DOS printing
Hi,
I am trying to convince my Dad to buy a Mac but he runs this very old DOS program for his business. The program prints out invoices and proposals specific to his business. I was able to run the program perfectly on my mac using Boxer App and Dosbox. However, DOS only recognizes printers connected to LPT or COM ports. At the moment he has a PC that still has a Parallel port on it for the printer. Is there anyway that Snow Leopard or any third party software has the capablility of "tricking" the computer to make an LPT port? Or does anyone know if purchasing a USB to Serial port cable would do the trick? Thanks. I am sorry if I posted in the wrong area as well.
I use Parallels for a couple of old PC apps. The "printer" I have set up on LPT1 (Windows XP) goes to a file on the Mac, from where I can print it to a real printer. Don't know if that helps ...

Dos printer capture on Windows XP
I have a client that is running an old database application on Btrieve.
It was set up originally on Netware 3.12 with DOS clients, and has been
ported to Netware 4.11 with Windows 98 clients.
The Netware 4.11 server is on the way out (old age) and we have it running
on a Netware 5.1 server with Pervasive 2000. We are getting performance
issues with Windows 98 clients but performance is excellent with Windows XP
clients except for one very significant problem, printing.
The application uses captured printers and I can find no way that works to
do this in Windows XP, even with the new client 4.91 SP 3.
When I print in the application, I get an error (error 8832h in
VLM_PrintRedirCancel), which, of course, is not found in the knowledgebase.
I tried the Microsoft-suggested net use command, and, once I figured out
the syntax errors in their instructions, I captured the printer but it
still did not work.
The printer in question is on a Windows 98 machine.
All mapping is done apparently with a Netware 3.12 script which I can't
access to change or correct or add mapped printers (no Netware 3.12 on the
system and I have no way of using syscon to access the bindery object).
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Martin FriesI tried right clicking the red N and capturing the printer port and I tried
using the Microsoft net use command and I tried a couple of versions of

Our HP 4V is dying and we are looking at replacing it with the P4015tn. We have a very old DOS accounting program that prints to one of three LPTx ports captured with Net Use. The accounting software uses a table of user entered escape code sequesnces to control fonts and spacing. Currently we are able to print to the 4V and a 4SI. Will the P4015tn support the escape code sequesnces.

How to print crystal report through DOS
Can we print a crystal report from report viewer in text mode for dot matrix printer through command prompt
Hi
I dont think there is a specific method for printing CR in DOS.
Try the following procedure:
first make a .txt file of the report and on the click execute a .bat file which should contain the command for printing to lpt1 the required generated .txt file.Use Shell() to execute the bat file.
I hope this works for you

Printing from a DOS application to Adobe PDF Printer
I have been asked to provide reports from a legacy DOS application to PDF and of course decided to use my Adobe PDF Printer that came with the copy of Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard I purchased. I am running Windows XP.
I am able to overcome the obvious problem of mapping LPT1 to the Adobe PDF Printer, however, all the DOS print jobs just sit there in the queue and do nothing. I have tried forcing a form feed within print processor but Adobe keeps overwriting the processor used with standard RAW.
What do I have to do create PDF's from DOS based print jobs?
I apologise if this question has been asked before and I have not managed to find it on searching through.
Any help would be very much appreciated. This is not going to work. The printing architecture just doesn't do
what you want it to do.
The PDF printer works because a Windows program uses GDI (a
programming interface) to describe what it wants to print in graphical
terms. This gets converted to PDF. What you are hooking into in the
DOS world is just that part of the printer that carries the already
formed printer file to the printer hardware.
There may be hope if your DOS application is capable of printing to a
PostScript printer. If so, you can capture the stream and use
Distiller to convert it directly.

