Double click on .doc file opens Apple Works not Word 98

I'm using Tiger on a 14" iBook. I have Office 98 installed which works OK running under the classic environment.
Only thing is, I can't get it to start when I double click on a .doc file.
I've been thru all the recommended stuff, select the file, "get info", change the application etc... Whatever I try, it just reverts to Apple Works. When I double click the .doc file, I get Apple Works instead of MS Word.
Has any one got any ideas? Is this because Word 98 runs under Classic?
Also, I can open a word (.doc) document by dragging it onto the dock icon for MS Word 98. But if I try the same with an Excel spreadsheet,(dragging it onto the excel icon) it doesn't work. Tiger doesn't seem to like the .xls extension. Was this extension used for something else?

If it was used as a Microsoft Works document, you may need to convert it to Excel first.
Not sure if Excel handles Works documents, but Appleworks does to a limited extent, and Maclinkplus by http://www.dataviz.com/ will better allow you to be able to handle files of unknown type that are spreadsheets.
To change the application a document opens under control-mouse click a document with that extension and select Open With. Select the Other... and find the application in the dialog to open with, and check "Always Open With" if you want to open all documents with that extension with a specific application.

Double Clicking on .indd file opens wrong version of InDesign - Windows 7

Every time I try to just double click on the file to open it opens with InDesign CS5.5. I have CC installed and just went through a whole process online with Adobe Support about removing previous versions using the Cloud tool. I removed all but CC 2014. CS 5.5 does not show up in the Cloud tool. I've also tried to go into my system preferences and set it to open with CC2014 by default. First, it doesn't even show up as an option. Secondly, it doesn't let me select it when I browse for it and select it that way.

Uninstalling older versions after installing a new one is pretty much guaranteed to remove common files you need and mess up program behavior.
In general, unless you hack the registry, Windows will always use the last version of a program that you've installed to open files associated with that program, so reinstalling CC2014 is probably the quickest way to get it associated with .indd files (and to reinstall the icon handler, so you see the correct icons, if you don't now).

Double-click on *.rep file opens in DeskI with "File Reservation" why?

If I double click on myreport.rep it opens the report in DeskI but pops up a Window headed "File Reservation" with the message "myreport.rep is being modified by another user or application. Open as Read-Only, or choose Notify to be alerted when it is available." and buttons Read Only, Notify and Cancel.
If I logon to DeskI and then open the report using File->Open then there is no problem. Why can't I open it by double-clicking on it?
I am using BOXI R2 with SP4 and LAfix_409 on Windows XP to access a BOXI R2 SP4 Enterprise server running on AIX and I am using Enterprise Authentication to logon to DeskI.

Following solution might help you to resolve the issue:
Try deleting the following folders in the registry:
- Start -> Run -> Enter 'regedit'
-Locate and delete the following sub-folders:
-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Suite 11.5\default\BusinessObjects\Application Preferences\Business Reporter\Desktop Intelligence
and
-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Suite 11.5\default\BusinessObjects\Guest User Prefs
Note: Before performing the above mentioned tests please take the backup of the registry.

Can't open Apple Works docs in Pages

Strange, but: The 1st day I used Pages I could open Apple Works and Word docs
just fine. The 2nd day trying to open Apple Works docs resulted in
the message: "Import Error- the Apple Works document has an unsupported file type"
Word docs still open OK. Anyone?

To save as a "newer" AppleWorks file (i.e. AppleWorks 6 file format), you'll need to have AppleWorks 6, which will open older file formats from version 5 and then give you the option to save the as version 6 files.
However, your friend will not be able to open these AppleWorks files with Pages: as Peggy and others have pointed out on numerous occasions, Pages can only open AppleWorks word processing files (and even in this case, there are restrictions; as far as I can remember, it will only open documents with floating graphics. Or was it the other way round, and it cannot open files with floating graphics? If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me, Peggy); it can't open spreadsheet files as iWork '05 doesn't have a spreadsheet program which could handle the data. I'd suggest finding someone who has AppleWorks 6 (anyone with a Mac mini, iMac or eMac), opening the files and saving them in a format which Excel can read.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Double clicking Illustrator (.ai) file does not open a file with opened app.

