Hello everybody,
I just recently purchased a new MPB Core Duo 2 and upgraded to the newest version of Logic Pro.
I find that my dongle usually does not get recognized when I plug it into the usb on the right-hand side of the mac however it gets recognized every time when I plug it into the usb port on the left hand side.
Has anybody else experienced this? Also I have tried to plug into the usb on the right hand side...jump drives, hard-drives, etc..and they all get recognized right off the bat...so I don't think that the actual USB port is defective.
Any ideas why this might be happening? I also tried updating the firmware on the usb key (dongle) and it said that the key is fine and does not require an update.

OS X Reinstall DVD rejected by MBP Core Duo

I am attempting to reinstall Mac OS X on my 15.4" MBP Core Duo. When I install the 1st disk while the OS is up, the system will eject the DVD after about 1 minute. It does recognize the 2nd disk, but not the first disk. There are no blemishes on the disk, it has been used once before. I have noticed that the DVD player on my MBP will randomly not recognize movie DVD's, and eject them after they are put in. These movie DVD's are original/new out of the box, and work in any other system.
Is there a firmware issue, or a known issue with the super dvd players in the 15.4" Mac Book Pro's?
I apologize ahead of time if this is addressed elsewhere, I looked for a few hours and didnt find what I was looking for.

Random Shutdowns on a MBP Core Duo, Suggestions/Help would be great

I've had two random shutdowns of my mac since purchasing it back in August. The first happened on January 11th, when it said it was at 11-12% power. The second happened about two weeks later, at 23% power. I've been looking around these forums and other pages, and haven't really found anything that has helped so far.
Details of the first crash:
Open apps- Firefox (5 windows, two had about 20+ tabs open, the rest were single page, and yes, I know it crashes often with that many), Camino (1 window with 5 tabs), and Word 2004, as well as Quicktime open to the iPhone stream.
I had an USB key plugged in, to which I was saving my Word document.
So I was working in Word while in front of the TV and during an interesting bit, didn't do anything for a minute. So, like the many times earlier, it slept the display to conserve power (in "Better Energy Savings" mode). I moved my finger on the trackpad to wake it back up, and it turned back on the backlighting, and then stopped. I thought it had just went back to sleep, but after a few key presses and a check of the light that usually pulsates when it's sleeping (plus the USB key , I found out that the computer had turned off. I let it sit for a while, and when I plugged it back into AC power and turned it on, with my USB key still plugged in, and although it booted to my desktop, the Finder never started (so no desktop icons for anything), unplugging the USB key fixed this and everything returned to normal. I then installed the only update I was missing, one for iChat, restarted, and continued working.
In the second incident, I only had my browsers open, nothing external plugged in, and my displayed was dimmed to the third darkest level. When it was at about 23% power, it once again randomly shut down. This time, I attempted to turn it back on, and nothing happened. After plugging it into AC power, it turned on and once logged in showed a very low (2-6%) power, so I guess it was reporting the power incorrectly?
Anyways, went back to look at the battery exchange on Apple's website. I had checked before when they started it, and was pretty sure mine wasn't covered, and a second check confirmed that. My Mac's serial is W8618091VWX, which isn't covered by the recall.
So, I have a few questions:
1. Is there a toll-free number I can phone Apple (Canada) at? The only number I've found seems to be only free for those who bought their computer in the last 90 days, which I'm no longer covered by, and haven't been for a while. Talking to someone at Apple would be good.
2. Otherwise, if I took my computer to an Authorized Service Provider, would they be able to take a look at it and answer some questions? I bought my MBP at a London Drugs and they aren't service providers, so how much would it cost to do this?
3. Is there a definite cause for these random shutdowns? It seems to vary among other people, so it would be helpful if I could try something to eliminate one of the causes.
4. Does Tiger report battery levels pretty accurately? In the past when I reached 6% I got a warning and was able to plug it into AC power and had no problems.

