DOS on a Mac

Still an open topic, since a lot of Windows users are eagerly to find relief from its bugs and upgrades.
On my iBook I have MS-Virtual PC 7 w/ Windows 2000 Professional.
Works very well with Windows software, perfectly integrated with Mac environment.
Don't try to install a DOS application, though: it will not work.
I tried to install Connectix Virtual PC 6.1 and my IBM PC-DOS licensed copy. Had problems with keyboard layout recognition (Western Spanish). Above all VPC 6.1 and VPC 7 (now from Microsoft) cannot coexist, since they created omonimous folders. Even the rock solid Mac OS go havock.
Seems that Intel Mac, with Parallel, can run MS-DOS 6.2 ver.
Out of budget to buy a whole new machine, me.
Believe me: the DOS software is still the gold reference for text processing. Give a look to Grand View (from Symantec), or Nota Bene for DOS, or the unrivalled Norton Backup for DOS
Bye.

Virtual Machines allow running an operating system (here XP, but almost any possible) as a "guest" of another. The guest OS is given access to the physical resources of the host. On my Mac HD there is a large file which, when the VM is running, is seen as the "C" drive. If I insert a USB device I'm asked whether it is to be connected to the host or the guest. The guest can access the internet. I can copy something on one and paste it in the other, and drag files from one to the other.
VMWare is another vendor, and there are one or two free/shareware systems, but may not be so flexible. There is a comparison here, though it is a bit out of date.

I have tried to format my HDD from MS-DOS fat to MAC OS Extended via disk utility but after formating turns to the same MS-DOS FAT format why?my current OS is 10.5

You will need to perform an Internet Recovery or be able to boot the computer using a Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later DVD. For the former:
Restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until you see a globe appear in the gray startup screen. This may take a little while so be patient. You need to have an internet connection for this to work - preferably using Ethernet.
After a fairly long period of time - 15 minutes or more - the recovery screen will appear. Select Disk Utility from the main menu, and click on the Continue button.
    1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    6. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install OS X from the main menu and click on the Continue button. Follow the onscreen instructions to install OS X onto the internal drive.

  • Reformat ms-dos drive to Mac format

    Hello,
I've been getting an error message, "disk erase failed" when trying to reformat a drive from a MS-DOS to a Mac OS Journaled drive. It simply will not allow me to reformat. What do I need to do to achieve this?
    Thanks,

Not all external drives can be formatted to HFS+. Some cannot be formatted to any Mac format.
It depends on the drive firmware and maybe even the drive itself.
You might try updating to 10.5.7. One post in these forums indicated that 10.5.7 did allow HFS+ for some flashdrives. Perhaps it also includes physical ones as well.

  • Is Darwin DOS in a Mac case? How do I get back to Panther?

Does anyone know why my computer would stop its regular OSX 10.3.9 boot up, and default to a black welcome to Darwin screen. The screen is similar to a DOS screen. Scary, I thought this stuff didn't happen to macs! When I get to the screen the computer proceeds to ask me for user name and password. After typing that in, the computer it logs me in, but the rest is a foreign. I don't know what command to type in to make OS X start. I thought about trying to reboot the computer from the cd rom, but I cant even get the cd rom to open. Weird! Is there anyone out there that might know what to do? Some Genius that may know Darwin. The commands that is! I'd highly appreciate anyones help. PLEEEEEEEEASE HELLLLLLLP!

sounds like it is booting in single-user mode, this gives you a login without the gui, instead you get a unix shell
once you've loggged in and get the command prompt, type...
    reboot
    ...and hit the enter key
this will shutdown the mac and restart it, it should then boot normally
if you still get the same after reboot, then put the osx disk in the drive, then login and reboot again
this time hold down the C key as the mac shuts down and restarts, once it starts booting it should load from the osx disk

  • Porting a DOS app to Mac OS

I hate to sound like a noob lol, but I was wondering how I would rebuild a DOS application's C++ source code file(s) on Mac without changing any of the code inside Xcode. I have the following files that were given to me, by a windows user:
    dialog.aps
    dialog.rc
    dns.h
    dproxy.h
    spsof.c
    spsof.dsp
    spsof.dsw
    spsof.ncb
    spsof.opt
    spsof.plg
The DOS program is all command line, and is used for my game cube to connect to the pc while this "proxy" program is running. I know it is a bit confusing, and if anyone thinks they can help or needs more info I will gladly send you the files to see what can be done. I am not exatly sure where to put all the files under in Xcode. Any help would be great!

DOS socket libraries aren't quite the same as real BSD sockets. I'd say it's extremely, extremely improbable that this program will work without changes.
And that's why I wrote "you won't be able to do it."
Somebody with network programming experience could make it work.

  • How to format MS-DOS (FAT) to Mac OS??

I need to format an MS-DOS (FAT) partition to Mac OS....
How do i do this in Disk Utility? It won't read the MS-DOS.. and renames  it disk1s2..

Well actually i was trying to reformat it from MS-DOS to Mac OS. My Boot Camp partition somehow formated my external hard drive and while i can access my files in Windows, ofc i am not able to use it in OS X. So what i did was, luckily i had enough space for a new Mac OS partition that i can transfer my files too. Can you possibly help me with Windows? There is this common annoying thing, it won't give me permission to change my new Mac OS partition nor  the MS-DOS partition :/. I've experinced this before, but if i can just find out how to get permission i can copy the files and delete the MS-DOS . Please don't respond telling me about restore function in DU, no offence of course .