How 2 print large characters using dos
i need 2 print a column in large characters while generating the report. i have to use dos printing only.
I assume by 'dos' you mean you can't go through a printer dirver but must write to a printer port (LPT:) directly.
In this case, your ony hope is to find the doc. for the printer and see what support it has. HP printers hava a language (there's HPGL, but also a simpler one for small printers), and then of course there's PostScript.
This used to be the way everyone did printing 'til it was hidden from us by printer drivers
Good luck! -
How Do I Redirect LPT1 Printer Port to 'LOCAL Printer' in Windows 7
I have previously redirected LPT1 Port to a 'Network Printer' as well as 'Print Server' with NO PROBLEMS.
However, I have NOT been able to redirect LPT1 Port to a 'LOCAL' PRINTER. I have already set up:
- new HP Laser Printer (tested, no problem printing in Windows)
- the printer is SHARED, shared name is "HPLaser" (tested by viewing Shared Printer Name and Computer Name in DOS)
- bat file as --> Net
use Lpt1 \\DkTop1\HPLaser /persistent:yes
(I checked to ensure the 'Computer
Name' and the 'Shared
Printer Name' are correct. Tested by running bat command, no
error message)
When printing in DOS and viewing "What's Printing" from Printer Icon,
- the DOS print job appears immediately as "spooling",
- then "printing" and "USB001" Port.
So, it appears to be printing from the DOS application, also
note NO ERRORS from DOS Program or Windows but it does NOT print.
The only difference between the 'Local Printer' setup and
the 'Print Server Printer' setup is,
the 'PRINT SERVER'
goes to an "IP Address w/Standard TCP/IP Port"
and the 'LOCAL PRINTER'
goes to "USB001 Virtual Printer for . . .".
IS THERE A PROBLEM in
SETTING UP THE 'LOCAL PRINTER'
with 'USB001 VIRTUAL PRINTER' Port???
If so, how do I resolve? If not, please note what is the problem(s) and resolution(s). Thanks.Hi,
you install the new printer, which port you choose to use? What do you mean by saying "'USB001 VIRTUAL PRINTER' Port"
here?
As the printer is configured locally, there is no need to redirect the port to it.
Install a printer
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-hk/windows/install-printer#install-printer=windows-7
Here for more information:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-hk/windows-vista/add-or-remove-a-printer
If possible please take a try to delete the printers holding the Lpt1 port, then reconfigure the local printer following the instructions provided above.
Hope this may help
Best regards
Michael

Problem sending output directly to a shared printer
Hi.
I am having problems in generating character reports output directly to my printers, my situation is as follows:
We have a Windows 2003 server running an application server 10g and a forms and reports application, if I connect a printer directly to the server my report output is printed perfectly, the problem starts when I try to print from any client machine, since windows does not let you rename a shared printer (it lets you rename the printer in the machine to witch it is connected but in any other machine sharing this printer Windows appends a "on machineX" to the printer name so this poses a problem when trying to pass a desname parameter to reports since it contains spaces.
I solved this issue by adding a local printer to the server machine pointing to a local port that connects this printer to the physical printer in the client machine, this works all right to print from windows (notepad, DOS print command everything prints perfectly). But my reports won’t print. Whenever I send a report to this printer the job gets into the spool but in the status says "error-printing", this only happens when the jobs are sent directly to the printer. If I lookup the job in the reports server queue it appears as correctly finished.
I can even lookup the .txt file from the reports cache and issuing a DOS print command prints the job without issues in my shared printer.
Hope someone can help me out in this one since I am running out of ideas as to how to solve this issue.
ThanksI forgot one important piece which is why I am asking the question. I am running the report within an Oracle 10g form. I pass all the parameters across to the Reports Server, as seen above. When I run via the PDF option, I just change the DesType to Cache and DesFormat =PDF. When I run with this, it works and displays the report in a new browser window.
I just want to run the report with the exact same parameters but instead of generating a PDF, I want to run the report and send it directly to the printer without previewing it.

Connecting HP J4580 usb thro wired USB printer server
Hi All,
I am have printing using the Airlink APSUSB1 usb1.1 printer server with PSC950 & HP 1400 series printer in the home network.
Recently I replaced the usb printer with new HP J4500 and I am unable to print thro' the network connectivity. I am able to print using the USB port.
I was told if the native Dos printing support is required for this work.
Has anyone successfuly connected a AIO J4500 USB to Printer server ?
thanks
Udaya+would it be possible to split the USB cord coming from the Printer+
I'm afraid not. The connection must be direct to either the TC or your computer, but not both at the same time.
Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide will guide you through the process of setting up the printer. Unfortunately, Apple does not offer a printer compatibility list, so the only way to really know if your device is compatible is to try to see if it can be configured.
Perhaps HP would could help in this regard. -
dear all,
i have epson validator printer on my clone/pord servers, we are able to printer receipts successfully on the validator from the prod server, we clond the prod server to other server and we add the eposn validator printer to it, when printing from the command line it dose print on the validator but when print from the application it dose not print on the validator receipts paper but it print on the normal slip paper (A4) paper. what could be wrong i check the printer settings on both prod/clone they are exaclty the same and i checked the prt files and the initialization command and they are the same.
any hint will be helpful
fadiHellow there,
Are you using PASTA or not?
Because If you are using PASTA, this note will be helpful (267026.1).
Otherwise, check this note (297522.1) which may help you understand where the error is.