Macbook Pro 2.16 GHZ Core Duo, 15.4", 1GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had this problem of RSD fixed for a while after having had the battery replaced by Apple, till yesterday, when the MBP suddenly experienced a shutdown during a meeting presentation, while it was connected to the AC power. At the first restart, as coming back from a stop-mode, for a while appeared a warning of low-battery level, with battery level indicator flashing red and showing the empty icon but with a 86% of charge level and a new shut-down definitely put the MBP out of service, no way to have it functioning again. Obviously, AC power was OK, no problem with the microphone or the projector ( I was at the podium of an international meeting) and a lucky precaution ( double save of the same presentation on a friend's twin MBP, that worked correctly) saved the job.
Then, a couple of hour later, my MBP started up normally and everything works fine, with or without MAGsafe connected to AC power, almost up to now.
I've read the post with a link to the procedure for resetting the power controller chip on the mainboard, I'll do it in a minute, hoping that this will help.
Any further suggestion?

A "stock" way to get 802.11n on MBP Core Duo?

Is there anyway to get something to upgrade my Core Duo MBP to 802.11n without using an external card or anything like that. I can handle working on the software side of things but not the hardware. Is there anyone that i can send it to to have them to the upgrade for me? Thanks a lot.

Hi, I'm an old Navy retired electronics technician and have been working on Macs since 1986 and am in the same boat as you. I have a 15" MBP that I have already taken apart once to install a larger Hard Drive and Williams procedure doesn't look all that more difficult. I have the card on order from Powermax and I expect to install it by the end of this week. If it works out for me and testing shows it works consistantly and if you are willing to trust me with your "baby" for the time it takes to install it and ship it back I would be glad to do the same for your machine for a small fee. Overheating MBP Core Duo

Folks,
I know that the original Core Duo MBP's like mine ran hot. I'm accustomed to that. My MBP typically idled at about 46*C to 56*C. I had a problem about 2 years ago where it would spike to 80*C+ & it was suggested to me that I disable Spotlight. I did so & thereafter the only time it ran in the upper 70's to low 80's was when I was doing heavy calculating, like ripping movies.
However, lately it has been climbing into the low 80's for no apparent reason. Whereas, in XP in runs in the 40's to 50's.
I updated to 10.6.3 in the lame hope that it might have some moderating effect, but no.
Can anyone offer an explanation? I'm sure that letting this machine operate at these temps for an extended period will do it no good.

Yes! I checked the ActMon & one app was taking up way too much CPU usage. I didn't recognize the acronym so I Googled it.
Turns out it was iAntivirus. Once I disabled it my CPU temp dropped immediately to the high 40's *C. 45*C at the moment.
So, I did a little research & it seems many others have had the same complaint. I uninstalled iAv, installed ClamXAv & all seems fine now.
Oh, and just as an aside...the MBP sits on an aluminum/plastic cooling pad with its own fans & I keep it (the MBP) spotless & dust free; outside and in.

Question: I want to update to the new LION OSX, but it says that I need to at least have an Intel Core 2 Duo. When I click "about this Mac," it says that I have a 2.16 Intel Core Duo. Is there a difference between the "Core 2 Duo" and the "Core Duo"?

Well, my title basically asks the question that I am seeking an answer for. Im not sure what year my MB Pro is, and I cant exactly find it on the Apple site. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. All I see (dating back to 2007,) is Intel Core 2 Duo on the apple site. Im pretty sure (but not 100% positive,) that my MB Pro is a late 2008/early 2009. Just trying to figure out if I can install LION OSX or not, since it requires atleast intel core 2 duo, and mine says I only have the intel core duo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

External Hard Drive and iMac Core Duo

I purchased a new iMac Core Duo and also have a iMac G4.
I transferred my data from the old computer to the Core Duo with no problems. I have a Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive on the old mac. Everything transferred well including the external hard drive.... everything worked well until yesterday. Something happened, I don't know what. The Core Duo no longer recognizes my external drive, and I can't reload it. I tried to migrate all of my files from the old mac to the new, But that doesn't work anymore either. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have an awful lot of data that I really would like to have again on the new Core Duo.

