Double Clicking on a PDF document, will not open

When double clicking on a PDF document with the default document properties set to Acrobat Professional 8, the document will not launch Acrobat.
If Acrobat is already opened however it will launch.
I've tried:
re-setting file associations
deleting preferences
Uninstalling and reloading Acrobat: (solves the issue for a time but after a period of use it reverts to this broken state).
OS X 10.5.5 is fully updated, as is Acrobat 8.

Another Utility that will do the same without aid of DVD.
is a Utility called
AppleJack version 1.5 works with OSX.5.x and version 1.4.3 work with all previous systems.
download install the go into Single User mode (restart Command-S) wait for screen to come up will be in B&W as soon as it starts up release until you see a Blinking Block Cursor. type applejack as instructed on screen. follow the commands as shown in Order.
I amazing what problems it can clear up. Font Caches are removed and others. If you follow all the way to the end. Its amazing how much your machine will speed up up not having to wade through obsolete Cruft. Note if you do everything to the end. will take you computer a few minutes to rebuild caches, and other items.

  • PDF documents will not open in Adobe Acrobat 5

I have one computer with XP running Acrobat 5. I now have a second computer running Windows 7 with Acrobat 9 Pro.  When I take PDF documents from the computer with Acrobat 9 Pro to the one with Acrobat 5, the PDF docs will not open - an error message states the file is corrupted.  Why is this hapening and how can it be fixed?
Thanks for any assistance - confused.

#1 - The files were moved using a thumb/USB drive and "Safely Remove" was used.
#2 - You may be on to something here for some: Some were created by AA9 but some others were scanned in and some were from AA8 that I had no trouble before.
#3 - The only "special feature" is that the PDF files are searchable and some are a PDF of an image.
    These are basic PDF files.
    Thanks for your assistance

  • Adobe/Acrobat PDF documents will not open, tried community suggestions, version 9.4.4.235

Assorted websites may refer to links for documents to open, but I receive an error message stating that the Adobe/Acrobat loaded will not open them, I have tried all of the community suggestions to no avail

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and disable the following.<br><br>
    #Fun Web Products<br><br>
    #My Web Search Plugin<br><br>
    #Smiley Central<br><br>
For the above three, see: http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml
In addition, disable the Yahoo ActiveX plugin.
ActiveX is a Microsoft technology which is frequently targeted by criminals. Although the technology is reasonably safe when running inside Internet Explorer, it potentially exposes your system to attack when installed in Firefox.
You do not need it to access Yahoo in any event.
If the problem persists in spite of the above steps, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.
'''N.B.''' You do not need to run "Hijack This" as described in the link since Firefox provides the option to disable plugins as mentioned above.

  • Secure PDF Document will not open

I am trying to open a billing statement from my university.  It opens in Adobe Reader as a PDF; however, instead of showing my bill, there is a message that reads: "If this message is not eventually replaced by your statement, then your PDF reader may not be able to display this document."  This is followed by links to this website to update the reader.  However, I already have the latest Adobe Reader XI (11.0.03), but the correct document never loads.  What is going on here??

You are trying to open it in FireFox or Chrome, is my guess. They don't use Adobe Reader.
Save the file to your desktop, open it from there.

  • Suddenly double-clicking on a PDF document opens the Acrobat application but the document does not load.

Up until today I had no problem opening a PDF document that I have already saved by double-clicking on it.  Now when I do that, my Acrobat application opens, but the PDF document does not.  I need to use File/ Open to select the document I want to see, or I need to right mouse click on the PDF document and choose “Open with”.  I had this once before and I had help to resolve this, but I am using Acrobat 7 Professional and since it is not supported, I can’t get help when I call Support.

Sounds like a Windows problem. Try the right click and then select the ALWAYS open with feature. That is supposed to fix the link. If that does not work, open the file type menu under the TOOLS>Folder Options (XP view, may be other in VISTA). If you select advanced under PDF, you should get a link under the open>edit something like "c:\adobeapp\acrobat 5.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe" "%1". The comment you make sounds like the %1 or the quotes are missing. Bill

  • Using office outlook under parallel desktop double click on an Excel attachement does not open the document in Excel

using office outlook under parallel desktop double click on an Excel attachement does not open the document in Excel.
double-click opens Excel Office 2011 for mac without the document.
It should open the document in Excel 2010 for Windows.