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

Problem in installing j2sdk on cygwin-a-top-windowsXP
Sir/madam,
I have cygwin installed on windowsXP. I am new to java. I needed j2sdk for a program and I downloaded the Linux .bin file "j2sdk-1_4_2_07-linux-i586-rpm.bin". I tried to use "./ " installation method as suggested on the site, but got the following messeges after agrreeing to licence terms:
trap: bad signal HUP
Unpacking..
Checksumming...
0
0
Extracting...
./install.sfx.924 not found
Done
But nothing was installed in the folder where I ran this command. Please tell me the solution at the earliest. Whether I downloaded the wrong file for Cygwin-win installation or something else is there. I have even tried the simple bin file but same problem exists.
Thanking in advance.
Rohit ThakkarPerhaps when flaming about what cygwin is or is not one should consider how it is used. Some folks take their unixy source and compile it, linking with the cygwin dll. But others of us live in a bash or ksh shell in an xterm, all UNDER CYGWIN ON WINDOWS. The problems folks have is that so many proprietary...uh...things, like Javac/java have hard coded methodologies, such as depending on a %PATH% vs. $PATH...Slash vs. backslash. Here's what is probably what should be known by you superdeduper portablility language lovers:
java -classpath `cygpath -wp $CLASSPATH` [arguments]
or
java -classpath $(cygwath -wp $CLASSPATH) GoodByeCruelWorld.class

DESCRIPTION
The cygpath program is a utility that converts Windows native file-
names to Cygwin POSIX-style pathnames and vice versa. It can be used
when a Cygwin program needs to pass a file name to a native Windows
program, or expects to get a file name from a native Windows program.
Alternatively, cygpath can output information about the location of
important system directories in either format.
The -u and -w options indicate whether you want a conversion to UNIX
(POSIX) format ( -u) or to Windows format ( -w). Use the -d to get
DOS-style (8.3) file and path names. The -m option will output Win-
dows-style format but with forward slashes instead of backslashes.
This option is especially useful in shell scripts, which use back-
slashes as an escape character.
In combination with the -w option, you can use the -l and -s
options to use normal (long) or DOS-style (short) form. The -d option
is identical to -w and -s together.
Caveat: The -l option does not work if the check_case parameter of
CYGWIN is set to strict, since Cygwin is not able to match any Win-
dows short path in this mode.
The -p option means that you want to convert a path-style string
rather than a single filename. For example, the PATH environment vari-
able is semicolon-delimited in Windows, but colon-delimited in UNIX.
By giving -p you are instructing cygpath to convert between these
formats.
The -i option supresses the print out of the usage message if no file-
name argument was given. It can be used in make file rules converting
variables that may be omitted to a proper format. Note that cygpath
output may contain spaces (C:\Program Files) so should be enclosed in
quotes.

The capital options -D, -H, -P, -S, and -W output directories used
by Windows that are not the same on all systems, for example -S might
output C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 or C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. The -H shows the Win-
dows profiles directory that can be used as root of home. The -A
option forces use of the "All Users" directories instead of the cur-
rent user for the -D and -P options. On Win9x systems with only a
single user, -A has no effect; -D and -AD would have the same out-
put. By default the output is in UNIX (POSIX) format; use the -w or
-d options to get other formats.

I am trying to print a document from a DOS window to the "Adobe PDF" printer that converts documents printed to PDF files. It is using the standard DOS print job called "Remote downlevel document". It shows this job in the print queue for a moment but then disappears with no usual prompt for save as file info. Any suggestions?
Hello Big John
I understand that it is difficult to determine which forum to post in since there are so many. This particular forum (sharing and storage) was created to help those transitioning from Photoshop.com to Adobe Revel. I am moving your post to the correct forum so that it can get proper attention.
I'll put I this posting in theAcrobat community so the experts there can help you.
We also have many other forums relating to other Adobe products

Out of curiosity, can you tell me how you found our forum page?

cokkies from core javaJava is NOT JavaScript. You say "core java" (which is a stupid term anyway) a few times yet you also mention JavaScript and talk about document.print which is JavaScript.
Is there any Java portion to any of this anywhere?
