Double click won't open folders on desktop

Hi McFriends-Have new MacBook Pro, 2.2 Ghz, 15" screen, latest OS X 10.4.10. Has worked fine for few days. Now when I try to double click to open a folder on desktop it won't open. It will open if I right click and select "open." Also image of hard disk is now on the bottom part of screen on right side below folders when I reboot. Disk utility and Tech Tool Pro say no problems found. Works normal to click once to open applications in the finder. Am I missing something obvious? Puzzled......any suggestions? Thanks!!!

For Mac mice, did you go to SysPrefs and play with the "Mouse Click" settings?
For third party mice, there might be a PrefPane in SysPrefs that will allow you to re-establish your clicking scenario.

  • Double click won't open folders/files/albums

To open files or albums on my macbok pro I have to right click instead of double clicking.
I recently reset my pram settings due to my trackpad not working.

    Hey Supernatural_Impala,
Thanks for the question. When you are attempting to open these files/folders, are you physically clicking? or tapping to click? If it is the latter, let’s check your Trackpad settings in System Preferences to see if “Tap to click” is disabled.

Mail shows in the doc, but when clicked or doubled clicked does not open on the desktop, HELP !

    Try restarting your Mac.
Open Termimal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)Try entering this command: killall Dock, and then hit enter
Try dragging the Mail icon out of the dock, then let it disappear in a puff of smoke. Then from Applications/Mail try dragging the Mail icon back into the dock, and see if it works.
Does Mail open otherwise? Like if you try opening it from your Applications folder?if it doesn't:
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
if that doesn't work: reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.

  • Double click won't open apps, files, etc.

We have one computer with multiple users. When I log in (sys admin) I have no problem. When wife logs in double clicking will not open anything. We have to do it manually. I'm sure a button is turned off but I can't find it. Any help out there?
    Many thanks!

Open up the Keyboard and Mouse system preferences and make sure the double-click speed is not set too fast. If it is too fast, it doesn't register the double-click unless you click very fast.

  • Double click no longer opens folders, but opens desktop

Starting a few days ago when I double click a folder on the desktop it no longer opens.  Instead, I am taken to a new desktop window that shows the folder clicked plus all other items on the desktop.  How do I restore the double click to open the folder?  I have tried resetting the double click speed with no results.  Thanks.

Open Mission Control. Close all desktops except Desktop 1 by positioning the cursor over each one and then clicking the X button in the top left corner.

  • Double-click won't open photo in new window

so double clicking a photo in my library used to open it in a separate window where i could have a closer look or edit the photo, only, now, when i double-click a photo, the separate window opens, flashes the photo for a millisecond and then appears and remains blank. anyone had this issue before? know how to fix it? happy days!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Double clicking won't open files

Since installing new Snow Leopard update I am unable to open icons by double clicking. I have to right click and then choose open. Same problem when trying to open bookmark links in Safari. Thanks

This FAQ relates to Photoshop 7 through CS4, so it may be worth checking wheter it applies to CS5 for this very same issue too:

Double-click/Drag-&-drop Photoshop files opens application but not file…
Note the last part about the missing "Adobe Unit Types" file in the Scripting Additions folder of the root level Library.

    Open your Previous System folder.
    Find "Adobe Unit Types".
Copy it into: <Your current system Hard Drive>/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
    Then reboot your Mac.
However, if you happen to be running a non-English version, like Photoshop CS CE or Photoshop CS ME, it appears the missing file does not get installed. You would need to install and delete the international English version first.
I'm just speculating that this may apply in CS5 too as I don't have this latest version of Photoshop.

  • CS5 - Double clicking won't open files at times.

This randomly happens with both jpegs and RAW files.
Going to File > Open, opens them every time.
Why don't my photo files open every time with double-clicking?  This does not happen with my CS3 and does not happen with any other type of files.

  • Double-click won't open Word document

Weird thing: I received an MS Word document (.doc) as an attachment, and it will not load by clicking or double-clicking on it's icon. I can open it, if I go to Word and issue the "Open..." command. The file's name was a bit odd, so I removed the "#" character in renaming it. Now it opens fine when double-clicked. What gives?

I found several references implying that # is not illegal in Windows. I am not sure why you encountered what you did, but I have encountered others having problems with Windows file names containing no apparent illegal characters. I think I'd just forget about it.

  • Opening photoshop from double click on file opens the app but doesn't open the file.

This is a new behaviour... how can we solve it? Its very annoying!

    Thanks!
    Steps to reproduce:
    Having the photoshop closed...
1 - Double click a psd file on the desktop (or any other place)
2 - Photoshop loads until it gets to the normal window
    3 - The file wasn't opened
4 - Go back to the desktop and double click the file
5 - Photoshop (that is at this time already open), opens the file and displays it on screen
Shouldn't it be opening the file after loading photoshop?

You can associate files from the Bridge level and the Desktop level.
In Bridge CS4, go to Preferences > File Type Associations and change it to Photoshop CS4 for the file types you want.
If you want to open files from the Windows Desktop in CS4, these are the instructions:
Do this from the Windows Desktop:
If you want your image file to open in Photoshop and it doesn't, right click on it and choose
Open with > Choose default program… select Photoshop CS4 or CS6 and checkmark "always use the selected program to open this type of file".

  • Adobe Application Manager Won't Open and CC Desktop failed to install

I am running Win 7 Ultimate. Adobe Application Manager Won't Open and CC Desktop failed to install on my computer after I signed up for Adobe CC tonight. I am currently using the CS5 suite (perpetual license) and do not want to uninstall any of the programs until I am successfully running the Adobe CC versions. The AAM gives me an error message saying that it failed to open when I select it, and the creative cloud installer fails to install. I have tried restarting my computer. Help? This is very frustrating. I am a student and use this software on a daily basis, and can't afford to not have these programs available when I need them.

    Hi,
Try this ... reboot your Mac and see if double clicking works again.
Also, you can just select the Application you like to open and hold down the Command+O to open.
Also, did you check your setting for the mouse in system preferences.

  • Indesign CS4 double click the file opens app. but not file

One of our systems that is running Win XP Pro SP3 with InDesign CS4 loaded and file associations fixed, when an INDD file is double clicked the application opens but the file does not. If we open INDD and go to file open and select the file it opens. Just not when double clicked. If I put the file on another system everything is fine. Anyone seen this before.

I'm pretty much at a loss. You might want to make sure that the open action is programed correctly in Windows.
Open Explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options... and scroll to .indd, then click the advanced button and select the Open action. Click Edit, and make sure that the "Application used to perform action" line includes "%1" (in quotes) after the path to InDesign. I believe the "confirm open after download" box should also be checked in the edit screen.
If that's OK, I'm guessing it has to do with SP3. Doe you have SP3 installed on the machine where it works?
