Dots instead of time/volume bar

Every so often, my ipod nano will show a row of blue dots instead of the bar that shows the time that a track has been playing or the volume. It eventually goes away, but I'm not sure what I did to make it go away. Any suggestions as to what to do to get rid of the dots and make the time/volume bar come back?

That is the rating screen - where you can rate from 0-5 stars for the song that is currently playing. Use the wheel to select the rating, the press the center button to return to the progress bar.
Cheers!

  • Dots on screen instread of time laps bar

I've had my ipod namo for 5 months now and it has worked fine. I turned on my ipod the other day and i notesed that the volume bar or the time laps bar was not showing. Instead only 5 hollow white dots apear. I can still adjust the volume and track scroll but i cant see the levels or time. Anyone have any suggestions or the same problem? Thanks so much.

The five dots is the rating screen. You should be able to use the center button to scroll through the various screens. However, there is a known issue with the latest updater 1.1 that causes the screen to get stuck on ratings.

  • FIve dots where volume bar should be

My nano seems to be working fine but instead of the time bar / volume bar that is supposed to be at the bottom of the screen while a song is playing, i see five dots. how do i change this? is it a tech issue or just a setting that i cant seem to find? thanks

Is it "stuck" on that screen?
If so, this is a known bug with some iPods.

You may need to update your firmware to the latest version to avoid this happening again.

  • Dots instead of volume indicator?

I have done something to my ipod nano to show 5 dots at the bottom of the screen instead of the volume level and track progress. Does anyone know what I might have done and how to switch it back? Thanks.

You've selected the ratings screen by pressing the center button during playback.
Try pressing the center button a few times to toggle through the options available to you (scrubber, ratings, album art, lyrics, etc..)
If pressing the center button has no effect and the dots remain "stuck" on the screen, then what you're experiencing is a known bug and you'll want to upgrade your ipod to the newest firmware.

  • My I pod will not display volume bar or track time.

I have an Ipod Nano, but all of a sudden it quit showing the volume bar and track times of my songs. In place of the track times are 5 dots going across the bottom of the screen. Does anyone know what is going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    To Michal,
    It's not a problem!
It's the way it is supposed to work!
See the last paragraph on page 24 in the manual:

"Depending on what type of audio you’re listening to, you can press the Center button repeatedly from the Now Playing screen to get to other information and options, such as the rating screen for songs and audiobooks, album art, podcast information, reading speed, and more. Click the Menu button to return to the previous screen. "

'Music' displays but won't play. Settings appear correct and iPhone (3G)  is selected for output.  Startup screen intermittently displays with the lower pause/play volume bar for no clear reason..... developed at the same time as play failure.  Ideas????

    Thank you for the replies.
Appearane of 'Music' functions (I>>   > II   <<I,   plus volume slider)  on the lock/log in screen (when first turning on the iPhone) thus far seems without pattern, i.e. regardless of which if any applications are up in the background, and indeed even when all have been quit.
All visual aspects of 'Music' appear normal after launch including the title scroll across the top in vertical mode. However, while pressing play (>) converts the play (>) icon to pause (II), selected song does not play and the elapsed time bar (upper end between the track count and the repeat/shuffle icons) remains stationary at 0:00 or at any point to which it is dragged.  When using home sharing this same problem persists regardless of what output is selected.
Hope that may prompt a thought somewhere.

  • While playing songs in iPOD, Volume bar and Song time bar does not appear !

    Hi ...
I bought a new 30G iPOD and have added nearly 500 songs. It worked fine for 2 weeks. But now it is experiencing an issue while playing songs - It does not show volume bar as well as Song time bar. But I checked the same for videos, it is working perfect.
Kindly help me resolve this issue ...
    Thanks & Regards,

Sometimes, if you don't allow the screen to refresh before pressing another button, it gets stuck.
    See this for help.
iPod "stuck" on the artwork or rating screen.
As you will see, updating the software can cure this.

  • Volume bar appears in opening screen and time is in double vision

On opening my iPhone there is what appears to be a volume bar toward the top and the time is displayed over a different time in the background. Any suggetions?

You've most likely taken a screen shot of the lock screen and assigned it to your wallpaper. Change your wallpaper and it will go away... Settings > Wallpaper
See p. 105 of the manual for how you took the screen shot... http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf

  • Why is the volume bar gone?

The volume bar has disappeared. Instead there are 5 small dots at the bottom of the screen when I'm listening to a song. What does this mean and how do I fix it? Everything else seems fine. Thanks

It seems that you may have accidentally struck the center button a few times. Try hitting this button a few times and cycling through the different screens (the five dots are part of the rating screen; hitting the center button once more should return you to the main screen).

  • Missing Volume Bar

Hi I have a new nano and after a few days use I have lost the volume bar and the song time in minutes and seconds it just appears as a line of dots can anyone tell me if I can get it back. Thanks

Hi Jill: What you have described is one of the views you can get when listening to the iPod. When a track is playing, you can see elapsed time, album art or rating. The line of dots is the rating (I bet they greyed out meaning no rating set). It may help if you restore you Nano and then re-sync with iTunes. Here's how.... 5R's

  • Can't see volume bar!  Please help...

    Hi everyone,
I just got an ipod video and love it. However, today I cannot see the horizontal volume bar at the bottom of the screen when playing songs. Instead there are about five clear circles at the bottom. I can turn the volume up and down but I just can't SEE THAT.
If you could please suggest things I may try I would greatly appreciate your help. I hope I just messed up the settings or something and did not break it.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Those 5 circles are the "ratings" circles. Mine has frozen on those before. I just hit the center button a couple times and it went back to the volume bar. In case you didn't know, when you're on the volume bar and you hit the middle button, you go to another type of bar that allows you to fastforward or rewind the song/video, you hit it again and you get the 5 circles that you can turn to stars by runnin your finger over the wheel. Like I said before, that is your rating....Hope any of that helped, lol.

  • Song time/progress bar

I listen to podcasts on my Nano. I somehow turned the progress time off and now just have 5 little dots instead of the remaining time of my show. How do I get rid of those 5 dots and get back to having the remaining time show?

You hit the select/center button. while playing a song you hit this button to flip thru a "Seek" bar where you can use the click wheel to move to a section of the song, hit again you goto the album art, hit agian you come to the "5 dots" where you can use the click wheel to put a "Star rating" of 1 to 5. another hit and your back to your "progress" bar

So even if I just ask to pay them to replace the lock button they won't because my screens are third-party?
Apple does not repair devices beyond replacing the screen on some models or a battery replacement.  They replace the ENTIRE device.
For the Out of Warranty replacement cost, you could have gotten a fully functional replacement device.  Instead you chose to spend less to get only the screen replaced and continue to live with additional issues.
Apple will not touch the device now.  They will know that it was opened elsewhere and that the replacement screen is not original.

  • IPod Touch 3.1.3 1G no volume bar.

does anyone has this problem? i plugged in earpiece, reset everything, restore to factory setting, tried everything but still there is no volume bar appearing! There is a very very soft volume but its really depressing you can't adjust the volume!

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
if still problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Have you tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store is in order.
