  • K8N Master2-Far, Single 144 Opteron & Areca 1220

    Hi
I would appreciate feedback please.  I have already built a Gigabyte based Samba server using the Areca 1120 (PCI-X) RAID controller & 2 x Opterons.
For reasons too complicated to explain, I now want to build much the same thing but using a single 144 Opteron and the Areca 1220 (PCI-E) RAID Controller.  This is JUST a Samba file server, it doesn't do games, isn't used for browsing the web, OpenOffice, etc. and sadly, will not be 'Folding'.
I was on the point on ordering a K8N Master2-Far, Areca, ECC RAM, PSU (dual-line !) etc. when I read some of the postings on this board.  Now, I'm not so sure . . .
There appear to be a number of 'issues' with this MoBo.  If you have built a system based on it, how has it gone ?  What BIOS version are you using ?  What PSU are you using ?  I would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who has experience with it and with the Areca 1220.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • K8N Master2-FAR

    Hi guys,N
I'm in kinda trouble. I bought this new socket 940 MSI motherboard K8N Master2-FAR.
The problem is the following. I dont know what power supplie to use for this type of motherboard. It requires 3 +12V connectors for JPWR1 (24pin), JJPWR2 (8pin) and JPWR3 (4pin).
Now most power supplies have only 2 12V cables , one for the 24pin and one for the 8pin. As its not enough this motherboard also requires a power supply that comes with a -5V pin supply (donno what that means).
For the moment i bought an Antec Neo HE500 watts power supply but he doesnt have a third cable (JWPR3) and doesnt support -5V pin supply. Antec replied to me that NONE of there new power supply supports this -5V pin supply
Can anyone plz help me? Maybe a list of compatible power supplies or the power supplie that MSI used to test this motherboard.

    Geoffrey

    well ok,
lemme explain as clear as possible cause my english is not my native language :D.
    1) In the manual of the msi mainboard is written that the power supply MUST COME with a -5V pin supply (Its very rare on a power supply cause even Antec, or coolermaster hasnt such a line). Now, i looked at the tested power supplys on that mainboard and I saw a ZIPPY power supply that comes with such a -5V pin supply. The -5V pin is located at the 20th pin of the 24pins connector.
Now this is the tricky part: MSI mainboard (8kN master 2far) Requires such a -5V BUT on the manual is a schedule of the 24pin connector on the mainboard itself. On that schedule is NOWHERE a -5V pin located. So why the hell do they require a power supply with a -5V pin supply when the 24pin connector doesnt have one. On the 20th pin is 3VSB located and NOT -5V as the zippy connector does.
Isnt this confusing......  .... how do i suppose the let my mainboard work properly when they give contradictionary information  . I find that a 275€ mainboard may have a better manual .
    Can anyone explain this? :D

  • K8N Master2-FAR MS-9620 (v1.X) - Adequate PSU?

    Hey all,
This is my first post. Been having some post/ display issues as well as continuous beeps that do not stop until i turn the PC off. All turns on and runs, but absolutely zero display to the monitor and continuous beeps.  No pattern...just beeps and black screen.
After much research, resetting cards, resetting ram, using single stick, single graphics card, etc. (not touching CPUs yet) - i've understood the PSU could be faulty. (thanks to another post)
With this board K8N Master2-FAR MS-9620 (v1.X)  the manual recommends a minimum 600w supply as well as a -5V pin supply (page 2-8 of the manual)
Any education and advice on which PSUs in the current market are compatible for this board is greatly appreciated.
What should i be looking for?
What on new egg tells me the PSU has a -5V pin supply?
Build was done in 2006, pooped out in 2012 - life happens, and i'm finally getting around to working on it. Original PSU was 550W Cooler Master 'RS-550-ACLY'
Thank you so much, and i do hope that the PSU is the issue and not the board.

computer worked no problem before, for a solid couple years - pretty mcuh sat for a while
broke it down  to troubleshoot: 1 cpu, new 1000 watt psu, 1 ram stick, 1 graphics card.
Interchanged out each individually and tested after each swap out - same results. Tryed different ram in different slots.
    Just keeps beeping.
I did get a new case. Would the case front panel connections cause issues?  hmmm?  but this was having same issues in first case (just didn't have a speaker connected to board to hear any beeps)
maybe i should disconnect the case connections and then try booting without it connected?
i'll try that, but at the same time - i've been hunting for another compatible motherboard to support the devices....with these being from 2005/2006 and technology advancing so fast - finding similar ATX board, with dual socket 940 opterons and SLI ready  capability is a bear.