I think my new iMac just fried my external Lacie d2. I kept my iphoto library on the d2 and was working in iphoto and suddenly photos started disappearing. When I rebooted, the drive was fried. Disk Utility couldn't repair it.

Logic Pro X compatibility with mbox 2 mini and 2009 core duo macbook

I currently have Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 and an Mbox2 Mini, both of which amazingly still work on Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I'm interested in learning Logic and am trying to confirm compatitility with the Mbox2 Mini on a first generation core duo Aluminum Macbook (2.4 Ghz) running 4gb of RAM. The system requirements just say 10.8.4 or later with a 64 bit processor. The Macbook runs fine, and I primarily just record stereo piano tracks, so it's not like I'm going to have 16 tracks running on it. Anyone using an Mbox2 Mini, and any issues with the hardware?

It's not an external device's compatibility with LPX that matters...
It's your external hardware's compatibility with whatever OS X version you are using to run LPX in.... that is important.
Im guessing you upgraded OS X about the same time you switched to LPX?

Note: Why is it showing Duet and not Quartet briefly? Are you sure you installed the correct drivers or did you, at one time have a Duet?
Additional: You might want to try this.. though I doubt it will fix things... but this can cure all kinds of weird issues...
Delete both the main plist and the CS file...
Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
Quit Logic Pro
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
Restart the computer.
Note: if you cannot find either of these files you didn't follow the instructions exactly as described

What's the difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo

I recently bought a new Macbook (Original) with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
I gave my old one to my younger cousin. It has just an Intel Core Duo processor.
What does that "2" mean?
Does it mean the processor is faster?
I was guessing it means that I can have more RAM (because this can hold 4 GB instead of 2 GB, like my previous Macbook)...
Both these Macbooks have only 1 GB of RAM, yet the new one seems MUCH faster. The only real difference in technical specs is the processor. Could the processor be responsible for the much faster computer, or is it simply because it's a new computer?

Part of that has to do with the chipsets, although I've heard that some of the Intel chipsets work with both the Core Duo and the earlier Core 2 Duo.

Nikon Coolscan V ED and iMac Core Duo

Anybody using their Coolscan V ED, or another film or flatbed scanner, with the new iMac Core Duo? I plan purchasing the CS V ED in the very near future, but unsure whether it will work well with the new iMac.

It's already been four months of new Intel Macs, I'd expect Nikon to have at least some small idea of how much longer would before the Mac platform is again supported?
What's even more disturbing is that I only stumbled upon this issue by browsing this support forum. I was on the verge of purchasing at least four and possibly up to eight scanners and corresponding computers. That would have been a financial disaster for my company considering the lack of support and the seeming lack of concern by Nikon regarding the new Mac computers.
NOWHERE in your sales literature or the Nikon Coolscan website does it say that Macs with Intel processors are not supported. The sales literature only states that Macs require at least a G3 processor or better. Most people would read that and assume that a brand new Mac with the latest processor would be better than a G3.
Shame on Nikon for hiding this issue under the rug and not providing a prompt solution for their very loyal customers."

We strive to keep our products up to date with the latest operating systems out there, and work closely with Microsoft and Apple to see that this support comes as quickly as possible.
Apple is still offering systems with the PowerPC processors, like the iBook G4, Power Book G4, and the Power Mac G5.
As of today, we do not support the new Mac systems with the Intel chipset, but this is currently being looked into. We have no other information to offer at this time.

But I understand. Nikon is working on it and you have no further information. That's fine.
However, your sales literature is seriously flawed. It says that the scanner will be compatible with a G3 or better processor. If your equipment doesn't work with the newer Intel processor, then it's NOT compatible with a G3 or better; it's ONLY compatible with a G3, G4, & G5.
My complaint is that you should either make a note in your literature at least for your vendors or issue an estimated date of when you're going to fix the problem.
As I explained, this is a PRE-SALES question and your attitude towards me is troubling. I was looking to purchase between four and eight of these scanners and because of inaccurate information in YOUR brochures, I almost purchased thousands of dollars of useless computer systems.
Maybe you should forward my question up the chain of command at Nikon... to somebody that cares more about what POTENTIAL customers think.
Meanwhile, I will post this issue at dozens of Mac user forums so that others don't make a big mistake by thinking a new Nikon scanner will work on their new Mac computer system.