I have an Illustrator CS5 (15.0.2) running on Windows 7 Pro. Here are the symptoms: when double clicking the Illustrator file once the application is already open, the file will not open. You will see an hourglass for a few seconds, but no file contents are displayed. However, if I were to close Illustrator application and then double click on the file, Illustrator will open the file correctly. Additionally, if I go to File -- Open and manually select the file, it also opens the file correctly. Only double clicking the file once the Illustrator application is already open does not work.
Has anyone seen this issue and knows how-to fix it?

Right click on a .ai file and choose properties, check to see what application is set to open .ai files. Try running in 32 bit mode.

When user double-clicks on a file, then I want my program to open it...

Ok, so I have been having a lot of trouble finding the answer to what I at first thought was a simple question.
I do not know, at all, how to make my program able to open files in the normal sense. Normal sense meaning user double-clicks my_file.xxx, or for that matter right-clicks my_file.xxx and selects open with, and then my_app.jar starts up and opens the file.
I have already created the app, and it runs nicely. This app has a menu bar with the usual File >> Open which works just fine reading my_file.xxx. My_app.jar can also saves my_file.xxx. So I am not having trouble with I/O.
So if someone can give me even the slightest hint in the right direction I'd be very thankful.
p.s. I am working on a mac but my_app.jar will be running mostly on windows so cross-platform is very important.

as possible with a normal person's desktop.I'm sorry, you're right, I completely misread your post. I would definitely take the tactic of writing a .reg file and executing it. That seems to be the accepted way of creating registry entries on Java if you have to do such a thing.
Here is a link to the type of .reg file you're going to need to associate a file with a certain program, and you'll need to modify it slightly to do a 'java -jar myJar' type of thing. Then, just point Runtime.getRuntime().exec() at it, and you should be good to go.
The only thing I'd be worried about is how to find the JAVA_HOME. If you launched your installer via WebStart (or had the user double-click the jar for the first time), though, you could just use
System.getProperty("java.home");

Since I like to double-click or hit return in the bridge, I am constantly having to wait until the file opens in CS6, quit CS6 an then open it another way to get it into Photoshop CC 2014. File open menu will not open local files using open command but the same files will open if I double click them (permissions seem fine)

Are you sure it hasn't imported?
Check for the track names (trackname only, not Album or Artist)) and see if they have a blank Artist and Album, because WAV files have no MetaData, so are kind of stupid as far as knowing anything about the Artist, Album & track id.
You can't search by 'Untitled' either as there is literally, no name at all, but iTunes does pick up the actual physical track name in Finder and uses that. As an example, if you renamed your Aerosmith WAV file from say 'Toys In The Attic' to 'Love Song' it would import the track as 'Love Song' as that's all it can go by.
There are a few iTunes AppleScripts that let you import from a file of WAV music, by looking at the enclosing Album in the enclosing Artist as that's how most PC progs create the WAV file structure.

By double clicking on a photo opened in event I get the picture of an exclamation mark instead of the big photo. also the slideshow does not work anymore.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions

Double Clicking Photo No Longer Opens in Full Screen

Hi all:
We have our preferences in iPhoto set so that double clicking a particular thumbnail opens the photo in Full Screen mode for editing.
Just this morning, for no apparent reason, we noticed that the photos when double clicked now open with gray (or black, I'll have to look again when I'm back home) space on the sides -- in a sort of "letterbox" effect. The pix still fill the screen from top to bottom like they used to, but they no longer stretch completely to the sides.
Any idea what has happened? We're thinking it's something easy, perhaps a stray click that unintentionally put us in a different iPhoto mode without us knowing it. (We did recheck our preference setting and "open in full screen" remains selected.)

Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist from your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and reset your preferences.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Can't double-click on icons to open Photoshop CS4

When I double-click various Photoshop files (.jpg, .tif, etc...) I get the "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file". But they open fine when I go to File>Open. I've changed the extensions to default open with Photoshop but that didn't help. Any easy solutions? THANKS!

Ahhh… well your issue is not related to Photoshop directly then. I suggest you run disk permissions, on your main hard drive - don't worry its a fairly safe activity.

This will do Permissions repair as well as other important maintenance tasks. Good idea to back up first, but these kind of activities on mac are really 99% safe and recommended.
To reset Photoshops preferences hold down Command > alt > shift while starting Photoshop. Sounds like your issue is not going to be sorted by this though