  • K8N Master2-FAR - System fan shows 0 rpm ???

Hi, I just got the K8N Master2-FAR and equipped it with two dual core opterons 265 and 4gb of dual channel ram.
My biggest problem right now is that all the system fans are running at full speed, though the hardware monitor in the BIOS show 0 rpms for them?
At the same time my cpu fans are blowing at about 3600 rpms even though their temperature is only about 36 degrees C...
It sounds a lot like a jetplane, and I'm worried the case will start flying

I've got the system fans fixed now  -Faulty wiring... my own fault
However the speed of the cpu fans are still running 3600-4000 when they are idle at about 36-37 C  ???
like what i have said, u can use speedfan to control it..
@admin, soory for using msn stylo....

  • Quick FYI: WaterCooling Block compatible with the MSI K8N Master2-FAR

If you're like me, you hated the noise from the stock CPU fans on the K8N Master2-FAR... well I did alot of searching and couldnt find any difinitive information about what fit, or didnt fit, on that motherboard as far as heatsinks or cooling blocks.
I just finished installing a water cooling system in my system, and I used the PolarFlo E-Series CPU blocks, and they fit perfectly!

  • Windows XP won't load on K8N Master2-FAR after BIOS Flash

I downloaded the w9620nms.110 version BIOS from the MSI website and flashed the BIOS.  Since that time, Windows XP Pro will not load successfully.  I re-flashed to go back to the 1.00 version and even tried the 1.26 version I got from this site.  Each time it still didn't work.  I cleared the CMOS and retried.  Still no good.
I reformatted the windows partition on the HDD (nVidia RAID stripe) and reinstalled windows.  The installation seemed to go fine, but when the system tried to load Windows, it failed again.  Just keeps re-booting.
Is there some setting in the BIOS that got changed in the flash that I'm missing that effects this?  A setting that needs changing back (other than the SATA RAID which I've re-set and whish is recognized by windows and the BIOS).
Or, it is possible the RAID stripe was corrupted somehow?
The system worked for several months before the flash.
Any help on this is much appreciated!!

I have one question for you. The motherboard has three power connectors. A 24 pin , a 8 pin and a 4 pin. Looking at your specs i see that you have the OCZ Powersteam 520W Power Supply Unit. I looked at a review of this PSU and it has the following connectors for this: 20+4 connector and a 4+4 connector. So the 24 pin and the 8 pin connectors are covered. All the pci-e connectors i see are 6 pins, also for this PSU. What did you do with the 4 pin connector close to the pci-e slot?

  • K8N master2-far doesn't detect Areca 1220 raid controller

Today i purchased the last components for my system. Everything works perfectly except for my Areca 1220 8x pci-e raid controller. As i feared the controller is nowhere to be seen, not in the bios, not in windows. I already had bios version v1.10 but flashed the bios version on the msi site anyway. Nothing changed. On the msi site under "QVL" i see my Areca at the bottom of the list. Does that mean that this MB can work with this controller? What must i do to make it work? I think i have to see it at least in the bios!
Your help is appreciated. Now 5x 300 GB of storage is doing nothing.