  • How to run c   using dos box in mac

I have installed dos box but have trouble finding how to open c++ using dos box. A blue screen of dos box appears what are we supposed to enter there to get in c++

No XML required, but you must put the class into a package.
Packages are folders with some files that identify whats in them, so you will end up with something like

  • Don't know where else to post this, Can you run the old MS DOS on a Mac?

The company I work for is a PC based invironment. I can of course get around most of that but there is one huge stumbling block.
Believe it or not, the company is still using an old MS DOS application to look up orders over the network.
Is there currently anyway to run a DOS program of my PowerBook G4? If not will these new MacBooks be able to?
    Thanks,
    -Tom

Yes using Virtual PC on your G4 PowerBook.
The new MacBooks can not run Virtual PC, however can dual boot with Windows XP SP2 and if the DOS applications can run on XP SP2 then you will be able to run them.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like you have a program designed to run on Microsoft Windows, or even older (1980's) MS-DOS, rather than Mac OS X. If you have Windows on your Mac installed via Boot Camp, try booting into Windows first, and then loading the CD.  If you don't have Windows, it's probably cheaper to buy a new program designed for Mac than to purchase a copy of Windows (US$120 or more), not even knowing for certain if your old program will run.

  • How do I transfer huge library of non-iTunes songs from Mac to PC?

    Hello,
I have a Macbook with about 5,000 songs on it, all of which are burned from actual hard copies of CDs that I own. Rather than re-burning each CD to my new Windows computer, I would like to see if there's a way to transfer all these songs from Mac to PC using an external hard drive.
The real question is how can I format my external hard drive to be recognized on both a Macbook running Snow Leopard and a PC running Windows 7?
    Thank you!

Format it as MS-DOS from the Mac, or exFAT from the PC, or use a network instead of the drive.

  • The External HDD that causes the SystemUIserver to cripple Mac Mini

    Hello all,
I have recently reinstalled my mac mini, starting with a secure delete of the Macintosh HD and complete DVD re-install with Mac OS X 10.6.4. I saved all of my data onto my external HDD which is a Western Digital 320GB. (Before i deleted and re-installed my mac i wiped this external HDD and formatted it to MS-DOS format using mac's disk utility software, so that i can move data between my HP Laptop (which i will be getting rid of soon and move to a mac book) and the mac mini with ease!)
Following the re-install i started to move all of my files and folders back to the mac when my mac became very very very sluggish. Taking 30-45 seconds to load safari (much longer for bigger programmes) and when i wanted to copy files across from my Ext HDD onto the mini it would copy at about 2-3MB/sec.
I subsequently went into the activity monitor and under the system memory tab saw that the SystemUIServer was using 3.14GB of real memory and was running the CPU at 80-90%. This was my problem. I then when onto the web to see why i was having such issues with speed and USB file transfer and forums talked about USB 1.0/1.1 selected or not having enough RAM which was not the problem here.
I then chose to force quit the SystemUIserver and my system started flying again, up to full speed, but it was only for 30 seconds until i saw the memory pie chart start to turn yellow once more as SystemUIserver started to eat up my real memory, (RAM).
I then turned off my Ext HDD, force quit systemUIserver and i once again had a stable system. So what is the problem??????
There is a communication error between my HDD and my mac which means that when i plug it in systemUIserver goes crazy, and slows the machine. What i do not know is how to get both my HDD and Mac talking without using up all of the RAM. Allowing me to transfer all of my documents back onto my mac. Why is this an issue???????.......Any help on this matter would be really kind as i did not have this issue on the previous install, but now i cannot stop this from happening.
    Thank you

    Hello again,
I have subsequently discovered that it is any external media that i plug in causes this fault. (my other external HDD, my 2.0 GB usb stick!)
Looks like that this issue is slightly bigger than i initially thought!
    Thank you in advance

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • External HD compatible for Mac and PC

Hi, anyone knows how to make an external HD compatible for Mac and PC?
I tried formatting in ExFAT and MS DOS but on Mac does not let to copy big files (aprox 4GB) onto the HD. And if I format on Mac Extended, Windows doesnt recognize.

    Thank you OGELTHORPE and JoeyR,
Yes, I tried formatting in Ex FAT, MS DOS, and Mac Extended and did all kind of tests trying to copy from one computer to another. I have being reading in some forums also that some people have the same problem.
Formatting in FAT 32, I had to use fat32formatting.exe from this link http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm because the HD is of 500GB.
But now I have the problem that big files cannot be copied on Mac (aprox over 4GB).
ExFAT cannot be done on PC, I guess is because of the size of the HD. I only tried formatting Exfat on Mac but PC does not recognize.
Fornat it exFAT ON a Windows PC. If you are running Windows XP you need a update from Microsoft so XP can read/write and format drives exFAT. You also nee to be running either XP SP2 or SP3 to install the update from Microsoft.
Let me add that formatting it exFAT on a Mac can cause problems. Windows may not see the drive as formatted. That is why I say to format it on a Windows PC. Then both Windows and Mac will see the drive.