In Parralells, choose the file you want to open.
Right Click on it and choose Properties.
In the General Tab you will see "Opens with:"
Click the "Change ... " button.
Then choose Excel 2010. The checkbox below should be set to "Always use ... "

  • Bookmarked PDF's will not open in browser window

I just got the latest FF 3.6.6 and installed Nitro from Adobe so that I could open PDF's in the browser. Before upgrading, I could bookmark a PDF and it would still open it in the window. Now it wants to save it. How do I fix this? I bookmark a lot of PDF's because I don't want to save them on my computer, and I use them over and over for my writing.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I upgraded to 3.6 and got Nitro add on

    1. Nitro is NOT an Adobe product.
    2. It is an alternative to Adobe Acrobat.
3.It currently does not have the ability to display in a browser tab; see 3rd item below.
    <u>Company's web site</u>: http://www.nitroreader.com/
<u>User forum</u> (click "Help" at the top of the Company's web site): http://community.nitropdf.com/nitropdf?from_gsfn=true
    <u>User forum thread; no in-browser display</u>: http://community.nitropdf.com/nitropdf/topics/launching_pdfs_in_the_browser_window
You should be able to open PDF files from the internet directly in a separate Nitro window (not a tab in Firefox) if you change your settings on the Application panel (Tools > Options > Applications for "...PDF Document" content type(s). Read the following 2 articles carefully:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+file+types
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions
<u>The PDF file will NOT open within Firefox because no browser plugin is provided by the company, but instead</u> will open the Nitro program in a separate window and display the PDF there.
Somewhat general instructions; I do not have Nitro, so I am guessing at some names and locations on your hard drive and what you will see on the Applications panel. In the Applications panel, use the pull down arrow (see step 4 in the above article, Managing File Types), click "Use Other".
-If Nitro <u>IS on the pop-up list</u>, click on Nitro, click OK.
-If Nitro is NOT on the pop-up list, click Browse, go to your installation folder for Nitro (probably on C: drive in your Programs folder), open the Nitro folder, double-click on the executable that will open the Nitro program; nitro.exe/nitroreader.exe (whatever the file is named; you might want to find and open the Nitro program before you begin the process to know the exact executable file name to double-click).

  • Embedded pdf files will not open

Dell Laptop Windows XP up to date, Firefox 4.0, Adobe Reader 10.0.1
Since updating to Firefox 4.0 certain embedded pdf files will not open forcing me to use my Internet Explorer browser to access these files. Tried all of the FAQ suggestions with no relief.
NOTE: I can open previously opened files (Firefox 3.___) but not a new one.

Thank you for the response. I insereted several .pdf files into my MS Word document where they show as Acobat icons. When in MS Word, I am able to double-click on the icons and the files open in Acrobat. I then converted the MS Word document to a .pdf. These icons now only show as pictures and do not open the original inserted .pdf documents.

  • Pdf files will not open

    Hi,
I have viewed through this forum and did not find a problem with similar symptoms.
I upgraded from Adobe Reader 8 to Reader 9 and then the .pdf files will not open.
    Actions and Observations/Symptoms:
    1)  After I clicked onto the pdf document icon - nothing happens.
    2)  I right click onto the pdf icon and chose "open with Adobe 9" and get the same response.  Nothing happens.
    3)  I go to the the start menu - select Adobe Reader 9 - and the program does not even open.
    =======
I have since removed Reader 9 and re-installed Reader 8.  I tried the above actions and got the same behaviour.  Not a whole lot happens.  It seems like something is broken after the first initial upgrade.
In fact - I went to the folder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader  and
tried to open Reader by double clicking onto "AcroRd32.exe" and there was no response.
I'm completely lost!  Can anyone share a fix to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Mike
Some hardware & OS background info:  Toshiba Laptop - 1.58 Ghz, 3GB RAM - M/S Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3

