I downloaded the form from the courts website for VA and have filled in some of it. There is a section for the plaintiff and defendant. Since I am the one filing, am I the plaintiff? I can't afford an attorney and wish I had something to look at to see how it's filled out. I'm worried I'll make a mistake. I thought about asking their attorney, but, they didn't use one. She just filed the judgment herself. Thank You

Well, here is how my trip to the courthouse went, yesterday, when I attempted to file my Motion to Vacate form in Virginia. On the way down, and while filling out the form at home, I worried about numerous things that could go wrong, but, the one thing that did go wrong never entered my mind. I approach the clerk's window and she gets up from her desk to come over and ask if she can help me.  First, I ask and pay for a copy of the original judgment so I can make sure that I have the plaintiff's address written correctly on my Motion form. Then, after I'm done with that, I tell her that I would like to file my Motion to Vacate and ask how much is the filing fee.  She doesn't know, so, she takes my form and goes to talk to two of the other clerks at their desks in the back of the room. She comes back and says there isn't a fee to file. I thank her and say I'd like to go ahead and file the form please. I can see a look of confusion coming over her as she slides my form back to me and says...'I'm only trying to help, but, I believe that this type of form is for the plaintiffs to file...not the defendant. Maybe you should contact an attorney and ask for their counsil on this.' I explain that I cannot afford an attorney, however, in my research, I discovered that I can file this Motion asking the judge to vacate, or remove, the judgment from my credit report. I told her that I had asked the plaintiff, Schewels Furniture, if they would do this and their response was that I had to file this form; they had done their part by sending the Satisfaction of Judgment notice to her office. So, it goes back and forth like this for several minutes, and in the end, she simply will not take the form because she believes I would be wasting my money(she found out that it's $12 to file), that the Satisfaction of Judgment is all I need for removal of said judgment on my credit report(I told her that Experian needs the Motion to Vacate signed by the judge), and says again that I need to speak to an attorney. I know she was trying to help me. I'm just frustrated.  I'm going to call around anyway to see if I have filled out the plaintiff vs defendant part correctly as that was what she was stuck on in her reasoning. Because I had Schewels Furniture in the plaintiff spot, she thought it was wrong. And, how was y'all's day yesterday? Lol.

  • New card that works with motion 2?

I tried to install FCP studio in a Power mac G4(firewire 800) but couldn't install Motion cause the graphic card doesn't support it. I need to know what card can I install in order to use motion 2, any sugestions? I dont need anything expensive just one that works well with motion. My mac now uses a GE Force 4MX 64 mb.

I don't know anyone selling new cards for this system, here's some on eBay.
Check for compatibility with your specific system...

  • Does Qmaster come with Motion? - Compressor does.

    Hi,
I've been using Compressor 2 with Motion 2, works great. I want to set up Qmaster but I can't seem to find the AppleQmasterNode.mpkg package. I saw a bunch of other Qmaster packages, and installed them, but I can't get the control panel to show up in my system prefs, which would confirm I've done the setup correctly.
    Advice would be appreciated.
    John

That I'm aware of Motion doesn't doesn't come with Qmaster in that sense. However, if you have if you have Final Cut, it will come with Qmaster which you can then set up and compressor will use Qmaster. But if it doesn't show up in your system preferences then it wasn't installed and you would need to purchase Final Cut.