Quote from: Bas on 10-November-05, 20:30:00
Maybe you need to update the cards firmware.
I already looked into that matter and found out that the only way to upgrade the firmware or bios is to use their http tool McRAID Storage Manager. This of course is done in windows. Now windows doesn't see my Areca 1200 and so McRAID doesn't see it either. I can't update my Areca.
This problem is well known by the motherboard manufacturers. Let me quote something from the Areca site:
Q10150407 - Is there any socket 939 motherboards that work with your model ARC-1210 raid controller? In a SLI board I would use one 16x slot for Graphics card.
Our PCIe ARC-12xx series controller uses Intel IOP332/333 processor. The Intel high performance IOP (IOP331/332/333) has integrated the bridge chip in the controller. But the original NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset BIOS has the problem after Bridge IRQ routing. All controllers use Intel new IOP 332/333, such as Areca, Intel, and LSI have the same IRQ routing problem. Those NVIDIA 939 M/Bs can be worked in the Windows environment. Due to the Windows system takes over the BIOS job, and Linux & FreeBSD need to use the M/B BIOS, so it has problem with our PCIe controller.
Currently, DFI, Ausu, MSI and Gigabyte have BIOS to solve the problem. If you have problem in this kind of mainboard, please try to manufacture latest BIOS.
We have tested DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI & ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and Asus A8N-SLI Premium. It works very well with our firmware 1.38 and newest mainboard BIOS. Try to swap the graphic and our controller, if you find some warm boot problem in the Asus A8N-SLI Premium.
I still think i need an updated bios for the k8n master2-far (ms-9620). The fact remains that there are problems reported with every SLI motherboard. I knew this already from the socket 939 platforms. I was sceptical about the k8n master2-far but thought that a server MB should have no problems. I did ask a question about this however at the shop where i bought this MB. I even found an reply from you to another user who had similar concerns about the Areca controllers and an SLI MB. You said that it should not be a problem. Even so i always kept the possibily open that this problem can happen. And here i am
Thanks for your help. More input is always appreciated as i am still waiting for an answer from MSI in the Netherlands about this problem. Right now my server is doing nothing. I hope my raid controller will work very soon.

  • Overclocking the K8N Master2 FAR

Hi, I was wondering if anyone with the K8N Master 2 FAR board has had much success overclocking it.
I've checked through bios and either i'm blind or there isn't an option to lower the multiplier( Never OC an AMD 64).
I am at present running it at 215 x 13 but would love to get it higher.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Sean

I've owned this board since it was launched, and MSI never followed through with the promises of overclocking.  No way to lower multiplier with 2 cpus.
Here I am looking for drivers for Vista, and downloads for this board have completely vanished from MSI global support.  This is the first and last MSI board that I will own.
Balony, Vista is the problem, not this board or MSI.
Vista lacks a lot of drivers, if you want to complain about Vista, I suggest you write Billy Gates an email....as MS wants serious money for their Vista driver signing....this is not an MSI problem....M$ want more money....that's why Vista is lacking drivers.
It didn't vanish at all, this is a server/workstation board, so look at the right section at MSI, you will find it.
As for the OC part of this board, yes you can OC it a lot, no problem at all, will it bring you much? No it won't.
You have just 1 post here, so sorry, I don't take you very serious at all.

  • MOVED: K8N Master2-FAR USB problem in Linux

This topic has been moved to Server/workstation.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=96587.0

    Got it to work.
In order for the keyboard and mouse to work, I had to set the BIOS to USB 1.1 support.
By default, it was set to USB 1.1/2.0.
After I changed the BIOS, I was able to run and configure Linux Fedora Core 5.
Also, Windows Vista Beta 1 worked.  Before, not only the keyboard and mouse wouldn't work but also the installation would crash.
NVIDIA says that the NFORCE USB is natively compatible with default Linux USB drivers.
Apparently, that is not the case.