I think everyone with a Nikon Scanner who is considering the purchase of an Intel Mac or vice-versa should send Nikon a flood of complaints regarding the issue. How long can this really take them? The new Macs have been out for quite a while now.
In my experience, Nikon has excellent equipment but once they identify an issue, they do nothing to resolve it. It gets swept under until the next scanner is released.
Example: The older LS-4000 scanner had firewire communication "issues". Issues that were never fully resolved but the LS-5000 scanner is now USB-2.0

MobileMe, iCloud and Macbook Core Duo

My gf has a macbook intel core duo, so we can't go higher than OS X.6 but OS X.7 is required for free iCloud. I have an iPhone 3G which can go no further than iOS 4 and she has an iPhone 3GS which is on iOS5.
We have MobileMe which is soon to become defunct and are interested in iCloud and want our data to be synced between our mac and iPhones, but as far as I can see Apple offer no solution other than buying another new iPhone and Mac.
Is this right or am I missing something? I find it incredible that Windows users on Vista (no hardware limitation specified but assume old PCs can't run Vista) can get iCloud but Apple supporters can't due to the software limitation. My gf had no choice as she was starting a course and needed a computer to do her course work on and the Core 2 Duo was still not out at the time. We went Mac as we always had in the past.
So other than spending a fortune on a new Mac and phone is our only solution Google Mail?

Despite the official Apple line, you can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'. You can't get fuull functions, but it's worth it if even only to retain your mail.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it. You may find the MobileMe email settings will continue to work for a time after migrating but it will stop eventually so you should not rely on this. You should delete your MobileMe email account from Mail.
You can then set up Mail manually in Snow Leopard to access iCloud email; it's a slight fudge because the 'wizard' will attempt to connect you to MobileMe as soon as you enter an @me.com address. The process, which includes a workaround for this, is described here:

You may be able to sync your calendars to iCloud by means of an unsupported hack, but you cannot sync Contacts or Bookmarks and iCloud's other facilities will not work. This page outlines the situation when you migrate to iCloud, including a link to the calendar hack:

There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.
I don't know about a phone with iOS4: I would assume you could set up the Mail app manually with the same settings as in the link above, but calendar syncing may not be possible - you would have to ask in the iPhone forum.

MBP Core Duo 17" 2.16Ghz - Why is 2GB the limit? 4GB?

All the past and future Mac Notebooks allowed memory upgrades when the chips either became available or affordable. The Apple store advisor (when I purchased last year) said that like older Mac Notebooks they assumed that the MBP memory would be upgradeable later. I know, why did I believe the store clerk? I am a Photographer and I can't afford a notebook every year and I need more memory for PS3 and LR now. Is there any hope a firmware update will fix this or is this another penalty for being an early Apple adopter. Is the limit real or a way to artificially differentiate models?

Sorry. No hope. It's a limitation of the Intel Chipset and applies to all machines based on these chips.
Your best bet is to sell and buy a new one.

MBP Core Duo 2.16Ghz Display Problem

After watching an hour of steve jobs and bill gates D5, my MBP display now doesn't display normally anymore. The display is discolored, the color is all whacked out. I don't know what happen, i ran the hardware test and it found nothing. I suspect that it's a video card problem due to overheating, but i put it on a desk with proper ventilation and it's not like this is the first time I used the MBP more than an hour. Please let me know what is going on, thanks.

MBP CORE DUO 1.83GHZ SLOWING DOWN

Hello everybody I have noticed that my MBP with 1.5 Gig of Ram is slowing down: I'm geting a lot of spinning wheels, and I'm experiencing an annoying delay of 1 sec when I click to open a folder and the actual opening...

Perhaps you could first try repairing permissions and restarting (if you have not tried it yet).
If that does not fix, then you could look at other options.