I can't explain the cause to the problem - but I found two "work-arounds" to get me running again.
    Workaround #1:
I found another program (and there are many) on the web that will also read .pdf files.  I downloaded  "Foxit Reader" , installed it and it works.  I can now view my pdf docs!
However - I got so used to Adobe Reader - I really wanted to get Reader working again.
    Workaround #2:
    I re-installed Adobe Reader 8.
Instead of running the usual Adobe installation script that I got from the web, I copied (from another PC's C-drive)  the "Reader 8.0" folder and all its contents into my current C- drive directory structure  C:\Program Files\Adobe\.
I re-booted the PC and can now open my pdf files using Reader 8.
It seems to work - but I don't know what the effects of this installation method will have in the future - or the interaction it will have with other programs.  I guess when I need to remove the program in the future  - I'll have to do it manually, since it doesn't even register in the "Add or Remove Programs" under Control Panel.
    ===============
Hope this helps out anyone else with similar symptoms.
In the original problem, it's unfortunate that there were no error messages whatsoever when I tried opening the pdf files.  It was like as if Reader was not even activated or even loaded on my PC.  I'll bug me for a while - but at least I got Reader working again (for now....)!

  • Pdf links will not open in new browser window

I have created a pdf document in Acrobat 9 Pro that is password protected. You must enter the password to open it. In this document there are perhaps 15 links to other pdf documents. I set up each of the links to open in a new window. The links work as expected in Acrobat, each opening in a new window, however, when I posted the documents to the web, the links open in the same window as the original document. This would not be a big issue if the original document were not password protected, but each time the user clicks on a link, it takes him out of the original document. To get back to the original document requires re-entering the password. This is a major irritation with so many links.
I know that you can set Acrobat to display the documents in its own window rather than in the browser, but my users don't know that. Control clicking on a pdf link does not open it in a new window as it would with an HTML link. Is there a simple fix to this problem that does not involve user intervention?

Well, I came up with a solution, thanks to Ted Padova who offers a simple JavaScript solution on his blog at http://www.acrobatusers.com/blogs/tedpadova/opening-pdfs-new-browser-windows.
The solution is clearly laid out even for beginners, if you know how to create a link or button.
It seems to me that a prime objective of Adobe in developing Acrobat would be to have it behave the same way in free-standing mode and as a plug-in. In this case it does not, and obviously, it has not for the last forty-eleven years that Acrobat has been on the market. Maybe some day they will get around to a fix for this obvious problem. In the meantime, read Ted's blog and be happy we have guys like him who can solve these problems.

then click, and hold, on the icon for "Numbers", once the icons start to shake, click the "X" in the top left to remove.  Now click anywhere on the desktop to exit this remove/adjust mode.

My pages documents will not open and I am not happy at all?

    Hi italiancooking,
This may help. In Finder, right click (or control click) on the document icon and Open With > Preview. If this works, copy the content and paste it into a new blank Pages document.

  • I installed Mavericks Wednesday.  Afterward updates were offered for my iWork '09 Apps.  I installed them, opened a document, and was asked when I closed it if I'd like to update the file to a near format.  I chose "Yes".  That document will not open now

It says that a new version of Pages is required.  The update in The App Store shows that it is version 5.2 AND that it is installed.  Pages claims to be 4.3.  What now?  Thanks.

Pages v5 and IOS Pages v2.1 introduced a completely incompatible document format that Pages ’09 v4.3 cannot open. That document extension remains .pages for added confusion. Due to Pages v5 missing about 100+ features/functionality that were in v4.3, you may find that the file conversion to v5.2 may have filtered content from your older document format.
In Pages v5.2, use File > Export to Pages ’09 and see what remains.
In the future, with both applications installed on your Mac, a double-click of any Pages document will attempt to open it with Pages v5.2. If you want to open a Pages ’09 v4.3 document, you will need to open it directly from the relevant Open dialog, or by right-clicking on the document, and using the Open With > Pages (4.3) menu item. You have already seen the dialog when you attempt to open a Pages v5 document with the older Pages.
Here in the Pages for Mac community, we are recommending that users strictly continue to use Pages ’09 v4.3 until a time in the future where Apple has reconstructed Pages v5 or v6 into an acceptible WP application.