  • K8N Master2 FAR: Windows 2003 doesn't recognise install to RAID SATA

Summary for those that cant be bothered reading:
    PCI slot: 1 gfx card:
    SATA 1+2: WD HD.
    Raid 1 used.
-Trying to install Windows 2003 small business server premium.
-Installed SATA drivers (both from floppy).
    - Generally windows will stop at 'Setup is starting windows'
It has gone past that point and gets to the drive select/install screen BUT:
-- Using the drivers from the floppy disc, the RAID1 array shows up, but shows boths drives. From my experience it should just show one drive, the array. Both bus/ID were the same and it said they were on nvatabus.
-- Without using the drivers from the floppy it shows both drives, same bus/ID but on atapi.
Tried installing windows but it won't boot after install. No matter what I choose to boot from (Tried NVida array first but I got desperate and tried booting from every other device using ESC @ boot).
    Mainboard faulty?
    END SUMMARY
K my spec should be in my profile sig so thats sorted.
The problem I'm having is driving me insane(er). The two WD sata drives are plugged into sata1/sata2. raid is enabled in the bios and on the sata channels. Made the drives mirrored using RAID 1. Ok thats all ok so far.
Start the windows 2003 small business server premium and press f6 so it asks for the raid drivers. Select both the raid driver and nvidia storage controller drivers (I've tried just choosing only 1 as well).
Ok so after this it carries on until it gets to "Setup is starting windows" (something like that). Generally at this point it will hang. I've left it for a while incase for some weird reason its going slow - nothing happens. So I read the MS KB and it said to disable and remove everything not needed. Well there wasn't anything to remove physically from the board so I tried disabling bios stuff. Disabled: lan/audio/1394/serial/parallel i think that was all. So I tried again.
Same thing happens. Try a few more times, using both drivers on the floppy disk like before. Strangely enough once it worked. HMMM. Next problem is when it got to the drive select screen, there were two drives there  . From previous experience raided drives show up as one. Both drives were though on the same ID and Bus and on nvatabus...(something...) . So I thought, maybe thats just the way this board works.
Installed windows fine, reboot and won't boot. The raid array is marked to boot. Tried manually choosing boot device with ESC. Tried reinstalling again not using the floppy raid drivers and it picks up both drives, this time same id/bus but on atapi, not prefixed with nv.
Why is this such a problem? I just want to raid 1 two drives and install windows to them!

Thats the whole point. The two drives were set as raid1 in the raid bios, as described in the manual. The raid1 array was described as 'healthy'. Windows install kept seeing the 'array' as two seperate drives. I've used raid many times before and never had this.

  • K8N Master2- Far component recommendations

    Hi,
I am an experienced system builder but this is my first foray into an Opteron system, so if you guys could help me with some recommendations I would appreciate it.
    Components Already Chosen
    CASE LianLi PC777 Anniversary Edition
    CPUs: 2 x Opteron 248 (Single Core, 2 CPUs)
Cooling: Asetek Waterchill kit. at least 1 circuit, possibly two for a full SLI rig.
I live in the UK so I would appreciate any store/internet recommendations for the UK.
    PSUs
    1) As single rail 12V PSUs seem hard to find, would a 2 rail system with 20A on the CPU rail be ok and >80% efficiency be ok. A 248 is suppose to need 86 Watts.
    2) Would an SSI PSU be better and if so can someone recommend a model?
    3) Although initially I won't be using an SLI setup, I would like to, so bear this in mind! Would I be better off with two separate PSUs or is it too complicated. I would like the system to be quiet so I was wondering if a two PSUs (PSU 1 motherboard, cpu, SLI - PSU 2 cpu, SLI, hds)
    Memory
Does any one know of a good UK store for REG ECC Memory - I've found 2GB of Kingston PC3200 REG-ECC for £202+VAT+DEL
    Rajiv

A PSU is easy....this one is the one I allway's recomment...
    >>Enermax EG465AX-VE(G)<<
Also known as Enermax FMA 460W, 430W or whatever name they give it....
It's the one that has 33A @ 12V and will be more then able to power your system.
Stay away from the Dual-rail ones, most of them fail because the Opteron 248 consumes about 7-9 amp @ 12V per CPU...
So 2 of them is sort of 18A Max....but powersupplies drop power when the system get's more hot, like in summertime....
That is also why you see very little people with problems in the Winter...but mark my words, there will be plenty in summer again
BTW, those Enermaxes are very quite, I have 2 here in use, one 465 and one 365...I could buy the 465 cheap so I did...but I alway's used the 365 to 100% satisfaction.
That 365 has allready 28A @ 12V...and I have tested it on a K8T-Master-2FAR with 2x Opteron 240 (they consume about the same amount of power 130nm very old ones) combined with 1 15000RPM 40GB SCSI harddisk (real energy consumer!) and an ATI 800XT...never had any problems at, only in the summer with a room-temp of about 40C the powersupply would sometime make a bit of noise because the fan's started spinning faster...but hey, I was allmost cooked myself
Where to buy in the UK? Sorry can't say....maybe you should ask Dr. Stu that, he lives there.
As for the memory, I prefer sticks with Infineon chips on them....Kingston probably works but I don't know...
